Germany’s emtec Electronic GmbH will present its product line of automatic digital solutions for the pulp, paper, tissue and board industry at the Technical Association of the Paper Industry (ATIP) at La Grande Crypte in Paris, France on December 8-9.

Leipzig, Germany, 19.10.2022 – Given a global pandemic, an energy crisis, and rising environmental concerns, the push to digitalize the pulp and paper industry has never been stronger. Market trends show that demand for tissue products and paper packaging, especially, continues to increase globally. However, rising costs of raw materials and energy are leading many companies to turn to digital solutions to optimize operations.

The automatization and digitalization of the paper industry go hand in hand — both lead to quicker, more efficient, and less costly processing conditions. To support manufacturers in this pursuit, emtec Electronic will showcase its specialized measuring and testing devices for the pulp, paper, tissue and board industry at the ATIP convention in Paris.

These include the ACA Ash Content Analyzer, a portable lab device that delivers a percentage breakdown of individual mineral filler components as well as the total mineral filler content non-destructively (without combustion) and within seconds. The new measuring principle allows for a quick determination of industry-typical fillers such as calcium carbonate, clay, talcum, titanium dioxide, barium sulfate and iron oxide.

Also in focus at the exhibit, but not onsite due to its large size: The FPO Fiber Potential Analyzer Online. An innovative measuring device based on the proven measuring principle of known laboratory instruments. Once installed in the process, it determines the zeta potential of fibers in the wet end fully automatically, precisely and continuously. Using two possible, independent sampling points, it then transfers the results directly to the process control system or any web server. This enables an immediate intervention to the production process, if necessary, as well as remote access to the data from anywhere in the world. The FPO is capable of sampling different paper types (e. g. tissue, decor paper), is easy to trouble-shoot, and requires little maintenance.

Other devices on display will be the EST12 Surface & Sizing Tester, the TSA Tissue Softness Analyzer, and emtec’s “yellow twins” — the CAS touch! Charge Analyzing System and the FPA touch! Fiber Potential Analyzer, two portable lab devices best used in tandem.

The application of the emtec measuring systems leads to enormous savings in material, personnel, time and energy, and supports the shift to industry 4.0.

Visitors to the ATIP can stop by the emtec booth number 29 and speak with sales reps Philipp Sievers (emtec) and Thierry Onder de Linden (ODL Paper) for more information.

The 54th annual Pulp and Paper International Congress and Exhibition in São Paulo, Brazil from October 4-6, 2022 will focus on technological trends, governance and innovation in the context of promoting greater sustainability. emtec Electronic GmbH will present a selection of its paper measuring and testing devices that help reduce resource waste and optimize quality.

Leipzig, Germany, 04.09.2022 – Regarded as Latin America’s biggest event in the forest-based industry production chain, the ABTCP congress is expected to attract thousands of pulp and paper industry executives and professionals to the Transamerican Expo Center in São Paulo to discuss new trends and exchange ideas. This year, the main theme of the event is “Pulp and Paper: Environment, Society, Governance and Innovation.”

2022 09 05 101251The German device manufacturer emtec Electronic GmbH will be on-site to present a line of products that not only help paper professionals optimize product and process quality, but also help meet sustainability goals such as waste reduction. The 27-year-old company specializes in the manufacture of measuring and testing equipment for pulp, paper, and board and serves customers in more than 80 countries around the world.

“Given the current world economic situation — with rising energy costs, climate concerns and a growing focus on social responsibility — it makes sense that pulp and paper specialists are increasingly looking for ways to conserve resources and reduce waste, without sacrificing quality,” says Alexander Gruener, Global Marketing and Business Development Manager at emtec. "Our equipment helps with this by quickly and reliably providing measurement data that leads to a more efficient use of resources and greater control throughout the production and conversion process."

