SupremeFilm is characterized by an extremely homogeneous and constant film transfer. Beyond that, it retains its surface roughness over its entire service life thanks to Voith's innovative filler material concept. This ensures ideal application for paper grades with high quality specifications. Moreover, the PU material is highly abrasion-resistant, which results in longer grinding intervals and consistent profile 2-sigma values.

Sappi’s Ehingen paper mill was one of the first customers to successfully use the new SupremeFilm roll cover in the film press. “We aim to be constantly evolving and continually making our production more efficient. To enable this, new technologies were necessary. This was also the reason why we opted to use a promising new development with Voith,” says Dietmar Muser, Manager Paper Mill, Sappi Ehingen GmbH. “And this paid off, as the already very good results got even better. SupremeFilm allowed us to keep the 2-sigma profiles constant over an unprecedented installation period. This means that we achieved our main goal of producing perfect paper quality. In addition, we benefited from reduced maintenance costs and a longer run time between roll changes.”

The ongoing development of its products is just as much an integral part of the corporate philosophy of paper and board manufacturer Papier- und Kartonfabrik Varel (PKV) as the constant improvement of production efficiency. To achieve these goals the company, which was established in 1938, has been working with Voith for many years. For its current rebuild of the PM 4, PKV is also relying on the expertise of the technology group from Heidenheim.

  • IIoT OnCumulus platform the basis for fast, reliable and secure access to all machine and production data.
  • OnEfficiency.Dewatering module and Tandem NipcoFlex press increase dry content by 1 percent
  • 15 percent increase in total output planned

On the PM 4, PKV produces packaging papers with a wide range of basis weights from 120 to 280 grams per square meter. Previously, the web width on the pope roller was 5,250 mm. As part of the rebuild, the width will be increased to 5,450 mm. The new width necessitates various adjustments to upstream components. Voith team will increase the widths of the first dryer group, the existing headboxes, the wire and press sections and the Fourdrinier wire.

The key items on PKV’s agenda were increasing the total output by 15 percent, improving runability and reducing specific energy costs. In addition, optimizing the dewatering capacity is intended to raise the dry content downstream of the Tandem NipcoFlex press by at least one percent.

IIoT platform OnCumulus: pivotal to digitalization
An essential prerequisite to achieving the desired effects was the integration of the latest Papermaking 4.0 technologies. In this context, the OnCumulus platform is absolute crucial, as it enables fast, reliable and secure access to data from local machines and systems in the cloud and makes them available for efficient use. Other modules from the Voith OnCare product range like OnEfficiency.Strength or OnEfficiency.Dewatering are used to monitor paper production at PKV. All modules and components are networked with one another. The PKV team also has transparent access to all relevant data at any time.

Fewer strength fluctuations
OnEfficiency.Strength uses statistical models and virtual sensors to reduce strength fluctuations in machine direction. As a result fiber use and starch use are optimized. Continuous measurements and automatic adjustments to parameters ensure fewer fluctuations, which in turn minimizes broke, reduces deviations in production output and improves paper quality during grade changes.

Stable dry content
By means of systematic regulation of the former vacuum the OnEfficiency.Dewatering module stabilizes the dry content upstream of the press. This helps to save energy, while the Papermaking 4.0 technology ensures consistently high ply bond strength. To ensure the requested one percent improvement in dry content, Voith installed a Tandem NipcoFlex system designed in this case for web widths of up to 5,700 mm. Its innovative design allows optimum dewatering for the entire basis weight range of the PM 4. As a result, PKV can further improve the strength and surface quality of its corrugated baseboard made from secondary and virgin fibers. A closed web run in combination with separation suction boxes allows production speeds of up to 1,200 m/minute and is therefore the main basis for the substantial increase in production capacity requested by customer.

Initial clothing of PM 4 by Voith
To achieve the required dry contents, it is important that the clothing is perfectly matched over the entire paper machine. From the outset, the PM 4 will be fitted with I-Series forming wires, Infinity press felts and MultiTech dryer fabrics.

More uniform CD profile
In addition, the existing ModuleJet II headbox system in the backliner headbox will be extended by adding an OnQ Profilmatic CD profile control. OnQ Profilmatic can determine the proportion of random noise in the measurements. Its continuous dynamic profile mapping allows exact local assignment of the actuator control zones to the measured values. This results in more uniform CD profiles and therefore improved paper quality. On the Fourdrinier wire, the extensively proven HiVac high vacuum suction box will replace the previously used couch roll. The vacuum system helps reduce the paper machine’s energy consumption and increases the dry content of the paper web.

Saving resources in the white top and achieving optimum paper edge
EdgeExpert returns the white paper fibers to the appropriate system, ensuring that these fibers are preserved for use in the white top. EdgeDeckle S is the latest tool for controlling the edge in the wire section. It ensures a good paper edge with optimum profile quality.

Efficient cleaning systems for greater runability
The installation of cutting-edge cleaning systems like CleanLine Excell or ProLub improves runability and increases the total output of the PM 4. The permeability of the Voith clothing is maintained for longer, which results in a more homogeneous paper web. In addition, CleanLine Excell needs much less water than high-pressure showers and cleans so effectively that the use of chemical cleaners is much reduced or dispensed with altogether.

