Metsä Board, a leading European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboard, have just announced that its North American customers can now use Metsä Board’s products with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) on-product label that recognises global PEFC™ certifications. Metsä Board is the first European paperboard manufacturer to be approved to use this opportunity. A new rule under the SFI allows PEFC™ chain of custody manufacturers, with PEFC™ certified content from countries outside of the United States and Canada, to be able to use an SFI ‘global’ on-product label. SFI® is an independent North American forest certification programme endorsed by PEFC™.

The whole Metsä Group, including Metsä Board, supports forest certification schemes and encourages their adoption worldwide. Nina Happonen, VP Sales Americas, says: “The wood we procure always comes from certified or controlled forests, which means that we ensure its legality as well as the responsibility and sustainability of the whole supply chain. Of the wood we use, 80% is certified forest content according to the world's leading forest certification systems: PEFC™ or FSC®. We are happy now to be able to offer, in addition, the use of SFI on-product label to our customers in North America.”

Metsä Board, the leading producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards launched the Better with Less – Design Challenge last November. This international packaging design competition aims to find new more environmentally-friendly and functional packaging solutions for some of the world’s most frequently used and fastest growing types of consumer packages, including takeaway meals, e-commerce, wellness, cosmetics and dry food.

We are happy to announce that the competition has now joined forces with the Pro Carton Young Designers Award, which will provide the benefit that all student participants will have two chances to win with one great idea.

2018 01 26 122029

Pro Carton is the European Association of Carton and Cartonboard Manufacturers who through their competition wants to encourage innovative design with cartonboard and reduce, or replace plastic.

Therefore, the two competitions perfectly complement each other, and recognise the global emphasis needed on promoting young packaging design talent and developing sustainable packaging designs using renewable materials.

Since its launch in November, the Better with Less – Design Challenge has aroused a lot of positive attention globally and a number of exciting entries have already been received. The competition is being supported by an international jury consisting of renowned brand and packaging experts including Lars G. Wallentin, Terri Goldstein, Marianne Rosner Klimchuk, Peter Désilets, John B. Mahaffie, and Cyril Drouet.

Competition chairman Cyril Drouet, Design & Innovation Director, Metsä Board comments: “We are very excited by this development with Pro Carton as participants now have two chances to win with their design proposal. To create a true impact in the world we need to join forces and take action across the whole packaging chain.  As consumption of packaging grows, we need to think about the packaging lifecycle from start to finish, and inspire discussion and innovation on more sustainable and experimental packaging.  The Better with Less – Design Challenge is one forum to do this and the great response received so far shows there’s lots of new ideas emerging.”

Registration for the Better with Less – Design Challenge is open for designers and design students until 31 March 2018 at: www.betterwithless.org. The main prize is EUR 10,000, and for students there is an additional prize of an internship opportunity for one student with Metsä Board’s packaging services team in Shanghai. The finalists and the winners for the Better with Less – Design Challenge will be announced during Spring 2018 and the Pro Carton Young Designers Award will be announced in September.

Billions of consumer packages are consumed globally every day, and the amount is growing. The Better with Less – Design Challenge is challenging packaging designers to create ever more environmentally-friendly, functional packaging solutions for everyday goods. The international competition jury includes renowned packaging design experts.

Better with Less – Design Challenge started on the 6th November, 2017. The international packaging design competition, organized by Metsä Board, aims to find new packaging solutions for some of the world’s most frequently used and fastest growing types of consumer packages.

2017 12 17 235322Billions of consumer packages are consumed globally every day, and as the population continues to grow, so will the number of packages. The high amount of plastic used in packaging is an international concern, in part because globally the plastic waste inputs into the oceans amount annually to almost nine million tonnes.

Packages will continue to have an important role in protecting and promoting products in the future, but as consumption grows, it’s becoming ever more important to develop packaging solutions that enable the use of renewable, non-fossil based materials and a wiser use of resources. Metsä Board recognises that packaging designers play a decisive role in this and that environmental impacts can be reduced, for example, by making packaging lighter, using renewable materials and making recycling easier.

