Fibria lays the cornerstone of the Horizonte 2 Project, which will more than double the capacity of its Três Lagoas unit in Mato Grosso do Sul

  • Construction already underway in the R$ 7.7 billion project
  • Project will create 40,000 direct and indirect jobs
  • New production line slated for startup in the fourth quarter of 2017
  • Três Lagoas Unit’s total pulp production capacity will be 3.05 million tons p.a.

2015 11 03 092834Fibria, a Brazilian forestry company and the world’s leading eucalyptus pulp producer, today lays the cornerstone of the Horizonte 2 Project, which will expand production capacity of its Três Lagoas Unit located in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The ceremony celebrates the official start of construction work, which is already in progress.

The Horizonte 2 Project, approved by the Board of Directors of Fibria on May 14th, is backed by an investment of R$ 7.7 billion (equivalent to about US$ 2.5 billion). Over its two years of construction, the project will create around 40,000 direct and indirect jobs. At the height of construction, the project will employ around 10,000 workers. Once commissioned, in the last quarter of 2017, Fibria's new pulp line will employ 3,000 direct and indirect workers.

Considered one of Brazil's largest private investments focused on exports, Fibria's expansion project is expected to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2017. With this, the annual pulp production capacity of the Três Lagoas unit will increase from 1.75 million tons to 3.05 million tons.

“Expansion of the Três Lagoas unit is a milestone in the history of Fibria, which rekindles its vocation for growth combined with responsibility. The start of construction follows a very well planned project, with the main supply contracts already signed. It is with tremendous pride that we are making this huge investment in Brazil, bringing jobs, better quality of life and development to Três Lagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul and Brazil,” said Fibria CEO, Marcelo Castelli.

The pulp produced by Fibria at Três Lagoas will be sold in the domestic market and transported by rail to the Port of Santos in São Paulo, from where it will be exported to Europe, North America and Asia. Considering all of the Company’s units, Fibria's total annual pulp production capacity will increase from the current 5.3 million tons to over 7 million tons, consolidating the company’s position as the world’s largest eucalyptus pulp producer.

Investment history

The execution of the Horizonte 2 Project will rely on around 60 local suppliers and will positively affect public finances by contributing an estimated R$ 450 million in taxes during construction.

“Investments of more than R$ 7 billion, creation of thousands of jobs and opportunities for the people of Mato Grosso do Sul and Brazil, who will have in Fibria  - one of the largest and most important companies in this sector on the planet - their chance to lead a prosperous and dignified life. This new unit not only expands the company’s huge and enviable production capacity, but also strengthens Mato Grosso do Sul’s position as a reliable and safe destination for private investments from both Brazil and abroad," said the Governor of Mato Grosso do Sul, Reinaldo Azambuja.

In July, Fibria signed contracts for important service packages, such as infrastructure, construction management, wood chip yard, fiber line, drying machine, recovery boiler, evaporation, causticizing, lime kiln, valves, turbogenerators and the entire power transmission and distribution system. In September, the company signed contracts for water treatment stations, the chemical plant, temporary facilities and management of the Administrative Services Center.

The Horizonte 2 Project financing structure involves export credit agencies (ECA), the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) and the Midwest Development Fund (FDCO). Fibria also contracted a US$ 400 million Export Prepayment Facility Agreement from financial institutions and issued R$ 675 million in Agribusiness Receivables Certificates (CRA). Furthermore, around 40% of the investments in the project will come from the company's own funds.

Competitiveness and Sustainability

As with all Fibria projects, Horizonte 2 will have sustainability as a business principle. The new industrial complex will have even cleaner production processes, with all the energy consumed generated by the facility itself using the biomass resulting from the industrial process. Apart from generating and consuming its own energy, the Horizonte 2 Project will generate surplus energy of 120 MWh, which will contribute to Brazil's energy matrix.

The project's industrial process also features efficient use of water resources, with around 80% of the water withdrawn recycled and recirculated between 3.5 and 5 times in the production process before being treated and returned to the environment.

