NewPage Corporation, North America's leading supplier of publishing papers, announced the "Paper Sells More Product" campaign which will award one active catalog, magazine or retail company with $100,000 in print services to support the winner's efforts to sell more products.

Paper, especially in the form of catalogs, magazines and retail inserts, has been proven to sell more products and enhance profitability. According to the Direct Marketing Association, printed catalogs are the largest revenue generator among all media channels accounting for, on average, 50 percent of all sales for multichannel marketers. BIGResearch shares that magazines and the advertising they contain drive web search more than any other medium, more than double internet advertising and social media. Nielsen reports that newspaper inserts and circulars are responsible for 89 percent of coupon distribution, driving customers to visit the store.

Paper has an emotional appeal that customers respond to; it encourages the impulse buy. "Printed catalogs, magazines and retail inserts are the next best thing to actually putting products in the customers' hands," said Barry Nelson, senior vice president, sales for NewPage. "I personally encourage all companies that publish printed magazines, catalogs or retail inserts that sell product to enter the sweepstakes."

NewPage understands that direct marketers, magazine and catalog publishers and retailers have been under huge cost pressures in this recession.  The "Paper Sells More Product" contest was developed to enable a cross-section of paper users to renew their prospecting efforts.

The "Paper Sells More Product" campaign runs through December 31, 2010, with the winner receiving notification in mid-January 2011. To enter and read a complete listing of sweepstakes rules and eligibility, please visit www.NewPageGiveaway.com. Entries to the sweepstakes will only be taken online through this Web site.

The Board of Rottneros has approved an investment of SEK 60m for a new biological water treatment plant at Vallvik Mill. This investment is one of the stages of the investment programme presented at the end of 2009, at the time of the new share issue.

Investments have previously been granted to improve the evaporation plant and the recovery boiler at Vallvik. This work will be carried out during the planned maintenance shutdown at the mill in October 2010. The investments now mean that it is possible to use and incinerate more organic material and to reduce the size of the external water treatment plant, which has now been approved.

The new water treatment plant will be put into operation during the autumn of 2011 when it is planned to implement the final stage of the investment programme.

"The investment programme that is going ahead at Vallvik Mill resolves long-standing discussions with various levels of the environmental agencies, at the same time as expanding the production of bioenergy at the mill and increasing production capacity by 20 per cent to an annual figure of 242,000 tonnes", explains Ole Terland, President of Rottneros.

St Marys Paper Corp. Plan for Restart

St Marys Paper Corp. has engaged Dennis Bunnell as Chairman of the Board and CEO to head up the plans to restart production at the St Marys Paper mill in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.

St Marys Paper Corp. curtailed production of its groundwood pulp and paper mill on March 12, 2010. At that time the company indicated it would be managing the curtailment process in order that paper production could continue when market and business conditions warrant.

"St Marys has used this period of curtailment to conduct an independent up-dated marketing and sales study and to evaluate the operational and capital changes needed to ensure long term cost competitiveness. Our goal continues to be to transition the business from simply a paper production facility to a paper production, green energy and bio-economy business. Dennis's proven knowledge, experience and leadership gives us great confidence that he is a key step in achieving these medium and long term goals." said Gord Acton, President of St Marys.

"I am excited to join St Mary's team and believe that the biomass co-generation facility proposed to be built on St Marys property, when combined with capital improvements in the mill, will ensure the long term sustainability of the St Marys business model. We have already commenced discussions with stakeholders concerning our plan. These talks will continue with the goal of restarting the paper mill as early as possible this fall. Our discussions with major stakeholders have been positive and we anticipate completion of these discussions as soon as possible" said Dennis Bunnell.

"There are many items in our business plan which have to come together for the mill to re-open. I was happy to read about the implementation of an energy conservation program and I congratulate the foresight of Ontario Minister of Energy, Brad Duguid. This program will incent large electricity users like St Marys Paper Corp. to increase their usage at off-peak times. Not only does this have a positive impact on the environment, it will help make participating companies more competitive. This is a good program and is one of the critical pieces of our business plan," added Dennis Bunnell.

"St Marys Paper Corp. will be continuing to communicate and solicit support for the new business plan from all stakeholders over the coming weeks." concluded Mr. Bunnell, "This announcement certainly sets us on a positive track. There is more work to be done but we are off to a very positive start."

ABB to showcase analytical equipment at WWEM 2010

ABB will showcase instrumentation and analytical equipment at the Water, Wastewater and Environmental Monitoring (WWEM) 2010 exhibition on 10-11 November at the International Centre in Telford.

The company, which will be found on stands 107 and 108, will exhibit a range of products, including the new Aztec series of analysers designed for potable water treatment.

ABB will exhibit a range of products, including the new Aztec series of analysers designed for potable water treatment and the Mcertified Watermaster flowmeter

Built on ABB's new analytical instrument platform, the Aztec 600 aluminium, iron, manganese, phosphate and ammonia colorimetric monitors offer enhanced accuracy with simple operation and maintenance.

The Aztec range incorporates features such as automatic two-point calibration, a self-cleaning functionality and automatic sample dilution.

The inherent product design and auto-calibrating features mean that maintenance is typically only required annually, compared with every three months for some units.

Also on display will be ABB's Mcertified Watermaster flowmeter.

Designed specifically for the water and wastewater market, it features an octagonal flow sensor and the company's Verimaster verification system.

Accompanying it will be the Aquamaster GSM-SMS electromagnetic flowmeter.

