Metsä Board strengthens its packaging design services

Metsä Board operates Packaging Service teams on three continents – Europe, the Americas and APAC – to jointly, with customers, create lighter, more environmentally friendly and efficient packaging. Metsä Board is delighted to announce that the teams will be further strengthened with new design expertise following the appointments of Marko Leiviskä and Iiro Numminen.

Marko Leiviskä, Metsä Board’s new Graphic Packaging Designer, has a strong global background working for brand owners, converters and board mills. This experience has given him a unique perspective on how packaging can strengthen a brand and this role will allow him to combine his technical skills into design and brand strategy. He moves to Metsä Board from OneMusketeer Oy, where he worked as an entrepreneur and head of design. He has experience of designing and conceptualising global campaigns for companies like Metsä Board, Stora Enso, Kotkamills, Walki Group and Woikoski. Before OneMusketeer, he worked for Konsepti Advertising and Drum Communications.

Iiro Numminen, Metsä Board’s new Structural Packaging Designer, has worked as a structural designer for almost eight years and has a deep knowledge of production methods related to the conversion of paperboard as well as digital tools. He constantly seeks new innovative ways to use the fibre based materials. His latest innovation ‘Stretching Inner Part’ was chosen as the winner of Metsä Board’s Better with Less – Design Challenge in 2018. He moves to Metsä Board from the packaging design team at Pa-Hu Oy, a manufacturer of corrugated board and packaging solutions.

Says Ilkka Harju, Packaging Services Director, EMEA: “We are pleased to have extended our global Packaging Services expertise with the appointments of both Marko and Iiro. Both are highly experienced designers with extensive knowledge of the requirements for sustainable, efficient and high impact branding and packaging.”

The new eco-barrier paperboard, MetsäBoard Pro FSB EB1, which is manufactured by Metsä Board, the leading European producer of premium lightweight paperboards, has recently achieved the industrial compostability certification complying with DIN EN 13432 and ASTM D6400 standards. The certification is issued by DIN CERTCO and the testing was carried out by ISEGA laboratories.

Katja Tuomola, Business Development Director at Metsä Board, commented upon this important development: “Brand owners are looking for new, more ecological solutions made of renewable, non-plastic materials, which can be composted and recycled. This external certification helps them choose packaging materials that truly comply with their disposal requirements.”

2019 01 30 085904

DIN EN 13432 standard refers to ‘Requirements for Packaging Recoverable through Composting and Biodegradation’. US certification ASTM D 6400-12 covers the ‘Standard Specification for Labelling of Plastics Designed to be Aerobically Composted in Municipal or Industrial Facilities’.

The non-plastic special barrier treatment developed for MetsäBoard Pro FSB EB1 improves the grease resistance of the board and makes it an ecological and efficient packaging material for food, takeaway and food-on-the-go applications. The grease resistance can be cost-efficiently enhanced further at the converting stage with the addition of just one varnish layer. The product is safe for direct food contact and no optical brighteners (OBA free) or fluorochemicals have been used in the production. It is available in basis weights of 195–320 g/m2 and can be recycled with paper and board recycling schemes.

On 24 January Metsä Board’s Husum mill, in Sweden, celebrates its 100-year anniversary. The mill started as a pulp mill in 1919 with a capacity of 20,000 tonnes of unbleached softwood kraft pulp. Today Metsä Board Husum is a modern and efficient integrated mill site with production capacities of 400,000 tonnes folding boxboard, 250,000 tonnes white kraftliner and 730,000 tonnes of bleached hardwood and softwood pulps.

During the past years Metsä Board has developed the mill heavily. In 2015 one of the paper machines was converted to a white kraftliner machine. The new folding boxboard machine started up in 2016 and a 100,000-tonne extrusion line a year after in 2017. The products are used for a wide variety of demanding end-uses in consumer, retail packaging and food service globally with the added logistics benefit of the mill’s own deep-sea port.

“Over the years the Husum site has been successfully adapted and improved ensuring an ongoing commitment to driving greater efficiency and market leading product development. However, none of this would have been achieved without the support of our dedicated employees,” states Olov Winblad von Walter, VP, Metsä Board Husum Board and Pulp Mill.

