Voith announces the sale of the 100th HydroSeal sealing strip system for . Another step up the ladder of success for the sealing strip system after the State of Baden-Württemberg had awarded Voith with its Environmental Technology Prize for the HydroSeal in July.

HydroSeal is a sealing strip system with an integrated lubrication water feed for paper machine suction rolls. Since it was launched on the market, the HydroSeal has been used successfully in all suction roll types and for the production of all paper grades. “An important success factor is without doubt the fact that the patented design meets the ever-growing demand for resource-conserving production with low water and energy use. In both these respects, the HydroSeal has meanwhile demonstrated its effectiveness worldwide," says Jochen Honold, Global Product Manager Mechanical Roll Service at Voith Paper.

The benefit to the environment is immense: the rebuild of just a single suction roll achieves savings of up to 20,000 m³ fresh water and waste water per year. This volume is equivalent to the contents of around eight Olympic swimming pools. The energy savings possible with HydroSeal are also considerable: up to 1 million kWh per year.

North America – the expansion of the Kentville, Canada forming fabric plant to manufacture woven dryer fabrics in North America for the first time in over a decade. The existing sales force can now leverage relationships in complementary products to accelerate penetration in this currently underserved market. The commissioning of this newly expanded facility and the installed assets was completed in Q3 2015.

South America – the renovation and expansion of the Piracicaba, Brazil plant to manufacture spiral dryer fabrics. Xerium previously manufactured spiral dryer fabrics at its smaller and higher cost Argentina plant. Upon closure of this facility, Xerium made the strategic decision to purchase all new production equipment and modernize its product technology. This initiative, the largest of the four, will enable Xerium to offer both higher quality products and shorter lead times, while operating under a significantly more advantageous cost structure and was fully operational in Q3 2015.

Europe – the expansion of the Gloggnitz, Austria plant to produce belts and fabrics for nonwoven fabrics machines. Xerium has installed special-purpose machines, which will more than double its global capacity for its nonwoven products portfolio. Concurrent with this expansion, Xerium enhanced its product technology to deliver higher levels of performance on the most modern nonwoven production lines and will provide global support for a variety of product types from this site. This expansion further leverages one of Xerium’s most cost competitive and high quality facilities. The expansion is on schedule to reach its full production rate capability by year-end 2015.

Asia – the expansion of the Asahi, Japan plant to produce Xerium’s most advanced forming fabrics for containerboard machines. Xerium has historically manufactured machine clothing for large containerboard machines in its European plants and shipped them to Asia. This investment enables Xerium to serve the Japanese and the entire Asian markets locally with shorter lead times, significantly lower shipping costs to the customer while delivering Xerium’s most modern product portfolio. The commissioning is underway and remains on schedule to reach its full production rate capability by year-end 2015.

    The market launch of Voith’s UniFilm and UniSize, two rubber roll covers for film and size presses, is the start of a new product series. The wish to offer economic benefits to papermakers played an important role in the development of the Uni series. For example, the development goal for the UniFilm roll cover was to substantially extend the metering rod service life.

    Voith developed the UniFilm rubber roll cover for use in film presses, while UniSize was specially optimized for the requirements of puddle size presses. Both roll covers feature a new polymer matrix and new base layer structure that ensures maximum bonding to the roll core. Another new feature is the integration of an innovative filler system that creates the very uniform and stable surface roughness that is crucial to achieving a high-quality coating.

The new UniFilm cover for applicator rolls impresses with its high abrasion resistance and longer metering rod service life thanks to micro-lubrication. Extensive trials and test series in European paper mills have provided proof that metering rod service life is actually extended thanks to UniFilm. Savings can be up to EUR 50,000 per year.

      2015 09 21 114058According to a survey made by Bain & Co, the pulp and paper (P&P) industry has been a forerunner in maintenance outsourcing. Pulp-PaperWorld.com sat down with Pertti Weissenfelt, Pulp and Paper Industry Segment Manager for Quant to get an insight into why this industry has outsourced more maintenance than any other industry.

      Has the P&P industry been under harder cost pressure than other industries?

      They are today, especially printing paper production where the demand is declining all the time because of the digitalization that has had huge defect on printing paper consumption. Paper producers are looking for all possible ways to cut costs and ensure their own competitiveness in the market where prices have been declining for years.

      Board and pulp producers are in a lot better market situation and basically they can sell what they are able to produce. For them, the most important thing than pure cost cutting is the reliability of the machinery to ensure the highest possible production efficiency – without forgetting the maintenance costs.

      So one main driver for maintenance outsourcing in the P&P Industry has certainly been due to cost cutting. This is especially in Europe and US, while in some other regions the main driver has been the need to keep and improve maintenance capabilities and expertise.

      Are P&P industry maintenance organizations more traditional when needing a culture change?

