Brigl & Bergmeister Makes Major Investment

Brigl & Bergmeister is investing in a new Andritz film press for its site in Vevče, Slovenia.

On 11 October 2012 Brigl & Bergmeister commissioned Austrian company Andritz to build a film press for the PM5 at Papirnica Vevče in Vevče (near Ljubljana).

Brigl & Bergmeister – one of the world's leading producers of special papers for labels and flexible packaging – will thus increase annual capacity at the Vevče site by 20,000 tonnes, to 110,000 tonnes p.a. Moreover, by increasing and improving the initial coat in the paper machine, it will be possible to enhance product quality even further and offer new, innovative solutions for the packaging industry.

This is Brigl & Bergmeister's second major investment since it was acquired by paper trading group Roxcel last year. The first major investment was its acquisition of the ENAGES thermal energy recovery plant, which supplies power to Brigl & Bergmeister's site in Niklasdorf, Austria.

The plant belonging to Energie- und Abfallverwertungs Ges.m.b.H. (ENAGES) was constructed on the B&B site in 2002. As ENAGES’ energy purchaser, it was natural for B&B to secure its long-term energy supply by this acquisition.

The purchase contract was signed between Energie Steiermark AG and Brigl & Bergmeister GmbH (B&B) on 23 March. 250 enages

B&B gains the asset of an assured energy supply, and benefits from a sustainable improvement in its environmental performance. The minimal "carbon footprint" compared to the gas turbines normally used will in future become an even more important sales argument for paper.

As the only thermal energy recovery plant in Styria, ENAGES will remain a reliable waste disposal partner for companies and local authorities, and continue to make a valuable ecological contribution to the province.

After the takeover by ROXCEL Handelsges.m.b.H. only last year, this step means a further strengthening of the B&B location in Niklasdorf with 250 employees. B&B is a global market leader for label paper and paper for flexible packaging, with its factories in Niklasdorf and Vevce in Slovenia.

For Energie Steiermark, the sale of ENAGES underlines its systematic drive to focus on its core business in the field of energy. The acquisition of ENAGES by the highest bidder B&B as its main direct energy customer is considered the best option for securing the medium-term future of ENAGES from the regional policy point of view.

The seller and buyer have agreed to treat the purchase price as confidential. The transaction still requires merger control authority approval.

The Vienna-based multinational paper trading company ROXCEL Group has today signed an agreement to purchase the paper manufacturer Brigl & Bergmeister and Vevce from the Prinzhorn Group, taking over complete ownership.

Brigl & Bergmeister runs two production facilities in Niklasdorf/Austria and Vevče/Slovenia which produce an aggregate of 165.000 tons of paper per year with 500 employees. Brigl & Bergmeister is the world market leader and specialist manufacturer for label paper with an export share of 95%.

With aggregate sales of EUR 729 Mio./USD 1.033 Mio in 2010, the ROXCEL Group is one of the world’s largest paper and paper board trading companies. ROXCEL is based in Vienna and operates through a global network of sales offices in more than 100 countries. With the acquisition of Brigl & Bergmeister, ROXCEL is entering the field of paper manufacturing for the first time in its history. The production arm will operate separately from Roxcel’s trading division.

With highly qualified, motivated employees and a strong Brigl & Bergmeister and Papirnica Vevče management team, Roxcel aims to further strengthen its pre-existing excellent business relationships in the print and packaging industry through innovative and ecologically sustainable products and to further improve the supply chain.

The transaction is subject to merger control approval from the Monopolies and Mergers Commission. All parties concerned have agreed to treat the purchase price as confidential.
