International technology Group ANDRITZ has successfully started up the rebuilt PM10 at Laakirchen paper mill for the Heinzel Group, Austria. The machine that originally produced SC paper was converted to a fluting and testliner machine producing basis weights ranging from 70 to 140 g/m² based on recycled fibers. With a design speed of 1,600 m/min and a working width of 7,500 mm, it is now one of the world’s most productive paper machines for fluting and testliners.

“We have implemented a comprehensive investment package for our paper mill in Laakirchen. The heart of this package is the PM10 rebuild. The new ANDRITZ technology enables production at the highest quality level. In addition to our PM11, which will continue producing paper for the high-quality SC market, the PM10 produces 450,000 t/y of fluting and testliners,” says Thomas Welt, Production Director at Laakirchen Papier AG.

In the stock preparation section, the ANDRITZ scope of supply comprises a complete OCC line with a capacity of 1,350 t/d, rebuild of the existing paper machine approach flow system, as well as sludge and reject handling. The pulping system with detrashing includes a 130 m³ FibreSolve FSR pulper, which is the largest low-consistency pulper ANDRITZ has ever installed in Europe.

The rebuilt paper machine features a PrimeFlow TW double-layer headbox with PrimeProfiler F consistency profiling system. This headbox enables best surface profiles at maximum production flexibility with the stiff separating lamella between the layers. The new PrimeForm TW gap former with a specially designed forming suction roll for higher dewatering capacity gently dewaters the web and ensures high retention rates. Forming shoes at both the top and bottom ensure optimized dewatering within a broad operating window. In combination with the PrimeFilm Sizer unit, high strength is achieved in the end product.

In the first drying group, PrimeRun Evo web stabilizers were installed to improve the runnability of the machine after the press section. PrimeRun Evo web stabilizers are high-vacuum boxes with three different vacuum zones in one box. Thus, the web can be removed carefully from the surface of the drying cylinder. In addition, PrimeRun Duo web stabilizers were installed in the existing pre-drying section and in the new after-drying section to enable an even web run throughout the drying section.

Instead of cast iron cylinders, PrimeDry Steel cylinders are used to achieve the targeted production capacities. They provide up to 7% more drying capacity compared to same-sized cast iron cylinders at the same operating pressure and thus enable either increased production or reduced energy consumption within the space available. In addition, a new air system including heat recovery for the rebuilt drying section was installed to provide energy-efficient paper production.

The new PrimeFilm Sizer applies surface starch to both sides of the paper web simultaneously to achieve the requested strength values. This starch application technology was installed due to the high speed of the machine. The PrimeAir Glide air-turn and the PrimeFeeder tail threading system result in gentle web turning and reliable and fast tail threading.

The scope of supply further includes the entire basic process engineering as well as the complete PrimeControl automation package.

This order once again confirms the strong business relationship between ANDRITZ and the Heinzel Group. ANDRITZ has already started up Europe’s largest new MG paper machine (PM2) successfully at the Pöls mill as well as a new black liquor recovery boiler plant.

International technology Group ANDRITZ has received an order from Sappi Saiccor to supply a baling line with bale tracking for its mill in Saiccor, South Africa. Start-up is scheduled for 2018.

Although there is limited space available, no new building is necessary due to the special space-saving design of the ANDRITZ baling line.

This order once again endorses the excellent cooperation between Sappi Saiccor and ANDRITZ. Only recently, ANDRITZ was awarded an order to supply a new headbox and rebuild the pulp dryer to increase the capacity at the Saiccor mill.

Situated 50 km south of the port of Durban in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, the Saiccor mill is one of the production facilities for Sappi Specialized Cellulose. The mill has the capacity to produce approximately 800,000 tons of elemental chlorine free (ECF) dissolving wood pulp (DWP) per annum, mostly for the export market. With the Saiccor mill, the Ngodwana Mill (also in South Africa), and the Cloquet Mill (North America), Sappi Specialized Cellulose is the world’s largest manufacturer of DWP.

International technology Group ANDRITZ has received an order from Iggesund Paperboard AB, a member of the HOLMEN GROUP, to supply a new evaporation plant and rebuild an existing evaporation plant for the pulp mill in Iggesund.

Start-up of the new plant is scheduled for the second quarter of 2019 and of the rebuild for the fourth quarter of 2019.

The new 7-effect high dry solids evaporation plant will have a capacity of 350 t/h evaporated water. It will replace an old ANDRITZ evaporation line from the 1970’s and significantly enhance energy efficiency at the Iggesund mill. The state-of-the-art technology of the evaporation plant will improve the cleanliness of the condensates produced, which are reused in other processes in the pulp mill.

The existing evaporation plant will be rebuilt and upgraded to 220 t/h with modern ANDRITZ lamella technology in effects 1 and 2 in order to meet and exceed the plant’s original design data.

