Initial excerpts released from report findings indicate that in just a decade, the biggest driver of colour selection for branding and packaging has moved from fashion to social media, with technology predicted to become the biggest influence by 2030.

Aligning with the theme for Luxe Pack 2019, the research also charts the rising role sustainability credentials will play in years to come, from the departure of using colours such as browns and greens in favour of broader palettes, to the intrinsic place sustainability agendas hold in packaging design briefs today.

Stefan Pryor, packaging specialist says: “Our offering for Luxe Pack 2019 demonstrates two fundamental areas of our business; our expert colour capabilities and our game-changing work in the sustainability arena, which offers brands the opportunity to use high quality papers and plastic-free packaging incorporating circular design without compromising on beauty.

“By picking up our Progressive Palettes report, those attending will gain a unique insight into the modern context of colour, while learning what is influencing design for brands from all categories now and in the future. It has been developed specifically for those striving to stay one step ahead, as the landscape we navigate and consumer expectations become more and more complex.

“We’ve also chosen this year to unveil a brand new COLOURFORM™ demonstrator, further showcasing the extent to which plastic-free packaging can deliver. COLOURFORM is a unique combination of colour accuracy, 3D design possibilities and high-quality sustainable materials, all working together in harmony, to deliver a bespoke and premium brand experience.”

James Cropper has received the first bales of used coffee cups from a pioneering pilot scheme in collaboration with Forge Recycling, environmental charity Hubbub and Leeds City Council.

The delivery marks a significant step in the papermaker’s ambition to help recycle some of the estimated three billion take-away cups that are currently thrown away in the UK each year. Through its unique  CupCycling™ technology - the world’s first process dedicated to upcycling disposable coffee cups – James Cropper has the capacity to upcycle 500 million used coffee cups.

Forge Recycling has collected 159,000 single-use coffee cups - from workplaces, coffee shops, universities, shopping centres and on street cup bins - since launching on 18thOctober 2018. Instead of the cups going to waste they have been delivered to James Cropper for upcycling.

2019 01 30 085120

Running until March 2019, the pilot runs alongside the #LeedsByExample campaign and seeks to improve the ‘on the go’ recycling infrastructure for coffee cups, and other packaging such as plastics and cans, for consumers in Leeds. Waste is collected by Forge Recycling, which has introduced a new paper cup collection service in parallel. Focusing on closed loop systems, Forge Recycling has performed a cup collection service for Leeds University and Leeds Beckett University.

With the help of James Cropper, all 159,000 cups collected will be given a second life as beautiful papers and packaging.  The delivery will make its way through James Cropper’s CupCycling facility - which launched in September 2017 – and has already upcycled over 30 million disposable cups.

James Cropper Chairman and CEO Phil Wild said: “With the capacity to upcycle 500 million coffee cups per year we welcome the thousands of discarded cups brought to Kendal today and hope this is just one of many local initiatives we can support to meet the capacity that we have. This scheme demonstrates that with the right infrastructure, great in-roads can be made to tackle the coffee cup issue.

“There needs to be a change in mindset in how we handle waste and source materials, and ensuring packaging is easy for consumers to recycle is key to this. The delivery marks a pivotal moment for   recycling in the UK – and for us, it’s a step towards realising the potential of our CupCycling capabilities.”

A host of major brands, such as such Asda, Coca-Cola GB, Costa Coffee, McDonald's, Pret a Manger, Starbucks and Shell, have joined Hubbub’s #LeedsByExample initiative to date. While the trial in Leeds ends in March 2019, Forge Waste & Recycling estimate that the number of coffee cups it could deliver to James Cropper in one year from Leeds alone could exceed one million – a fantastic example of the circular economy in action.

Gavin Ellis, Director at Hubbub, commented:“It’s not widely understood by consumers that coffee cups have to be recycled via a different waste stream, which is why we focus on developing infrastructure and communications in cities that make it easier for people to recycle properly while on-the-go.

“Almost three billion coffee cups go to waste every year. While the results of the trial are just the tip of the iceberg, they do demonstrate that with the right infrastructure and partners, coffee cups can become a profitable waste stream. Our goal is to extend the activity to include further cities in 2019 and encourage more waste companies to take inspiration from Forge and explore how they can adapt their operations to benefit from this valuable resource.”

Sam Goodall, Operations Director Forge Waste & Recycling said:“In just three months we’ve quickly moved from collecting very few cups to nearly two-hundred-thousand that are ready for delivery to the James Cropper mill. The pilot shows that the potential for our work with Hubbub and James Cropper to transform UK waste and embed circular economy thinking when it comes to coffee cups in cities is very real.”

