Amaco Group, the leading manufacturer of Tissue paper Converting machines, held the activities of the "Open House", which it organizes periodically in Sidon, to meet partners, specialists and experts and to review its latest innovations, solutions and technologies.

Official figures, leaders from the private sector, experts in the Tissue paper industry, as well as major customers of Amaco and its partners from Lebanon and the world participated in this event.

During the open exhibition, which lasted for several days, AMACO Group welcomed the Director General of the Ministry of Economy, Dr. Mohammad Abu Haidar, President of the Chamber of Commerce Industry and Agriculture in Sidon and the South, Mohammad Saleh, and some Chamber board members, with some Tissue Paper converting companies from Lebanon and the region.

During the Open House, AMACO's guests visited various departments of the company, where they were briefed on the high standards used in the industrial process, and also inspected the machines that AMACO provides to the local, regional and international markets.

A technical team from Amaco provided detailed explanations about the Tissue paper converting machines that are manufactured, and the approved modern technologies that lead to the provision of industrial machines with international specifications, in addition to their production capabilities and the quality standards used in production.

Then the guests were briefed on the company's business model, which includes a work system dedicated to the after-sales stage, and the importance of this section, given that it is responsible for the proper work of the company's machines after the sale, as well as that it is based on an integrated work system that provides very distinctive capabilities at the level of technical support , this section also provides consultations to clients that allow the business sustainability of clients in various circumstances.

Explanations were also given about departments such as sales and customer relationship management in AMACO, which is responsible for achieving the highest levels of customer satisfaction, through a well-thought-out work system.

The company's work team also touched on the spare parts department, and the digital support channels that are adopted to meet the needs of customers at a high speed.

Metsä Tissue's, part of Metsä Group, renewed the tissue paper machine at the Mänttä mill and has moved from the trial run phase to continuous production. The renewed paper machine will be used to produce fresh fibre-based tissue paper products, especially for the Finnish market. The upgrade will increase the production capacity of the tissue paper machine by 15 per cent, as well as improve product quality and energy and production efficiency.

The renewal is an investment in increasing the production and improving the quality properties of Lambi, Serla and Katrin tissue paper products manufactured locally in Mänttä. The first products were trialled in June and the softness and strength of the paper have further improved. The new technology also enables tissue paper to be produced more energy-efficiently than before. The main machine supplier for the renewal was Valmet.

"Tissue papers which are familiar to consumers’ everyday life are products that are important to the society’s security of supply. The renewal of the tissue machine enables us to increase production and at the same time take an important step toward fossil-free production. Development work on the renewal continues and I believe we will achieve the benefits we are aiming for and beyond. Our energy consumption will be reduced by around 15 per cent per tonne of paper produced, leading to lower carbon dioxide emissions in line with our sustainability targets. In addition to increased production capacity and better paper quality, also our occupational safety will improve," says Kari Karttunen, VP of Production of the Mänttä mill.

This is the third Advantage ViscoNip rebuild project that Valmet and Metsä Tissue have done together, and the cooperation has been very good in all projects. Metsä Tissue's strategy is to serve customers close to the markets with sustainably produced hygiene tissues and solutions. The main raw material used in tissue paper products is renewable northern wood, fresh fibre, which is pure, high quality and gives tissue paper good strength and softness properties.

Metsä Tissue's Mänttä mill produces Serla, Lambi and Katrin tissue paper products and customers' own brands as well as SAGA baking paper products. The mill has three tissue machines, one greaseproof paper machine and 11 tissue converting lines.

The Australian packaging market is set to witness a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.7% from 47.6 billion units in 2021 to 51.9 billion units in 2026, led by an increase in demand for paper & board in packaging, predicts GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s latest report, “Australia Packaging Market Size, Analysing Key Pack Material (Pack Type, Closure Material and Type, Primary Outer Material and Type), Innovations and Forecast, 2021-2026,” reveals that glass accounted for the maximum share of 32.7% in the Australian packaging market in 2021 and will continue to dominate through the forecast period. Flexible packaging and rigid plastic occupied a share of 21.4% each in 2021.

Biswarup Bose, Consumer Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Apart from its premium appeal, recyclability contributes to glass’ significant usage in packaging. Growing environmental awareness is leading consumers to switch to sustainable packaging formats, such as paper & board packaging. According to the report, the food industry in Australia is the primary user of packaging materials accounting for a 38.8% share in 2021. Within the food industry, flexible packaging was the most widely used pack material, followed by rigid plastics.