ANDRITZ’s lamella technology ensures the desired steam economy at all times, reduced energy consumption by circulation pumps, as well as higher black liquor concentration and stability, thus leading to increased and stabilized power production in the recovery boiler. It also provides optimized vapor condensate quality that contributes towards lower energy and chemical consumption. This reduces the mill’s operational costs. In addition, shorter and fewer washing cycles enhance the overall availability and production.

International technology Group ANDRITZ has successfully started up the TM6 tissue machine delivered to Guizhou Chitianhua Paper Industry Co., Ltd. (Taison Group), Guizhou Province, China. The new PrimeLineST tissue machine, with a design speed of 2,000 m/min and a paper width of 5.6 meters, will produce high-quality facial wipes and toilet paper, as well as paper tissues based on bamboo furnish. This delivery follows the supply of TM5, which was started up successfully at Guizhou Chitianhua’s location in Chishui in September 2016.

Like the TM5, the TM6 is currently unique on the Asian market because it combines a high-performance Yankee with a steam-heated hood. The PrimeDry Steel Yankee is made entirely of steel, has a diameter of 20 feet, and hence is among the largest in the world. The combination of steam-heated hood and steel Yankee enables a high drying capacity and achieves remarkable cost savings compared to systems operated with gas because it uses steam. The steel Yankee’s evaporation rate is 15-20% higher than cast-iron models, which results in 8-10% better machine performance.

“The two high-speed tissue machines from ANDRITZ contribute to a substantial reduction in operating costs compared to traditional concepts due to their innovative, energy-saving solutions. Moreover, with the large steel Yankees we produce high-quality tissue paper at high speed from the mill’s own bamboo pulp,” says Wu Mingxi, President of the Taison Group.

International technology Group ANDRITZ has successfully started up another upgraded screw press installed at the Joutseno mill of Metsä Board, Finland. This upgrade follows a separate screw press rebuild for Metsä Board Joutseno that was completed successfully in late 2016.

The rebuild of both screw presses (#21 and #22) included installation of a new Low-Energy Screw Shaft (LESS) as well as split grooved baskets for the medium-pressure zone in order to widen the operating window of the presses and allow higher production rates. The design of the LESS enables a new compression curve, resulting in a higher throughput at the same installed power.

The screw press upgrades are part of the step-by-step optimization of the BCTMP (bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp) process that is currently in progress, with the overall aim of improving the availability of the plant. Press #21 is used as a wash press, and press #22 acts as a secondary stage in the washing process.

Fibria’s new pulp mill has a production capacity of 1.95 million tons of eucalyptus pulp per year. Combined with the existing mill at Três Lagoas the total production capacity reaches 3.25 million tons per year, thus making Três Lagoas one of the largest pulp production sites in the world.

With this successful EPC delivery and smooth start-up of the equipment, ANDRITZ has once again demonstrated its outstanding technological capabilities and its proven experience in handling very large projects.

  • A complete wood processing plant with four chipping lines each consisting of the world’s biggest horizontally fed HHQ-Chippers with a capacity of 400 m3 solid-under-bark per hour. The scope also includes the chip screening station, chip storage with a round pile stacker-reclaimer, which also provides chips to the first pulp production line, and bark handling. The unique HHQ-Chipper contributes towards providing the highest and most uniform chip quality, which significantly increases fiber yield both in woodyard and in fiberline operations.
  • A hardwood fiberline comprising a chip feed system, LoSolids continuous cooking, screen room and bleaching, and eight DD-Washers, which ensure low operating costs, low emissions, extremely high washing efficiency, and excellent fiber quality. The capacity (6,120 adt/d) is the highest in the world for a single fiberline.
  • Two energy-efficient pulp drying lines (working width of 8,004 mm and capacity of 3,060 adt/d each) based on the high-capacity Twin Wire Former technology, air borne dryers, cutter-layboy, and five baling lines. The approach system includes a full cascade screening plant and ensures homogeneous pulp feed to the subsequent process stage. The pulp dewatering machine comprises a dilution-controlled headbox, Twin Wire Former, and press section with combi-press and shoe press. The drying plant is designed for a specific plant capacity of more than 380 tons per day and meter of working width, which has been very well proven for ANDRITZ pulp drying plants all over the world. The ANDRITZ airborne dryer is the most energy efficient of its kind. The reliable ANDRITZ cutter-layboy provides the pulp bales to be further processed in the high capacity baling lines, where the final pulp bales are produced.
  • The largest black liquor evaporation plant in the western hemisphere (evaporation rate 1,950 t/h), which concentrates black liquor to a dry solids content of 80% for efficient combustion in the HERB recovery boiler. The plant is equipped with the latest of ANDRITZ’s innovations in secondary condensate quality enhancement for 100% reuse in other departments of the mill. Furthermore, the evaporation plant is integrated with the recovery boiler, which has an energy-efficient boiler feed water heating system.
  • The largest recovery boiler in Latin America with a peak capacity of 8,250 tds/d. The ANDRITZ HERB recovery boiler is equipped with state-of-the-art combustion technology to minimize the emissions and maximize green energy production. It is capable of burning and destroying all the harmful non-condensable gases and the methanol produced in other process areas of the mill. The HERB recovery boiler supports and provides steam and power for the complete pulp mill and generates a large electricity surplus, which is to be distributed through the national grid.
  • Energy-efficient and largest white liquor plant in the world (18,900 m3/d white liquor production), which meets the highest environmental standards and provides top performance and excellent availability under any process conditions. The white liquor plant consists of the single-line recausticizing plant and two lime kilns (840 t/d each), designed to burn oil, natural gas, and syngas.
  • In addition, ANDRITZ has delivered a chloride and potassium removal system to enhance the chemical recovery process and a liquid methanol plant for production of biofuel.

