Lib Dem leader visits leading manufacturing firm

South Lakeland MP Tim Farron recently visited Cumbria-based manufacturing firm James Cropper PLC to hear about the latest developments at the company and discuss the challenges facing the industry.

Tim met with the CEO and group finance director of the company, and heard how James Cropper PLC continues to grow and develop, taking on more staff and expanding into new areas, in addition to their traditional paper business. Also on the agenda was the need for a British industrial strategy that supports the manufacturing industry, as well as the challenges that are faced post-Brexit.

2017 02 02 093759

Tim said: “It was fantastic to visit James Cropper once again and to hear about the exciting developments at the company, particularly as the firm expands into new markets. As the largest private sector employer in our area, the company’s success is good news for all of us.

“James Cropper is a shining example of the best of British manufacturing, complementing their traditional paper business with the latest technology and innovation, and creating skilled local jobs and apprenticeships. As a country, it is vital that we support businesses and develop the skill base required so that other firms can follow James Cropper’s example. I will also continue to push the government to ensure that any post-Brexit deal does not harm the ability of businesses like James Cropper to trade with the EU.”

Phil Wild, CEO at James Cropper, said: “The paper manufacturing industry has seen a lot of changes in recent years, so the need to innovate, develop and improve is more important than ever. Our people sit at the heart of these initiatives.

“Continued investment into research and development in technology, whether that’s in technology, equipment, product development or materials, is crucial for us to maintain and expand our foothold in the industry. We sell our products all over the world to sectors ranging from luxury goods to aerospace. Our customers demand information on the environmental impact and sustainability of our processes and on working practices. This is an increasingly important objective for businesses as they strive to reduce their impact on the environment. In the papermaking arm of the business, our unique coffee-cup reclaimed fibre plant has enabled us to become an unrivalled driving force in eco-friendly innovation in our sector.  In our Technical Fibre Products (TFP) business, new products have been introduced to provide super lightweight solutions for aerospace composite bodies; and the newest division 3D Products (3DP), provides sustainable alternatives to plastic packaging using highly engineered, brightly coloured moulded fibres.”

Isabelle Maddock, finance director at James Cropper, adds: “The global market continues to be essential for growth and development, with about 50 per cent of our products being exported. Post-Brexit, there is some concern about how it will affect industry in the UK. Britain offers a huge pool of knowledge and skills supporting innovation, therefore we would strongly oppose the introduction of tariffs as they restrict trade and ultimately have a detrimental effect on innovation, which is driven by the reinvestment of profits. That said, our global business model has proven to be robust and the group is well placed to face the challenges of Brexit.”

British master papermaker James Cropper plc paid tribute to the victims of the Battle of the Somme by providing the paper for thousands of special bleuet flowers, which accompanied the signature red poppies at the recent centenary commemoration.

2016 07 28 090842

The event took place at the Thiepval Memorial in France on 1 July, 100 years on from the first day of the infamous World War One assault. It saw attendees – which included TRH The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and HRH Prince Henry of Wales – don the blue flowers alongside their red poppies, while thousands of the bleuets were scattered across the site.

Organised by the UK and French Governments, in partnership with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and The Royal British Legion, the service saluted the one million casualties sustained on both sides during the 141-day battle. The Thiepval Memorial stands in commemoration to the missing of the Somme: the 72,000 men that have no known grave.

2016 07 28 090859

The bleuet de France is the symbol of memory and solidarity in France for veterans, victims of war, widows and orphans and is the country’s equivalent to the British and Canadian remembrance poppy.

Phil Wild CEO at James Cropper, said: “We’ve worked with the Royal British Legion for many years now, providing the paper for the signature red poppies, and it’s a cause that’s very close to our hearts. To have played a part in such an important tribute to those we lost a century ago by developing the paper bleuets was an honour.

2016 07 28 090915

“It was particularly powerful to see the poppies and bleuets shower the site together as a poignant mark of respect to the brave soldiers from both Britain and France who fought for their countries.”

James Cropper has won the Foodservice Packaging Association (FPA) Corporate Social Responsibility Award 2016.

The British master papermaker received the accolade for its support of the Burneside Community Energy (BCE) project – a social initiative to enable local residents to benefit from investment in renewable energy.

2016 04 05 070615

James Cropper Plc provided space for the installation of a 250KW Solar PV Array on the roof of its Burneside mill to help generate clean, green electricity in a way that doesn’t compromise the special ecology or superb landscape of Burneside and Cumbria.

