Intergraf takes on ERPC chairmanship
The European Recovered Paper Council (ERPC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Beatrice Klose as next chairperson. Ms Klose is the Secretary General of Intergraf - the European Association representing print and digital communications, one of the member organisations of the ERPC. She started her ERPC chairmanship on 1 January 2013 and will keep the position until end 2014.
The ERPC was set up after the successful launch of the first „European Declaration on Paper Recovery‟ as an industry owninitiative in November 2000 with the aim to monitor the progress made towards meeting the targets set out in the European Declaration. In 2011 the industry committed itself to meet and maintain a voluntary paper recycling rate target of 70% in EU 27 plus Switzerland and Norway by 2010, which is higher than in any other region in the world, and to pursue qualitative targets in areas such as waste prevention, ecodesign, and research and development.
“The ERPC has been very successful in boasting paper recovery and recycling rates and in improving the quality of paper for recycling in Europe. I intend to continue this line of work and to preserve the valuable contribution of the value chain to green growth and job creation in Europe”, said Ms Klose.
Ms Klose is 43 years old, of German origin and graduated with a double degree from the University of Osnabrück and the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce in Poitiers. Beatrice has lived and worked in Germany, the US, France and Belgium. Prior to her work at Intergraf she worked for the German company Mannesmann in their liaison office in Brussels.
Global consumers demand smarter packaging
Global consumers are guided by product packaging in their buying behaviour, not least in India. We reject products in plastic packaging and feel guilty when we throw away plastic water bottles. We worry about the amount of packaging consumed by society, and when shopping online we might consider having goods delivered in simple standard packaging instead of the original packaging if it makes them cheaper. These are the results of an international study by Innventia, Packaging 2020, carried out in association with Kairos Future.
The report describes seven global forces and their impact on the packaging industry and the packaging of the future. The conclusions are based on a survey carried out among consumers in the US, India and Sweden. A clear majority of the 1,500 interviewees see major problems with society’s consumption of packaging.
There are particular concerns about the environmental impact of packaging in India, where a full 60 percent are prepared to go so far as to avoid purchasing a specific product if the packaging is seen to be environmentally unfriendly. The corresponding figure in Sweden is 20 percent. Plastic packaging is deemed to be the biggest environmental villain among Americans and Indians, while it is mainly aluminium packaging that Swedes shy away from. There are demands for tougher quality controls and stricter environmental legislation, and a clear majority of consumers in all three countries would like to see somewhat stricter or much stricter environmental legislation.
Global consumers – particularly those in Sweden – are keen to see more innovative packaging. For example, three out of five (63 percent) would like to be able to scan goods to find out more about their origin and delivery, as well as detailed information about the content.
“A growing global middle class, an aging population, limited access to raw materials and intensified urbanisation are a few of the megatrends posing challenges for the product and packaging industry,” says Fredrik Rosén, Manager of the Market and Consumer Insight group at Innventia.
“We’re seeing purchasing decisions being guided by the packaging material itself, not just the appearance of the packaging. We’re also seeing a clear demand and a great need for smarter packaging. In the future, stricter demands will be placed on packaging materials that come into contact with foodstuffs. The growth in online shopping will bring both challenges and opportunities for the packaging industry. For example, will the brown cardboard boxes that products are usually shipped in today still be as brown and boring in the future, or will they become an important part of branding? When it comes to the packaging value chain, as the quest for high quality raw materials intensifies, recycling players will occupy a significantly stronger position. And it’s not unlikely that we’ll see structural collaboration, whereby recyclers become involved in other parts of the value chain.”

