Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, has achieved Leadership status in the materials sector of CDP’s 2016 Forest Programme for the second year in a row. This follows swiftly on the news that CDP recently recognised Metsä Board’s management of water security and climate change with A-List positions in both programmes.

For Metsä Board, a key part of sustainable forestry is forest renewal. “Here in Finland, four new seedlings are planted for each harvested tree. Metsä Group delivers seedlings to forest-owners for planting, and during the past couple of years this has amounted annually to 30 million seedlings, which is an impressive number,” says Mika Joukio, Metsä Board’s CEO.

Metsä Board promotes forest certification in all operating regions to conserve biodiversity and to ensure multiple use of forests. Metsä Board actively participates in development of certification via its parent company Metsä Group. All the wood the company uses is traceable and comes from certified or controlled forests.

Metsä Board is a leading European producer of folding boxboards and white linerboards made from fresh fibres. Its lightweight paperboards are developed as the perfect fit for consumer goods, retail-ready and food service packaging. The pure fresh fibres Metsä Board uses are a renewable resource, traceable to origin in northern forests.

The global sales network of Metsä Board supports customers worldwide, including brand owners, converters and merchants. In 2015, the company’s sales totalled EUR 2.0 billion, and it has approximately 2,600 employees. Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, is listed on the Nasdaq Helsinki.

2016 11 22 184923Metsä Board has been recognised by CDP as a global leader for its actions and strategies to manage water more sustainably. This is the second consecutive year that Metsä Board has been positioned on the CDP Water A List, where only 4% of the companies disclosing were accepted.

The CDP Water A List was announced last year for the first time. Metsä Board was honoured to be one of the eight companies on the 2015 list. This year 607 companies disclosed their water management to CDP, and Metsä Board is one of only 24 global companies to make the 2016 Water A List.

“We’re delighted to have again earned a spot on the CDP Water A List among the world’s best performing companies on water security,” says Mika Joukio, CEO of Metsä Board. “Metsä Board’s mills are located in one of the most water rich areas in the world. However, we still use our water resources efficiently and seek continuously new ways to reduce its use. Responsible water management is a vital part in our resource efficiency programme as reduced water use improves our energy and production efficiency.”

For several years now Metsä Board has had extensive development projects to further improve water use and material efficiency. Metsä Board uses only surface water in its production, and around 98% of the used water is returned to its source after careful cleaning. This ensures that the environment surrounding Metsä Board’s mills is not affected by the water used.

Furthermore, Mika Joukio was proud to have been invited to take part in a discussion panel at the CDP Global Water Forum on 15 November in Marrakesh where the water results were revealed. The CDP Water A List has been produced at the request of 643 investors with US$67 trillion in assets. It is available on CDP’s website.

We are continuously looking for new areas of improving energy efficiency at our production units, “ says Mika Joukio, CEO of Metsä Board. “In addition, our fresh fibre paperboards are lightweight, safe and recyclable, and therefore benefit the whole packaging value chain.”

Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, announced on 4 August 2016 that it was planning to close down the wallpaper base machine (PM3) located at its Kyro mill in Hämeenkyrö, Finland, and to discontinue its loss-making wallpaper base production. In 2015, sales from Kyro’s paper business totalled EUR 50 million, and the operating result was EUR -5 million.

2014 01 30 083551The statutory labour negotiations, which affected all of the 250 people working at the mill, have been completed. As a result, the Kyro mill wallpaper base machine PM3 will be closed down and the number of personnel at the mill will decrease by 94 people.

Metsä Board’s third quarter result is estimated to include non-recurring net costs of around EUR 9 million related to the closure. The closure is estimated to have a positive cash impact of around EUR 10 million, the majority of which consists of working capital released during the fourth quarter.

The folding boxboard machine with annual capacity of 190,000 tonnes will remain at the Kyro mill, producing premium packaging board for beauty and healthcare products and graphics end uses, among other things. In addition, Hämeenkyrön Voima’s biopower plant producing heat and electricity is located in the mill area.

2014 01 30 083551Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, is planning to close down its wallpaper base machine PM3 and discontinue its loss-making wallpaper base manufacturing at the Kyro mill in Hämeenkyrö, Finland. The demand for wallpaper base is decreasing globally, and Metsä Board is focusing on paperboard, meaning that wallpaper base production is not included in the company’s core business operations. In 2015, sales from Kyro’s paper business operations totalled EUR 50 million, and the operating result was EUR -5 million.

In addition to the planned close down of the wallpaper base machine PM3, Metsä Board has a need to adjust and improve operations at the Kyro mill in order to increase its competitiveness. Therefore the company will commence related statutory labour negotiations covering all employees at the mill. According to the plan, the estimated personnel effect is up to 100 employees. All in all approximately 250 employees currently work at the Kyro mill.

After implementing possible changes, the folding boxboard machine, with an annual capacity of 190,000 tonnes, will still continue operating at the Kyro mill. In addition, Hämeenkyrön Voima’s biopower plant, producing heat and electricity, is located in the mill area.

Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, will demonstrate an innovative new ‘bag in box’ concept for the first time at Drupa 2016. The ‘Elevated drink box’ (EDB), designed and patented by Metsä Board, is an easy and convenient way for consumers to enjoy beverages. The box was produced by combining the expertise of Metsä Board, BOBST, Kodak, Marbach, Henkel, and Knauer.

