Through a partnership with the National Park Foundation, International Paper is launching a series of commemorative national park cups, available for use by parks, concessionaires and others. The cups - International Paper's commercially compostable ecotainer(R) - feature eight different artistic renderings of iconic national parks along with an educational message about conservation and environmental stewardship.

"International Paper has a strong legacy of environmental responsibility, and our ecotainer compostable foodservice products are just one example of our stewardship," said John Faraci, International Paper's chairman and chief executive officer and National Park Foundation board member. "We are proud to honor our national parks through this commemorative cup and are looking forward to working with the parks and others to develop composting and recycling solutions."

International Paper will donate one penny for each commemorative cup sold, up to $1 million, to the National Park Foundation to be used to support the Foundation's efforts to promote and protect our national parks.

"International Paper is launching a truly holistic project to support national parks," said National Park Foundation President and CEO Neil Mulholland. "This effort is simultaneously raising needed funds to help protect America's parks, and is also helping promote the range of amazing places for the public to visit - all in an environmentally responsible way."

The national park ecotainer cups can be purchased for use by any national park, concessionaire or other organization that would like to support the parks. The national park ecotainer cups feature iconic national parks - five hot cup designs and three cold cup designs. The cups come in assorted sizes.

In conjunction with the launch of the national park ecotainer cup, International Paper has recently partnered with the Grand Teton Conservation District to conduct a waste characterization study at the Grand Teton National Park. The study, funded in part by International Paper, is aimed at identifying best practices in foodservice waste reduction and composting solutions in order to transfer that knowledge to national parks throughout the country. The national park ecotainer cup is being used as part of the study.

Produced by International Paper, the national park ecotainer cups use paperboard from the company's Riegelwood, N.C., paper mill that is coated at its Prosperity, S.C., extrusion plant, and formed into cups at its Kenton, Ohio, foodservice facility.

Mondi, a global leader in the manufacturing of paper and packaging, will host the Digital Specialist Forum (DSF) on April 15, 2010, offering customer-representatives an opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the rapidly burgeoning digital print market. Industry experts will convene in Vienna for this day-long event to discuss current and upcoming printing and paper trends, machine technology, and print quality features.

The DSF agenda includes key training sessions designed to impart knowledge and create discourse about digital market trends, digitally suitable papers, various printing technologies, and print quality know-how. According to Johannes Klumpp, Marketing and Sales Director of Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper, “The key to growth in the digital print market will be the understanding and utilization of variable data printing, and education is needed across the board for paper sales, print sales, print buying and print execution.”  CEOs, top Marketing Directors and Marketing agency representatives will be among the participants taking part in discussions about key topics such as Transpromo, the future of printed communication media in the face of new online media, and the effects of digital printing on the paper market.

Among the speakers presenting at the DSF, Andreas Weber, founder of the “DigitaldruckForum” and CEO of Value Communication will deliver the keynote address. The list of guest speakers invited to take part in the DSF podium lectures and roundtable discussions includes internationally recognized entrepreneurs and innovators active across Europe and the globe.

In response to the current industry trends, Wolfgang Kropiunik, Head of Marketing Uncoated Fine Paper contends, “Digital printing is a rapidly growing market. Mondi recognizes this and we are developing our technology and product portfolios in tandem with the evolving digital print industry.  Our paper and printing expertise can be seen in our new Digital SRA3 Product Sample Folder, which showcases the high quality print results from Mondi’s Digital Printing Paper Portfolio.”

Manroland and WIFAG call off negotiations

Manroland AG and WIFAG have agreed to call off negotiations aimed at manroland AG acquiring WIFAG. It was not possible to harmonize the interests of both parties. However, manroland and WIFAG remain open for cooperation on a technical level.

Sydney print shop Beaver Press has gone into voluntary administration in order to sell its offset assets as the business prepares to merge with Chippendale Printing. Beaver Press' Redfern facility has closed down its offset capabilities however Beaver's sister digital print company Good Crowd, which is not in administration, will continue to operate out of the site.

David Francis, director of Beaver Press told Australian Printer the merge is at an advanced stage with a number of Beaver Press staff already re-locating to Chippendale's Concord headquarters however the action is awaiting formal approval from Chippendale's board of directors and its private equity owners Helmsman Funds Management.

Francis continues the merge came about following a tough period for Beaver Press. He says, "We were set up as purely an A1 perfecting printer and when the magazine market took a hit during the global financial crisis things got a bit tighter so we put our feelers out to see who we could combine our services with."

The merger will include as many as 10 key staff members, Beaver Press' operating systems and client base, with Francis confirming that the majority of its offset equipment would be sold and "regrettably" there would be around 30 redundancies.

Francis, who will also make the move to Chippendale in a consultancy position, says the move will enable him to offer Beaver customers a full range of printing solutions.

He says, "I can now say to my clients I can offer on-site mailing, packaging solutions and greater economies on different size presses." He adds, "When our services are combined we will potentially be Sydney's first complete service direct mail provider."

