About Zanders Paper

The portfolio includes high‐gloss label papers and premium board qualities of the traditional brand Chromolux, one of the world's leading paper brands, as well as high quality variants with extra smooth or naturally napped surfaces. These include Zanlabel label papers and Zanpack packaging board qualities.
Especially designed for digital printing, Zanders Paper offers the premium range of Chromolux digital and Silver digital brands as well as Zanjet, a double‐sided coated paper for commercial high‐ speed inkjet printing.
The portfolio is rounded off by Zanbarrier, the barrier paper for flexible food packaging, which is available in the variants Zanbarrier OGR (Oil and Grease Resistant) and Zanbarrier NGR (Natural Grease Resistant – a barrier function completely without fluorocarbon or other chemicals).
The company's customers are manufacturers of beverages such as spirits; sparkling wine, wine, beer or water, food and luxury foods, tobacco products, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.
New apprentices at Gohrsmuehle mill
Zanders continues to invest in its personal future and welcomes six new employees at the beginning of the new training year: two apprentices each will learn the professions of paper technologist, mechatronics engineer and machine and plant operator at Gohrsmühle mill.
Zanders is offering the apprenticeship as a machine and plant operator for the first time in order to make the training offer more attractive and flexible.
Thomas Döring, Head of Human Resources at Zanders: "The aim of the new training is to arouse the interest of young people who were previously not interested in working for a paper producer. In addition to the industry-specific paper technologist, with the mechatronics engineer and the machine and plant operator we can now offer two trainings, which will open up new perspectives for young people."
The application process for 2019 has already begun and in all three apprenticeships there are several places to be allocated, said Döring.

Zanders is a German manufacturer of high-quality special papers and cartons for labels, packaging and graphic applications. Founded in 1829 by Johann Wilhelm Zanders in Bergisch Gladbach, the company still operates the Gohrsmühle paper mill thanks to around 500 loyal employees. Zanders launches flexible oil and grease resistant packaging paper
Zanders has developed the flexible food contact paper Zanbarrier OGR specially for products containing fat, primarily in the food domain, and will be presenting it for the first time at the FachPack 2016 trade fair. Zanbarrier OGR is uncoated, resistant to oil and grease and moisture-proof. It is suitable for fast food packaging such as kebab or French fry wrappers, for butter wrapping, as release paper for fatty and moist food products or as lamination on pizza and bakery boxes, for example.
In addition to the OGR variant, Zanders is working on further barriers, including those dedicated for use with mineral oils, water and steam, or as aroma protection. “Our decades of experience in the use of high-performance technologies for surface treatments has enabled us to test and implement all different kinds of barriers”, explains Jakob Jonsson, Sales Director at Zanders. “We can provide our customers with flexible and targeted solutions for their individual needs. With our high-performance barrier papers, we offer an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic packaging.”
With its barrier papers, Zanders rounds off the product range of flexible packaging paper which also includes the lightly waterproof, machine-smoothed natural paper Zankraft MF in matte, silk and gloss versions as well as the Zanflex one-side coated qualities with a shiny surface. As fresh fibre papers, all packaging papers stand out due to their high level of purity and safety, thus making them ideally suited for the packaging of food such as cereals, sugar, flour, baking and confectionery goods, as well as soup packets or individually wrapped tea bags. Furthermore, they can be successfully deployed as packaging for pet food or tobacco goods, as gift wrapping paper, for shopping bags or for laminations. In common with the entire product portfolio, all flexible packaging papers from Zanders are sustainably produced and are FSC-certified. They are also recyclable and compostable.
Zanders – the expert in high quality speciality papers and boards launches new appearance
Following its acquisition by mutares AG, Zanders GmbH, the expert in high quality speciality paper and board for labels, packaging and graphical applications, has launched a new corporate design and expressive logo. The company, based in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, is also planning to promote its products and expertise more vigorously in the future to a wider global market.
Zanders' Gohrsmühle paper mill in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, was founded in 1829
The new Zanders logo expresses the essence of the company: a white "Z" for Zanders is emblazoned on a dark circular background that symbolises a roll of paper, illustrating its focus on papermaking. Below this letter, three horizontal white lines, representing sheets of paper, emphasise the basis for the success of the company. "Zanders, the papermakers" is the new corporate slogan. It spells out that this paper factory, with its rich tradition, continues to be sustained by its employees - the "papermakers" - and their special form of expertise.
The Zanders paper mill remained in the hands of the Zanders family for around 150 years. Constantly growing, Zanders expanded its production at the Gohrsmühle mill into art paper in 1895 and introduced Chromolux in 1958. Following its listing on the stock exchange in 1980, Zanders AG was acquired by the Finnish fresh forest fibre paper and board manufacturer Metsä Board (formerly M-real) in 2001, and renamed Metsä Board Zanders GmbH in 2012. In May 2015, Munich-based holding company mutares AG acquired the company, which once again produces its high quality grades of paper under the name of Zanders GmbH.
The new look heralds Zanders’ move to expand in a wider global market, offering its expertise in high quality speciality paper and board for labels, packaging and graphical applications to brand owners, packaging manufacturers and printers.
Its range encompasses high-gloss finished label papers and premium board grades in the traditional Chromolux brand, as well as the Zanlabel brand added to its portfolio as a cost-effective solution in 2014. This includes Zanlabel gloss and Zanlabel touch label papers, with a particularly smooth and naturally uncoated surface respectively. Zanders also offers the flexible packaging paper Zanflex, and the Silver digital premium paper range designed for digital printing. Zanders exclusively uses raw materials from sustainably cultivated forestry operations and therefore fulfills the FSC requirements.
Zanders provides specialised solutions for a wide variety of segments while consistently maintaining the highest quality in terms of technical characteristics and finishing options, as well as product safety. It meets the requirements of manufacturers of beverages, including spirits, sparkling wine, wine, water and beer; grocery and luxury food products; tobacco products, as well as pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Its potential end-uses range from high-end to standard products, including specialised segments such as individual craft beer breweries.

mutares successfully closed the acquisition of Metsä Board Zanders
The Munich-based mutares Group (ISIN: DE000A0SMSH2) closed the acquisition of Metsä Board Zanders, following the approval of the antitrust authorities. While this acquisition forms an important milestone for the growth of the group, the transaction pipeline of mutares remains well filled.
The German producer of premium paper is operating again under its previous name Zanders which has a very well-known history in the paper industry. In 2014, the company employed approximately 480 employees generating sales of EUR 93 million. The mill was sold to mutares by the Finnish paper and board manufacturer Metsä Board.
The Gohrsmühle mill located at the company’s headquarters in Bergisch Gladbach has an annual production capacity of 325.000 tons of paper. Based on its high-quality fine papers and thanks to the globally well-known brand “Chromolux”, Zanders has established a strong position in the market for specialty papers. This is reflected by the wide range of different customers from the consumer and luxury goods industry.
The future strategy for Zanders is based on a sustainable strengthening of core competencies and the further expansion of its market position with the goal to access new international customer potential. In addition, the production and logistics processes will be further optimized.
Axel Geuer, CEO of mutares, comments: “With the successful acquisition of Zanders, mutares continues its ambitious growth path. This year we still expect three additional acquisitions.”
