Net Impact today announced the finalist universities for a case competition with International Paper, a global leader in the paper and packaging industry, andStaples, Inc. , the world's largest office products company. The innovative collaboration between International Paper, Staples and Net Impact, teamed up MBA students from the Net Impact network to identify recycling solutions to help improve each company's environmental performance and bottom line.

"Our partnership with International Paper and Staples is a win-win," said Liz Maw, executive director, Net Impact. "While Net Impact student members are helping IP and Staples come together to uncover environmental opportunities, we are helping build environmentally responsible future business leaders."

From a pool of 10 teams, the three finalist universities selected to participate in a semester-long process are:

  • Blekinge Institute of Technology (Karlskrona, Sweden)
  • Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs (New York City, N.Y.)
  • University of Michigan, Stephen M. Ross School of Business / School of Natural Resources & Environment (Ann Arbor, Mich.)

"Working with Net Impact and International Paper on this case competition is a way for Staples to leverage some of the world's top students to apply their business and process expertise to address an issue with significant environmental implications," said Mark Buckley, vice president, environmental affairs, Staples. "Through the environmentally preferable products and recycling services that we offer customers and our commitment to renewable energy and green construction, Staples is focused on positive change that truly makes a difference in the world."

The three finalist teams have been working since February with key leaders at International Paper and Staples, discussing questions and reviewing the progress of their strategic plans. The teams are in the process of submitting their final plans, which will be evaluated by a panel of judges.

"The collaborative partnership with a valued customer like Staples and the Net Impact organization is just another step in our sustainability commitments," said David Kiser, IP's vice president, environment, health, safety and sustainability. "Exploring creative business solutions will help recover more renewable paper products and put them back to use. It will also support improving environmental footprints, sustaining socially responsible business practices and increasing economic returns."

For the past 20 years, recovery rates for paper and paperboard packaging have delivered a year-over-year increase. The paper industry has worked hard to exceed a 60 percent recovery rate, and even more creative efforts could further this positive trend.

The winning team will be announced in late June 2010 and will receive a $5,000 cash prize, one-year passes to the national parks, and free registration with a travel stipend for the Net Impact Conference at the University of Michigan in November 2010 - where the team will present its winning proposal. The other two finalist teams will receive $1,000 each.

Printers, end-users and other organizations can now add their logos and company information to customized versions of brochures in International Paper's popular myth-busting environmental series, "Down to Earth."

Issues of "Down to Earth(TM)", the environmental educational series from International Paper, are now available for customization by printers, end-users and other organizations that want to add their logo and company information to the brochures before sharing them with customers. This co-branding initiative is another opportunity for printers and others to help dispel some false claims about paper and printing that can have a negative impact on the paper and forest products industry.

Four of the most sought after "Down to Earth(TM)" topics are available as co-branding templates with offset and digital artwork provided. Available issues are: Is it Worth Printing?; Are Pixels Greener than Paper?; How Do Certification Labels and Logos Benefit You?; and How Does Using Paper Lead to More Trees?

"Printers and many other customers can differentiate themselves from the competition and show their sustainability savvy by taking advantage of this co-branding opportunity," said Teri Shanahan, IP's vice president, Commercial Printing. "Our goal is to get the right environmental messages to as many people as possible so they can continue to feel great about using paper and print. With our 'Down to Earth(TM)' brochures, printers and others can have fact-based, ready answers supplemented with co-branded selling tools when presented with questions and concerns about paper and the environment."

Printers and other organizations who wish to download and co-brand these International Paper "Down to Earth(TM)" templates can go to the company's sales and marketing tool portal, getgrowkeep.com, and register as a new user. The link to the templates can be found in "Featured Items" or by clicking on Catalog, then Environmental, then Sustainability Materials. Instructions and guidelines for adding logos and company information are provided.

In addition, interested parties can go to the Media Center at the newly released down2earthonline.com to obtain banner artwork that allows them to link directly to the website from their company/organization website or blog, supplementing their own environmental messages. The down2earthonline.com site is very popular with industry and consumers with its easy access to factual paper and environmental information.

Environmental issues in the paper and printing industries are very complex, can be easily misunderstood and, consequently, often misrepresented. The "Down to Earth(TM)" co-branding initiative provides a balanced and fact-driven picture in a thought-provoking manner that shows how choosing paper products protects the environment, supports communities and keeps our forests growing. Through a partnership with the National Park Foundation, International Paper is launching a series of commemorative national park cups, available for use by parks, concessionaires and others. The cups - International Paper's commercially compostable ecotainer(R) - feature eight different artistic renderings of iconic national parks along with an educational message about conservation and environmental stewardship.

"International Paper has a strong legacy of environmental responsibility, and our ecotainer compostable foodservice products are just one example of our stewardship," said John Faraci, International Paper's chairman and chief executive officer and National Park Foundation board member. "We are proud to honor our national parks through this commemorative cup and are looking forward to working with the parks and others to develop composting and recycling solutions."

International Paper will donate one penny for each commemorative cup sold, up to $1 million, to the National Park Foundation to be used to support the Foundation's efforts to promote and protect our national parks.

"International Paper is launching a truly holistic project to support national parks," said National Park Foundation President and CEO Neil Mulholland. "This effort is simultaneously raising needed funds to help protect America's parks, and is also helping promote the range of amazing places for the public to visit - all in an environmentally responsible way."

The national park ecotainer cups can be purchased for use by any national park, concessionaire or other organization that would like to support the parks. The national park ecotainer cups feature iconic national parks - five hot cup designs and three cold cup designs. The cups come in assorted sizes.

In conjunction with the launch of the national park ecotainer cup, International Paper has recently partnered with the Grand Teton Conservation District to conduct a waste characterization study at the Grand Teton National Park. The study, funded in part by International Paper, is aimed at identifying best practices in foodservice waste reduction and composting solutions in order to transfer that knowledge to national parks throughout the country. The national park ecotainer cup is being used as part of the study.

Produced by International Paper, the national park ecotainer cups use paperboard from the company's Riegelwood, N.C., paper mill that is coated at its Prosperity, S.C., extrusion plant, and formed into cups at its Kenton, Ohio, foodservice facility.
