Technical concept convinces Stora Enso Sachsen

Stora Enso Sachsen, Germany, placed the order for the rebuild of Eilenburg PM 1 with Voith Paper. In this case, Voith's technical concept for the rebuild was convincing. The rebuild comprises former, press, dryer section as well as calender and air system. The installation of a NipcoFlex press and the rebuild of the existing calender to a Janus calender by reusing some of the existing components must be mentioned in particular.

Stora Enso Sachsen would like to improve paper quality as well as runability by the rebuild of PM 1. Furthermore, the operating speed of the production line is to be increased to 2,000 m/min. The rebuild is scheduled for May 2012.

PM 1 produces newsprint and telephone directory paper in a basis-weight range of 34-48.8 g/m2 from 100% recovered paper.

Stora Enso will record a provision with a cash impact of approximately USD 180 million (about EUR 128 million) as a negative non-recurring item (NRI) in its third quarter 2011 results due to NewPage Corporation’s Chapter 11 filing in the USA. On 7 September 2011 NewPage voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 protection under the US Bankruptcy Code to reorganise its debt.

When Stora Enso North America, Inc (SENA) was divested to NewPage, the Stevens Point Mill Paper Machine (PM) 35 lease obligation was transferred from Stora Enso to NewPage. However, as explained in the Group’s Financial Statements since 2007, Stora Enso remained as guarantor of the lease. Stora Enso intends to recover a portion of the recorded cost related to the lease obligation in NewPage’s restructuring.

In the second quarter of 2009 Stora Enso wrote down to zero value its 19.9% shareholding in NewPage and the vendor note it holds.

Upgrading the KU 1 Pulp Drying Machine

The KU 1 pulp drying machine in Stora Enso's Kaukopää plant in Imatra is being upgraded, with the aim of improving the fibre balance in the production of the Imatra plant. The productive capacity of the drying machine will be increased by about 30% for all pulp types.

CTS Engtec is overseeing the planning of the upgrade process. The project includes process, plant, electric, automation, heating and ventilation, and structural design as well as the project management for the design stage.

The targets of the project include changes to pulp preparation and the wire and press sections, raising the steam pressure of the drying cabinet, the improvement of recirculation fans and ventilation, modification to the sheeter, upgrading of the wrapping machine, modification to the dropping device, updating of the automation system, improvement to the baling line, and upgrading of the bale management and bale storage systems.

The increased drying capacity in turn enables the Imatra chemical pulp mill to improve its overall capacity and minimize production and quality inconsistencies. A more uniform quality of chemical pulp contributes to the reduction of the grammage of the final product. An increase in chemical pulp production will improve the energy consumption of the whole company.

The upgraded pulp dryer will be in use at the end of 2011.

Sweco Wins Major Order in Poland

Sweco's industry consultants have signed a major contract from Stora Enso in connection to its investment in a new paper machine in Stora Enso Poland Ostroka Mill. The contract is worth approximately SEK 50 million.

Stora Enso is investing EUR 285 million in a new paper machine in order to increase the production of paper for corrugated packaging products at the pulp and paper mill in north western Poland. Recycled fibres will be used as raw materials in the new paper machine that will have an annual capacity of about 455 000 tonnes.

"We are pleased to have received this contract and that Stora Enso has chosen us in order to increase production capacity at the Ostroka Mill. This is also a sign that the market is beginning to turn upwards again after a long period of low industrial investments, particularly in the European based pulp and paper industry. This is the second major contract we have signed in a short time," says Kari Harsunen, President of Sweco Industry.

The scope of the work includes process, layout, piping, electrical, automation, HVAC and fire protection engineering and will be mainly executed by Sweco Industry in Finland but also partly by local sub engineering companies in Poland. The overall implementation of the project will take about two years.

“Stora Enso ended the second quarter with a solid operating profit. On the one side, the market environment and our own efforts allowed us to improve pricing on a broad scale year-on-year. On the other side, cost inflation offset a significant part of that result, so we could improve our operating profit only marginally. This is why we continue our never-ending effort to improve our cost base and flexibility, for example the plans announced within Fine Paper and Logistics.

