Kruger Corner Brook: Unions accept wage deferral

All eight of the unions at Corner Brook Pulp and Paper have voted to agree to a wage deferral request from Kruger Inc., The Western Star reports.

The seven unions represented by the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers (CEP) Union of Canada as well as Lodge 1567 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, voted on the proposal from Kruger. According to the newspaper, Kruger asked the unions to take a 10% cut in pay, which could be paid back to the workers if the mill can improve its bottom line.

The company, according to the agreement, will commit to repaying the lost wages "as soon as Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited returns to profitability (pre-tax profit) and has recovered the accumulated losses since Jan. 1, 2010." The Western Star also states that Kruger is committing to allowing the unions access to the necessary financial information, on a quarterly basis, so the unions can better comprehend and evaluate the profitability of the Corner Brook mill.

Stora Enso's and Arauco's joint-venture

storaensoStora Enso's and Arauco's joint-venture company in Uruguay, Montes del Plata, has decided to initiate a feasibility study on Punta Pereira as the site for a possible future pulp mill. Punta Pereira was also the site chosen for Spanish pulp maker ENCE's planned pulp mill. Stora Enso and Arauco acquired the majority of ENCE's operations in Uruguay in October 2009.

Studies prepared by Montes del Plata show that Punta Pereira, in the Department of Colonia, is a promising location for the possible pulp mill and therefore more detailed economic, technical, environmental and social studies are justified. Punta Pereira also offers flexibility in terms of planning of a long-term investment.

“We have come out with a decision which is based on our preliminary economic, operational and environmental findings. The identification of Punta Pereira will allow us to proceed to the next phase - a detailed feasibility study,” says Stora Enso CEO Jouko Karvinen.

The final decision on construction of the new pulp mill will be taken by the Boards of Directors of Stora Enso, Arauco and Montes del Plata once the feasibility study is completed.

The continued strength of the Australian dollar and the increase in the size and competitiveness of manufacturers elsewhere in the world is making it more difficult for Australian manufacturers in both domestic and export markets, according to the Australian Plantation Products and Paper Industry Council (AP3).

The Council outlines that the recent decision by PaperlinX to close its Wesley Vale pulp and paper mill and part of the Burnie facility is yet another confirmation of the major challenges facing Australian manufacturing.

Richard Stanton, CEO of A3P says, "The resources boom is providing huge benefits for the Australian economy as a whole and certain sectors and regions in particular. However, the boom is also having negative consequences for manufacturing and for those regions and communities that do not have large endowments of key natural resources."

He continues, "Australian pulp and paper manufacturers are competing against producers who receive a range of subsidies and benefits including free or cheap finance, generous renewable energy and fuel subsidies, and lower regulatory standards for environmental protection and employment conditions."

The Australian pulp and paper industry produces some $9bn of finished product each year including newsprint, packaging, printing, writing and industrial papers along with tissue and other sanitary products, according to the Council.

The A3P continues that the vast majority of these products are sold in the domestic market and in New Zealand, but these markets are increasingly being targeted by low cost producers in countries such as China and Indonesia. Australia must maintain a strong anti-dumping system to ensure Australian manufacturing is not unfairly disadvantaged, the Council states.

Also according to the A3p, the Australian pulp and paper industry does have a number of competitive advantages including;

* High quality, reasonably priced, sustainably managed fibre supply (wood and recovered paper);

* Competitively priced energy and an ability to increase renewable energy production from biomass;

* Skilled labour

* Stable business and regulatory environments

The council outlines that the pulp and paper manufacturing facilities require continuous large scale capital investment to remain competitive. Some $2bn has been invested in the industry in Australia in the past five years but even this investment is not enough to maintain the capacity of the industry and its ability to compete internationally.

Stanton also says, "The announcement by PaperlinX is sad news for the company's employees, contractors and suppliers and the communities concerned. These mills have made a substantial contribution to the Tasmanian and Australian economies over many decades."

ENESSCO S 1000 is an advanced Production Enhancement technology that maximizes Paper Machine and Converting production efficiencies. ENESSCO S 1000 is a worldwide patented blend of surfactants and inorganic chemicals. This technology effectively modifies surface-active forces between the Fiber and the Wax & Stickies adhering to the fiber. Stickies & Wax are effectively liberated from usable fiber.

Product Fact Sheet:

* Patented Technology Effectively Releases and Stabilizes Contaminants, Liberating Fiber
* Substantial Yield Increases due to Improved Screening and Cleaning Efficiency
* Improved Stickies & Wax Removal resulting in Higher Quality Furnish
* Control of Process Water "Micro Stickies" improves Paper Machine & Converting productivity
* Low Cost control of Wire, Felt, and Dryer Fabric deposition
* Removal of Wax/Contaminants results in improved Sheet Appearance, Strength and Slide Angle
* FDA Approved, Non-Hazardous/Non-Toxic, Environmentally friendly!

ENESSCO S 1000 treated contaminants are more efficiently removed by mechanical screens, centri-cleaners, and water clarification equipment. This results in reduced levels of Macro/Micro stickies and wax in the processed pulp. Surface passivation of remaining contaminants inhibits system wide deposition.

ENESSCO S 1000's reduction and control of contaminates leads to cleaner forming sections, press felts and dryer section fabrics. Stock Preparation yield improves substantially as screening and cleaning unit operations are able to disseminate valuable fiber from contaminants more efficiently. Greater production efficiencies, improve quality and reduced downtime are the primary benefits of this unique patented technology.

Wax removal by ENESSCO S 1000 results in significant sheet quality, slide angle and strength test improvements. Cost savings are realized through the increase in premium production, cull reduction & reduction of chemicals.

The use of eliminating Thermal Dispersers will greatly reduce the overall cost of mill operations and not only save steam but energy.

Use of a lesser grade of furnish such as DLK and still meeting all specifications will provide mills paybacks of up to 3 : 1

Application:
Brown Grades, News Print:
Reduce stickies
Eliminate Wax spots
Increase production up to 8%
Eliminate Machine Deposition
Eliminate the need for Thermal Disperser
Improve white water quality
Reduce overall mill energy cost

The proper dosage rate for ENESSCO S 1000 depends on quality of recycled furnish and final pulp specifications. A normal feedrate is 0.7-0.9 dry lbs. per ton of recycled fiber at the repulper. Product is delivered in dry or liquid form and can be packaged in repulpable bags sized for batch applications. Continuos operations typically use liquid product.
