At its New Year Reception in Vienna on January 24, 2019, Austrian Standards presented five companies, including the Voith Group, with the Living Standards Award for the development and use of innovative and practical quality standards. Through the development of a new quality standard, Voith and Truetzschler have managed to combine the expertise of the nonwoven and paper industries and in doing so have produced a customized international safety standard for wet-laid nonwoven machines that can be applied in both sectors.

Experts from Voith worked with Truetzschler Nonwovens to elaborate the content of the Voith standard VN 3260 and then develop it further to produce DIN EN ISO 22291 - safety requirements for wet-laid nonwoven machines.

Voith SE & Co. KG, Egon Krätschmer CFO Voith GmbH & Co. KGaA, Christian Knörzer Truetzschler Nonwovens & Man-Made Fibers GmbH and Thomas Kastler, Group Standardization J.M. Voith SE & Co. KG.

The newly developed ISO 22291 now enables manufacturers to design and implement standardized safety equipment. This reduces the amount of engineering work involved, leads to a lower accident risk, boosts a company’s competitive position and thus helps it tap into new markets. In the course of the introduction of the new standard, Voith chaired the Technical Committee ISO/TC 72/SC 8/WG 3 in the segment textile machines.

As a hybrid machine, the webforming machine can be used in both the textile and the paper industries. As different safety requirements apply in these two sectors, it was necessary to produce a customized international safety standard. This was particularly necessary because customers had very different expectations. This standard now defines, in a readily comprehensible way, the requirements that these machines have to meet to ensure safe operation.

Voith and Truetzschler jointly developed the manufacturing process for wet-laid and hydroentangled nonwovens. The production lines on which these materials are produced consist partly of paper machine components and partly of components from nonwoven machines. The manufacturing process for wet-laid nonwovens is similar to that for producing paper.

For more than 30 years, Voith has been supplying highly efficient and durable screen baskets for various screening applications in the stock preparation unit – with the aim of continuously improving screening efficiency. With SmartBasket, Voith is now offering an intelligent screen basket add-on tailored to customer requirements that is unique in the market. Thanks to the integrated RFID chip, customers have all the important information related to inventory, location and lifecycle status of their screen baskets at all times.

Given the large number of screen baskets used in the stock preparation unit and that are regularly exchanged, re-chromed or stored in the warehouse, it is a challenge for paper manufacturers to maintain an overview of their inventories in one or several paper mills. Manual documentation of the screen baskets in use and in stock, which has been the usual practice until now, is time-consuming, susceptible to error and results in high costs for inventory management. With SmartBasket, Voith is now offering an efficient, user-friendly solution for asset and lifecycle management of screen baskets, providing paper producers with maximum transparency and availability across all their manufacturing facilities.

Using a hand scanner, the RFID chip integrated into the screen basket is scanned and the data transferred to the mobile SmartBasket app via Bluetooth.Using a hand scanner, the RFID chip integrated into the screen basket is scanned and the data transferred to the mobile SmartBasket app via Bluetooth.

SmartBasket: Tracking with RFID chip
The new Voith screen baskets are equipped with an RFID chip. The baskets are scanned with a special hand scanner that is connected via Bluetooth to a smartphone or tablet and the associated SmartBasket app. This allows all relevant information – like the storage location, running time and condition of every single basket – to be added to a database. The data can be easily viewed in the user-friendly mobile app or in more detailed form via a cockpit solution, a web-based application with more extensive functions including Excel export.

Integrated lifecycle tracking and re-ordering
SmartBasket therefore provides an overview of the entire supply chain and paper manufacturers can optimize their inventory, as the lifecycle status can be tracked at all times. Another advantage of SmartBasket and the app for the customer is the direct connection to the Voith Paper Webshop. Just one click is all it takes to buy screen baskets online from the Webshop.

For intelligent paper manufacturing of the future
“The smart technology not only creates transparency at all levels; it also allows inventories and costs to be reduced,” says Christian Gommeringer, Strategic Global Product Manager at Voith. “The product reflects our forward-looking vision of making paper manufacture even more efficient using smart solutions. In this context, SmartBasket is the next important step toward Papermaking 4.0.” Voith will be adding other smart products to its range in future.

Thanks to various rebuild options, Voith’s BaglessPlus filter discs provide the basis for a resource-conserving and efficient dewatering process in machines built by other manufacturers as well. As of now, the bagless filter discs are also available for GL&V Celleco disc filters type CDI 5.0.

Since they were launched on the market in 1998, Voith’s BaglessPlus filter discs have become the market leader in their segment. Today, the dewatering systems with bagless discs form the basis for resource-conserving and efficient paper production around the globe. Even paper manufacturers that do not have Voith disc filters can enjoy the benefits of this innovative dewatering system, because the Heidenheim-based technology group offers rebuild options for almost all common types of machine.

BaglessPlus filter discs from Voith now guarantee that GL&V Celleco CDI 5.0 disc filters will also enjoy the lowest level of filtrate values over the entire lifetime of more than 15 years.BaglessPlus filter discs from Voith now guarantee that GL&V Celleco CDI 5.0 disc filters will also enjoy the lowest level of filtrate values over the entire lifetime of more than 15 years.

In future, operators of GL&V Celleco disc filters type CDI 5.0 will also be able to use Voith BaglessPlus filter discs. The BaglessPlus discs operate without filter bags. Because filter bags often tear during operation, the Voith technology reduces the number of unscheduled downtimes. Damaged bags also cause reduced dewatering efficiency, corresponding fiber losses and contamination of the filtrate. BaglessPlus discs, on the other hand, guarantee a consistently high quality of filtrate over the entire lifetime, so that it can be used at other sections of the paper machine. Thanks to the high filtrate quality, the fresh water requirement for the entire paper mill is therefore reduced. Another outstanding feature of the BaglessPlus product range is the lifetime of 15 years and more.