Safer reel change
The EcoChange W reel changing system, which works with traversing high-pressure water jet nozzles, is another component which has enabled Voith to achieve PKV’s specified goals like an increase in total output and improvement in the runability of the PM 4. The system enables efficient changing of the paper rolls and will be integrated as part of the adjustment of the Pope roller’s web width, resulting in minimal broke during reel changes.

In addition, Voith’s scope of supply also includes upgrading the air systems, adapting the dryer hood and drive technology, and automating the paper machine. In this context, the Voith team was also able to contribute its expertise in detail engineering and is supporting PKV with the approval of the plant in accordance with the German Federal Immission Control Act.

By changing from classic rubber covers to CeraGuide B ceramic roller coatings from Voith, Schoellershammer was able to significantly increase the efficiency of its PM 5. The new coatings not only reduced the regrinding frequency but also increased the service life of the wire, as well as reducing energy consumption on the drives.

• CeraGuide B ceramic roller coating surface prevents shape wear and deposits
• Longer grinding intervals improve paper machine productivity
• Results in 20 percent longer service life of the wire in the forming section

Until early 2016, Schoellershammer used rubber covers on PM 5 for drive, breast and guide rollers in the wire section. Due to the production conditions of the machine and the drive concept, the covers were subject to high edge wear. This deterioration had a direct effect on the service life of the wire. The worn edges of the rubber covers caused speed differences between the middle of the wire and its edges. This led to increased tension in the cross direction of the machine. In addition, there was edge rusting that frequently occurs with rubber covers. Over the course of time, they cause the covers to rise at the edges. To prevent damage to the paper machine, Schoellershammer had to stop production every five to seven months, remove the roll covers and regrind them.

2019 06 03 092758

These downtimes significantly reduced the efficiency of the production line on which Schoellershammer produces half of its annual paper production, equating to around 500,000 tons of corrugated board.

Armin Vetter, Managing Director of Schoellershammer, therefore decided to replace the rubber covers with CeraGuide B ceramic coating from Voith at the beginning of 2016. CeraGuide B has been specially developed for the working conditions of drive and guide rollers in the wire section and has a dirt-repellent and abrasion-resistant surface. This prevents deposits while extending the grinding intervals.

In addition, the use of CeraGuide B reduces energy consumption. Shortly after installing the first drive roller in the lower wire position, the consumption of drive energy was reduced by five percent. In contrast, the service life of the wire increased significantly: After five months in operation, the service life of the wire increased by about 20 percent. In addition, the consistently homogeneous roll surfaces resulted in a better and more stable web profile.

Due to the positive experience, the Duerener paper manufacturer has now equipped all wire section rolls of PM 5 with CeraGuide B ceramic coatings. The company has also decided to apply Voith's innovation to PM 6, which produces about 250,000 tons of corrugated board per year.

About Schoellershammer
The Schoellershammer paper mill is part of Schoellershammer GmbH & Co. KG. It has existed since 1784 and today the company produces per year around 500,000 tons of corrugated base paper on two paper machines. The company employs 245 people and has an annual turnover of around 200 million euros.

At its New Year Reception in Vienna on January 24, 2019, Austrian Standards presented five companies, including the Voith Group, with the Living Standards Award for the development and use of innovative and practical quality standards. Through the development of a new quality standard, Voith and Truetzschler have managed to combine the expertise of the nonwoven and paper industries and in doing so have produced a customized international safety standard for wet-laid nonwoven machines that can be applied in both sectors.

Experts from Voith worked with Truetzschler Nonwovens to elaborate the content of the Voith standard VN 3260 and then develop it further to produce DIN EN ISO 22291 - safety requirements for wet-laid nonwoven machines.

The award winners from Voith and Truetzschler from left to right: Herbert Haydn, Quality Order Manager Voith Paper Rolls GmbH & Co KG, Manfred Gloser, Senior Vice President Quality J.M. Voith SE & Co. KG, Egon Krätschmer CFO Voith GmbH & Co. KGaA, Christian Knörzer Truetzschler Nonwovens & Man-Made Fibers GmbH and Thomas Kastler, Group Standardization J.M. Voith SE & Co. KG.The award winners from Voith and Truetzschler from left to right: Herbert Haydn, Quality Order Manager Voith Paper Rolls GmbH & Co KG, Manfred Gloser, Senior Vice President Quality J.M. Voith SE & Co. KG, Egon Krätschmer CFO Voith GmbH & Co. KGaA, Christian Knörzer Truetzschler Nonwovens & Man-Made Fibers GmbH and Thomas Kastler, Group Standardization J.M. Voith SE & Co. KG.

The newly developed ISO 22291 now enables manufacturers to design and implement standardized safety equipment. This reduces the amount of engineering work involved, leads to a lower accident risk, boosts a company’s competitive position and thus helps it tap into new markets. In the course of the introduction of the new standard, Voith chaired the Technical Committee ISO/TC 72/SC 8/WG 3 in the segment textile machines.