      This is the main reason in many cases for maintenance outsourcing in every industry. Outsourced maintenance is driven as a business, which makes it vital for everyone to always consider the most efficient way of their own work. Furthermore, continuously develop it to be able to guarantee the most cost efficient solution to the customer and stay competitive in the market.

      Does outsourcing maintenance give more flexibility than having it in-house?

      This has always been important in the P&P industry. This is because the need for maintenance resources varies a lot for a longer period of time. For example, a pulp mill shut (normally between every 12-18 months) requires a lot more resources compared to the production phase. Secondly, due to a weak market (like now), when paper machines need to be occasionally stopped temporarily for days or even weeks due to lack of orders, the machines don’t need any maintenance. Both these situations are easier for the customers to outsource this maintenance cost, which guarantees better flexibility for resource allocations.

      Do P&P mills contain more complex technology than other industries?

      Today the P&P mills are highly automated and that has caused quite a big reduction of people working at mills. For example, the European P&P Industry had 420 000 employees in 1992. However in 2014, the amount was 180 000. Production at the same time has increased from 65Mt to 90Mt.

      This result creates a higher automation rate, making machinery and maintaining them more complex, which requires an in-depth knowledge and skill base from the maintenance team. P&P mills don’t have many employees anymore. All of them have their own expertise, therefore they support the increasing development of maintenance outsourcing to companies who have a wide enough customer base to keep all needed resources. Pulp and paper production processes are already by themselves, complex enough to be managed. By outsourcing maintenance, the production organization can concentrate 100% on their own core, pulp and paper production.

      Do P&P Industry customers get more benefit out of outsourcing than other industries?

      It is maybe easier in the P&P industry to define the full potential that exists in maintenance than in some other industry. This is because paper machines are quite similar for each different paper and board grades. Regardless of the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) who has made the machine, the machines have been like that for decades. This similarity makes them easier to compare.

      Usually P&P companies are comparing their own machines to identify the ones that perform and the ones that don’t. Quite often, company targets are set based on their top sites. That still doesn’t demonstrate to the company if they are among the best compared to their competitors. Quant has been benchmarking the P&P industry for over 10 years and has a wide global database of paper and board machines’ efficiencies and maintenance costs, divided by production grades and geographical regions. Benchmarking with the best in the P&P industry is a strong tool when defining the full potential of maintenance.

      Having such a similar machinery makes it more important to have the capability to find, share and implement best practices. There is basically no new equipment failures in the P&P industry. If you get a machine failure or problem that you haven’t seen before, it most certainly has happened somewhere else earlier and there is maybe a solution for it already.

      In your opinion, did the Pulp and Paper industry just happen to be the first industry where outsourcing started?

        In the Affordable Wood Housing category, Monica Wozniak of Poland won the student prize for her design Natural Wood Skin. The student prize in the Tall Wood Buildings category went to Tatiana Chaatziioannou of France and Soufiane Chibani of Germany for their design The Social Net Wood.

        The ICFPA will continue its support of students and young professionals through its soon-to-be launched Blue Sky Young Researchers Innovation Award initiative, which aims to demonstrate the global forest products sector as a vibrant and dynamic workplace for the future.

                  Compared with cast iron cylinders, steel cylinders offer impressive features like higher thermal conductivity and greater material strength. These and other benefits mean that it makes good sense to install steel cylinders when upgrading dryer sections. Recently, WEIG-Karton also opted to install EvoDry steel cylinders at its plant in Mayen, Germany.

                  2015 07 09 091230Because EvoDry steel cylinders for the dryer section have high material strength they can have a thinner wall thickness than comparable cast iron cylinders. The temperature distribution in EvoDry drying cylinders is very even, which ensures optimum paper quality. The head and shell of EvoDry cylinders are welded to one another, so that larger sheet widths can be passed over the drying cylinder. The high material strength and low wall thickness of the steel cylinder result in higher thermal conductivity, improving heat transfer by 7 – 10 %. Thanks to this high efficiency, production can be stepped up or investment cost minimized when using EvoDry, as fewer drying cylinders need to be installed.

                  On two machines in Mayen, WEIG-Karton produces recycling board for the folding boxboard industry and plasterboard for the plasterboard industry. Total annual production is 630,000 metric tons of board. In 2014 the company decided to rebuild the dryer section of its BM 6 plasterboard machine. Voith won the order to convert the dryer section and installed a total of 31 EvoDry steel cylinders. The board manufacturer opted in favor of steel cylinders to achieve the maximum possible drying efficiency. As well as supplying the cylinders, Voith was also responsible for assembly and commissioning.

                  The rebuild of the dryer section was a smooth and fast process. After just 19 days, WEIG-Karton could resume production of plasterboard on its BM 6. “We are absolutely delighted that the rebuild was accomplished so quickly and smoothly,” says Henning Dippel, Operations Manager BM 6, adding: “We are equally pleased about our decision to install the EvoDry steel cylinders. We have been able to save space and yet achieve better runability and energy efficiency than before.” Shortly after startup of the EvoDry steel cylinders the guaranteed CD moisture profile values have already been achieved.

