More than 200 cleaning industry leaders gathered for a black-tie Awards dinner on London’s iconic Cutty Sark on 15th March, as the winners of the Sustainability Awards were revealed. The event was the first in a new Awards programme launched by Metsä Tissue in the UK, in partnership with the Cleaning & Support Services Association, which aims to promote sustainability and reward its champions.

Awards attendees enjoyed exclusive access to the Cutty Sark, which boasts three decks: the Dry Hold, ‘Tween Deck’ and Main Deck, before arriving in the sustainably dressed beautiful copper-clad hull for a delicious, and again sustainably prepared meal before moving into the ceremony.

The Event was opened by Esa Kaikkonen, CEO of Metsa Tissue Ltd, who welcomed everyone, expressed appreciation for the entrants and then explained how the Judges said it was almost impossible to separate the winners from their shortlisted competitors, the margins between them were so fine.

Next came Mika Paljakka, Metsä Tissue's senior vice president for Metsä Tissue, UK & Ireland, who continued the excellence theme. “In the case of the Individual Award, there was nothing that could separate two of the contenders so we took the decision to make them both Joint Winners,” he explained.  “However, it was not just the shortlisted companies that split the judges; each of the 64 entries received, from 43 different companies, had its own merits and the thought and hard work that had gone into each of the projects was hugely impressive. He said “The judges believed that they were all winners.”

"Our aim in launching these Awards was to highlight and reward sustainability practices throughout our industry, not only to create a positive impact on the environment, but to raise awareness of the professionalism of our industry, amongst those outside of it. I would encourage all the winners – and indeed all those who made it onto the shortlist – to make ample use of their ‘Winner’ logo or ‘Finalist’ logo on websites, stationery etc. and share their good news with their local press and all the social media channels available to them. As an industry we are achieving great things and we should take advantage of the opportunity these Awards have brought to ‘sing our own praises’, as it were.

Another winner during the evening was children’s charity UNICEF. Guests were invited to make donations to the charity throughout the evening. “Part of our strategy is to support local charities or children’s/youth charities,” Mika explained. “We chose to raise funds for UNICEF this evening as the organisation - which provides crucial humanitarian and developmental aid to children in more than 192 countries - is particularly stretched at the moment, as it strives to help the thousands of children displaced and/or orphaned by the recent earthquakes. They obviously need as much help as possible, and we are delighted that our guests were so generous with their donations.”

In keeping with the theme of the Awards, guest speaker Charlie Luxton, the architectural designer and TV presenter who puts sustainability at the heart of his work. Charlie shared his thoughts on our need to always consider sustainability and our environment when undertaking any development or refurbishment project.

Mika says “to complete our sustainable approach, Planet Mark, a leading sustainability certification, is ensuring that Metsä Tissue’s UK Sustainability Awards 2023 are carbon neutral in accordance with internationally recognised specification for carbon neutrality published by BSI (PAS2060). In addition to verifying the Award’s carbon neutrality status, we were pleased to welcome Planet Mark’s founder and CEO Steve Malkin on our judging panel.”

And the winners were…

Metsä Tissue's, part of Metsä Group, renewed the tissue paper machine at the Mänttä mill and has moved from the trial run phase to continuous production. The renewed paper machine will be used to produce fresh fibre-based tissue paper products, especially for the Finnish market. The upgrade will increase the production capacity of the tissue paper machine by 15 per cent, as well as improve product quality and energy and production efficiency.

The renewal is an investment in increasing the production and improving the quality properties of Lambi, Serla and Katrin tissue paper products manufactured locally in Mänttä. The first products were trialled in June and the softness and strength of the paper have further improved. The new technology also enables tissue paper to be produced more energy-efficiently than before. The main machine supplier for the renewal was Valmet.

