Veolia Water Technologies will support a major expansion of a mill in Brazil by providing a turnkey chloride removal system designed to optimize the processing of wood-derived pulp used in the making of cellulose fibers.

Eucalyptus forests grow faster in Brazil than in almost any other region of the world. Many of these national wood resources are increasingly used for dissolving wood production that meets the fast-growing demand from apparel brands for making textiles with renewable fibers instead of synthetic ones. On the back of this trend, one of the world’s largest pulp producers is expanding its dissolving wood pulp operations in Brazil to convert the cellulose of hardwood forests into the raw material to produce not only staple fibers (rayon-grade) or viscose filament yarns but also specialty fibers used in the manufacturing of a wide variety of pharmaceutical and food products.

2020 02 21 093307The pulping production uses a washing and cleaning process to increase the purity of the pulp. The resulting product of this process is a liquid stream that is rich in organics for energy production. This liquor, however, requires careful management and removal of chemicals to avoid the undesired build-up of chloride and potassium in the recovery cycle, which if left uncontrolled, can create corrosion and boiler fouling.

To prevent significant boiler capacity losses and increased operating costs, Veolia will treat 650 tons per day of precipitator ash. Based on advanced crystallization technology, HPD® Enhanced Chloride Removal Process (ECRP™) will be integrated into the project to yield the best control of sodium recovery and chloride removal steps.

The state-of-the-art chloride removal system is designed by Veolia Water Technologies to optimize the recovery process in the industry of transformation of hardwood cellulose into pulp for textile fibers and fine paper making.

Rising paper consumption in Asia and growing global demand for more environmentally friendly fibers for the apparel industry are driving the increase in pulp making capacity to convert renewable fibers into a variety of fine paper products and viscose staple.

In tropical Indonesia, the Riau province is a major hub for the forestry industry and is home to the operations of the Asia Pacific Resources International Holdings Limited (APRIL) Group, the world’s second-largest producer of bleached hardwood kraft pulp.

APRIL-owned Riau Andalan Pulp & Paper (RAPP) produces pulp of the highest purity at one of the world’s largest paper mills in Kerinci (Riau). As a result, RAPP performs pulping washing and cleaning steps which produce an organics-rich liquid stream. When this liquor is burned in the recovery cycle, it generates renewable power that helps the mill become energy self-sufficient. Over time, however, the process creates chloride and potassium accumulation which, if not tightly controlled, causes corrosion and boiler fouling increasing maintenance costs.

Hence, to prevent efficiency losses and boiler downtime, these chemicals need to be managed. To this end, Veolia will treat 550 tons per day of precipitator ash through its Enhanced Chloride Removal Process (ECRP™). Featuring best-in-class HPD® crystallization technology, this advanced system is designed to yield the best control of sodium recovery and chloride and potassium removal steps while minimizing energy consumption and related emissions.

Veolia Water Technologies will provide a turnkey processing plant featuring HPD® evaporation systems designed to optimize the production of wood-derived pulp employed in the making of high-quality paper from virgin fibers.

The design of a circular bio-economy may seem a relatively new concept that emerged from the declaration of the sustainable development goals of the UN 2030 Agenda. For pulp and papermakers, however, it has been a reality for a long time. For example, over half of the energy used by the industry comes from biomass that becomes a renewable and therefore carbon-neutral fuel sourced from local forests. And, because of investments in combined heat and power (CHP) generation, modern Kraft pulp mills are entirely energy self-sufficient thanks to the combustion of biomass that makes use of otherwise forest residues. This excess energy can then be used to improve pulping operations.

203 2031955 veolia logo veolia.pngAt the industrial site in Saint-Gaudens on the foothills of the Pyrenees in southwestern France, Fibre Excellence, a holding group specialized in the paper and forest-products industry, installs a new turbine to generate green energy from biomass. To optimize the overall efficiency and justify the economics of the investment, this extra energy must be consumed at the site. Among many other initiatives, Fibre Excellence plans to enhance pulp quality through improved washing operations. To remove the excess water created in the black liquor, Veolia supplies HPD® falling film, double-effect evaporators at the pre-evaporation phase. Additionally, in order to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency of the recovery boiler, the final solids concentration of the black liquor will be raised up to 75% through an HPD® forced-circulation enhanced high-solids concentrator (EHSC). Both the pre-evaporation and forced circulation concentration phases are integrated into the mill operations using the excess energy generated through the installation of the new turbine.