Cyril Drouet, Metsä Board’s Design and Innovation Director explains: “Our aim was to completely re-think the concept and design user-friendly packaging with real benefits for the consumer and the brand. Thanks to our elevated base design, the box doesn’t have to be placed on the edge of a table anymore, which gives the consumer the freedom to use this packaging anywhere.”

The box does not take up additional shelf space in-store as the elevated base is inside the packaging, ready for assembly by the consumer before use. When empty, the plastic bag is easily removed from the box, helping with material separation for recycling.

The fresh forest fibre paperboards used in the packaging are manufactured by Metsä Board. The outer liner is Kemiart Lite+, which is a double-coated white-top kraftliner for flexo post-print and digital printing applications. The fluting and inner liner are made of Modo Northern Light, a fully bleached liner suitable for offset, flexo and inkjet digital printing.

At Drupa 2016 Metsä Board’s Koen Verplancke, Technical Development Director, will make a presentation, ‘Convenience combined with digital printing – Elevated drink box (EDB)’ on 4th and 6th June as part of the Touchpoint Packaging sessions in hall 12 B53. During Drupa the Elevated drink box can also be seen and tested at the following exhibitor stands:

  • Metsä Board hall 12 C43
  • Bobst hall 10 A60
  • Henkel hall 14 B04
  • Kodak hall 05 F09
  • Marbach hall 10 D50

After considerable structural changes Husum mill is now an integrated site concentrating on paperboard and pulp manufacturing. It is also a significant local employer. The EUR 170 million investment programme included a folding boxboard machine BM1 supplied by Valmet as well as enhancements to the pulp mill and the mill site’s own port. The capacity of the new machine is 400,000 t/a. The company is targeting the volume at the Americas and at food service end-uses globally.

“The Husum mill site has the best available technology, people with extensive know-how and access to an ideal location by the sea where the mill has its own port. These important success factors will also support our customers in their businesses,” says Mika Joukio, CEO of Metsä Board.

Last November, Metsä Board announced an additional EUR 38 million investment in a new extrusion coating line and related infrastructure at Husum. This line will be taken into use during the first half of 2017. With this investment the company will be able to further improve its offering to food and food service end-uses.

Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, has started up a new folding boxboard production line at its Husum mill in Sweden. The company is aiming the 400,000 t/a volume of the production line at the Americas, as well as at food service end-uses such as cups, plates and trays globally.

2016 02 04 085140

“Metsä Board is well known for its high-quality, lightweight folding boxboards, used widely in packaging globally. Thanks to the new production line and our recent product development, we are now able to respond to food service packaging requirements and demand better than ever before,” comments CEO Mika Joukio.

Several suppliers have brought their best expertise to the production line project from planning to start-up. During the actual installation phase of the folding boxboard machine, spanning from mid-October until January, over a thousand external workers were employed at Husum. After the start-up, the target is to assure smooth running and high product quality as soon as possible.

The folding boxboard machine BM1, supplied by Valmet, is the most significant part of the EUR 170 million investment programme carried out at Metsä Board’s Husum mill site. As part of the programme, enhancements have also been made at the pulp mill and the mill site’s own port. As a whole this investment programme completes the company’s transformation process to a pure paperboard company.

Last November, Metsä Board also announced it is investing an additional EUR 38 million in a new extrusion coating line and related infrastructure in Husum. This line will be taken into use at the beginning of 2017.

Metsä Board is continuing a EUR 170 million investment programme at its Husum mill in Sweden. From mid-October till the beginning of January 2016 the company is installing a new folding boxboard machine, BM1, at the mill and closing down paper machines PM6 and PM7.

2015 10 12 093131

”Resource efficiency and product safety have become even more important in consumer, retail-ready and food service packaging. As a result, customer demand for our pure fresh forest fibre based paperboards is growing. We want to respond by offering our customers high-quality paperboards also developed for new kinds of end-uses,” states CEO Mika Joukio.

Metsä Board is marketing the new board machine’s 400 000 t/a capacity to the Americas, as well as to food service end-uses such as cups, plates and trays globally. The new board machine will also allow the company to optimise production at its mills in Finland and improve overall availability of high-quality paperboards.

This year many improvements supporting the company’s growth have already been carried out at the Husum mill site, both at the pulp mill and at its own port. Paper machine PM8 has been switched, as BM2, to production of white fresh forest fibre linerboard, with a capacity of 300 000 t/a. Metsä Board is marketing this linerboard output mainly to the Americas and Europe both for food and general packaging. The company is also continuing uncoated fine paper business reels production on BM2, planned to cease by the end of 2017 at the latest. Based on the increasing linerboard production and the closure of paper machines PM6 and PM7, approximately 500 000 t/a paper production capacity will disappear from the market by the end of 2015.

In accordance with its strategy, Metsä Board is focusing on fresh forest fibre based folding boxboards and linerboards, developed as the perfect fit for consumer goods, retail-ready and food service packaging. Following the Husum investments, the company’s paperboard capacity will exceed 2 million t/a, from the beginning of 2016.