The CupCycling process involves removing the plastic coating that makes take-away cups waterproof, while preserving the precious paper fibres and instead of going to waste, the cups are transformed into fine papers for consumer packaging such as the iconic yellow Selfridges carrier bag.

Going a step further, James Cropper’s latest innovation in  plastic-free packaging – COLOURFORM™ – uses paper fibre from renewable forests, as well as used coffee cups to create moulded packaging. With over 173 years’ worth of experience in papermaking behind it, COLOURFORM was a natural evolution for James Cropper, offering brands like LUSH, and in turn consumers, more choice. The packaging is recyclable and biodegradable, which means that even if it is not recycled, it breaks down without any harm to the environment.

Phil Wild concludes: “We’re incredibly proud to work with Forge and Hubbub, who have successfully delivered a game-changing system which can help usbecome a nation that truly creates value from waste. We encourage more cities across the country to explore how they can adopt this pioneering initiative.”

Master papermaker, James Cropper, will sign the Waste to Wealth Commitment today at the Waste to Wealth Summit - an event convened by Business in the Community – The Prince’s Responsible Business Network.

200 leaders from business, government, academia and civil society will gather at the event to tackle the challenges of climate change and the destruction of natural habitats by committing to actions in a Waste to Wealth Commitment. The Commitment will help to collectively double the nation’s resource productivity and reduce avoidable waste by 2030 (supercharging the UK Industrial Strategy’s 2050 targets).

2018 11 22 103057The event, held today at Veolia Southwark’s integrated waste management facility in London, will be attended by the HRH The Prince of Wales where he will deliver a keynote address. The Rt Hon Michael Gove MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, will also deliver a speech in which he will detail how the government will support businesses which are stepping up to this challenge.

James Cropper is one of over 40 Waste to Wealth Commitment signatories and is pledging to continue its work as a key innovator in the packaging and recycling industries, having already created world-first technologies. The papermaker’s unique CupCycling™technology - the world’s first process dedicated to upcycling disposable coffee cups – has seen 30 million coffee cups recycled to date. Instead of going to waste, the cups are turned into beautiful papers and consumer packaging. The process involves removing the tricky polyethylene coating that makes take-away cups waterproof, while preserving the precious paper fibres.

Taking this process a step further, James Cropper’s latest innovation in plastic-free packaging – COLOURFORM™ – uses paper fibre from renewable forests, as well as used coffee cups to create plastic-free packaging. With over 173 years’ worth of experience in papermaking behind it, COLOURFORM was a natural evolution for James Cropper, offering brands, and in turn consumers, more choice. The packaging is 100 per cent renewable, recyclable and biodegradable, which means that even if it is not recycled, it breaks down without any harm to the environment.

Signing the Waste to Wealth Commitment recognises the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) conclusion from October 2018 that there is only 12 years to change the world’s relationship with the resources people use to avoid catastrophic climate change and restore the health of the environment.  The Waste to Wealth Commitment signatories are committing to the following actions:

Set targets to improve the productivity of resources that are key for our business.

Work collectively towards doubling the nation’s resource productivity and reduce avoidable waste by 2030, contributing in the way that is most relevant to their business.

Redesign how resources are used in our products, services and operations.

Collaborate across our organisations, value chains and sectors.

Reconvene and report on progress annually to share learning and demonstrate results.

Phil Wild, CEO at James Cropper, said:

2018 11 22 103033“Earlier this year we hosted one of the BITC’s Seeing is Believing roundtables at our paper mill where our plastic-free packaging and coffee cup recycling processes were used as inspiration for discussion on what more businesses can do to create value from waste. We’ve developed these processes over a number of years because we recognise the need for brands to consider their packaging design and explore plastic-free alternatives.

“To date, we have recycled 30 million coffee cups at our world-first CupCycling facility. However, we actually have the capacity to convert 500 million per year into papers for packaging, and effectively utilising this capacity is one of the key areas of focus as part of our commitment today.”

Gudrun Cartwright, environment director at Business in the Community, said:

“James Cropper has demonstrated leadership and commitment to tackle systemic challenges by signing up to the Waste to Wealth Commitment.

“2030 is a critical year if we are to ensure we have an environment in which business and communities can flourish. The risks of inaction are enormous, but so too are the opportunities that could be created from a prosperous and resilient, low carbon economy.  We must make the most out of precious resources, waste as little as possible and find ways of turning the waste we do create into new wealth.

“We welcome other organisations to sign up to the Waste to Wealth Commitment and take action to solve this critical problem.”

Based in the English Lake District, a UNESCO World Heritage site, sustainability is at the heart of everything James Cropper does. It has a commitment to the highest standards of sustainability ranging from sourcing raw materials, to investment in renewable energy, and world-leading recycling innovation.

