Sofidel, a leading global manufacturer of tissue paper for hygienic and domestic use, has just announced the formal opening of its second greenfield plant in the United States, signaling a significant expansion by the company in response to consumer demand.

  • State-of-the art, $360 million facility in Oklahoma can produce 120,000 tons of paper annually

The 1.8 million-square-foot production plant is fully operational in Inola, Okla., leveraging one of the United States’ most recently built paper manufacturing facilities, equipped with state-of-the art technology.

The $360 million technologically and environmentally advanced plant is Sofidel’s second greenfield investment in the U.S.. An integrated facility, with its paper mill that transforms pulp into paper and the converting plant that makes the finished product, it can turn out 120,000 tons of tissue annually.

Powered by its production capacity and safety measures in place, Sofidel has been a vital link this year in the nation’s supply chain, producing tissue for hygienic and domestic use in high demand because of the novel coronavirus.

“The U.S. market is fundamental for the growth of the Sofidel Group and the new plant, enabling an enhanced production capacity and a further improvement of the geographical coverage, strengthens our position and creates the conditions for further growth,” said Luigi Lazzareschi, CEO of the Sofidel Group. “This is an important step, of which we are proud, all the more so in light of the results achieved in the first half of 2020 which improve last year’s already good performances.”

The Oklahoma manufacturing plant, strategically located about 30 miles east of Tulsa, is among the biggest in the state and stands apart from the rest in the industry with its automated machinery. It produces tissue, paper towels, toilet paper and napkins, mostly for large commercial retailers.

Spread over 240 acres within an industrial park, it employs more than 300 people. The site, which has easy access to highways, air, rail and other key infrastructure, allows capacity to be doubled in a second operational phase that would increase the expected job total to 600.

“Our talent and teams are focused on working directly with customers, determined to reduce system waste, ensure sustainability and bring immediate shared value to stakeholders,” said Jose Zarandona, Sofidel America site operations manager.

The integrated plant features two AHEAD-2.0L paper mill machines, manufactured by Toscotec, and 14 converting lines. Advanced reeling technology that preserves the product’s softness while ensuring uniform sheet separation from start to finish of every roll.

Sustainability and energy efficiency are key components at the facility, including conical refiners to minimize the energy consumed in the fiber-refining process and pumping systems featuring dry seals that allow the use of recycled water.

2020 10 09 081606

In addition, the plant has adapted techniques from the food and beverage industry to improve logistics. An automated system transfers finished goods from the converting lines to the warehouse, using laser guided vehicles (LGVs).

Sofidel began the Inola construction in 2018, a project known as greenfield for having an international company establish a new business, building its operations from the ground up. The company opened its first U.S. greenfield plant in 2018 in Circleville, Ohio.

The Oklahoma plant primarily will serve the south-central and central-western United States, a market where Sofidel has had a presence since 2012 and where it has grown rapidly, year after year. Locally, it has partnered with the Cherokee Nation, Muscogee (Creek) Nation and the Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology to attract and recruit job candidates.

Voith introduces a new screen plate design for pulpers used in recovered paper pulping. The CurvedBar screen plate extends service life in Voith's IntensaPulper IP-R by more than 50 percent and improves the quality of fiber suspension. The results are less maintenance effort and material use, as well as fewer downtimes, leading to a more efficient overall process and lower costs. Chinese paper manufacturer Shanying International Holding Co. LTD., has tested the CurvedBar screen plate on its PM 5 in Maanshan and is now equipping other pulping systems with the innovative solution.

"With the new CurvedBar technology, we substantially reduced downtime and extended maintenance intervals at the pulper with consistently high operating quality," says Wan Tao, Vice President Production at Shanying International Holding Co. LTD. "We also achieved very positive results from the coarse screening."

  • Innovative screen plate geometry with more than 50 percent longer service life
  • Optimal interaction of pulper, rotor and screen plate for a higher quality fiber suspension
  • Reduced costs for operation and maintenance

To reduce the high mechanical loads on the screen plate, Voith developed an innovative curved bar design and optimally matched to the geometries of pulper, rotor and screen plate. "This results in a much longer service life compared to conventional screen plates," explains Oliver Lüdtke, Global Service and Product Manager at Voith Paper. The lower friction also reduces energy consumption. "Combined with savings in material and maintenance, significant cost-saving potential can be realized, and the customer’s carbon footprint is reduced due to greater sustainability," says Lüdtke.

2020 10 08 111106

Lower shearing forces, higher quality fiber suspension and problem-free ragger formation
Thanks to the lower shearing forces on the screen plate, far fewer contaminants are shredded. This improves the quality of the fiber suspension, reduces the amount of small rejects that need to be laboriously removed in the downstream process steps, and allows trouble-free ragger formation. Furthermore, the risk of bar breakage and deformation of the screen plate is significantly reduced. The CurvedBar screen plate has proven its effectiveness at Shanying in Maanshan, China, and other locations.

"With the new curved technology and premium W material, we optimized and reduced the flake content and are maintaining high-efficiency pulping performance in the long term," says Song Jie, Manager of the Technical Department at Shanying International Holding Co. LTD. "The flake content is about 15 percent, the lifetime of high-efficiency pulping performance is extended from two months to five months."

"We still keep very good collaborating relation with Voith for the OCC stock preparation and paper machine, especially for testing the performance of the screen plate with CurvedBar and premium W material," Jie adds. "We value the excellent and professional support provided by Voith during installation and commissioning of the screen plates. At all times, Voith was in close contact with us to continually optimize the equipment. We are very satisfied with the results and happy to have Voith as a strong partner by our side."

Following the successful pilot phase, the company has already awarded Voith several follow-up orders to successively retrofit other pulpers with the new components. Other customers have also placed repeat orders for the innovative screen plate design following successful testing.

Fully integrated solution will enhance product quality through improved control of production changes

Leading Swedish pulp manufacturer Södra Cell has appointed ABB to supply and install a new, state-of-the-art Quality Control System (QCS) at its specialty mill in Mörrum, southern Sweden, which produces paper pulp and hardwood dissolving pulp for customers throughout Europe. Delivery is planned for October 2020.

The QCS order includes new sensors for a range of quality parameters including basis weight and moisture content plus multivariable cross direction (MCD) control. The system also benefits from the ability to interface directly with Södra Cell’s existing, third-party headbox actuators. A 12-month service contract provides comprehensive technical back-up after installation.

To meet the customer’s main objective of changing production rates without disturbing pulp quality, the QCS incorporates coordinated speed change control. This features an operator interface that provides information about all the supervisory and regulatory loops, including the status of the individual actuator ramps. Through its ease of use, this control encourages higher utilization than with conventional systems, leading to fewer sheet breaks, less downtime and an overall increase in average speed and production.

“Our existing, productive relationship with ABB, and their honest, consultative approach were critical to this order,” said Lennart Willander, Production Manager Pulp Dryer 1, Södra Cell Mörrum. “We look forward to continuing our strong relationship moving forward.”

“This order demonstrates ABB’s expertise in measurement and control throughout the value chain,” said Steve St. Jarre, Head of Business Development, Pulp and Paper, Process Industries, ABB. “We were able to advise the customer fully on the benefits of an integrated QCS that could interface with existing actuators versus a measurement system alone. We are confident that this will result in the desired improvements in productivity and product quality.”