During 2021–26, paper & board packaging is expected to record the highest growth at a CAGR of 3.4%. Growth in paper & board pack material can be attributed to its light weight, economical nature, recyclability, availability in several forms, and user-friendly factors.

Bose concludes: “Recyclability and lightweight characteristics are set to propel the demand for paper & board package. Upgrades will substantially reduce lead times and improve plant safety  

AGE Industries, Ltd, a leading supplier of custom paper tubes, innovative packaging and shipping solutions, announces the addition of two flexo /folder/gluers, two unitizers, one automated stitcher, and one new scrap handling system to its Texas plants that will increase efficiency, improve throughput at each shift, and reduce forklift handling operations to create a safer work environment. Positioning itself for the future, AGE Industries is investing in equipment that will help manufacturers meet the challenges posed by increasing freight, raw material, and labor costs.

The addition of the 37” Flexo folder gluers will significantly increase open capacity, enable faster production, and reduce lead times. These two-color flexo’s features a full rotary die cut section and are rated to run 18,000 boxes an hour with a 3-person crew, reducing headcount while increasing efficiency by nine times compared to its old printer slotters. Each new Flexo can comfortably convert an additional two tractor trailer loads of product per shift. With its die cutting capability, the Flexo facilitates running specialty boxes in one pass, unlike competitors that must use two different machines.  

Also added are 4-head Signode unitizers, which can compress and strap units at a rate of 40+ units per hour – more than a tractor trailer per hour – all while moving product safely through plants. What took the prior 2-person manual strapping process 10 to 15 minutes can now be done in under 30 seconds with one person. The new equipment also provides a more consistent and tightly strapped product with a better presentation, so customers can easily double stack them in warehouses. AGE has fully conveyorized two of its plants, so products can be taken from the end of the machines it is being manufactured on all the way to the unitizer, reducing the need for forklifts to handle material on the plant floor and creating a safer environment. 

AGE has also added a new automated stitching machine that measures the spacing for each staple on a box, automatically adjusting staple length for the type of material being stitched. This machine can produce roughly double the number of boxes as other manual equipment. Finally, AGE has added a new scrap handling system for corrugated and paper scrap generated. All scrap is now moved by conveyor over to a horizontal baler, reducing the time needed to produce scrap bales and eliminating the need to shut down machines to remove scrap bales. 

Next to be added will be an Eberle tube cutting machine, which can cut 88 cycles per minute. The new machine will allow the tube division to use a blade cut, which eliminates particulates while meeting tolerances of three-thousandths of an inch.

Simply put, certification labels are a quick and easy way to tell consumers that the wood fiber in the paper products they buy and use comes from sustainably managed forests. The certification systems behind those labels provide the proof that’s true.

Certification is a voluntary, market-based incentive system that’s implemented through two separate but linked processes: sustainable forest management certification and chain of custody certification.

Forest Management Certification

The United Nations describes sustainable forest management as a “dynamic and evolving concept that aims to maintain and enhance the economic, social and environmental value of forests for the benefit of present and future generations.” Forest certification, which covers the certification of actual forestland, assures that forests are responsibly managed in line with challenging environmental, social and economic requirements.

This certification involves a voluntary process in which an independent, accredited third-party auditor conducts an onsite assessment to determine the quality of forest management against these requirements, typically referred to as forest management standards. These forest management standards are developed in an open, transparent process by a public or private certification organization and are adapted to local context to reflect different forest types and cultural considerations in different regions of the world.

Forest management certification is issued to a forest owner or manager who is assessed to be managing forests according to the standards. Often times, auditors request that land owners make changes in their management practices to better conform to the certification standard before certification is awarded. Landowners and land managers who have completed a successful audit can then make claims their forests are certified to these standards, and sell wood fiber off their land as certified. A summary of certification audit findings is made publicly available in support of these claims.

Forest certification increases the value of forests by building consumer trust, which in turn creates additional demand for forest products like paper and paper-based packaging. Creating additional value and demand for these products is one of the best ways to keep forests standing because it prevents them from being permanently cleared for alternative land uses like urban development.

Chain of Custody Certification

Chain of custody (CoC) certification tracks forest-based products from sustainable forests to the final product. It demonstrates that each step of the supply chain is closely monitored through independent auditing to ensure that unsustainable fiber sources are excluded. Chain of custody certification is available to those who process or trade certified wood products, such as manufacturers, mills, paper merchants, converters, printers, wood dealers, wood yards, wholesalers and brokers.