James Cropper CEO Phil Wild comments: “It’s encouraging to see the Government seek to work closely with industry to progress the development of a sustainable infrastructure around recycling.

"Significant strides have been made in the supply chain already. This can only improve as more plastic-free packaging solutions are made available and the infrastructure for waste materials works to keep recyclable materials in the value chain.

2016 01 25 111815

“We have shown that there are credible plastic-free packaging alternatives through our COLOURFORM innovation, which is renewable, recyclable and biodegradable. It was inspired by the principles of a circular economy – one where packaging leaves no trace.

“Partnerships between brands, recycling facilities, waste management companies and government are key in building on the great work that is already being done in establishing best practice for ‘on-the-go’ recycling.

“We hope that the decision from the Chancellor will put fire in the bellies of UK businesses to accelerate plans to seek plastic-free packaging alternatives.”

Specifically on the latte levy, Phil says: “While the levy would have been a welcome positive step towards tackling the issues surrounding disposable coffee cups, it wasn’t the only solution. More needs to be done to build an effective infrastructure, not just for cups, but other waste materials, to facilitate effective recycling and keep recyclable materials in the value chain."

Some fast facts:

  • James Cropper's CupCycling plant is the world’s first process dedicated to upcycling disposable coffee cups. This valuable waste stream is turned instead into beautiful papers and consumer packaging. The process involves removing the tricky polyethylene coating that makes take-away cups waterproof, while preserving the precious paper fibres.
  • James Cropper's CupCycling facility has recycled 24 million cups since September 2017 alone - one positive step in reducing the 2.5 billion takeaway cups currently being thrown away in the UK every year. But the real area of interest is the potential to do more; the facility has the capacity to upcycle 500 million each year.
  • Their latest innovation COLOURFORM (visited by The Prince of Wales this year), takes CupCycling one step further by using the paper fibre from used coffee cups, the process creates 100% plastic-free packaging solutions for businesses. The packaging is already being used by several household brands.
  • Companies that work with James Cropper to create a circular economy for their packaging include coffee shops (Costa), waste management partners (Veolia) and brands (Lush, Selfridges).
  • There’s also a huge amount of work being done to make recycling consistent and easy to do. For example, Leeds is currently trialling an ‘On the Go’ scheme led by Hubbub which ensures people are never more than five minutes away from a recycling station. There’s over 30 cup recycling stations in Leeds City Centre alone, which include Caffè Nero, Costa, McDonald's, Pret a Manger and Starbucks. It’s an amazing example of how collective pledges can bring about real change in cities

The premier trade show, took place on 16 and 17 May at Pier 92, James Cropper demonstrated its Tailor Made paper service, its collection of black papers for packaging, while introducing attendees to its award-winning CupCycling initiative and Colourform moulded fibre solution.

James Cropper works closely with clients to develop custom papers as part of its Tailor Made service. 2018 05 18 100841

In addition to its paper ranges, James Cropper will showcase its pioneering CupCycling initiative, which ‘upcycles’ used disposable cups, giving them another lease of life by transforming them into beautiful papers and packaging.  A great example of the work the business is doing to create value from this waste stream is the closed-loop collaboration with British retailer Selfridges, where cups from the brands own offices and retail outlets are transformed into paper for its iconic yellow shopping bags.

The company will also be presenting Colourform plastic-free packaging that is renewable, recyclable and biodegradable.  Colourform provides all of the premium appeal that discerning consumers expect from packaging and demonstrates a significant environmental benefit when used in preference to plastic alternatives.  Made using 100 per cent renewable paper fibre from well managed forests and recycled coffee cups, it can be manufactured in any colour or shape, is fully recyclable with household paper and is naturally biodegradable – so if it is inadvertently discarded then it will leave no trace in the environment.

Colourform’s mission is to offer brands a sustainable packaging option for their products, without losing the excitement and quality of experience that outstanding packaging provides.  Every Colourform project is bespoke in terms of colour, shape, surface finish and functionality with the packaging used for a wide range of product categories from cosmetics to consumer electronics.  It is already used by environmentally conscious brands such as Lush handmade cosmetics and Floral Street fragrances.

Ivan Iannetta, USA sales manager at James Cropper, said: “It’s a really exciting year for James Cropper, particularly when it comes to our sustainable solutions for the luxury packaging market, and we look forward to demonstrating our expertise in this arena at Luxe Pack.

“Using our 173-year heritage, superior craftsmanship and innovative approach to paper production, we’re able to inspire creativity while helping brands to do their bit for the environment. CupCycling and Colourform are true examples of sustainability and ingenuity colliding and we can’t wait to see how they’re received at the show.”