"Tissue papers which are familiar to consumers’ everyday life are products that are important to the society’s security of supply. The renewal of the tissue machine enables us to increase production and at the same time take an important step toward fossil-free production. Development work on the renewal continues and I believe we will achieve the benefits we are aiming for and beyond. Our energy consumption will be reduced by around 15 per cent per tonne of paper produced, leading to lower carbon dioxide emissions in line with our sustainability targets. In addition to increased production capacity and better paper quality, also our occupational safety will improve," says Kari Karttunen, VP of Production of the Mänttä mill.

2022 09 29 105349

“We are proud to have the opportunity to continue our co-operation with Metsä Tissue in this important renewal project for Mänttä PM10. This is the third Advantage ViscoNip rebuild project that Valmet and Metsä Tissue have done together, and the cooperation has been very good in all projects. Valmet’s ViscoNip technology has major benefits related to improving product quality, reducing energy consumption and increase production capacity and is very well suited for rebuilds,” says Björn Magnus, Sales Director Rebuild & Single sales, Valmet.

Metsä Tissue's strategy is to serve customers close to the markets with sustainably produced hygiene tissues and solutions. The main raw material used in tissue paper products is renewable northern wood, fresh fibre, which is pure, high quality and gives tissue paper good strength and softness properties.

Metsä Tissue's Mänttä mill produces Serla, Lambi and Katrin tissue paper products and customers' own brands as well as SAGA baking paper products. The mill has three tissue machines, one greaseproof paper machine and 11 tissue converting lines.

In cooperation with AFRY, Metsä Tissue, a part of Metsä Group, has calculated the carbon footprint of toilet paper in its eight European mills, and explored also the differences in the footprints of toilet papers made of fresh and recycled fibres. The results for the products analysed by the company indicate that a roll of toilet paper made of fresh fibre has a carbon footprint that is approximately one fifth smaller than a roll made of recycled fibre.

Metsä Tissue is one of Europe’s largest tissue paper producers, having production in five countries at eight tissue paper mills, producing products from both fresh and recycled fibres. Fresh fibre based tissue papers and their production close to the markets are key elements of the company’s strategy and the use of fresh fibres in Metsä Tissue’s production will continue to increase. Currently, fresh fibres account for around half of the raw material.

“Our carbon footprint analysis was inspired partly by the fact that products made of recycled fibre are often considered a better alternative for the environment, and partly by the increasing challenges in availability and quality of recycled raw material. The biggest differences in the carbon footprints arise from the amount of energy and water needed to purify recycled fibre. To be suitable for hygiene use and food contact, recycled fibre requires effective purification, while fresh fibre is naturally suitable for hygiene use,” says Johanna Kesti, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Communications and Sustainability, at Metsä Tissue.

2021 11 25 085012

The carbon footprint analysis offers positive news to tissue paper consumers and producers. The average carbon footprint of tissue papers produced at Metsä Tissue’s mills was 1.4 t CO2 e per tonne of paper. The average European consumes around 12.8 kg of toilet paper a year, which is equivalent to approximately 17.92 kg of CO2. In turn, this corresponds to only around 0.27% of each European’s overall annual carbon footprint. When we use premium fresh fibre based products for hygiene purposes, we create a smaller carbon footprint than when using products made of recycled fibre. Because of its declining availability, recycled fibre will in the future be used in solutions that have lower hygiene and quality requirements than tissue papers, where material yield is higher and where the fibres stay longer in circulation. These include for example transport cardboard packaging.

Fresh fibre is the hygiene material of the future. By using fresh-fibre products, consumers get sustainably produced tissues with high quality. The production of fresh-fibre paper consumes less energy and water at the tissue mill, and more than 90 per cent of the raw material can be utilised. The use of recycled fibre is less efficient, as only around 60 per cent of the raw material ends up in hygienic tissues and the rest is waste that needs to be processed. In other words, a responsible tissue consumer does not need to compromise on pleasant quality, product safety or sustainability,” Kesti adds.

The EU’s product environmental footprint category rules (PEFCR) were used in the carbon footprint study to calculate the global warming potential (GWP) of base paper production. Product calculations were performed by AFRY in accordance with the ISO 14067:2018 standard and based on the data supplied by Metsä Tissue’s mills.