“Packaging design can have a big impact on the environment. We need  to come up with new solutions and consider future generations – and think of ways we can create better consumer experiences that create less impact on the environment. With this competition, we aim to help advance innovative and sustainable packaging design in the world“, states the competition jury chairman and member of the competition jury Cyril Drouet, Design & Innovation Director, Metsä Board.

The competition will be judged by an international jury, including a number of renowned packaging design experts: Terri Goldstein, branding and packaging design professional. Peter Désilets, strategist and specialist in packaging sustainability aspects. Marianne Rosner Klimchuk, packaging design expert and Chair at Communication Design Pathways Department of Fashion Institute of Technology. Lars G. Wallentin, packaging designer who’s worked with worldwide known brands and John B. Mahaffie, futurist with primary expertise in future packaging solutions.

Registration is opened from 6 November, 2017 to the 31 March 2018, at: ww.betterwithless.org. New packaging solutions can be designed for consumer packages, for example, takeaway meals, e-commerce, wellness, cosmetics and dry food packages.

The main prize for the Better with Less – Design Challenge is EUR 10,000. The competition is also open to students, and Metsä Board will offer as an additional prize the opportunity of an internship for one student with its packaging services team in Shanghai. The finalists and the winners will be announced during Spring 2018.

Metsä Board is delighted to announce the startup of its new extrusion coating line at its Husum mill in Sweden. The new state-of the-art coating line has an annual capacity of about 100,000 tonnes and represented an investment of EUR 38 million. At the same site Metsä Board operates a 270,000 tonnes efficient  linerboard machine and Europe’s most modern folding boxboard machine, which started production at the beginning of 2016 with yearly capacity of 400,000 tonnes.

The new extrusion coating line is now producing first orders and it will serve the global food service market and offer improved availability and competitive products. Metsä Board’s PE coated paperboards respond to the tight requirements of the food service market by providing product safety, purity and protection. The paperboards are made of pure and renewable fresh fibres and are a preferred alternative to plastics for cups, plates and other takeaway packaging as well as for frozen food packaging. The paperboards also offer great value for other consumer goods and food service packaging. Currently PE is the most common barrier against moisture and water for food and food service packaging.

“In developing the new PE coated grades we have utilised our longstanding board making expertise combined with the latest technology. We have an integrated facility at Husum which is a clear advantage. We are sourcing wood close to the mill and producing pulp, board and extrusion-coated board in the same facility with an excellent location near the harbour. This enables us to minimise transport and improve the efficiency and sustainability of the supply chain which is important to us and our customers,” states CEO Mika Joukio.

Metsä Board is continuing development work on other innovative barrier solutions including the use of bio-based materials.

Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, presented a revolutionary new paperboard cup design concept called ‘Lidloc’ for the first time at the Packaging Innovations Exhibition held in Birmingham, United Kingdom, on 1–2 March.

2017 03 07 091102

The Lidloc patented design is based upon an extension to a standard cup structure that folds and locks into an integrated lid. This innovative design completely removes the need for a separate plastic lid and will re-invent how paperboard cups are produced, consumed and recycled.

Cyril Drouet, Metsä Board’s Design & Innovation Director has worked closely on this exciting project with his design team and recently presented the Lidloc concept to an invited audience at the Packaging Innovations exhibition. He explains the benefits of this innovative design: “We have designed this to be a one-piece construction that removes the need for a separate plastic lid. It is easy to fold and assemble with a secure lid-locking design. The integrated lid is spill proof and offers extra branding power as it can be printed as one piece with the rest of the cup. The lid also contains an integrated ‘sip’ mechanism for hot beverages as well as being ideal for cold drinks with a straw.”

2017 03 07 091123

Lidloc is an example of how Metsä Board is supporting customers to enhance their brands by delivering sustainable and innovative packaging solutions. All Metsä Board’s paperboards are made from a renewable resource – fresh fibres. The fibres are of known origin and they help ensure purity and brightness of appearance.
