Mondi, global leader in packaging and paper, has commissioned a crude tall oil plant (CTO-plant) at its Syktyvkar pulp and paper mill. The new equipment allows processing of all sulphate soap generated as a by-product of the pulp production process in the mill. As a result of this investment, the mill will be able to produce up to around 40,000 tonnes of crude tall oil annually.

  • New plant will help to manage the increased production capacity of Mondi´s Syktyvkar mill
  • Project will produce around 40,000 tonnes of crude tall oil annually with a focus to be sold to the petrochemical, road construction, paint and coating sector

marketingei others logo 8795The new CTO-plant produces softwood and hardwood tall oil obtained through sulphuric acid treatment of sulphate soap which is a by-product of the pulp cooking process. Softwood tall oil is used at Mondi Syktyvkar to mitigate pitch deposits at the digesters, while hardwood tall oil is sold to external companies dealing in petrochemical, road construction, paint and coating. In recent years, tall oil has been intensively used for biodiesel fuel production primarily in Scandinavian countries.

The state-of-the-art equipment allows for automation and online control of almost all parameters of the process and makes it possible to perform continuous production of tall oil.

“The CTO-plant was built as part of the Horizon strategic investment programme aiming at eliminating bottlenecks in pulp and paper production processes, as well as responding to the mill’s increased production capacity. Processing of by-products of the pulp production process has become one of the outcomes of the roadmap as the old plant could no longer manage growing pulp production volumes“, said Klaus Peller, Managing Director of Mondi Syktyvkar.

To properly maintain the new CTO-plant the staff have undergone specialist training. To further leverage the production potential of the new CTO-plant, additional equipment will be commissioned including a 600 m3 sulphate soap storage tank, a dispatch unit with a new bridge to load oil into rail tank cars and tank trucks as well as an additional storage tank to ensure the necessary stock of tall oil. Works for these projects are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2020.

The official ceremony was attended by representatives of Komi Republic Government and Mondi leaders. The estimated 150 visitors of the event included customers, partners and contractors who had been involved in the project implementation, as well as members of the project team and journalists from the Russian trade press and local media representatives.

“We are proud of Mondi Syktyvkar’s 45 year heritage in the Komi Republic of Russia. Our new pulp dryer project illustrates Mondi’s continued commitment to ensuring the success of the mill for years to come,” concluded Peter Orisich, CEO of Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper, at yesterday’s event.

“Our mill keeps progressing and mastering new business activities, as demonstrated by this most recent investment into the installation of the new pulp dryer. This project also creates employment for about 30 people in the mill,” said Klaus Peller, Mondi Syktyvkar Managing Director, at the opening ceremony.

Guests of the event were invited for a mill tour, including an opportunity to visit the wood yard, paper production, and the finishing line. Following the tour, representatives of Mondi’s top management and Komi regional government cut a red ribbon in front of the pulp dryer to symbolise the launch of the new machine. All the guests received samples of Mondi Syktyvkar’s new ‘KOMICELL’ product, which is an FSC® certified market pulp that is produced without the use of elemental chlorine (ECF).

2014-10-10 121253The €30 million large-scale pulp dryer project for the production of softwood market pulp at Mondi Group’s Syktyvkar mill is nearing completion.  Mondi Syktyvkar celebrated its 45th anniversary this year and the investment demonstrates Mondi’s continued commitment to the operation. “We are proud of our mill’s heritage, community relations and continued achievements”, explains Peter Orisich, CEO of Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper.

“The new pulp dryer will allow us to produce more than 100,000 tonnes of FSC® certified softwood market pulp per year”, says Klaus Peller, Mondi Syktyvkar Managing Director. “The project has been successfully managed by a professional team and we’re set to officially mark the opening of the pulp dryer on 19 November 2014 as planned”, explains Klaus Peller, Managing Director, Mondi Syktyvkar.

The foundation works for the pulp dryer and auxiliary equipment were finished late May 2014, while the roof and ventilation were completed this summer. In the final phase, the drying section, tanks, pipelines, electrical and automation equipment were installed during September.

The pulp dryer allows Mondi Syktyvkar to produce a new bleached softwood market pulp called KOMICELL, which is FSC® certified and produced without elemental chlorine (ECF). “This FSC® chain of custody certified product is ideally suited to meet the needs of our national and international packaging, tissue, and newsprint industry customers. Together with our proven supply chain capabilities, we are looking forward to fulfilling our customer requests – on time and in full”, said Igor Naumov, Mondi Syktyvkar Market Pulp Sales Manager.

Softwood pulp is the most valuable fiber material in paper production. It mainly consists of long fibers that can be used with short-fibered materials (mechanical, hardwood, straw and cane pulp) in paper production and can also be used on its own. First deliveries of KOMICELL are planned for this year.

The company will promote the new design with a Russia-wide campaign from March to May 2013 to introduce the new packaging to end users, dealers and distributors at all levels.
Russia’s office paper market will soon see a new look to a familiar brand. Mondi Syktyvkar has launched a new packaging design for its popular domestic brand Snegurochka.