British master papermaker James Cropper is showcasing a selection of its most sustainable packaging solutions in the latest exhibition at London’s Museum of Brands. The new display – Packaging Innovation Series: Sustainable Packaging – is based at the museum in Notting Hill and opens in partnership with ThePackHub on Thursday 22 February 2018.

2018 02 27 091901Exploring the latest innovations in sustainable packaging, the exhibition presents the ideal opportunity for James Cropper to demonstrate its credentials in an area that has become a major challenge for brands and consumers alike.

Based in the English Lake District, James Cropper is renowned for providing custom-made, prestige papers and packaging for brands from a variety of sectors. On display at the museum are solutions developed for Selfridges, Lush, Floral Street and GF Smith – all created with sustainability at their core.

Both Selfridges and GF Smith have benefitted from James Cropper’s CupCycling™ technology – the world’s first recycling process dedicated to upcycling take-away cups and turning them into beautiful papers.

In a unique, closed-loop solution, Selfridges is recycling cups from its food hall and offices, with the resulting paper being used to create its iconic yellow shopping bags. Meanwhile, GF Smith has worked with James Cropper to create Extract, a range of papers available in 10 colours, with a minimum of five 8oz cups per sheet of 380gsm board.

Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics worked with James Cropper 3D Products as part of the brand’s commitment to finding ethically sourced packaging that can either be reused, recycled or composted. Using COLOURFORM™, plastic-free packaging, the companies collaborated to create a bespoke piece of packaging for Lush’s solid bath oils. The end result is a unique product made from 100 per cent recycled coffee cup fibre.

New fine fragrance brand Floral Street has also used COLOURFORM™ to develop a striking and sustainable packaging solution in a sector notorious for plastic overuse. Bucking the trend of the typical lavish over-packaging used by existing brands, Floral Street opted instead for environmentally friendly elegance with a box made entirely from 100 per cent renewable natural wood fibres from well managed forests. This is a complete packaging solution made from one material which makes recycling very easy.

All of James Cropper’s products on display at the Museum of Brands are fully recyclable with household paper and naturally biodegradable, leaving no trace even if they do end up in landfill.

Matthew Miller, business director at James Cropper 3D Products, said: “Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the impact that certain materials and manufacturing methods are having on the environment. As a result, brands from all industries are looking for sustainable ways to package their products that don’t compromise on design or quality.

“This display shines a spotlight on the fantastic work brands are doing to limit their burden on the environment and we’re honoured to be a part of it.”

British master papermaker James Cropper recently demonstrated its sustainability credentials, along with a number of its products and services at premier packaging show Luxe Pack Monaco.

Offerings highlighted at the exhibition, which took place from 2 to 4 October at Monaco’s Grimaldi Forum, included the company’s extensive range of black papers – a colour that in the world of packaging brings sophistication, class and a timeless appeal.

James Cropper also introduced CupCycling™ technology – the world’s first recycling process dedicated to upcycling takeaway cups. The process aims to drastically reduce the 2.5 billion takeaway cups estimated to be thrown away in the UK each year, save them from landfill and turn them into beautiful papers.

James Cropper partnered with Selfridges on this initiative to reprocess disposable coffee cups collected from its Oxford Street headquarters and stores. The disposable cups are upcycled into paper that is then converted into the retailer’s iconic yellow shopping bags. The final product, which contains 20 per cent cup fibre, was showcased to attendees at Luxe Pack Monaco.

Susan Wilson, group packaging director at James Cropper, said: “Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We recognise that it’s our responsibility to protect the world around us, not only for the benefit of doing business responsibly, but for the long-term health of our community and customers. It’s great to be recognised for the investment we make into reducing our environmental impact and we look forward to continuing working towards a sustainable future.”

Along with CupCycling™, James Cropper’s sustainability initiative with Burneside Community Energy (BCE) – which encourages environmental and social progress in the local community where it operates its business – resulted in the company being shortlisted for the Luxe Pack in Green Award and highly commended during the event.

The paper innovator also showcased examples of bespoke packaging projects developed from its black range, including a collection of gift and presentation packaging for luxury online handbag retailer Zesh, made from a ‘Dark Chocolate’ black developed for the papermaker’s award-winning Cocoa range.

James Cropper works closely with clients to develop bespoke black shades, and prides itself on colour quality and consistency. Its in-house colour lab holds recipes for over 50 shades of black, with four ready-to-order FSC®-certified blacks available from stock.

Susan Wilson added: “We want to help brands to realise the creative potential of black – it’s dark and challenging, but can often be the most powerful of colours. During the exhibition, we were able to demonstrate our portfolio of black papers, along with the technology, science and skill built up over the past 170 years. We have unique capabilities, a portfolio with wide appeal and a bespoke service that can create papers that truly define a brand.”
