logo casCascades Inc., a leader in the recovery and production of green packaging and tissue products, was the recipient of a "Phare" Award presented by Korn/Ferry – Les Affaires, organizers of the prestigious contest that recognizes corporate governance and social responsibility.

For the past 11 years, the event has honoured companies and boards of directors who stand apart for ethical practices and excellence in corporate governance. This year, the judges decided to look at corporate governance specifically in regard to social responsibility. Cascades beat out the competition, capturing first prize in the "Corporate" category.

"We are very proud of this acknowledgement. At Cascades, we believe that all organizations have a moral duty to be socially responsible, that is, to take concrete steps toward incorporating social, environmental and economic issues into their operations. As you may know, we have quite a history in this area. Sustainable development and social responsibility are an integral part of our mission, vision and management philosophy," explained President and Chief Executive Officer Alain Lemaire.

The panel of judges acknowledged Cascades' stellar performance, highlighting its three-year sustainable development plan, which is based on the results of a broad consultation of all the company's stakeholders including clients, suppliers, employees, shareholders, local communities and environmental groups.

Mr. Lemaire would like to congratulate all the contest participants and the winners in the other categories.

logo casCascades (TSX: CAS) released yesterday the name of the winner of the fourth edition of the Sustainable Supplier Award, a contest that aims to recognize best business practices in sustainable development among its suppliers. Created by the company's Corporate Procurement Department, this award enables Cascades to publicly acknowledge the efforts of its suppliers that have had positive repercussions on its products, processes or manufacturing methods. The projects undertaken were also assessed on their environmental, societal and economic impacts. This year, although many projects caught the attention of the jury, Xerium was the winner.

About Xerium Technologies

Xerium Technologies, with its Weavexx and Stowe divisions, have been working in the pulp and paper industry since the mid-1800s. The company is a leader in paper machine clothing and roll technology. In particular, it provides forming fabrics, press felts, dryer felts, roll covers and spreader rolls. The manufacturing of these products focuses on the reduction of total costs, the improvement of sheet quality and overall machine efficiency. The long standing business partnership between Cascades and Xerium has led them to integrate state-of-the-art rolls and fabrics in many Cascades Tissue Group plants in North America (Candiac, Eau Claire, Kingsey Falls, Mechanics, Memphis, Ransom, Rockingham, Scarborough, Whitby). Integrated projects on fourteen machines have helped increase efficiency of operations. This optimization has generated significant savings in costs as well as a reduction in the consumption of water and energy in the targeted plants. Xerium distinguished itself by providing a file that was exemplary, supported by figures and highlighting the positive environmental and economic repercussions of its project.

Harold Bevis, President and Chief Executive Officer of Xerium, thanked Cascades for this unique recognition: "I see this prize as one of the best incentives for encouraging suppliers like us to engage in a sustainable development approach with its clients. For the coming years, Xerium intends to continue developing paper machine clothing and rolls technology for the purpose of improving the performance of its clients.”

Suppliers play a major role in the value chain of a manufacturing company like Cascades. The Sustainable Supplier Award is a prime example of the importance that Cascades attaches to good relations. According to Alain Lemaire, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cascades, “if year after year we succeed in distinguishing ourselves and in bringing to market top quality products, it is partly thanks to our suppliers who bring us concrete solutions and that help us improve ourselves”.

The prize was awarded during the annual meeting of Cascades' plant managers in North America, in front of more than one hundred people. It was deemed the most appropriate time by Cascades because it made it possible to highlight the accomplishments of some plants as well as make known the supplier that is being honored and its expertise in other units of the company.

For Cascades, supporting employees in their philanthropic initiatives has always been of paramount importance, which is why, in 2012, the company created its first "Socio-Hero" contest. Taking inspiration from the well-known "Eco-Hero" contest, this new contest recognizes employees who are exceptionally dedicated to their communities.

Cheryl Hicks, Joseph Boachie and Johanne Fournier stand out for their active involvement in causes they care deeply about. The selection committee was touched by the positive actions they carry out on a daily basis, good deeds that often go unnoticed by the general public. The winners each received a prize of $1,000, to be donated to the non-profit organization of their choice.