The project, which launched in October 2015, is estimated to generate 193,000 kWh of renewable electricity per annum – enough to offset the energy requirements of James Cropper’s specialist laminating and technical coating facility and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.91 million kilograms over the next 20 years.

As well as the positive impact on the environment, the scheme will deliver a five per cent annual dividend to investors with an additional £50,000 provided for community projects.

The profits will be generated through the government’s feed in tariff and from the sale of electricity to James Cropper Plc as part of the manufacturer’s long term commitment to supporting the community of Burneside, and to reducing its carbon dioxide emissions.

Dave Watson, COO at James Cropper, said: “The Burneside Community Energy scheme rewards the parish and its investors with ethical energy and financial benefits, while helping to reduce our dependency on dwindling fossil fuels. The project brings environmental and social benefits to the community while providing a positive, sustainable legacy for future generations in Burneside.”

The FPA Awards were held at The Grand Hotel Brighton on 10 March with 460 FPA members in attendance. The awards are judged by an independent panel and are a highly respected accolade within the food industry.

James Cropper helps fashion a sustainable future

British master papermaker James Cropper has teamed up with long-standing client Selfridges for a dramatic art installation to promote sustainability in the fashion industry.

2016 03 09 143437

The large-scale sculpture, unveiled in all its glory to shoppers on 27 February, depicts two hands made from thousands of coloured paper cubes and is on show at the Exchange Square Manchester store of the luxury retailer – for whose signature yellow shopping bags James Cropper provides the paper.

The ‘hands of industry’ installation is a tribute to the concept of artisan craft mastered over generations. It was created by Lancashire artist Sam Robins, of studio Flow Creation, in partnership with the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester and was crafted entirely from a selection of James Cropper papers, made using reclaimed fibre from disposable paper cups.

2016 03 09 143451

The reclaimed fibre facility at James Cropper, which was opened by HM The Queen in 2013, uses a method that separates the paper from the plastic coating and currently processes the equivalent of 10 million paper cups per week from the off-cuts of paper cup manufacturers. The company has invested significantly in its plant and technology, to both develop its range of recycled materials and to ensure its own production methods are as sustainable as possible.

Susan Wilson, luxury packaging director at James Cropper, said: “Fashions may come and go, but a sense of style is forever. Similarly, we believe sustainability is more than a passing trend. This installation is about championing creativity with longevity – supported by the right mix of innovative and authentic production methods that respect the environment.”

2016 03 09 143510

The project comes as part of Selfridges’ dedication to sustainability in the fashion industry, through which it is encouraging its employees, partners and customers to buy responsibly and advocate sustainable products. With this art installation, the store is taking inspiration from the idea of ‘northern heritage’, focusing on northern companies that have a long history of manufacturing, have sustainable credentials and create products made using time honoured skills and production methods.

James Cropper has been making distinct, custom-made paper products from its base in the English Lake District since 1845 – working with many of the world’s leading art galleries, designers and luxury brands – and is a proud sponsor of other artists and exhibitions, including events at NYCxDesign, YSL at The Bowes and the ‘Paper Bar’ at London’s ICA for Thomas Pink’s Autumn/Winter 2015 collection.

Paper and Fashion unite on the catwalk

British master papermaker James Cropper recently teamed up with influential fashion designer Edeline Lee to deliver the paper for the set of her Autumn/Winter 2016 show at London Fashion Week.

The heritage paper manufacturer supplied beautiful and tactile papers for the scenography of the show, which took place on 19 February at The Vinyl Factory and marked the designer’s second collection to be exhibited at the prestigious event.

2016 03 03 103226

Canadian-born, London-based Edeline has gained international recognition for her dynamic fashion presentations, which have the immersive quality of film and live performance. She has apprenticed in the studios of Alexander McQueen and John Galliano, and worked at Zac Posen in New York and Rodnik in London, where she was head designer. She counts celebrities Alicia Vikander, Taylor Swift and Solange Knowles among her fans.

Speaking of the collaboration with James Cropper, Edeline said: “Over the years, I’ve learnt how every detail counts when it comes to creating luxury, which is why I wanted the paper for this set to come from a like-minded brand for which quality is paramount. All my designs are made by hand in England, so James Cropper, as an innately British company with an impressive heritage, was a perfect match.”