                  EvoDry drying cylinders can be used for the production of all paper grades. Optimum results are achieved with paper grades that are dried at high temperature, for example board and packaging papers.

                      The CSI 2140 already offers four-channel plus phase data collection to save time and effort, advanced vibration analysis that embeds expertise in the tool, and multi-plane balancing to correct imbalance in industrial fans. By adding a wireless link to laser fixtures, Emerson further streamlines the work process. Using the CSI 2140, personnel can perform route-based vibration data collection; analyse the root cause; and align the machine − all in one trip. At the same time, they can identify and solve machinery faults to prevent any unplanned downtime.

                      Tom Nelson, CSI 2140 senior technology manager at Emerson, defined the addition of alignment as, “the last piece of the puzzle to deliver a single, superior tool for diagnosing and correcting faults in rotating equipment.”

                      The shaft alignment option for the CSI 2140 uses the familiar, intuitive Emerson interface to guide technicians through a three-step process that quickly achieves precision alignment. The laser fixtures employ a unique Sweep technology to measure misalignment easily, even in tight clearance applications. An advanced option monitors the corrective machine moves in vertical and horizontal directions simultaneously. All data collected with the CSI 2140 can be uploaded wirelessly to a single database using the AMS Suite: Machinery Health™ Manager software. This enables the maintenance team to collect data, analyse problems, and document results in parallel.

                        isravision signet neuAt the manufacturing plant for Guangzhou Paper CO., LTD., production managers decided to install an ISRA VISION web inspection system with the capability to identify and classify relevant quality defects with the highest degree of reliability. The goal is to ensure that the highest quality demands are met at the fastest possible production speeds. Only an integrated automated inspection system can satisfy this requirements profile - and the only one that absolutely stands out with the technology required is offered by ISRA VISION.

                        The Chinese Guangzhou Paper CO., LTD., specializes in the manufacturing and global export of a variety of different paper products.

                        In order to continuously guarantee its customers the high quality they demand while ensuring the highest possible efficiency, the company made the decision to install a web inspection system on the paper machine PM1 line in Guangzhou. This machine, with a web width of 4,800 mm, produces newspaper and fine paper products that weigh between 45 g/m² and 70 g/m² at a web speed of 1,600 m/min.

                        Guangzhou Paper CO., LTD. made the investment in a PAPER MASTER inspection system from ISRA VISION. It uses five cameras that support the maximum resolution and ensure the highest processing speeds. The inspection of surfaces in transmission is conducted with high-power LED illumination. Not only does the surface inspection system identify all of the relevant quality defects 100% of the time, but it also categorizes them as well.

                        The crystal clear images of the recorded defects allow the PAPER MASTER inspection system to expertly categorize defects, providing the basis for a highly accurate quality inspection and defect documentation. With this in hand, the paper manufacturer knows exactly what kind of quality is being produced. The classifier teaching makes use of a similarity filter, making online inspection 1,000 times faster than that offered by any other system.

                        The manufacturer Guangzhou Paper CO., LTD., placing great importance on using state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment, chose ISRA VISION based on their position as the market leader in machine vision and as the only supplier to offer more than 30 years of experience in surface inspection and in producing web break monitoring systems.                           ppl may june 2015 openxWelcome to the May-June issue of Pulp Paper & Logistics. Over the past few weeks we heard the news of mill closures here in the UK. First was the announcement from Aylesford Newsprint that it had applied to go into administration with the loss of nearly 300 jobs and more recently we also had news from Tullis Russell Group that its papermaking subsidiary Tullis Russell Papermakers Limited had also been placed into administration by its directors.

                          This only highlights that papermakers in Europe continue to feel the pressure of declining demand and increasing energy costs coupled with raw materials trading at higher prices, all of which continue to drive mill owners to achieve the best productivity from machinery and equipment already in place, rather than upgrade.

                          In contrast, the tissue and packaging sector is on the up, with news of some significant orders for new machinery in recent months that highlight this growth area. There is also growing pressure on wood as a sustainable raw material and with authorities increasingly using wood as a source of energy the pressure on paper makers will continue. Yet amid increasing pressures to lower costs, increase efficiency, and lessen environmental impact, the use of ester- or vegetable-oil impregnated paper as an alternative has become a hot topic for transformer manufacturers and suppliers at CWIEME exhibitions of late.

                                    WEIDMANN hopes to add another hot topic…the paper itself. For the past 10 years, the international transformer insulation specialist has turned its attention to developing new papers.

                                    “Many companies are on the hunt for alternative transformer insulation materials and there is actually a lot we can do to make the tried and tested system better,” says Kevin Biggie, Senior Innovation Engineer at WEIDMANN ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY AG.

