Last Friday, Kelheim Fibres hosted the district group meeting for the Bavarian branches of Zellcheming and VPM (Paper Association Munich).

This year’s meeting was all about speciality papers: the presentations by members concentrated on different aspects of that topic - and Dr. Frank Miletzky, chairman of Papiertechnische Stiftung, ventured a look at the future of paper. New materials or combinations of materials, new production techniques and last but not least new, demanding applications are considered to be the future challenges for the paper industry - as well as its future opportunities.

The day’s highlight for the more than 30 visitors was the plant tour of Kelheim’s viscose fibre production and in particular the demonstration of the in-house paper competence centre. Kelheim Fibres, manufacturer of viscose speciality fibres for - amongst others - paper applications, operates a pilot plant with inclined wire technology.

This plant serves Kelheim’s R&D team, yet at the same time it offers a unique service for Kelheim’s customers from the paper industry. Here, smaller amounts of new papers can be produced and tested, without disturbing the customer’s regular production flow.

As Walter Roggenstein, head of Kelheim’s R&D, together with his team presented the pilot plant in action, the advantages of viscose fibers in papers became clear: viscose fibres enhance the physical properties of papers, such as a paper’s strength, and can lend the paper product additional functionalities.

In the course of ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2011, 236 exhibitors from 19 countries presented their products and services over 7,800 square metres of exhibition floor space.

Due to the ongoing difficult economic situation in some areas of the industry, a moderate decline of around 6 percent was posted both in attendance by exhibitors and in floor space booked. With a share of 36 percent it was possible to match the previous year’s level of foreign visitors.

2,715 professionals visited the event over the three days. This represents a drop of about 14 percent compared with 2010. The share of foreign visitors continues to remain steady at over 24 percent.

Once again, current issues and topics concerning future perspectives were addressed in the programme of lectures and formed the subject of intense discussions. The traditional ZELLCHEMING summer evening function as well as the VDMA evening and the Finnish reception rounded off the event.

Overall, ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2011 was characterised by an optimistic mood among exhibitors and visitors alike. The event thus illustrated its important role in the pulp and paper industry once again.

Thanks to the search function for exhibitors and products on the www.zellcheming-expo.de website, it is possible to investigate groups of products and find the contact details of this year’s exhibitors even after ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2011.

With the shift in the predominant markets and as a result of the financial and economic crisis, there have been many discussions about ZELLCHEMING-Expo over the past few years. After careful consideration, the ZELLCHEMING e.V. association has decided to continue holding the ZELLCHEMING-Expo annually in conjunction with the annual general meeting of the association.

252 exhibitors from 18 countries presented their products and services on an area of about 8,000 square metres. Despite of the tense economic situation, the exhibitor participation as well as the total stand space declined only of about 12 percent which is less than predicted before. With 36 percent, the number of foreign exhibitors achieved nearly the level of the previous year.

3,114 visitors attended the event on three days. In comparison to 2009, this is a positive growth of 5 percent. The number of foreign visitors remained by over 24 percent.

The lectures programme dealt with current and trend-setting topics offering the opportunity to intensive discussions. The event was completed by the traditional ZELLCHEMING Summer Evening as well as by the VDMA and Finland Reception.

ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2010 underlined again their high status within the pulp and paper industry.

The online exhibitor list on www.zellcheming-expo.de still provides a search for products and contact data of this year’s exhibitors.

Next year’s ZELLCHEMING-Expo, the leading yearly event of the pulp and paper industry in Europe, takes place from 28 to 30 June 2011 in Wiesbaden.