Another major source of competitiveness of the Horizonte 2 Project is its access to wood. With the new unit, the average distance from the forest to supply the current production line and the new line at the Três Lagoas Unit will be just 95 kilometers.

Concern for people

Fibria has contracted health insurance from Hospital Auxiliadora in Três Lagoas for the service providers who will work on the Horizonte 2 Project. The health insurance will provide medical and outpatient care to nearly 8,000 outsourced employees who will work on the project. Fibria will also maintain a first aid station at the construction site, staffed by doctors and nurses to avoid overloading the health care system of Três Lagoas.

“Since beginning its operations in our city, Fibria has contributed to local development by generating employment opportunities, training our professionals, improving our services and our capacity for progress. I am very happy to know that Três Lagoas is performing well amidst the country's current crisis. We believe in the great company that is Fibria, which is here to stay and make Três Lagoas one of Brazil’s great cities. Congratulations Fibria. We are proud of the whole history of this company and are happy to receive the Horizonte 2 Project, which is coming to reaffirm the progress our city has made in 100 years,” said the mayor of Três Lagoas, Márcia Moura.

Fibria advances the financing strategy for its expansion project at the

Três Lagoas Unit, with investment of R$ 7.7 billion

In the fourth edition of the Investor Tour event for analysts and investors, Fibria announces the contracting of US$400 million Export Prepayment Facility Agreement and the launch of R$500 million offering of CRAs

2015 09 14 070657Fibria, a Brazilian forestry company and the world's largest eucalyptus pulp  producer, reveals its financing strategy for the Horizonte 2 Project, which will expand the production capacity of its Três Lagoas Unit located in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul for investment of R$ 7.7 billion (equivalent to around US$ 2.5 billion). During the fourth edition of Investor Tour, an event held today and tomorrow in southern Bahia state that brings together around 80 investors and analysts, the company announced details of its contracting of US$ 400 million Export Prepayment Facility Agreement and the launch of R$ 500 million offering of Agribusiness Receivables Certificates (CRAs).

The Horizonte 2 Project, one of Brazil's largest private investments focusing on the export market, also expects to tap other financing sources, such as export credit agencies (ECAs), the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) and the Midwest Development Fund (FDCO). In addition, some 40% of investment in the project should be made using the company's equity capital.

According to Guilherme Cavalcanti, Fibria's chief financial and investor relations officer, the company's strong cash generation and the financing project developed will enable the company to keep its current leverage ratio in U.S. dollar under 2.0 times, even with the R$ 7.7 billion investment.

Competitiveness and Sustainability

Fibria new operations at Três Lagoas will have one of the lowest cash costs of pulp production in the world, and will reduce the company's average cost to US$155 per ton. Today, Fibria already has one of the industry's lowest cash costs, which stood at US$ 170/t in the second quarter of this year, compared to the average cost in Brazil of US$ 214/t and in the United States of US$ 421/t, according to the consulting firm Hawkins Wright.

"The project gives us an unparalleled competiveness equation that combines wood supply, infrastructure and logistics, certifications, long-term clients and an excellent financing structure that is very difficult to replicate in the industry," says Marcelo Castelli, Fibria´s CEO.

As is the case of all of Fibria's projects, Horizonte 2 will have sustainability as a core principle. The new industrial complex will have even cleaner production processes, with all of the energy consumed generated by the actual facility using the biomass resulting from the industrial process. The project will not only generate and consume its own power, but also produce surplus power of 120 MWh, which will complement the surplus power of 70 MWh already generated by the entire company today.

The project's industrial process will also feature the efficient use of water resources, with around 80% of the water withdrawn recycled and recirculated from 3.5 to 5 times in the production process before being treated and returned to the environment.

Another major source of the competitiveness of the Horizonte 2 Project is its access to wood resources. With the new mill, the average distance from the forest to supply the current production line and the new line at the Três Lagoas Unit, which will produce more than 3 million tons of pulp annually, will be only 95 kilometers.