                                    Traditionally manufacturers use the same standard kraft cellulose paper throughout the transformer. Engineers at WEIDMANN, however, have discovered that by tailoring the properties of the paper to the differing insulation requirements of windings within the transformer, significant gains can be made in both cost and efficiency.

                                    No more one-size fits all

                                    2015 04 17 112032“We found that in the low-voltage winding, the mechanical properties of the paper took precedence, whereas in the high-voltage winding, the electrical properties were more important,” he says. “Using a combination of different papers, we are able to reduce the amount needed and improve the overall performance of the insulation."

                                    In both cases, the drying properties of the paper are also important but especially in the high-voltage winding. Cellulose paper naturally contains a certain amount of water yet can accelerate the ageing and decrease insulation performance once in service.

                                    “Ideally the insulation should have no residual moisture, which is why we have developed papers to have advanced drying properties,” Mr. Biggie says. “That means that a manufacturer can save some processing time and cost in the factory or, using the same process, reach a lower moisture content level. What’s more, the fact we use less paper has an indirect drying benefit since there’s less water to begin with.”

                                    Mr. Biggie will be discussing WEIDMANN’s research into distribution transformer insulation papers at the CWIEME Berlin exhibition in Germany on the 5th May, 15:25-16:05.

                                    In particular he will present the TUF-Flex® and INSULutions® DPE papers that the company has developed specially for low- and high-voltage windings respectively.

                                    Visitors to the exhibition will also have the opportunity to discuss these, as well as the recently-launched INSULutions® STRIP-Flex K paper for improved performance with narrow-strip high-voltage winding machines, on the WEIDMANN stand (4.2/F10).

                                    “When it comes to improving the cost and efficiency of insulation in distribution transformers, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel,” Mr. Biggie concludes. “Rather a few smart changes to the choice and combination of papers can make a world of difference.”

Voith developed its BlueLine range to meet both these requirements. Strong sales in the two years following the market launch of this product range confirm that this approach is appreciated in the industry.

                                        In the meantime, more than 40 IntegraGuard headbox screens have been sold. The machine head geometry was flow-optimized to keep the flow velocity through the screen consistent and low, which prevents strings and deposits. Thanks to the new improved head piece of the screen, the energy requirement of IntegraGuard could be reduced and pulsation minimized. As a result, energy efficiency and paper quality are improved.

The immersion model can be installed in open channels and basins, while the stainless steel hygienic in-line model can be inserted directly into pipes. The Turbimax CUS52D can be used at the raw water inlet of any plant and the outlet of process filtration and clarification. With available 2” triclamp the CUS52D is also well adapted to hygienic food and beverage processes in brewing, spirits, soft drink, dairy and others.                                           The sensor uses the 90° light scattering principle in accordance with the ISO 7027 standard. The optical signals from the sensor are continuously monitored and tested for plausibility. In the case of discrepancies, an error message is sent via the transmitter.

                                          A smart solid state reference for the Turbimax CUS52D allows the sensor to be verified and calibrated before insertion into the process without the use of liquid standards. As a result, neither employees nor processes come into contact with any harmful liquid standards such as Formazin, which are typically used for field calibration. The solid state references are matched to each sensor for maximum calibration accuracy, are simple to use, and provide consistent, reliable and clear results.

                                            Voith has developed a new rotor, the IntensaRotor R, for pulpers used to process recovered paper. It has been operating successfully for months with industrial customers and has proven that its energy consumption is as much as 20 percent below the usual values. The IntensaRotor R is suitable for installation in existing Voith pulpers as well as in pulpers from other manufacturers.

                                            During operation at both a Turkish paper mill, and at a paper manufacturer in China, the IntensaRotor R has proven that it has lower specific energy consumption at a higher throughput than its predecessors. In the first case, the daily output was increased from 260 metric tons to 300 tons, with an energy saving of eight percent per ton. In the second industrial example, the amount of stock after installation of the IntensaRotor R was increased from 510 metric tons to 630 tons per day, while energy consumption per ton dropped by 12 percent.

                                            Both the better energy balance and the higher output are due to the new rotor design. The IntensaRotor R is especially suitable for pulpers of secondary fiber applications in low-consistency area and is delivered in various sizes.

                                              A suction roll with a SolarFlow polyurethane cover from Voith has had its first maintenance after almost four years. The manufacturer of fine paper that owns the roll has called the running time of exactly 1,438 days between two grinding intervals a potential record-breaker. Suction rolls with other covers would often only manage a quarter of this running time.

                                              “We only achieved such a remarkable long running time between two grinding intervals thanks to high performance roll covers combined with regular and comprehensive service,” adds Jochen Honold, Global Product Manager Mechanical Roll Service.