Snegurochka paper optSnegurochka is Russia’s leading office paper brand recognised for its high whiteness level, smooth surface, good opacity for double sided printing and excellent printer runnability. It is also the first Russian-produced FSC® certified paper.

“Snegurochka’s new packing design reflects the paper’s high-quality profile and strong position in the Russian market. It’s an up-to-date design that clearly displays Snegurochka’s environmental labels, grammage, format and key details that our customers look for,” said Alexey Shamin, Head of Sales for Russia & CIS, Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper.

The Snegurochka brand was first developed at Mondi Syktyvkar in 1999. The new packaging preserves the brand’s well-known packaging features, such as the recognizable color scheme and Cyrillic brand name, though it is now written in a more contemporary style. The paper’s technical characteristics will also remain in CIS languages. Among the changes to the packaging design, the brand’s environmental profile will feature more prominently.

In addition to being FSC® certified and part of Mondi’s Green Range, Snegurochka was awarded the EU Ecolabel in 2012. Products and services bearing the EU Ecolabel are certified as having a lower impact on the environment than other products in the same product group. It is a means by which customers choose products deemed environmentally conscious based on core environmental parameters.

Moreover, Snegurochka received a rating of “good” on the WWF Check Your Paper environmental benchmarking tool -- a voluntary initiative which encourages transparency regarding environmental performance in the paper industry and identifies sustainably produced papers on a global scale.

All Mondi branded paper are part of the Green Range and are FSC® or PECF certified, totally chlorine free bleached (TCF) or 100% recycled. More information about Snegurochka and Mondi Syktyvkar is available at www.mondigroup.com/syktyvkar

Produced at Mondi Syktyvkar mill, the company’s well-known office and offset brands Snegurochka, IQ economy, IQ allround, MAESTRO® standard, MAESTRO® special, and MAESTRO® PRINT (offset) are now EU Ecolabel certified

maestro iqMondi Syktyvkar in Komi, Russia was recently awarded the EU Ecolabel for all papers produced at the mill. The EU Ecolabel is a certificate issued by the European Union, which verifies the environmental profile of a product or service. Products and services bearing the EU Ecolabel are certified as having a lower impact on the environment than other products in the same product group. The EU Ecolabel is a purely voluntary scheme enacted to encourage the purchasing of green products and services. It is a means by which customers choose products deemed environmentally conscious based on core environmental parameters.

The main criteria examined by the EU Ecolabel are emissions to air and water, energy use, sustainable forest management, the presence of hazardous chemical substances, waste management, information on packaging, fitness-for use/performance, and information provided about the EU Ecolabel. Specific for paper products, the EU Ecolabel stipulates the use of recycled fibres or virgin fibres from sustainably managed forests.

“Our office and offset papers produced at Mondi Syktyvkar fulfil the demands of the domestic market, where the environmental paper profile is increasingly important and adds value to the product. Snegurochka is recognised as Russia’s number one selling office paper. It now bears the EU Ecolabel in addition to being FSC® certified and part of Mondi’s eco-conscious Green Range,” said Klaus Peller, CEO Mondi Syktyvkar mill.

This year, Mondi succeeded in including all Mondi branded uncoated fine papers in its Green Range. Green Range papers must be FSC or PEFC™ certified, 100% recycled, or totally chlorine free bleached (TCF). Mondi maintains a strong position on sustainable forestry having attained FSC certification for all Mondi owned or leased forests. Moreover, 61% of the company’s total wood supply is FSC (46%) or PEFC (15%) certified; the remainder meets the FSC Controlled Wood Standard, which ensures legal compliance and no deforestation.

Earlier this year, Mondi Syktyvkar won three awards at the 2012 All Russian Awards for Environmental Safety and Ecological Management: nature preservation, technology (BAT), and ecological management. Most recently, Mondi received two WWF Environmental Paper Awards for “Transparency”, having listed 92% of its branded uncoated fine papers on WWF's Check Your Paper database, and “Best Environmental Performance Paper Brands” for 100% recycled NAUTILUS® SuperWhite. Mondi Group was also the recipient of the 2012 PPI Award (Pulp and Paper International) for Environmental Strategy of the Year in the company category.

To communicate Mondi’s achievements in a fun and entertaining manner, the company has launched a Green Range trivia game. For every participant, Mondi donates one euro to the NGO OroVerde’s reforestation project “Guatemala – Tree for Tree”. Participants also have a chance to win eco-friendly prizes. The project aims to keep Mondi’s Syktyvkar forestry operations in the leading position in the Russian forest industry

August 17, 2011 - Last month Mondi Syktyvkar launched the large-scale Forest of the Future project to further strengthen its forestry operations. The program is scheduled to close in 2013.

"The aim of the project is to bring our timber business to the next level by increasing the efficiency and profitability of our forestry operations," said Mondi Syktyvkar Managing Director Gerhard Kornfeld. According to Mr. Kornfeld, the Forest of the Future project will further the achievements made in mill’s sustainable forestry operations during the past three years and create a single competitive and balanced system that follows a distinctive strategy.