International technology group ANDRITZ has received the order from Marubeni, Tokyo, Japan, to supply an EcoFluid fluidized bed boiler with flue gas cleaning system for a waste-to-energy power plant at SCG Packaging’s Ban Pong paper mill, located in Ratchaburi, Thailand. The equipment and technologies supplied by ANDRITZ will be used to generate electricity from thermal utilization of residue occurring in production operations using a recycled paper furnish. Start-up is scheduled for the third quarter of 2018.

International technology Group ANDRITZ will officially open the world’s most modern research and development center for tissue, the PrimeLineTIAC Tissue Innovation and Application Center, at its Graz location in March 2018. Final test runs are currently in progress.

The research center comprises a complete, state-of-the-art tissue production line, including laboratory facilities for tests and trials to develop new products and processes in the tissue sector. It is available to tissue producers and to suppliers, research and development companies, and universities. Thus, customers and developers can conduct tests and trials under many different conditions, for example to optimize fibers and furnish for a specific product, improve product qualities, increase dryness, and reduce energy consumption. The impact of variables such as stock preparation, chemicals, vacuum, machine clothing, pressing, and drying with hot air and steam can all be measured and evaluated accurately. ANDRITZ experts from R&D and from the stock preparation, machine design and engineering, automation, and pumps departments are available for collaboration and discussions if requested, however customers can also bring along their own team of specialists.

The PrimeLineTIAC has its own complete stock preparation line together with the approach flow system. Many different kinds of pulp can be processed in one production line, which is split into a separate short fiber and long fiber line. In addition, all units are available in small industrial scale, creating an excellent environment for best possible fiber treatment and tests according to the individual needs of customers and products.

The tissue production line offers utmost flexibility for the production of conventional, textured, and structured (TAD) tissue. It features eight configurations that are also available on the market as single-machine concepts. So customers can run extensive trials with what could potentially be their future machine configurations. With a design speed of 2,500 m/min and a sheet width of 600 mm, the machine can be operated with either a suction press roll or a shoe press, a regular CrescentFormer or a vertical CrescentFormer, and with a 16 ft. steel Yankee or two 14 ft. TAD drums.

The PrimeControl automation hardware and software developed by ANDRITZ provides utmost flexibility in monitoring and controlling the eight machine configurations as well as the stock preparation system, including alarm management, online documentation, and eco-monitoring for example.

The pumping systems are highly automated and are monitored in such a way as to not only control operations, but also gather and report important process data under different operating conditions.

ANDRITZ collaborated with many key partners on this project, including Albany International Corp., Danfoss Drives, Fibria, IBS Paper Performance Group, Nash, Södra, and Solenis. International technology Group ANDRITZ has successfully completed start-up of the key production technologies for Metsä Group’s new bioproduct pulp mill with an annual capacity of 1.3°million tons of pulp in Äänekoski, Finland. All ANDRITZ processes were started up successfully according to the agreed schedules. The core equipment supplied by ANDRITZ originates mainly from Finland, with a significant part being fabricated at the ANDRITZ workshop in Savonlinna.

logo andritz list ppWith the installation and smooth start-up of the equipment supplied, ANDRITZ once again demonstrated its outstanding technological capabilities. ANDRITZ supplied the following equipment to Metsä Group’s bioproduct pulp mill:

  • a wood processing plant, including three debarking and chipping lines, with the highest capacity in the world (pine/spruce/birch: 470/350/270 m3solid-over-bark per hour)
  • a flexible softwood/hardwood fiberline with the highest softwood capacity in the world (3,900 tons per day)
  • the world’s most energy-efficient black liquor evaporation with the highest capacity in Europe (1,650°tons/hour)
  • the largest recausticizing plant in Europe (white liquor production of 16,000 m3/day)

With this major delivery, ANDRITZ is once more strengthening its position as one of the world’s leading suppliers of key equipment for pulp mills.