With commissioning slated for the fourth quarter of 2017, the new production line will have annual pulp production capacity of 1.75 million tons. With the startup of the second mill at Três Lagoas, Fibria's total annual pulp production capacity, considering all of its units, will increase from the current 5.3 million tons to over 7 million tons. The pulp produced by Fibria in Três Lagoas will be transported by rail to the Port of Santos in the state of São Paulo to be exported to markets in Europe, North America and Asia, as well as sold in the domestic market.

Investor Tour 2015

The transparency adopted in its relations with capital market analysts and investors is of primordial importance to Fibria. The Investor Tour, an annual event now in its fourth edition, brings together the company's officers and various investors and analysts from Brazil and abroad. The 2015 edition, which lasts through tomorrow, will be held at the Veracel Unit, a joint venture with Stora Enso located in the state of Bahia.

Port celebrates its 30th anniversary having handled nearly 85 million tons of pulp

BarraRiachoThe specialized terminal Portocel (Terminal Especializado de Barra do Riacho), result of a partnership between two of the world's largest pulp producers (Fibria, with 51% interest and Cenibra, with 49%), celebrates 30 years under private control in March, and has become a global benchmark for port operations. Portocel’s warehouses and quays are responsible for moving 70% of Brazil's annual pulp exports. Over its 30-year history, the port has moved nearly 85 million tons of pulp, equal to more than 5 times annual production from all Brazilian pulp producers, which totaled 16.4 million tons in 2014.

Pulp and wood are the main products that pass through the terminal, located in Aracruz (state of Espírito Santo), one of the only terminals in Brazil integrated with other forms of transportation: highways, railways, pipelines and waterways. With specialized equipment and facilities for handling pulp, the terminal is capable of loading 72,000 tons per day, versus 24,000 tons per day 30 years ago.

Round-the-clock operations and trained personnel are additional differentials that make it one of the most efficient in port operations and have led to Portocel's recognition for its efficiency and low cost.

In 2014, the port broke a historic record, moving 6,009,464 tons of pulp by year's end. The terminal has three berths that receive an average of 286 ships per year. Thirdy years ago, the facility had only a single berth, receiving an average of 64 ships per year.

Diversification - Portocel specializes in moving forestry products, but in the recent years has also dedicated operations to other cargo, taking advantage of the terminal’s potential and operating efficiency. Other forms of cargo include metals, salt, granite, sodium sulfate, pipes and project cargo. “We are prepared to handle other cargo with the same efficiency seen in pulp operations," said Patrícia Dutra Lascosque, Portocel's superintendent. She added that the port has seen a 100% increase in the handling of other products over the last four years.

Barges – In addition to berths for ships, Portocel also has a Barge Terminal, inaugurated in 2003, which led to the renewal of cabotage operations (between ports in the same country) in Brazil. The terminal is used to unload wood that Fibria produces in southern Bahia and pulp produced in Veracel, in the city of Eunápolis (Bahia). Wood is loaded on barges at the Caravelas Terminal (Bahia) and pulp, in the Belmonte (Bahia) port.

In 2014, barges transported approximately 23% of wood that supplied the Fibria plant in Aracruz (Espírito Santo). Pulp from Veracel that arrives on barges is transferred to Portocel warehouses and is later loaded onto ships headed to a number of countries. In addition to Fibria and Cenibra, other pulp producers also use Portocel to ship their product.

Productivity – In an ongoing pursuit of greater efficiency, safety and operational excellence, Portocel implemented the Operational Resizing Project in 2014. Focused on pulp handling, the project involved the adjustment of cargo handling equipment to increase productivity. To do so, the port terminal conducted studies and tests to map bottlenecks and identify opportunities for improvements to its pulp-handling infrastructure.

This project identified the opportunity to resize cargo handling equipment, both vertical (lift-trucks) and horizontal (tractors), which led to the replacement of part of the lift-truck fleet, comprised of 7-ton lift-trucks, with vehicles capable of handling 16 tons. The tractor fleet was also replaced with forestry tractors adapted with quick-coupling mechanisms, while service teams for both activities were also resized.