                                              The suction roll was completely dismantled at the Voith Service Center in Ravensburg. This is a standardized procedure that ensures that the causes of signs of wear are discovered and can be rectified. “We perform a weak point analysis for each roll that we get for service. This means that we can save our customers future repairs,” says Alexander Reutlinger, Head of the Voith Service Center in Ravensburg.

                                              The SolarFlow polyurethane roll cover allows a maximized void volume, which is maintained over a long installation period due to its unique material properties. This enables stable nip conditions, therefore fast machine speeds with a high dry content and at the same time low energy consumption.

                                                2015 02 12 225924The PM7 is one of the world’s most modern machines for the production of newsprint.  It is rated to convert recycled paper and primary fibres into 360,000 tonnes of newsprint per year at an outstanding speed of 1,900 m/min.

                                                It is a giant of a machine that operates at the Swiss firm Perlen Papier AG, around the clock, 365 days a year and a range of LOCTITE products are playing their part in ensuring its reliable service.

                                                A short window of time, just a few hours, is allocated each month for maintenance.  The inner workings of the PM7 comprise many hundreds of rollers, cylinders, pumps, drives, pipes and valves and Henkel LOCTITE is the brand on which Perlen Papier AG relies for cleaning, bonding, sealing and lubricating these vital components.

                                                2015 02 12 225938Moist cellulose is sprayed onto rollers of the PM7 as part of the paper production process and it is essential that this, as well as surplus hydraulic oil, is effectively removed so the LOCTITE anaerobic adhesives can achieve the best possible bond and seal.  For this purpose the maintenance team uses LOCTITE SF 7063 to ensure there are no contaminants to impede the efficiency of the processes.

                                                The nature of the PM7’s job means its components are subject to constant vibration.  It is therefore important to ensure that threaded assemblies do not shake lose.  A Henkel mainstay for this application is LOCTITE 243.  This medium strength product is proven to tolerate slight contamination of industrial oil and is formulated to allow part disassembly with hand tools for servicing.

                                                For sealing of flanges – the cover of a large vacuum blower, for example – LOCTITE SI 5980 is the product of choice as it fills all surface irregularities and gaps to achieve the best possible bond.  This black, alkoxy silicone that was chosen by the maintenance team for its good oil resistance.

                                                Given the hot and damp environment, it is also essential that assemblies are protected against corrosion and fretting and why LOCTITE LB 8150 Anti-Seize is extensively used. This product contains aluminium, graphite and extreme pressure additives to provide lubrication at high temperatures and operating speeds.

                                                Paper is an extremely sensitive and diverse product and the work of Perlen Papier AG is more of an art than a process. It is therefore particularly important that all parts of the machine are working optimally to achieve the fine-balance between productivity and performance.  The efficiency of the LOCTITE maintenance products are essential to the mix and also to ensuring PM7 remains reliable over its anticipated 40 year life span.

                                                Two High Street retailers have recently sold greetings cards that could be contributing to forest destruction. The testing, organised by WWF-UK and carried out by a laboratory in Germany, tested 20 cards and envelopes. Three products, bought from Paperchase, the Card Factory and Clinton’s contained various amounts of Mixed Tropical Hardwood (MTH), meaning that the fibres had most likely come from natural growth tropical forests.

                                                Of the three retailers, one, Paperchase, seems able to provide evidence that their product was from a sustainable source. This highlights the need for firms to carefully scrutinise their supply chains to reassure themselves and their customers that their products are not contributing to forest destruction.

                                                More cards are bought per person in the UK than in any other country, with an average of 31 per person bought every year, and last year the UK market for greeting cards was valued at £1.29 billion. Due to legislative loopholes, it is possible to legally sell imported cards that have been made from illegally-logged or cleared forests. WWF wants the loopholes closed and firms to take proper responsibility for their supply chains. WWF believes consumers should be confident that the cards they buy are not contributing to the illegal logging or unsustainable harvest of forests in places like South East Asia.

                                                Beatrix Richards, Head of Corporate Stewardship Timber and Seafood, WWF, said;
                                                “These results suggest that the true cost of our Valentine’s card could be far greater than the price on the wrapping. They may be contributing to the further loss of some of the most valuable forests in the world. Companies that rely on forests for their raw materials should scrutinise their supply chains, and reassure consumers that they are buying cards made from recycled or sustainable materials.”

                                                Over thirty UK businesses have already signed up to WWF’s Forest Campaign that will help enable a market in 100% sustainable timber and wood products by 2020, including Carillion Kingfisher, Tesco, Marks and Spencer and Travis Perkins.

                                                Deforestation is an issue affecting some of our most important natural forests around the world, and with global demand for wood set to triple by 2050, businesses and countries need to get their act together in order to ensure a sustainable supply for the future.