Transition to Circular Economy is a necessity when we wish to create a better and more sustainable future for our children and the generations to come. We need to make the most of our limited resources and work together against climate change. Amerplast and Metsä Tissue’s Serla brand are partnering to introduce the first Circular Economy Tissue Packaging to the market.

2019 03 08 094918Amerplast’s ESSI Kiertokääre is a circular economy packaging concept that utilizes recycled plastic from industrial sources and post-consumer recycled plastic packaging separately collected from Finnish households. According to Amerplast research the use of recycled raw materials decreases the environmental effects of packaging and also the need for virgin raw materials.

What makes Serla’s Green Pack packaging unique is not only the use of recycled materials. The packaging is a combination of both the ESSI Kiertokääre concept and biobased Green PE polyethylene. Green PE is produced using ethanol, a by-product in sugar production. It contains no fossil raw materials and can be recycled in existing recycling streams. Sugar cane is a 100% renewable and carbon dioxide depleting resource. It removes up to 2.15 metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere for each ton produced, from cradle to the supplier Braskem’s gate (source: LCA study by E4tech & LCA Works). After use, the Green Pack packaging is fully recyclable through existing recycling streams as raw material for new tissue packaging.

“We are excited and proud to launch this innovative material on Serla yellow toilet tissue packages. Sustainability is in the core of the Serla brand, and in addition to this new packaging we are supporting the Circular Economy also by using recycled paper in Serla products”, says Hanna Hirvonen, Brand Manager for Serla.

“Amerplast is committed to develop sustainable solutions for flexible packaging applications as a part of our AmerGreen sustainability program. Our emphasis is on the recyclability and the use of recycled and biobased materials. We are constantly looking for more sustainable alternatives to traditional oil based virgin raw materials. Our target is to make recycled and bio based raw materials a standard in our business”, says Ari-Pekka Pietilä, Amerplast CMO. “Transition to circular economy is a team effort and cooperation with innovative and environmentally aware customers like Metsä Tissue play a key role in the transformation of our industry into an environmentally sound business”, Pietilä concludes.

About Amerplast

The LNG company Skangas and Metsä Tissue Corporation have entered into an agreement on the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the Mänttä tissue paper mill for production process use. At the mill in Mänttä, Finland, LNG will replace liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the paper drying process. The fuel switch from LPG to LNG will improve competitiveness and cut the company’s carbon dioxide emissions.

LNG will be delivered to the Mänttä mill by road tanker from the Skangas Pori LNG terminal. Before being used, LNG will be regasified at the mill. In cooperation with the Technical Services of its parent company, Gasum, Skangas will carry out the modification and equipment installation work relating to the fuel change.

”We’re aiming to constantly improve the mill’s environmental performance. LNG will reduce carbon dioxide emissions from our production, which was the decisive factor in our decision to make the switch,” Metsä Tissue Mänttä Mill Manager Kari Karttunen says. ”We celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Mänttä mill in September. We’re developing our operations so that we’ll be producing tissue and cooking papers sustainably in the future, too.”

”It's great that Metsä Tissue switches to cleaner energy and at the same time the Finnish LNG market grows. LNG is an excellent alternative as a fuel for the various paper industry processes and also for energy production. We offer environmentally friendly LNG for diverse industrial needs,” Skangas CEO Kimmo Rahkamo says.

The Metsä Tissue Mänttä mill produces toilet tissues, household towels, handkerchiefs, industrial rolls and greaseproof paper for baking and cooking products. The mill has three tissue paper machines, one greaseproof paper machine and 11 converting lines for tissue paper.

LNG can be used to replace the use of petroleum-based fuels in industry, energy production and heavy-duty road transport. Using LNG instead of oil helps achieve significant cuts in particulate as well as sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions. The use of LNG also enables a switch to liquefied biogas (LBG) without any additional investments. LNG meets the requirements set by the Sulphur Directive regulating shipping emissions as well as the stricter emission limits to be applied in the future.