The report in figures:
- 56 percent of consumers in India say that recycling is extremely important to them, compared to 32 percent in Sweden and 37 percent in the US.
- When shopping online, 94 percent of Swedes would consider paying less for goods delivered in simple standard packaging instead of the original packaging.
- 20 percent of Swedish consumers worry very often about packaging containing harmful substances. The corresponding figure in India is 43 percent.
- In India, 50 percent think that much stricter environmental legislation is needed. In Sweden, 17 percent take the same view, while 43 percent think legislation should be somewhat stricter.
- 60 percent of consumers in India avoid purchasing goods if the packaging is perceived to be environmentally unfriendly. In Sweden, the figure is 20 percent.
- 8 percent of Swedes worry that food may have thawed out on its way to the shop. The corresponding figure in India is 77 percent.
- 65 percent of Swedish consumers think that plastic is the least environmentally friendly material, compared with 47 percent for aluminium and 4 percent for paper (multiple answers were possible). In India, 30 percent think that paper is the least environmentally friendly material.
- 80 percent of Swedes think that requiring consumers to wear plastic gloves when handling fruit in a food shop is a bad idea, but 65 percent of consumers in India think this is a very good idea.
- 29 percent of Americans buy food online at least once a month. The corresponding figures are 35 percent in India and 5 percent in Sweden.
- 81 percent of Americans over the age of 55 say that the most irritating thing about packaging is difficulties opening it.
- 63 percent of Swedes say that they would be interested or extremely interested in being able to scan goods to find out more about their origin and delivery, and/or detailed information about the content.
- 44 percent of Swedish consumers have chosen one product over another in the last month, simply because it has been produced locally. The corresponding figure in the US is 32 percent.
- 87 percent of Swedes taste milk before discarding it once it has passed its best before date.
About the survey
A quantitative survey was carried out in order to measure the attitudes, feelings and behaviours of the public in relation to the issues dealt with in the report. The survey was carried out in October 2012 using access panels with respondents in India, Sweden and the US. There were 500 respondents in each country, and the results were weighted to increase representativeness in terms of gender and age. Since the survey was carried out using internet panels, the Indian responses do not correspond to the population as a whole but rather to the Indian middle class, which was the intention of the survey.

Kemira strengthens global polymer product line, positioning for future growth
Kemira Oyj has announced that it has reached two milestones in the execution of its long-term growth path. Kemira signed a licensing agreement with geographical exclusivity with Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. for acrylamide manufacturing technology, and has completed a substantial capacity expansion for three sites in North America, increasing its manufacturing capacity by 60%. This will strengthen Kemira's polymer product line globally. Polymers are core to Kemira's water technology platform and also play a significant role in growing applications like water reuse, wastewater treatment, rheology control and shale fracturing.
The exclusive licensing agreement for acrylamide manufacturing technology signed with Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. enables Kemira to produce high-quality acrylamide monomer. Acrylamide is the key building block for polymers used in applications in the paper, oil, gas, and mining industries and in municipal water treatment. The proprietary acrylamide bio-process uses bio-catalysts, which reduce energy requirements in the manufacturing process when compared to using traditional copper catalysts.
In addition, Kemira has completed a two-year, multi-million euro capacity expansion project at its polymer production plants in North America, effective this month. This has resulted in a 60% increase in manufacturing capacity at the company's Mobile, Alabama; Columbus, Georgia; and Longview, Washington production sites.
"We view this proactive approach as an investment for our customers and in the industries Kemira serves," says Randy Owens, President, Kemira Oil & Mining. "We are excited about these steps that will support the growth of our business. With the new manufacturing technology we are able to reduce the environmental impact of our operations, while also meeting the challenging needs of our customers to improve efficiency, productivity and water management."

Metso's biomass-fired heating plant delivery will increase the production of green energy in line with Savon Voima's strategy
Metso will supply a biomass-fired heating plant for district heat production to Savon Voima Oyj in Leppävirta in Finland. Following the investment, the municipality of Leppävirta will have access to more district heat generated using renewable fuels, in accordance with Savon Voima's bioenergy program. The new heating plant will significantly reduce the consumption of oil. The plant will go on stream in late 2013. The value of the order is approximately EUR 9 million.
Metso's turnkey delivery will include process equipment and buildings as well as installation and construction work. The delivery will also include Metso's flue gas scrubber. Once completed, the plant will have a heat output of 8 MW and it will produce hot water for the district heating network of the municipality of Leppävirta. The plant will be fired by wood-based biomass sourced locally, such as forest residue and peat.
"We chose Metso as the supplier of our new plant because we have a long history of successful cooperation with Metso during previous plant deliveries, the latest of which was the delivery of a plant of the same size to Suonenjoki. Metso's solution also offered the best overall economy," says Savon Voima's Project Manager Hannu Lipsanen.
"We want to be a reliable partner in advancing Savon Voima's sustainable projects that use domestic fuel. The Leppävirta project is very important for us. We will supply a plant which will reduce the use of fossil fuels and provide an energy efficient solution for district heat production," confirms Teemu Koskela, in charge of the sales of bioheat plants at Metso.
The order is included in Metso's Pulp, Paper and Power fourth quarter 2012 orders received.
Savon Voima Oyj is a Finnish energy company that provides and markets electricity and heating services. With sales totalling more than EUR 211 million (2011), the company is one of Finland's largest providers of energy services.