The U.S. winner, Cheryl Hicks, who was chosen for her remarkable kindness, is actively involved with four organizations in her area: Safe Voices, The Root Cellar, Good Shepherd Food Bank and Hope Haven Gospel Mission. This "Socio-Hero" also sits on the advisory committee of the Culinary Arts Department at Central Maine Community College, where she helps to promote the program.

Joseph Boachie, the winner in English Canada, gives himself body and soul to the organization he co-founded, Connecting Paths Canada. He also created the "Ready-to-Learn" program, a free, individualized learning program that provides approximately 60 young people with what they need to succeed in school.

The Québec winner, Johanne Fournier, is a shining example of generosity for us all. Every year, she manages to assemble more than a hundred Christmas baskets piled high for low-income families who benefit from the services at La Maisonnette des Parents.

Cascades wishes to shine the spotlight on these employees, whose hard work makes a real difference in their communities. They embody concrete examples of mutual support, generosity and the gift of self. Cascades is extremely proud to have these Cascaders, who perpetuate the core values of the company in their daily lives, as part of their large family. The company strongly encourages them to continue with their pursuits and invites their colleagues to follow their example. Congratulations to the three winners and all those who were nominated!

cas papCascades has once again garnered a coveted Pulp & Paper International (PPI) Award. This time, with its newest product innovation, an environmentally friendly security paper made with 100% post-consumer fiber: CheckSecur Platinum Enviro™. Customers can now reach their environmental objectives while being protected against the most sophisticated forms of fraud.

The technology of using post-consumer fibers to produce secure documents was almost nonexistent. As customers were seeking additional environmental attributes for their security papers, Cascades' innovation took on the challenge – and prevailed. Drawing on 45 years of recovery and de-inking expertise along with extensive R&D, Cascades manufactured a unique UV dull pulp made with 100% post-consumer fiber. Strong partnerships with our customers allowed us to test the new paper on different press technologies, a crucial step before going to market.

CheckSecurPlatinumEnviro™ maintains all the advanced security features of traditional virgin fiber papers, including a multi-tone watermark, yellow-fluorescent invisible fibers and blue-visible fibers, chemical reactive treatment, SecurLaserPlusTM technology and MICR-OCR compatibility. Environmentally speaking, using 10,000 CheckSecurPlatinumEnviro™ checks rather than its virgin equivalent saves: 1 tree, 993 gal. of water, 326 lb. of air emissions and 125 lb. of solid waste. Impressive numbers for a premium security paper.

“As a leader in sustainable development, it was only natural for Cascades to innovate towards a more sustainable solution. CheckSecurPlatinumEnviro™ differentiates us from the competition and addresses a long-standing market need for environmentally friendly products, without compromising document security.” – Normand Champagne, General Manager, Security Papers, Cascades Fine Papers Group.

Cascades Receives 2012 Green Supply Chain Award

logo casCascades is the proud recipient of a 2012 Green Supply Chain Award for its sustainable approach to its supply chain. It will be listed along with other award winners in the December issue of the American magazine Supply & Demand Chain Executive, specialists in the supply chain sector for over 10 years.

The Green Supply Chain Award recognizes companies who make sustainability a core part of their supply chain strategy, and work to achieve measurable sustainability goals within their own operations and supply chains. It also recognizes providers of supply chain solutions and services who assist their customers in achieving measurable sustainability goals.

Cascades was recognized for its closed-loop business process with its Cascades Recovery Division, for its collaboration with sustainable supply chain management company EcoVadis, and for its annual presentation of the Sustainable Supplier Award honoring its distribution partners' role in advancing sustainability.

Closing the loop with Cascades Recovery

Through Cascades' Recovery division, the company collects a significant amount of its raw material such as paper and cardboard from its clients, sorts it and sends it to be manufactured into a new product before selling it back. This integrated vision offers several advantages: better quality control of raw materials, the production of “new” transformed products, a recycling service for clients and the strategic benefits clients reap from working with a corporate citizen. With this unique service, Cascades offers a smart way for clients to reduce their supply chain ecological footprint.