In December 2018, the first GL&V Celleco CDI 5.0 disc filter in Scandinavia was completely converted to BaglessPlus filter discs. The customer’s expectations have been confirmed in practice and the filtrate values are at the lowest level. Customers already appreciate the simple installation of the BaglessPlus discs using bottom flanges with side lugs. Voith’s filter discs are just as rigid as those previously used by the competitor. Tears in the filter bags are now a thing of the past and the filtrate quality is consistently high. Other customers in the USA have also ordered the BaglessPlus technology for their GL&V Celleco CDI 5.0 disc filters and these units are set to be commissioned soon.

The guests at the official opening ceremony included Alexej Moiseev, Deputy Russian Finance Minister and Chairman of the Board of Goznak, and Alexej Chibisov, Minister of Industry, Economic Affairs and Trade for the Perm region. In his address, Arkady Trachuk, General Director of Goznak, pointed out: “Within a few years, we worked with the designers, equipment suppliers and contractors to create a production complex that is one of the best in the world.”

In the background, the MasterVat and ShortFormer, which are the centerpiece of the new facility in Krasnokamsk. The technology they use forms the basis for the production of specialty papers with the strictest security features.

And Voith was on board from the very start. The technology group was responsible for the overall planning of the facility, providing expertise and technologies that were a crucial factor in the outstanding success of the new facility. Highly efficient machines from Voith, the integration of the group's innovative solutions and a high degree of automation allow Goznak to produce paper with cutting-edge security features.

One of the key components of the paper machine is the forming section. It contains a MasterVat, an optimized uniflow vat in which the watermark is created at the same time as the banknote paper, and the ShortFormer for the first ply of the two-ply papers. Both of these components ensure the high quality of the products. At the same time, they allow the integration of reliable security features or multi-colored watermarks.

The high degree of automation in Krasnokamsk is the cornerstone for the security of the papers. For example, there is an automatic quality control in all phases of paper production. At the same time, this increases the efficiency of the plant and helps to substantially reduce raw material losses and running costs.

Through their very close collaboration based on a spirit of trust and partnership, Voith and Goznak have created a benchmark for future plants with the facility in Krasnokamsk, says Wolfgang Neuss, Director Sales and Technology Banknote and Security Paper Machines at Voith.

Hamburger Rieger has engaged Voith to supply the complete stock preparation unit for its new PM 2 in Spremberg, Germany. Voith will deliver three separate stock preparation lines with a total capacity of 2,450 metric tons per day. Meri Environmental Solutions is responsible for the complete reject and water treatment facility.

  • OnEfficiency.DIP ensures high raw material quality and low running costs
  • Efficiency concept used for the first time for the production of packaging papers
  • Automatic adjustment of flotation technology and input of chemical additives
  • Virtual sensors predict contamination areas

The key to the stock preparation concept is the OnEfficiency.DIP (deinked pulp: recycled waste paper without color residues) system from Voith, which has already proven effective for the manufacture of graphic papers based on recovered paper. The efficiency concept is now being used for the first time in the production of packaging papers. In the stock preparation unit of the new PM 2, ultra-modern sensors and actuators ensure consistent raw material quality and low running costs.

The system consists of two DIP yield control modules, two DIP bleach control modules and a DIP optimizer. The DIP yield control module uses online sensors to measure the ash content and whiteness of the DIP stock. Using actuators, the flotation technology automatically adjusts it as necessary to obtain the required degree of whiteness. The DIP bleach control module also measures the whiteness before and after a bleaching step. If necessary, actuators also regulate the flow of chemical additives here as well. The control modules are connected with the DIP optimizer, which defines optimum target values based on the optimization of running costs. The cost model takes account of relevant parameters such as energy, raw material and chemicals. This dynamic interaction between the individual components reduces quality fluctuations, which occur thanks to the heterogeneity of the raw material or production adjustments. This at the same time improves production costs.

In the PM 2 in Spremberg, Voith is also testing a new prototype of a virtual sensor which uses the measurements in the stock storage tower and the process parameters to predict contamination areas. The DIP optimizer uses the model calculated in this process to optimally adjust the variables. The self-learning system allows for automated controls, which means that the full potential of the system can be reached sooner.

At present, only the OnEfficiency.DIP from Voith offers this kind of comprehensive performance. According to Hamburger Rieger this was a decisive factor in awarding the order for the stock preparation unit. With a tailored service package, Voith ensures that the OnEfficiency system will continue to perform optimally in the long term.

Following a groundbreaking ceremony on 26 September 2018, work began on Hamburger Rieger's new paper machine in Spremberg. From June 2020, the 7.8 m wide PM 2 will produce up to 500,000 metric tons a year of White Top Testliner with various basis weights. The two-loop DIP line produces the white top layer of the WTTL (White Top Test Liner). The paper manufacturer has opted for a particularly environmentally friendly de-inking system for stock preparation.

Hamburger Rieger is investing around EUR 370 million to build the PM 2 and is creating more than 200 new jobs in the Lusatia region. Hamburger Rieger is part of the Hamburger Containerboard Division of the Austrian Prinzhorn Group, whose annual production of more than two million metric tons makes it one of the market leaders in the segment for white uncoated and coated testliner.