Administrators PKF are expected to sell the offset assets of Beaver Press while Good Crowd will continue to operate out of the Redfern facility and establish a "strategically alliance" with Chippendale printing.

At Milan Design Week 2010, April 14-19 at Superstudio Piú, Swedish lighting company Wästberg will launch a lighting fixture made in DuraPulp and developed in close collaboration with Swedish forestry industry company Södra and Swedish architects and designers Claesson Koivisto Rune.

Last year Claesson Koivisto Rune and Södra developed the Parupu children's chair out of DuraPulp, thus proving it possible to make a real chair of paper. Now Claesson Koivisto Rune and Södra team up with Wästberg to challenge themselves even further: merging electricity, paper and light, using paper, not only as a component or for casing, but really fully integrated.

"Combining old wisdom with ground-breaking technology is elementary to Wästbergs philosophy" says Magnus Wästberg, founder and CEO of Wästberg. "Paper has been used throughout history for making lamp shades. Now we are using paper for the actual structure of the fixture adding advanced LED technology."

"One principal mission for Södra, together with innovative partners, is to develop and supply tomorrow's raw materials based on renewable forest resources", says Karin Emilsson, director of technology at Södra and head of Södra Innovation. "The DuraPulp lamp by Wästberg meets high customer standards of functionality and design although it's made out of a new totally renewable material."

Notes to editors:

DuraPulp

DuraPulp is made from selected pulp from Södra combined with PLA (Polylactic acid, a renewable biopolymer produced from starch). The two components in combination provide special properties that can be reinforced through hot pressing. DuraPulp is a material with high wet strength, high water resistance, high dimensional stability as well as high tensile strength and bending stiffness. DuraPulp is made from 100 per cent renewable fibres and is fully biodegradable.

upmlogoThe Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has granted UPM Silvesta a state subsidy of EUR 40,000 for a development project titled “Towards new operating culture and cost-effective nature conservation – burning retention tree groups in privately owned forests”. The Ministry considers the proposed measures conducive to the implementation of the Forest Biodiversity Programme for Southern Finland (METSO) and the achievement of targets set out for commercial forests. The project will be carried out in cooperation by UPM Forest and UPM Silvesta.

The project will develop the methods of burning retention tree groups as part of nature management of commercial forests. The aim is to devise a practical procedure that secures natural biodiversity and is feasible nation-wide, cost-effective, promotes new collaborative culture and increases the awareness and acceptance of nature conservation amongst forestry practitioners. The model will lay the basis for extensive nature conservation measures to be carried out alongside commercial forestry.

"Naturally recurring forest fires create a succession of conditions in the forest ecology. Some forest species specialise in living under such conditions. Since the frequency of wildfires and deliberate burning as part of silvicultural techniques has fallen, populations specialising in post-fire environments have grown increasingly rare," says Jukka Koivumäki, Managing Director of UPM Silvesta

UPM has devised new burning methods for a number of years as part of its biodiversity programme to secure the continued existence of post-fire species.

"Follow-ups indicate that burning even minor retention tree groups has positive impacts on the ecological system. The project has previously been implemented in UPM-owned forests. Private forest owners now have the opportunity to participate and increase post-fire habitats in their own forest," says Koivumäki.

Leaving individual trees or scattered groups of trees standing at final cutting is one of the most common nature management measures in commercial forests. Research shows that retention trees are significant for ecological diversity, but further practical solutions are required. It is also important that forest owners are motivated and encouraged to set aside retention trees and to implement other nature management measures in their commercially used forests.

UPM Forest
UPM Forest is in charge of wood procurement for UPM’s Finnish mills and for the management of company forests in Finland. The company owns some 915,000 hectares of forests and has its own nursery. Most of the wood required by the mills is procured from privately owned Finnish forests. UPM Forest conducts more than 30,000 timber procurement deals each year and offers forest owners diverse, high-quality and competitive forestry services, as well as selling Bonvesta plots of land and forest lots. UPM Forest has more than 100 forest service offices around Finland. For further information: www.upm-kymmene.fi/metsa, www.puukauppa.com or www.bonvesta.fi

UPM’s biodiversity programme
UPM implements a global biodiversity programme in its own forests. The programme aims to secure diversity as part of sustainable forest use and to promote the best forestry practices. The programme relies on six key issues of natural biodiversity. These are native tree species, deadwood, valuable habitats, forest structure, water ecosystems and natural forests. International targets and national schemes regarding the key issues are set forth in the programme.

UPM and METSO
UPM actively participates in the Forest Biodiversity Programme for Southern Finland (METSO). The Group wishes to promote sustainable forestry and forest conservation on a voluntary basis. UPM puts high value on cost-efficient nature conservation and combining ecological data with forestry expertise. METSO also creates a platform for active nature management measures. Environmental State subsidies for forestry have been introduced to cover additional costs or losses arising from the preservation of biological diversity or other nature management measures. UPM offers forest owners a wide selection of nature management services which qualify for METSO funding or environmental State subsidies.

The UPM biodiversity programme embraces the measures set out in the METSO programme.