Encouraging good business practices among Suppliers

In 2012, Cascades began working with sustainable supply chain management platform company EcoVadis to survey and evaluate its suppliers' social responsibility performance using 21 parameters. The ongoing process highlights its suppliers' strengths and weaknesses, and assesses where there is room for improvement.

Awarding innovative suppliers

Since 2009, Cascades rewards the suppliers who take initiatives in sustainable development through developing and testing new technologies, products and procedures that ultimately allow Cascades to improve its environmental, social and economic performance. Innovative Cascades Antibacterial Paper Towel provides a simple and effective way to further reduce bacterial contamination and transmission

North America's fourth largest producer of towel and tissue paper, Cascades Tissue Group, announced today the U.S. launch of the Cascades Antibacterial Paper Towel. Redefining the hand towel's role in enhancing hygiene, the Cascades Antibacterial Paper Towel minimizes hand contamination by killing 99.99 percent of harmful bacteria almost instantly unlike ordinary paper towels.

Since 80 percent of all infections are transmitted by hand, the lack of proper hand hygiene, in particular inadequate hand washing and drying practices, continues to be a consistent, if not deadly, problem. The distinctly green-colored Cascades Antibacterial Paper Towel can fit anywhere, doesn't require additional steps and compensates for people's imperfect hygiene habits without changing the way they wash or dry their hands. The towel releases the active ingredient Benzalkonium Chloride when in contact with wet hands. This active ingredient has been around since 1935 and is safely used in common products, including gel sanitizers, baby wipes and antiseptic skin solutions.

First cleared by Health Canada, Cascades' innovative paper product now complies with the regulation and policies of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It is expected to be a hit for the healthcare, foodservice, food processing and education industries, where businesses face a daily challenge: reduce bacterial contamination and transmission. As one example, the U.S. Department of Health estimates that at any given time about one in every 20 inpatients has an infection related to hospital care.

“It's a first-of-a-kind product that eliminates residual bacteria almost instantly. Now everyone can help control the spread of bacteria, ”said Suzanne Blanchet, CEO of Cascades Tissue Group and product champion. “While this is a groundbreaking innovation, the Antibacterial Paper Towel makes good common sense as it relates to human health. We believe the product will revolutionize the paper towel's role in proper hygiene because of its efficacy and because it doesn't require a change of habits.”

Cascades Tissue Group has performed several third-party laboratory tests to ensure the safety and efficacy on the Antibacterial Paper Towel. Importantly, microbiologists also note that using the Antibacterial Paper Towel in conjunction with washing hands with soap and water provides a more hygienic result than using alcohol-based gels and other hand sanitizers. While these products kill bacteria and are useful when there is no water and soap available, they don't remove the organic matter (grease, dirt, blood, fecal matter) often found on hands.

Additionally, Cascades Tissue Group produced the Antibacterial Paper Towel using the best environmental practices. It contains 100 percent recycled fiber, and is made using five times less water than the North American paper industry average, making it an environmentally preferable option as well. For more information, visit www.cascades.com/bacteria

Product Adds to Growing Portfolio of Novel Towel and Tissue Innovations

This paper towel is the third innovation Cascades Tissue Group has introduced to the North American “Away-from-Home” market this year. Earlier this year, the company launched Cascadesâ Eliteä towels and Cascadesâ Mokaä bathroom tissue.

Cascades Elite hand towels are made with a unique technology that – for the first time ever – gives recycled fiber paper towels a level of softness and absorbency that's equivalent to the through-air-dried (TAD) ultra-soft paper towels made from virgin fiber sources. While its feel and absorbency are the same as TAD products, its environmental impact is not, as the technology generates 78 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Cascades Moka, North America's most sustainable and first beige-colored bathroom tissue, contains corrugated cardboard as part of its pulp recipe. Boldly, the product also does not undergo the whitening phase used by papermakers to “improve” aesthetics. The beige result means minimal energy, chemicals and natural resources used in manufacturing, yet it is just as soft and hygienic as the white tissue alternative.