The winner of the international packaging design competition Better with Less – Design Challenge has been chosen. Exceptionally high-quality entries were submitted, and the winning design ‘Stretching Inner Part’ by Iiro Numminen, was considered by the judges to be extremely appealing, versatile, scalable and easy to implement.

The Better with Less – Design Challenge, organised by Metsä Board, aimed to find new environmentally-friendly and functional packaging solutions for some of the world’s most frequently used and fastest growing types of consumer packages. Launched in November 2017, the competition inspired designers around the world – altogether 302 design concepts were entered from 38 different countries. The international competition jury included renowned packaging design experts from various fields – related to packaging, design, brand strategy and innovation.

2018 05 31 110349

The winning design “Stretching Inner Part” was submitted into the e-commerce category. It is a corrugated box inner part that allows variable sized products to be packed without the need for bubble wrap. This versatile product could be used to pack various types of items and it ensures that the product stays attached to the package during transportation. Numminen will receive the main prize of 10,000 euros for his design.

“The winning design successfully eliminates the need for plastic thermoformed inserts of bubble wrap. The balance between the rigidity of the board and the strength required to support the product weight is well-thought through. This design is extremely appealing, versatile, scalable and adaptable for wide number of uses,” states the chairperson of the competition jury, Cyril Drouet, Design & Innovation Director of Metsä Board.

The 1st honorary mention went to the ‘Plastic banning toilet roll’ by Jeroen Caelen. His work was submitted to the ‘wild-card’ category. This new type of toilet paper packaging consists of a hexagonal tube designed from paperboard which also functions as a toilet paper roll holder. It appealed to both the judges and the wider audience as it was also the public’s favourite design.

The 2nd honorary mention was awarded to ‘The Moisture face creme cosmetic package’ designed by Abdullah Cam. The re-usable paperboard package is combined with a changeable plastic inner part. This solution makes plastic or foil coating unnecessary and recycling the package easier.

Pawel Krawczugo took home the 3rd honorary mention with his design ‘TWIST’, an inconspicuous but functional packaging design intended for the cosmetics industry and other industries. Both the 2nd and 3rd honorary awarded entries were submitted into the cosmetics category.

Metsä Board also offered an additional prize of an internship for one student with its packaging services team in Shanghai. ‘The Playing nature’, a snack packaging design that transforms into small puppets for children to play with, by Alessandro Grossi won the judges over in the student category.

“The honorary mentions and winner of the student category represent functional and fresh package designs with sustainability and consumer experience being at their core. Consumers are looking for brands and packaging that engage them, entertain and most of all connect them with good storytelling. Packages that are designed with sustainable materials and use materials smartly have a great story to tell and help enhance the consumer experience,” Drouet explains.

Metsä Board, the leading European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards, is pleased to announce that its revolutionary paperboard cup design, ‘Lidloc’, has won an iF Design Award at a prestigious awards ceremony held at the BMW Welt in Munich on 9 March.

The Lidloc design has broken new ground in paperboard cup design and recognises the increased focus upon developing sustainable packaging. The design has a patent pending and is based upon an extension to a standard cup structure that folds and locks into an integrated lid.

2018 03 13 091342

Cyril Drouet, Metsä Board’s Design & Innovation Director has worked closely on this exciting project with his design team. He explains the benefits of this innovative design: “We have designed this to be a one-piece construction that removes the need for a separate plastic lid. It is easy to fold and assemble with a secure lid-locking design. The integrated lid is spill proof and offers extra branding power as it can be printed as one piece with the rest of the cup. The lid also contains an integrated ‘sip’ mechanism for hot beverages as well as being ideal for cold drinks with a straw.”

Lidloc is an example of how Metsä Board develops lighter, more environmentally friendly and more efficient packaging and helps to use the potential of lightweight fresh fibre paperboards in an innovative way.

For over 60 years, the iF Design Award has been recognised the world over as a label for design excellence. The international high-profile jury assessed more than 6,400 entries from 54 countries to determine who would receive this coveted seal of design excellence.