The palette from emtec Electronic at the exhibit includes the digital-twin machines for measuring the charge environment of the pulp: the CAS touch! Charge Analyzing System and the FPA touch! Fiber Potential Analyzer. This dynamic duo is best used in tandem for overall controlling and optimization of the wet end in the papermaking process. Whereas the CAS touch! evaluates the particle charge in the pulp suspension, the FPA touch! measures the zeta potential of the fibers.

Precise monitoring of these two areas is key to ensuring a resource-efficient production process. The CAS lets technicians know the cationic demand in the filtrate of a suspension for a correct dosing of anionic trash catcher (ATC). The FPA then provides information about the fiber surface charge for the determination of the optimal interaction between the fibers and functional chemical additives such as starch, wet or dry strength agents, optical brighteners, etc.

Other instruments on display at the Expo will be the ACA Ash Content Analyzer, which quickly and non-destructively measures the total mineral filler content as well as the percentage distribution of the individual fillers in paper and board; the DFA Dynamic Filtration Analyzer, which quickly determines the influence of chemicals on the filtration characteristics of fiber suspensions by an automatic analysis of drainage and retention; and the TSA Tissue Softness Analyzer, which objectively measures the softness, smoothness, and in-plane stiffness of tissue and paper products.

Participants and visitors are encouraged to stop by booth 89/90 in Aisle D5/6 to speak to emtec’s Area Sales Manager Daniel Ohndorf and the team of representative company Elof Hansson to find out more about ways to conserve resources using emtec Electronic testing instruments.

How can manufacturers significantly improve product quality and process runnability in paper production and converting? This is exactly the question German manufacturer of specialized testing technology, emtec Electronic, addresses at booth 163 at the MIAC 2021 convention in Lucca, Italy from October 13-15.

Leipzig, Germany, 13.09.2021 – After MIAC 2020 was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, technicians of paper mills and converting sites worldwide once again get the opportunity to update their professional knowledge and experience the charm of Tuscany for three days at the MIAC Exhibition in Lucca, Italy. This year, 250 international exhibitors will present new technologies, machinery, and cutting-edge technical solutions for paper and board production and converting to visitors on-site at the Lucca Exhibition Centre.

Visitors to the convention can visit emtec Electronic at Booth 163 to discover more about emtec’s devices, all of which are self-developed and unique on the market. The assortment includes the device that launched the company, the PDA Penetration Dynamics Analyzer, which measures liquid penetration to predict the gluing, printing, and coating behavior of paper and board.

One of emtec’s most recent devices, the ACA Ash Content Analyzer, will be on display at the event. The ACA allows for a quick and reliable determination of the composition of fillers and fines within a sample without destroying the sample. This process leads to an immense time-saving compared to traditional combustion methods.

2021 09 13 205645

In addition, the CAS touch! and FPA touch! will be on location and available for demonstrations. The latter two are improved and more easily portable versions of the original one-of-a-kind testing technology, the Charge Analyzing System and Fiber Potential Analyzer.

Using standard titration techniques, the CAS touch! technology allows technicians to measure the cationic/anionic and acid/base demands of water-based charge systems, easily determine isoelectric and flocculation points of a sample and examine the correlation between pH, titrant demand and streaming potential. The FPA touch! enables the correct dosage of chemically charged additives by providing accurate information regarding the charge of fibers and fillers in a sample based on proven methods of Zeta Potential measurement.

One emtec device not on display due to its size but with video and informational material readily available is the FPO, the Fiber Potential Analyzer Online, which has the added benefit of being connected directly to the process and is so able to constantly monitor the fiber charge, allowing for immediate changes to be made if necessary.

“We’re excited to participate in the MIAC event again this year after last year’s hiatus, and are looking forward to lively discussions and demonstrations with visitors, as well as meeting up with our Italian representatives once more,” says Alexander Gruener, Global Marketing and Business Development Manager for emtec.

Measuring device manufacturer emtec Electronic is pleased to announce that its TSA Tissue Softness Analyzer is the subject of a recently released TAPPI Technical Information Paper (TIP). The peer-reviewed technical specification document investigates the specialized measuring instrument for tissue paper that is able to simulate the sensory properties of the human hand when touching tissue paper products.