“Some of our geographical markets, specifically coated fine paper in Europe, have in recent weeks shown signs of slowing down compared with the recovery in 2010. This, in addition to the European debt crisis, makes us and our customers see the short-term future as volatile and difficult to forecast. In this situation, it is crucial that we are prepared for more than one short-term demand scenario. All the capabilities and flexibility we have built up and are building up within Stora Enso – be it in maintenance support, administration outsourcing or logistics – are invaluable in the changing environment.

“Finally, we are also continuing to execute our strategic growth path, with the Montes Del Plata pulp mill, the Ostrołęka light-weight container board machine – both progressing as planned – and most recently the combined heat and power plant investment at Zdírec. New innovations, like the nanotechnology-based MFC pulp, are also an important part of our future – a future where we aim at having more and more of our earnings depending on us and less and less on external uncontrollable factors. We continue to rethink and question the old ways of doing things and always search for better solutions.”

Stora Enso is continuing to implement its Wood Products Business Area’s strategy to improve profitability by constructing a new combined heat and power (CHP) plant at Zdírec Sawmill in the Czech Republic. The EUR 21 million investment will optimise energy production and usage at the mill by boosting its heat supply.

“Zdírec is one of our core sawmills including value-added engineering wood products, such as solid construction timber (KVH). It is in a competitive location, and this investment is a logical step in further upgrading the mill with sustainable energy sourcing. The production and sale of renewable energy to local electricity suppliers will also improve the mill’s profitability,” says Hannu Kasurinen, EVP, Stora Enso Wood Products.

The project will commence in the third quarter of 2011 and is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2013. The new CHP plant will utilise by-products from production as fuel, and when completed it will ensure 100% self-sufficiency for the mill in steam and electricity.

Stora Enso orders new testliner machine

In June 2011, Voith Paper received from Stora Enso the order for the supply of a new paper machine for the production of testliner. The location of the production line will be Ostroleka, approx. 120 km to the north of Warsaw, Poland. With its new PM 5 Stora Enso wants to meet the increasing demand for corrugated board and ensure the competitiveness of its location. The start-up is scheduled for the first quarter of 2013.

At a wire width of 8,600 mm and a design speed of 1,800 m/min, the Narew PM 5 will produce 455,000 metric tons of testliner per year. The new paper machine is especially designed for the production of lightweight testliner in a basis weight range of 65-140 g/m2. Storas Enso's focus of this investment was on low operating costs as well as a resource-efficient overall concept above all.

Voith Paper supplies the entire paper machine from headbox to winder. A particular highlight is the new DuoDryer CC which will be installed in the Narew PM 5 for the first time. It permits symmetrical drying with a continuously closed web run. Light and low-tension papers can be produced at high speed and efficiency with it. Furthermore, a VariFlex winder is included in the scope of supply.

In addition to the OnQ ModuleSteam (steam box) and the OnV ConditionMonitoring (machine monitoring system), the automation package also includes the new OnV EnergyProfiler software. It visualizes the energy consumption of the paper machine and thus permits energy cost saving production. A quality control system with two Voith LSC Scanners supplements the package.

stora_new1Stora Enso’s co-determination negotiations at Kopparfors Sawmill in Sweden have been concluded. On 22 March 2011 Stora Enso announced plans for permanent closure of Kopparfors Sawmill and the pellet mill by the end of 2011. The main reason for the planned closure has not changed: Kopparfors is loss-making with no significant prospect of improvement. Kopparfors Sawmill and the pellet mill will therefore be permanently closed down by the end of 2011.

“Now that the decision has been taken, we will strive to find individual options for every employee in close co-operation with the local community and authorities. This will take time, but our target is clear: to help every employee affected by the closure to find re-employment options. We will now also continue to look for other businesses to utilise the mill site. We have already had some contacts which we can now analyse further,” says Hannu Kasurinen, EVP, Stora Enso Wood Products.

Kopparfors Sawmill has an annual production capacity of 310 000 m3 of sawnwood. The pellet mill has an annual capacity of 160 000 tonnes. The sawmill and pellet mill have 110 employees.
