2018 09 14 081218This measure is inevitable and aimed to partially offset the continuous and extreme increase of raw material cost over the previous months.

Our experience of the past two years has shown that especially the pulp market remains very volatile and unpredictable. To protect the mutual interest of our customers and us we could offer longer price validities only when they are indexed on the market pulp price.

In addition to the cost increase in raw material, the energy market also expects a sharp price increase which will remain an additional challenge to our industry.

We would like to kindly emphasize and assure our customers and partners in the supply chain that we have taken all internal measures to optimise our cost and efficiency ensuring the lowest possible effect on our product pricing.

With the start up of the new film press at the Niklasdorf mill in Austria in November 2015, BRIGL & BERGMEISTER has completed the 3-phase investment programme, “Innovation One” launched in 2013. In 2013, the company already invested in a film press for the Vevče mill in Slovenia, thus ensuring both mills' future competitiveness.

Advantages of the film press

The newly installed film press replaces the conventional size press and offers numerous benefits. For example, the paper machine's speed is increased even further, while quality is improved and the product range is extended. The traditional range of one-side coated papers can now be produced with an even more selective and consistent surface quality. The new components of the plant are designed to allow for further increases in production capacity in the future.

Extension of the product portfolio

Spring 2014 saw investments in the headbox, which form the basis for a new future-oriented and innovative product portfolio. They allow Brigl & Bergmeister to offer a complete range of siliconizing base papers (called CCK – Clay Coated Kraft) under the brand name “NiklaSilico” within the sector of “Graphic Arts Applications”. With the new headbox, the maximum achievable grammage has been significantly increased to 137 g/m².

Customised embossing patterns

This year, investments in a third embossing calender were also made, in order to provide additional capacity for embossed speciality papers. Thus, B&B can also offer customised embossing patterns to the food & beverage industry.

Further reduction of the environmental impact

These investments also reflect B&B's motto “Think & Act Green”. Both the Niklasdorf and the Vevče mills already show industry-leading measures in terms of environmental protection. Thanks to the investments made, further energy savings will be achieved in the future by reducing the required steam and electricity consumption. Other resource-saving aspects, such as savings in particular production materials and increased machine efficiency, also contribute to accomplishing this aim.

The investments at both sites in recent years have increased the annual capacity of the B&B Group to 190,000 tonnes. B&B’s focus will remain on high-grade speciality papers for labels and flexible packaging for the consumer packaged goods industry.

voith logo 2013Brigl & Bergmeister GmbH in Niklasdorf, Austria, contracted with Voith for the delivery of a SpeedSizer applicator unit and a contactless dryer for the Niklasdorf PM 3. The startup of the rebuild is planned for summer 2015. The contract is the first step in a multi-stage development plan, with the goal of improving the quality and speed of the production line.

Because a broad range of wet-strength label papers are produced on the PM 3, there are a variety of demands on the applicator unit. The large number of different coating colors requires a high degree of flexibility in order to achieve excellent paper characteristics. SpeedSizer allows the targeted adjustment of the technical parameters to the individual specifications.

Along with the SpeedSizer, the delivery also includes a new CB-Turn for non-contact web turning, before it is dried using a space-saving combination of infrared heaters and downstream air hood. The high-performance, contactless dryer qDry Pro is especially energy-saving, because the air hood is heated exclusively from the hot exhaust air of the infrared heater.

The signing of the contract in mid-November capped off extensive and detailed project work, where the complete process was run on Voith pilot machines, consisting of SpeedSizer applicator unit, offline coating machine, and supercalender.

Brigl & Bergmeister chose Voith as a partner for this project, because Voith has many years of experience and the corresponding major expertise for specialty paper machines. Another factor is that the SpeedSizer applicator unit is one of the proven components in the Voith portfolio.

The Brigl & Bergmeister Group is part of the Roxcel Group, based in Vienna, and one of the leading manufacturers of label papers and flexible packaging papers.

Capacity increases at Brigl & Bergmeister

At their Niklasdorf mill, Brigl & Bergmeister are investing in a 5,000 ton capacity increase and higher energy efficiency.

b b logoB&B have ordered a new film press (SpeedSizer) from VOITH for their paper machine at the Niklasdorf mill, replacing the conventional size press. In addition, a non-contact energy-efficient compact infrared and air-drying combination (qDryPro) will be installed, and the steam and condensate systems as well as the air-handling system will be modified.

These investments will increase annual capacity in Niklasdorf by 5,000 tons, at reduced energy consumption. In addition to improvements in the quality of the existing product range, this will make it possible to develop innovative speciality papers. Installation is scheduled for September 2015, as an addition to the new headbox already installed in April 2014.

At the Vevče mill in Slovenia, too, modernisation and extension measures are being implemented, initiated in 2013 by installation of a film press.  Here, development focuses, among other things, on improvement of the barrier properties of flexible packaging papers.

Already today, wet-strength label papers in B&B quality can also be produced in Vevče. By expanding this segment at both mills, B&B seek to further expand their position as global market leaders in label papers for the beverage industry.

On 9 October, Brigl & Bergmeister withdrew its application to the German Federal Cartel Office for approval of the merger with the Uetersen paper mill.

b b logoIn May 2014, Brigl & Bergmeister GmbH signed an agreement for acquisition of the Uetersen speciality paper mill from the Stora Enso Group, subject to merger control approval.

Already in September, the German Federal Cartel Office (FCO) expressed reservations against the merger. Both parties subsequently submitted further conclusive market information and expert reports, none of which, however, managed to persuade the FCO to change its stance. Consequently, Brigl & Bergmeister withdrew the merger application on 9 October 2014.

The contracting parties have mutually agreed to cancel the share purchase agreement.

Brigl & Bergmeister regret the decision made by the FCO. The label market would have benefited substantially from the acquisition of the Uetersen paper mill. The merger would have created a strong group of speciality paper mills and provided positive impulses throughout the entire value chain.

At the two locations in Austria and Slovenia, Brigl & Bergmeister manufacture wet-strength and non-wet strength label papers as well as flexible packaging papers.

b b logoBrigl & Bergmeister, producer of 1-side coated paper for labels and flexible packaging has signed a cooperation agreement with Cham Paper Group. Once base paper production at the facility in Cham, Switzerland, has been shut down, B&B in Niklasdorf, Austria, will take over the production and marketing of their silicone base papers (Clay Coated Kraft paper). Cham will provide its highly specialized technical expertise. The first products will be available during the second half of 2013, giving the Niklasdorf plant an additional pillar to its successful, wet strength label papers. Following this, there are plans to make further investments in expanding capacity at Niklasdorf in 2014.

In September 2013, the PM5 in Vevce, Slovenia, will receive a new film press which will increase capacity by 20,000 tonnes. It will become possible to develop new products in the label paper and flexible packaging range thanks to an improved pre-coating process.

2012 was a successful year for Brigl & Bergmeister. The volume of sales increased by 5 % to 155,000 tonnes compared with the previous year, meaning that both plants in Niklasdorf and Vevce were running at full capacity. By acquiring the waste incineration plant ENAGES, B&B in Niklasdorf also has increased its independence from the volatile energy market and improved its carbon footprint.