Can a machine accurately imitate the sensory capabilities of the human hand? Is it possible to objectively and reliably determine complex tactile sensations such as the softness, smoothness, or stiffness of tissue products? What conditions are necessary to determine a product’s hand-feel?

2021 08 06 093150A newly released TIP from industry research organization TAPPI endeavors to answer these questions in connection with emtec Electronic’s TSA Tissue Softness Analyzer device. TAPPI TIPs, or Technical Information Papers, are documents containing specific information, such as data, calculations, or product applications, for use in the manufacture, evaluation and description of pulp, paper, and related products. TAPPI TIP 0808-07, titled “Objective Determination of the Haptic Properties of Tissue Products, Technical Information Paper TIP 0808-07 (2021)” covers the theoretical background of haptics, how the TSA device measures the three basic parameters for determining haptic feel, and discusses application possibilities for the paper manufacturing process and quality assurance.

TIPs are critically peer-reviewed and contain practical and readily usable information for the pulp, tissue, and paper industries, among others. Because of the organization’s well-known research and testing standards, being featured in a TAPPI technical paper is widely considered an important recognition within the industry and marks a milestone for the 25-year-old German machine developing and manufacturing company.

“Since we came out with the TSA in 2006, it’s been our goal to make it a relevant, cost-saving measuring device known throughout the industry,” says emtec founder Giselher Gruener. “Being recognized and published in a TAPPI technical document is an important step in this direction.”

The Tissue Softness Analyzer provides accurate and consistent results relating to the haptic parameters that determine the human tactile sensation, such as the sensation of softness, of tissue products. The TAPPI TIP includes a methodical investigation of the device’s measuring principles, an exploration of the algorithms used to arrive at a hand-feel, and the required conditions for measuring the haptic parameters, which determine hand-feel of base tissue and finished products, such as facial tissues, napkins, or toilet paper.

Emtec’s unique invention, the TSA Tissue Softness Analyzer, provides a simple, quick, and reliable way to get objective measurements of the haptic properties of tissue paper.  In this year’s Tissue Conference, hosted by Tissue Analytica in collaboration with NC State University and TAPPI, emtec gives a virtual presentation on the TSA’s measuring concept, possible applications, and customer success stories.

The Covid-19 pandemic has not only affected production, supply chains, sales, and consumer habits across industries, but also the way industry professionals gather and communicate. The tissue paper industry is no exception. That is why the 2021 Tissue Conference focuses on “Sustainability, Performance, Risks & Opportunities in Times of Pandemic” in an online event from January 12-14, starting at 9 a.m. EST. The German company emtec Electronic GmbH, one of the leading producers of special electronic measuring devices for paper, board, textiles and nonwovens, will also participate in the event and share how the use of its TSA measuring device saves time and resources.

2017 03 30 092245“Especially in times of increased demand and production, such as we’ve seen during the Covid-19 pandemic, tissue paper manufacturers want to ensure the best possible quality while minimizing the waste of time and resources,” says emtec’s Global Marketing and Business Manager Alexander Gruener. “Under such conditions, sometimes even a small improvement to the process or product can yield big results.”

In a presentation on day two of the three-day conference, Gruener explains how to use the TSA device, which is able to measure haptic properties of tissues such as softness, smoothness/structure, stiffness, compressibility and “crumple-ability”. Gruener also illustrates how the unique design of the TSA device imitates the sensory perception of the human hand. The TSA, however, is able to differentiate between three different parameters and arrive at a numeric value for a sample’s hand-feel based on softness, smoothness, and stiffness. In addition, Gruener describes current applications for use in production, including R&D, process and product optimization, quality assurance, troubleshooting, and benchmarking. One example includes a newly developed TSA test method for the evaluation of hand sheets, which was developed by industry research partners at the Munich University of Applied Sciences and featured in a study in the online journal Bioresources