                                                The European Timber Regulation (EUTR), which came in to force in March 2013, was set up across Europe to remove illegally sourced timber from the EU markets.
                                                Due to loopholes in the EUTR it is currently legal to import certain goods made from illegally sourced wood, such as greetings cards, musical instruments or books. These exemptions mean that some firms may be unwittingly or deliberately purchasing materials from dubious sources.

                                                20 cards and envelopes from three outlets were tested by the Institution for Paper Science and Technology in Darmstadt, Germany.
                                                The lab results found that one from each of the stores contained MTH (Mixed Tropical Hardwood):

                                                Card Factory – 10% MTH (in the card itself)

                                                Clintons – 8% MTH (in a paper component of the card)

                                                Paperchase – 5% MTH (in the envelope)

                                                The results shown here are products on the market in the UK that contain pulp from natural growth tropical forests – in this case, probably SE Asia.   In addition all of the products contained acacia, which carries a risk of being grown in plantations that have been created on recently cleared tropical forest.

                                                FAO’s State of the World’s Forests 2014 report outlined key findings on just how critical forest resources are to billions of people worldwide for their livelihoods. Forest provide them with socio-economic benefits including employment, fuel,, water and shelter. 

                                                Global deforestation rates are currently estimated at around 13 million hectares per annum, which is equivalent to an area the size of a football pitch being cut down every two seconds.
                                                The EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) came into force in March 2013. It covers a wide range of timber and wood products, as listed in its annex using EU customs code labelling. The EUTR also applies to timber products whether they were harvested in the EU or outside.

                                                EU member states are responsible for overseeing and applying the law – which means that all 28 EU countries must take active steps, and designate appropriate resources, to do so.

                                                For the EUTR to work in practice it will need the active participation of industry, government and civil society stakeholders, as well as even implementation across the EU. 
                                                Following the publication of WWF report on what is in or out of scope of the regulation, it is clear that the EUTR only covers 41% of all products by value. There are a wide range of products not covered by the regulation such as greetings cards, musical instruments and books.

                                                                    holmen logoHolmen Paper (STO:HOLMA)(STO:HOLMB) is launching a new product in the SC segment in spring 2015, which will reduce the company’s production of newsprint. “This new initiative will quickly bring about a significant change in newsprint volumes,” comments sales and marketing director Karolina Svensson.

                                                                    Intensive preparations are under way on PM 53 at Braviken Paper Mill outside Norrköping, Sweden, for the conversion work that is scheduled to begin at the end of January next year. PM 53 is Braviken’s largest machine, with an annual capacity of 310 000 tonnes for the current product mix. The machine produces Holmen NEWS (newsprint) and Holmen XLNT – the uncoated magazine paper that makes up Holmen Paper’s single biggest product family.

                                                                    It is the production of newsprint for export outside the Nordic region that is going to be reduced when the new product is introduced next year.

                                                                    “We are predicting a rapid rise in volumes for the new product,” says Karolina Svensson. “The aim is to achieve an annualised running rate for production and sales of more than 100 000 tonnes by the end of 2015.

                                                                    “We’ll be reducing the production of newsprint at a corresponding rate, and in the longer term we’ll only keep the volumes to supply our local markets in Scandinavia.”

                                                                    Holmen Paper judges that its own measures, combined with previously announced capacity closures elsewhere in the market, will considerably improve capacity utilisation for newsprint in 2015.

                                                                          voith logo 2013With the new InfiltraScrewpress, Voith is launching another product to join its BlueLine range of stock preparation machines, that impresses with its high dewatering performance, improved energy efficiency and low maintenance outlay. As part of Voith’s Compact Dispersion System it has been successfully in operation at a number of paper manufacturing sites.

                                                                          The Compact Dispersion System by Voith is a dispersion system featuring outstanding performance in the reduction of stickies and spot contamination. Further benefits are low energy consumption and space requirements, as well as high system availability. The Compact Dispersion System by Voith includes the InfiltraScrewpress, the InfibraHeater quick heating screw and the InfibraDisp disperser, which has also been newly developed. These machines also belong to the BlueLine product range.

                                                                          The InfiltraScrewpress boasts a design that is more than ten times stiffer than comparable machines, complementing its low center of gravity. This ensures the machine’s very tight tolerances over the entire operation cycle, allowing high dewatering performance and minimal fiber loss to be achieved. It is equipped with a double-thread press screw. The fiber suspension is fed into the screw press at a stock consistency of 8 – 12 % and is then transported by the press screw in axial direction. The suspension is thickened by the constricting volumes between press screw and screen baskets. Excess water is discharged via the screen baskets. The filtrate can thus be pressed out of the suspension and discharged via the screen baskets of the new SplitScreen screen elements. The remaining pulp is conveyed at a stock consistency of around 30% via the outlet of the screw press to the InfibraHeater quick heating screw.

                                                                          The double-thread design of the screw press provides a continuous stock discharge to the InfibraDisp disperser, resulting in a reduction of the energy consumption in downstream processes. Together with a special protective coating, a further positive effect of the even stock flow is an extended service life and low maintenance outlay.

