evg logoEV Group Oy (EVG) contributed to an improved tail threading process at the Sappi Somerset mill’s paper machine 2 (PM2) in Skowhegan, Maine. Bottlenecks in the PM2 tail threading process have been efficiently eliminated by installing a system for the transfer of the tail into the ropes in the single felted area of the machine. The delivery included the Gap, Stop, Cut and Transfer blow Technology, supported by a tail threading vacuum zone being drilled to one dryer cylinder on site. The rope pulleys were also relocated, adjusted to the new technology being installed.

Additionally,  the dryer section improvement supporting edge nozzles was installed in the press section to prevent harmful sheet edge flutter after the suction transfer roll.

The total delivery of the rebuild was supported by EVG Engineers, who supervised both the installation and start-up. After the PM2 improvements, tail threading into the ropes became more efficient and reduced the overall time needed for threading. The original project targets for threading were clearly achieved!

Sappi Nijmegen, PM 7 in Netherlands has ordered press and dryer section modification by EV Group

The project includes stabilizing technology, tail threading equipment and machine geometry updates for the press section.

In the single felted section, the 1st and the 2nd dryer will be optimized with EV EasyOne high release web stabilizers and with new air systems, felt rolls and stretchers. In EV EasyOne concept, three high release web stabilizers will be installed above the existing dryers, which will be drilled for vacuum rolls on site.

The drying section optimization also includes EVdf Web Stabilizers and air equipment for the 3rd dryer group.

2011-06-29_092539EV Group has delivered stabilizing technology to Bolloré Thin Papers Léman mill, PM 4 in France.

The delivery included EVp Web Stabilizer for the press section and 2 pcs of EVsf2 Web Stabilizers for the first single felted group.

PM 4 produces cigarette paper and fine paper, light grades 14 - 60 g/m2 at speed of 650 m/min and the width of the PM is 3,2 m.

Mr. Stéphane Barbereau, Industry Director of Bolloré Thin Papers:

“I am very satisfied with the installation of the EV Web Stabilizers. After their installation we never had any sheet fluttering problems even though we produce ultra thin papers as low as 14 g/m2. EV Web Stabilizers do not need particular attention and they are very easy to use.

I appreciate the professional work of EVG personnel as well as the quality and solidity of their equipment.”

Before ventilation rebuild, Dalum PM 7 suffered from several problems. Firstly, the hood humidity level was very high. Condensation in the hood caused corrosion in the drying section and hood constructions, and falling water drops led to paper defects.

Secondly, the pocket humidities were very high, which was causing uneven moisture profiles, poor evaporation and loss of drying capacity.

All these ventilation problems resulted in massive heating energy and production losses.

The ventilation project included modern heat recovery, hood exhaust units, condensate and steam coils, supply air fans, pocket ventilation technology and web stabilizing technology. Survey services for the PM 7 problems analysis and action plan as well as all different project phases were performed by EVG.

“Now 65% of the PM7 heating energy is recovered for district heating and hood supply air year round. Also the PM 7 speed has increased by about 20%. Our project was the biggest governmental energy saving project of Denmark in 2010.” (Mr. Claus Christiansen, Production Manager, Arjowiggins Dalum, PM7)

Poor runnability at Stora Enso Anjala PM2 (bookpaper) drying section created problems in higher machine speeds. In the double felted section sheet fluttering caused wrinkles. In single felted section it was impossible to increase the speed, because the web did not release nicely from contact and followed the upper cylinder surface.

The PM2 drying section runnability was optimized in two steps. In 2009, runnability problems of the double felted section were eliminated with machine geometry modification and stabilizing technology tailored for the area. In the second step, in 2010, runnability of the single felted section was optimized with the EV EasyOne technology / high vacuum stabilizing technology.

”The problems because of poor runnability are eliminated after the web stabilizing projects in single and double felted sections. We have now more stable sheet run, and the drying section runnability enables also higher speed.” (Mr. Antti Outinen, Production Manager, Stora Enso Anjala PM2)

Does your web run easily at the beginning of your drying section, at the first single felted groups?
Do you have sheet flutter and paper defects?
Does tail threading take too much time?

Especially in high-speed paper machines, the first single felted drying groups are very sensitive to run. Without support on web release between upper cylinder and vacuum roll the wet web tends to follow the upper cylinder, resulting in breaks and paper defects.

EV EasyOne™ optimizes the web release between upper cylinder and vacuum roll. It eliminates runnability problems that are caused when the sensitive wet web tends to follow the upper cylinder surface.

Traditionally, draw difference between press and drying section has been a tool to control runnability but this often causes problems in paper quality. With the EV EasyOne it is possible to improve the web release effectively with a special high vacuum area. This optimizes both drying section runnability and draws to improve paper quality.

EV EasyOne technology includes a special high vacuum area. This prevents web from following the upper cylinder and resulting in breaks and paper defects.
EV EasyOne technology is typically combined with the EV EasyGo concept combining web stabiling and vacuum roll technologies.

  • EV EasyOne ensures:
  • Excellent runnability of the first single felted drying groups
  • Eliminates sheet flutter and paper defects
  • Additional PM speed
  • More tolerance to process fluctuations
  • Reduction of raw material costs

Stora Enso Anjala PM 2 has ordered EV EasyOne™ runnability components and services to improve runnability at the 1st and the 2nd drying sections.