A chequerboard pattern was created using paper from James Cropper’s ‘Black’ and ‘Ambassador’ ranges, while height was achieved with shaped mounds of predominantly white shredded paper interspersed with bright accents from ‘Vanguard’ colours. The colourful and playful abstract paper shapes created a landscape behind the models that was anchored by the powerful black and white base to the scheme.

2016 03 03 103333

Susan Wilson, luxury packaging director at James Cropper, said: “There is, of course, a potent link between paper and fashion design. Being involved in this beautiful project maintains our public support for initiatives that champion creativity and, more specifically, how integral paper is to artistic processes. Edeline Lee continues to push boundaries with her designs and presentations and we’re proud to have come together for London Fashion Week. The show was magnificent!”

The artist behind the scenography was Kyung Roh Bannwart, who Edeline previously worked with on her Spring/Summer 2016 collection. She employs various media, including sculpture, sound light and objects, to build structure and create an emotional and physical experience.

The paper used for the presentation is destined to be recycled, aligned with James Cropper’s dedication to sustainability within the paper sector. The company has invested significantly in its plant and technology, to both develop its range of recycled materials and to ensure its own production methods are as sustainable as possible.

James Cropper supplies distinct, custom-made paper products to many of the world’s leading art galleries, designers and luxury brands – providing the paper for Selfridges’ signature yellow bags –  and is a proud sponsor of other artists and exhibitions, including events at NYCxDesign, YSL at The Bowes and the fabulous ‘Paper Bar’ at London’s ICA for Thomas Pink’s Autumn/Winter 2015 collection.

British master papermaker James Cropper has announced a trial recycling partnership with McDonald’s UK, as the two explore pioneering moves in sustainability and recycling.

The partnership will enable paper cups used in McDonald’s restaurants across the UK, every week, to be recycled at James Cropper’s state-of-the-art reclaimed fibre plant – turning previously non-recyclable, plastic-coated paper cups into new paper products.

2016 01 25 111815

Richard Burnett, market development manager at James Cropper, said: “It’s estimated that up to 2.5 billion paper cups are used in the UK every year. Most of these are currently not recycled as, being polyethylene-coated, they can’t be recycled amongst ordinary household waste. In addition, collecting used paper cups for recycling has been problematic due to the nature of their use – they’re used on the go and are often taken away from the place of purchase”.

“The partnership with McDonald’s has been nearly two years in the making and signifies an important step towards recycling used paper cups and, ultimately, reducing waste going to landfill. By collaborating with McDonald’s, we’re working towards an effective scheme that can recoup as many used paper cups as possible, which can then go back into the supply chain.”

2016 01 25 111833The trial recycling scheme – a UK first – has been rolled out across 150 of McDonald’s 1250 UK restaurants so far.  Paper cups are collected from McDonald’s and then baled by Simply Cups, the UK’s only paper cup recovery and recycling scheme, before being delivered to James Cropper for reprocessing. Reclaimed fibre can then be used in everything from brochures and stationery to designer gift boxes.

Helen McFarlane, sustainability consultant at McDonald’s UK, added: “Paper cups constitute about 30% of our packaging waste and this is a great opportunity to ensure that the quality fibre used in making those cups gets another life. We have recently started to introduce recycling stations in our restaurants to allow customers to separate paper cups, and we’re eager to see what this trial with James Cropper and Simply Cups will look like, hopefully helping set up the infrastructure for others to use in future.”

Richard continued: “With the demand for eco-friendly products rising we’re seeing more and more clients interested in using reclaimed fibre as part of their paper requirements, in luxury shopping bags and company literature, for instance. This ground-breaking trial with McDonald’s demonstrates how organisations can work together to create a mutually beneficial, effective and sustainable supply chain. Businesses can use ‘green’ processes and schemes to simultaneously minimise waste and utilise an otherwise waste material as a new product .”

The partnership with McDonald’s is just the start of the journey to make widespread post-consumer paper cup recycling a reality.

The reclaimed fibre facility at James Cropper, which was opened by HM The Queen in 2013, uses a method which separates the paper from the plastic coating, and currently processes the equivalent of 10 million paper cups per week from the off cuts of paper cup manufacturers.

The process results in no wastage whatsoever – with 90 per cent of the cup waste being converted back into FSC® certified fibre for paper production and the remaining 10 per cent, which is plastic, being repurposed as garden furniture, for example.