The award is a reaffirmation of Fibre Excellence’s confidence in Veolia which provided the existing evaporation plant a few decades ago. The new package is integrated with a more efficient stripping column that removes up to 96% of methanol and helps to reduce volatile pollutants.

Veolia Water Technologies Inc. has been awarded a contract by Smurfit Kappa to supply state-of-the-art HPD® systems at the Sangüesa mill in Northern Spain.

Smurfit Kappa is one of the world’s largest packaging goods providers and kraft paper manufacturers. Through its mill located in Sangüesa in the foothills of the Pyrenees in the northern Spanish province of Navarra, Smurfit Kappa provides the raw materials for producers of paper bags. Paper-based carrier bags provide a sustainable alternative to consumers’ use of plastic bags of which only less than 1% is recycled every year.

203 2031955 veolia logo veolia.pngTo increase its liquor treatment capacity and optimize the efficiency of recovery boiler operations, Smurfit Kappa Sangüesa has selected Veolia Water Technologies for the engineering, supply and mechanical installation of an HPD® concentration and evaporation system resulting in an upgrade of around 30% of present operations.

Critical to meeting the objectives of minimizing asset downtime, Veolia’s solution provided a forced-circulation low energy concentrator. Thanks to recent innovations in its design, this unit has minimal washing needs which create no disruption of production while achieving designed production rates. This competitive new design of the concentrator and peripheral equipment also addressed the need for a solution within constrained space requirements. With minimal recirculation piping, structural steel, and civil works, the concentrator has a reduced footprint that lowers overall site construction costs.

Veolia’s solution, which also includes two falling film evaporators with preheaters, condensers and a new vacuum system, will enhance the chemical recovery process by raising the liquor concentration up to 72% dry solids (virgin) to the recovery boiler while producing high-quality condensate for reuse leading to water conservation. The need for reduced energy consumption was also met through lower steam demands thanks to a design adapted to minimize fouling, foaming and scaling which increase heat transfer efficiencies in comparison with other alternative technologies.

Veolia,  through  its  subsidiary  Veolia  Water  Technologies  Brazil,  was  awarded  a contract to build three units for demineralized water production, raw water treatment and effluent treatment at Fibria’s new pulp production line located in Três Lagoas in Mato Grosso do Sul, a central western state of Brazil.

veolia water logoFibria is a Brazilian forest-based company and world leader in eucalyptus pulp production. The 26-month EPC contract signed with Veolia is for Project Horizonte 2, which involves the construction, at the Três Lagoas Unit, of a second production line with annual pulp capacity of 1.75 million tons. After the expansion, whose start up is expected in the fourth quarter of 2017, the Mato Grosso do Sul unit will reach full annual production capacity of 3.05 million tons of pulp. As a result, Fibria’s total annual pulp production capacity, considering all of its units, will increase from the current 5.3 million tons to over 7 million tons. Fibria's total investment in the expansion of Três Lagoas is equivalent to about $ 2.5 billion.

Veolia will design and build the three water treatment units using cutting-edge, patented Veolia processes. The first unit will use reverse osmosis and condensate polishing to produce 16,600 m3/d of demineralized water to supply the boilers. The second unit will feature the Actiflo® high rate clarification process combined with TGV filters to treat 185,000 m3/d of raw water before it is used in the pulp production process. Finally, the effluents from the pulp plant will go to a third unit where the AnoxKaldnes™ BAS™ process will be used to treat 166,000 m3/d of wastewater. This last unit will be designed by Veolia business unit Aquaflow who is specialized in effluent treatment for the pulp & paper industry.

The effluent treatment plant was designed to comply with the most stringent environmental standards enforced in Mato Grosso do Sul, ensuring that the discharged water meets the highest levels of quality. All three water treatment units are to be equipped with processes known for providing efficient, stable and robust treatment in a small footprint, reducing construction costs.