                                                                          The SplitScreen screen elements feature improved dewatering performance and markedly greater ease of maintenance. Its special design allows quick replacement of the split screen plates without time-consuming disassembly of the entire screen element. The SplitScreen screen element is used in the new screw press, but can also be installed into existing screw presses as part of a rebuild package.

                                                                              Terex Material Handling has launched a new generation of cranes which sets a new standard in the industry with its Demag V-type crane. Thanks to its V-type design, which uses less material and helps to save resources, the V-type girder weighs on average 17 per cent less than comparable box-section profile girders. The reduced crane deadweight produces less wheel pressure, minimises the forces transmitted to the existing building structure and increases the maximum load capacity.                                                                               The design (patent pending), which features diaphragm joints, also cuts oscillation of the crane girder by up to 30 per cent. The reduced oscillation characteristics cause lower loads to be transmitted to the crane and its components, as well as to the entire building, and double the service life of the crane to more than 500,000 changes of load. In addition, the improved oscillation characteristics enable heavy and sensitive loads, such as glass panels, fluids or aluminium shell sections for aircraft, to be positioned more precisely and quickly.

                                                                              “The new V-type girder is the result of our continuous development in the crane engineering sector”, explains Andreas Hambrock, Head of the Universal Cranes Business Line at Terex Material Handling. “The new crane is an ideal supplement to our existing range of rolled and box-section girders. Thanks to its special design, sensitive loads can also be transported safely and precisely indoors and in outdoor applications. We are now able to cater to our customers‘ needs even better and can offer them solutions to meet their specific load handling requirements, boost their productivity and, at the same time, improve their operating safety.”

                                                                              The new Demag V-type girder is initially available as a single-girder crane on the German market. It can be employed for various crane types, such as overhead travelling cranes, suspension cranes, portal cranes or wall-mounted travelling cranes.

                                                                              Demag V-type crane: versatile,  fast, long service life

                                                                              Oscillation is a natural phenomenon that occurs in cranes. Lifting and travel motions result in forces that can cause a crane to resonate. That not only subjects the crane to loads. If the crane oscillates too much, it becomes difficult for the crane operator to handle loads precisely.

                                                                              Terex Material Handling has developed a crane that is specially designed for transporting sensitive loads with its Demag V-type crane.

                                                                              V-type design for efficient material flow
                                                                              Whether for logistics contractors, aircraft manufacturers or steel producers – all sectors of in- dustry now face strong international competition. To maintain their position in today’s market, they need optimum efficiency throughout their material flow processes. “That already begins with fast and precise load handling”, explains Andreas Hambrock, Head of the Universal Cranes Business Line at Terex Material Handling. “We want to give our customers the best possible support with our cranes.” For this reason, the development of the Demag V-type crane focussed on factors such as handling rates, a high lifting-capacity-to-deadweight ratio, high load capacity and stability. Cost effectiveness and the certainty of a reliable investment also played an important role. “The goal of our engineers was to design a high-performance crane that operates with a high level of precision for a lower weight and longer service life.”

                                                                              The result is a new design. “The crane girder is designed according to bionic engineering principles based on nature”, explains Andreas Hambrock. In a similar way to bone structure, material is only employed where it is necessary. Parts that are subjected to high loads are provided with additional stiffeners. “Diaphragm joints provide for optimum dissipation of force and, at the same time, an even distribution of pressure and tensile forces. That makes the Demag V-type crane extremely resilient to loads.” The result is a crane girder that weighs up to 17 per cent less, has up to 30 per cent less oscillation and offers double the service life. Terex Material Handling has patents pending for the new technologies incorporated in the Demag V-type crane.

                                                                              Lower deadweight, higher load capacity
                                                                              Thanks to its V-type design, Terex Material Handling has cut the deadweight of the Demag V-type girder by an average of 17 per cent with reference to a comparable box-section girder. This enables companies to utilise any reserves offered by their building structures and – de- pending on the load classification of the relevant rope hoists – to increase the lifting capacity of their installations even further. In this way, they are able to transport greater loads and no longer have to operate in the upper load capacity range. The lower deadweight also means that V-type cranes exert lower wheel pressures and transmit lower loads to the existing build- ing structure. Cranes can be integrated into existing workshops, assembly and production bays, often without the need for costly building refurbishment or changes to the building superstruc- ture. In addition, the eco-friendly use of materials also helps to protect the environment.

