On April 23rd, 2010, judges at the 7th All-Russian Forest Lesprom Awards in Moscow named STEP “The Russian Pulp and Paper industry’s investment project of the year”. Mondi Syktyvkar also won the mill award for “The pulp and paper industry’s most dynamically developing company”.

Syktyvkar, Komi Republic of Russia, May 27th, 2010 –  Mondi Syktyvkar launched the STEP project in July 2008 as the most immense mill upgrade in the mill’s 40-year history. Having been official named the investment project of the year at this year’s Lesprom Awards, the STEP project has achieved many of its main targets:

·         To replace obsolete technologies

·         To make the mill even safer for the health of employees

·         To make the mill more environmentally friendly

·         To increase the quality and competitiveness of the products

In reference to Mondi Syktyvkar’s awards, Gerhard Kornfeld CEO of Mondi Syktyvkar said, “The mill staff is very committed to our overall operations. This attitude has also contributed to the productivity at the mill and Mondi Syktyvkar receiving this award for dynamic development.  Major financial volumes and energy went into the STEP project – it is a very important award for us and it confirms Mondi Group’s position as one of the most prominent companies in the Russian Pulp and Paper Industry.”

Despite the preceding year’s difficult financial climate, which affected the industry as a whole, the STEP project continued forward and managed to set new productivity records in January 2010. The Lesprom award jury evaluated Mondi Syktyvkar’s achievements based on financial indicators, dynamics of profitability, and optimization processes.

Lesprom Network, the information and trading system, first founded the awards in 2002 to credit those members of the forest business community for their significant developments and investments in the Forest Complex of Russia. Alexey Savinov, head of the Federal Forest Agency, chaired this year’s jury. Major Russian and international forest companies, as well as Russian government representatives attended the award ceremony.