A CoC system, coupled with a product label identifying the certification system, helps consumers make informed choices by verifying that any paper or paper-based packaging labeled “certified” was produced with wood from a sustainably managed forest.

Forest Certification Standards

While there are dozens of different forest certification standards in use around the world, they share many of the same basic objectives. All demonstrate an additional measure of commitment to sustainable forestry and are effective mechanisms for encouraging and expanding a responsible marketplace for print, paper and paper-based packaging.

The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification™ (PEFC™) standards account for the vast majority of certified forests and chain-of-custody certificates around the world.

Forest certification programs operate at a national or regional level. An important mission of PEFC™ is to evaluate and endorse national and regional standards, such as the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) standard available in the United States and Canada, and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standard.

Over 770 million acres (312 million hectares) are managed in compliance with PEFC’s™ internationally accepted sustainability benchmarks. Three quarters of all certified forests globally are certified to PEFC™ standards. PEFC™ has 55 national members and 50 endorsed national certification systems around the world. 750,000 forest owners are PEFC™ certified globally. Approximately 13,000 PEFC™ chain-of-custody certificates have been issued globally, with 253 in the United States and 176 in Canada.

In North America, the growth of SFI® forest management certification leads all other standards with more than 375 million acres (150 million hectares) certified. Among the SFI® Forest Management Standard’s requirements are measures to protect water quality, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, species at risk, the rights of indigenous peoples, workers’ rights (including gender equity), and forests with exceptional conservation value. SFI® accounts for nearly 35% of global certified forests and 46% of PEFC™ certifications worldwide.

FSC® forest management certification confirms that the forest is being managed in a way that preserves biological diversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers while ensuring it sustains economic viability. Approximately 533 million acres (216 million hectares) globally are certified to the FSC® standard, with 37 million acres (15 million hectares) certified in the United States and 121 million acres (49 million hectares) certified in Canada. Approximately 52,000 FSC® chain of custody certificates have been issued globally, with 2,143 issued in the United States and 508 in Canada.

Global Certification Status

According to UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s most recent Global Forest Resources Assessment (2020), approximately 11% of the world’s forestland – about 1 billion acres (426 million hectares) – is certified, with the majority of certified forestland in North America and Europe. This is net certified area, owing to the fact that some forests are certified to more than one standard. Canada has by far the most with 413 million acres (167 million hectares) certified, followed by Russia with 133 million acres (54.1 million hectares) and the United States with 94 million acres (38 million hectares). These three countries together account for more than 60% of the world’s certified forest area.

International technology group ANDRITZ will be presenting its innovative technologies for sustainable paper production at MIAC 2022, booth #72, in Lucca, Italy, October 12-14, 2022.

SHOWCASING SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS AT THE ANDRITZ BOOTH

To meet the requirements resulting from the constantly increasing amounts of rejects in RCF material, ANDRITZ offers the PrimeSolve LC system. The main advantages are the reduction of fiber losses and the optimized removal of rejects. In addition, significant energy savings can be achieved through a new design of the pulper and detrashing pump. It also has an influence on product quality and allows for a higher reject amount in wastepaper.

In the field of lightweight packaging paper grades, ANDRITZ offers the EDC Forming Fabrics design, a specific solution that allows utilizing a wide production window on sophisticated paper machines. Using case studies, ANDRITZ will show how the EDC Forming Fabric solutions help to improve machine efficiency maintaining stable machine operation with less water and fiber carryover. As a result, the cleanliness of the machine improves and brake risks of paper sheets are reduced. Better dewatering efficiency at reduced vacuum levels allows a cost-efficient operation. The improved retention and paper sheet strength results in lower retention agent and chemical consumption and offers further significant advantages for efficient energy and raw material use.

Regarding savings solutions, the focus is on innovative digitization solutions via the manufacturing process. One example is Fiber GPS. It is a kind of digital twin for the refining in the stock preparation area. Goal of the digital twin or simulation based on the Metris IDEAS application is to model paper quality parameters such as burst strength and tensile strength after stock preparation with the existing refiner equipment. The benefits for the customer are savings due to the usage of more wastepaper instead of expensive fresh fiber and an increase in production as fresh fiber is limited. Stabilization of all control loops also leads to a more stable operation of the paper machine.