As a hybrid machine, the webforming machine can be used in both the textile and the paper industries. As different safety requirements apply in these two sectors, it was necessary to produce a customized international safety standard. This was particularly necessary because customers had very different expectations. This standard now defines, in a readily comprehensible way, the requirements that these machines have to meet to ensure safe operation.

Voith and Truetzschler jointly developed the manufacturing process for wet-laid and hydroentangled nonwovens. The production lines on which these materials are produced consist partly of paper machine components and partly of components from nonwoven machines. The manufacturing process for wet-laid nonwovens is similar to that for producing paper.

For more than 30 years, Voith has been supplying highly efficient and durable screen baskets for various screening applications in the stock preparation unit – with the aim of continuously improving screening efficiency. With SmartBasket, Voith is now offering an intelligent screen basket add-on tailored to customer requirements that is unique in the market. Thanks to the integrated RFID chip, customers have all the important information related to inventory, location and lifecycle status of their screen baskets at all times.

Given the large number of screen baskets used in the stock preparation unit and that are regularly exchanged, re-chromed or stored in the warehouse, it is a challenge for paper manufacturers to maintain an overview of their inventories in one or several paper mills. Manual documentation of the screen baskets in use and in stock, which has been the usual practice until now, is time-consuming, susceptible to error and results in high costs for inventory management. With SmartBasket, Voith is now offering an efficient, user-friendly solution for asset and lifecycle management of screen baskets, providing paper producers with maximum transparency and availability across all their manufacturing facilities.

Using a hand scanner, the RFID chip integrated into the screen basket is scanned and the data transferred to the mobile SmartBasket app via Bluetooth.Using a hand scanner, the RFID chip integrated into the screen basket is scanned and the data transferred to the mobile SmartBasket app via Bluetooth.

SmartBasket: Tracking with RFID chip
The new Voith screen baskets are equipped with an RFID chip. The baskets are scanned with a special hand scanner that is connected via Bluetooth to a smartphone or tablet and the associated SmartBasket app. This allows all relevant information – like the storage location, running time and condition of every single basket – to be added to a database. The data can be easily viewed in the user-friendly mobile app or in more detailed form via a cockpit solution, a web-based application with more extensive functions including Excel export.

Integrated lifecycle tracking and re-ordering
SmartBasket therefore provides an overview of the entire supply chain and paper manufacturers can optimize their inventory, as the lifecycle status can be tracked at all times. Another advantage of SmartBasket and the app for the customer is the direct connection to the Voith Paper Webshop. Just one click is all it takes to buy screen baskets online from the Webshop.

For intelligent paper manufacturing of the future
“The smart technology not only creates transparency at all levels; it also allows inventories and costs to be reduced,” says Christian Gommeringer, Strategic Global Product Manager at Voith. “The product reflects our forward-looking vision of making paper manufacture even more efficient using smart solutions. In this context, SmartBasket is the next important step toward Papermaking 4.0.” Voith will be adding other smart products to its range in future.

The SmartBasket app is available for mobile devices or as a web-based version with extended functionality. The SmartBasket app is available for mobile devices or as a web-based version with extended functionality.

New this year, Voith offers attendees a unique view of key products through holographic technology to highlight innovations that:

  • Enhance paper operations and maintenance
With CleanLine traversing cleaning systems, visitors can see a cost-effective solution to reduce the effects of contamination.
  • Increase capacity
The new SmoothRun hydropneumatic damping bearing system for winders effectively reduces vibrations occurring during the winding process and allows for higher operating speeds and better winding results. This compact winder upgrade can increase capacity up to 15 percent.
  • Improve paper quality
The DuoShake, an advancement of conventional breast roll shaking technology, emits frequencies that were previously unattainable, allowing it to create a more homogenous distribution of fibers while reinforcing the orientation of the fibers in cross direction.

Beyond the holographic displays, PaperCon attendees can explore other solutions, including:

Data analytics/applications, cloud solutions, and real time adaptive training
Voith‘s OnCumulus lloT cloud platform optimizes efficiency, maintenance and performance using advanced analytics and data harmonization enterprise-wide for one central, secure approach to digitalization. DRIVE is Voith’s real time adaptive 4.0 training ecosystem for 4.0 digitalization dexterity enterprise-wide.

Enhanced safety and efficiency
In addition, the ProTect, which is designed to increase safety, and the SmartBasket, which is designed to increase efficiency, will be available at the booth for a hands-on experience:

  • Regular measurements are essential for efficient operation and the ProTect system offers a safe alternative to manual measurements. The ProTect is a cost-efficient system that makes the press felt measuring process – normally a high-risk task that is usually done manually while the paper machine is running – safer while also delivering more reliable results.
  • For easy identification, lifecycle tracking and asset management, the SmartBasket is an advanced screen basket equipped with RFID technology. Customers can simply scan the RFID technology, add relevant information (such as run time, condition or inventory location) on a smartphone or tablet, and then easily send updates to a dedicated database.