                                                                              Lower oscillation and improved precision
                                                                              The optimised deadweight-to-lifting ratio and improved dissipation of force enable the crane to steady the load more quickly. Crane owners benefit from higher performance and improved handling rates, since crane operators can position valuable and sensitive loads, such as glass panels, fluids and aluminium shell sections for aircraft, more gently and precisely.
                                                                              And this can already be accomplished without the need for electronic control systems. The

                                                                              A further benefit: thanks to its reduced oscillation characteristics, the entire crane installation, including its components, the crane runway and its supports as well as the building and its foundations are subjected to lower loads. This is reflected by reduced wear, for example. In addition, the crane also boosts cost-effectiveness, since heavier loads can be moved in exist- ing building without the need for companies to modify the building structure. Furthermore: the Demag V-type crane can manage some 500,000 changes of load and, therefore, can achieve double the service life with reference to a comparable crane that has a box-section girder. That provides greater certainty of a reliable investment.

                                                                              One crane to meet all requirements worldwide
                                                                              Thanks to its new design, the V-type crane is also suitable for outdoor operation, since its surface area that is exposed to the wind is up to 55 per cent smaller in comparison with crane that has a box-section girder. For indoor operation, the girder allows 30 per cent more light to pass in comparison with conventional box-section girders, which provides for a brighter and more attractive working environment. The improved light situation also allows companies to save costs for indoor lighting. Besides allowing more light to pass through, the improved view also benefits safety at the workplace: users have an improved field of view and can see what is happening on the other side of the crane.

                                                                              Compared to enclosed box-section girders, this benefit also pays off for service technicians, who can view the workshop through the crane girder. Since the design of the V-type crane affords a view of all weld seams, inspections and maintenance work can be carried out more easily.

                                                                              In principle, most of the drive motor output is needed simply to move the crane. A further benefit of the new Demag V-type crane: the lower crane deadweight may enable motors with a reduced rating to be employed for improved energy efficiency. That saves operating costs and is kinder to the environment.

                                                                              Emphasis was also placed on eco-friendly manufacturing processes for production of the crane. For example: the crane is blast-cleaned with dry ice before it is painted. The actual paints are water-soluble, thus avoiding the use of solvents that are harmful to the environment.

                                                                              At the product launch, the Demag V-type crane will initially be available in single-girder design in the form of overhead travelling, suspension, portal and wall-mounted travelling cranes.

                                                                              The overhead travelling and suspension cranes are available with spans of up to 30 metres and cover load capacities up to 12.5 tonnes. The Demag V-type crane is initially available in five different model variants for an optimum match with individual building contours. Depending on the situation – such as a bevelled or sloping inclined roof or installed pipes and conduits – the shape of the crane girder end will vary accordingly. Thanks to the new variable design, the V-type crane can be adapted with millimetre accuracy to the height of existing or planned buildings and modified in line with specific needs. Experienced Demag sales engineers can configure the best possible girder design for the given application based on customer wishes with a completely new Designer Tool in advance. Example for the height: depending on how much space is available between the crane runway and the lower edge of the building, the corresponding X and U dimensions are entered into the Crane Designer system to determine the optimum height of the crane.

                                                                                Faster, more flexible response to production and maintenance inspection needs

                                                                                Unilux has introduced the LED-12, the first handheld strobe light in its H2LED Series of second-generation LED inspection lights for the printing, converting, papermaking, metals and textiles industries. The lights are designed for additional applications, including maintenance, speed measurement, machine vision, camera inspection, motion timing and motion analysis.

                                                                                The LED-12 has twice the light output of its predecessor and is available in standard and UV models. The UV strobe light is available as an optional fixed-mount unit. The second generation adds an internal phase control for greater flexibility in handling production and maintenance operations. Its narrow-beam spot illumination covers a 45cm diameter when 90cm from the target.

                                                                                “LED technology continues to get better and better,” said Mike Simonis, President, Unilux. “Our second-generation handheld inspection lights raise brightness to the levels of our traditional strobes and deliver superior UV inspection capabilities that are so critical to the security needs of label and package printers. With much more extensive controls for more inspection and motion analysis capabilities, we can now provide an effective tool for product quality improvements and machine maintenance.”

                                                                                The LED-12 features an adjustable flash rate from 300 to 50,000 flashes per minute, internal and external phase control, flexible triggering sources and white light approaching the visible spectrum of sunlight. Its environmentally friendly diodes are ozone-free. The rechargeable battery provides up to one hour of continuous use for the standard LED and up to four hours for the UV model, depending on usage patterns.

                                                                                Unilux LED strobe lights use the stroboscopic effect to visually freeze detailed images of flat surfaces or machine parts moving at full production speed. Images allow process operators, technicians and engineers to use their knowledge and experience to spot and determine the causes of defects and to implement repair solutions. 

                                                                                Simonis said the new Unilux lights should help users reduce waste, unscheduled downtime and maintenance costs while raising yield.

The hard nip that occurs when using steel rolls impairs the lifecycle of the fabric and can also cause quality issues with the paper. The stability of InForce withstands the high loads while still providing the benefits of a polyurethane cover: surfaces can be tailored to the application, fabrics are not impaired in comparison with steel grooves.