Based on the same technology as a mobile phone, the Aquamaster can be contacted using a PC or through a mobile phone via SMS messaging, providing operators with instant remote access to accurate flow data.

These will be joined by ABB's range of pressure and temperature measurement products for use around water and wastewater treatment processes, along with examples of the company's recorder products including the SM500F, a field-mountable videographic data recorder.

Capable of being installed anywhere, such as a panel, wall or pipe, with no additional cost, the SM500F takes recording out of the control room and offers users localised access to operational data.

Its fully sealed IP66 and Nema 4X enclosure provides protection against water and dust ingress.

The stand will also feature an interactive display demonstrating how ABB's technologies can be integrated to help monitor and control water supplies.

The display features various examples from ABB's instrumentation, drives, motors and low-voltage product ranges, all controlled by the company's latest PLC automation technology with Profibus and Ethernet communications technology.

ABB specialists will speak at the main seminar and at two practical workshops, covering some of the latest issues affecting the water and wastewater industries.

Tony Hoyle, ABB UK flow product manager, will present a seminar (from 12:00 until 12:30 on 10-11 November) and a workshop (from 14:30 until 15:00 on 10 November in Room 5) on Mcerts.

The sessions will cover topics such as EPR/PPC permits, operator monitoring assessment (OMA) and the self monitoring of effluent flow.

The workshop will cover regulatory flow monitoring requirements and verification, while giving a review of the progress made on these fronts in the UK's industrial and water sectors.

The second workshop, on 11 November from 13:30 until 14:00 in Room 6, will be presented by Steve Donnelly of ABB's Continuous Gas Analysis business.

The seminar will provide advice to plant operators that monitor emissions to atmosphere, covering issues such as the importance of selecting the best continuous emissions monitoring system (CEMS), the maintenance and operational best practice of CEMSs and how to meet the demand of current UK and European legislation.

ABB manufactures and supplies a range of equipment for controlling, measuring and monitoring water and wastewater treatment processes, for both utilities and industrial applications.

These products are backed up by the company's service team, which provides a range of support options including verification and onsite support contracts.

Some time ago, Södra Timber took the decision to invest in a new sawmill in Värö with a capacity of 750,000 cubic metres. All licences for the new sawmill have now been obtained and the ground work got under way in the middle of July.

This investment involves the transfer of machinery and equipment from the German sawmill company Klausner Group's facility in Adelebsen, Germany. The entire facility will be moved from Germany to Värö in Sweden.

Klausner will be responsible for dismantling, relocating, constructing and starting up the Värö facility. Dismantling is under way in Germany and construction at the Värö site will start in October. Klausner has secured the participation of machinery manufacturers Link and Springer in the project.

"This means that the same staff that built the sawmill in Adelebsen will now be reassembling the sawmill in Värö," explained Peter Nilsson, President of Södra Timber.

"We plan to begin production at the facility in the summer of 2011. Production at the existing sawmill in Värö will continue as usual during the entire construction period," Nilsson commented.

APP hits back at NGO allegations

Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) has defended its latest report – Getting the facts down on paper – which outlines APP Indonesia’s commitment to sustainability, following allegations by a number of NGO’s including WWF and Greenpeace. APP says the allegations are false and the report has now been independently verified.

According to APP, the report contains numerous facts that demonstrate the paper producer has been fulfilling its obligations to operate in a sustainable and environmentally conscious way. The accusation is the latest in an ongoing public relations war between environmental NGO's and APP, which is a major paper supplier to Australian printers.

However following its publication APP has been subject to a negative publicity campaign from a number of environmental non-government organisations, principally WWF. The 95 claims made against APP included allegations of illegal logging, deforestation, impact on biodiversity, responsibility for forest fires, poor financial viability and human rights abuses.

Aditya Bayunanda WWF’s Pulp & Paper Coordinator for Indonesia says, “Satellites images have been capturing and documenting every single hectare that the company has destroyed for years. We have no doubt, paper APP produces in its mills contains Sumatra’s timber from dense tropical rainforest.”

Meanwhile, APP says that the independent audit, conducted by audit service Mazars, found that the facts contained in the APP report were accurate and, therefore, the allegations made by the environmental NGOs were indeed baseless, inaccurate and without validity.

A statement from Mazars concludes, “In our opinion, based on our work described in this report, the facts and figures included in the report are reasonably accurate, verifiable and supported by documentation and information provided by external parties.”

POM GasMaster portable air meter

POM Technology Oy AB is a leading supplier of paper machine's compact wetend. POMS purger, which is the key component of the patented POM System, is a simple and compact component to remove the air which is in the process. The inventor, Paul Olof Meinander received the Wallenberg price for this concept in 2004, in Sweden. Today, the POM Technology Oy Ab company belongs to the Aikawa Group and has so far delivered nearly 70 systems worldwide.

GasMaster  portable air meter

Based on experience, POM Technology Oy Ab has now developed a simple and robust portable air meter, suitable for all paper and paperboard factories.
It is important for all manufacturers of paper, tissue and paperboard to know and comply with air levels of wetwnd, not only when they have problems. Many problems arise because of air, for example papertears, impurities, MD variations, poor retention and drainage.

By eliminating the air in papermanufacturingprocess you improve the papermachines efficiency and paperquality. At the same time wetend becomes more stable, dewatering and papertrail strength increases.

POM GasMaster can be easily moved to different positions. It has a high accuracy and can measure both the amount of gaseous and dissolved air.

POM Technology is represented by Nipman Papertechnology in Scandinavia.
