Mondi extends its Color Copy original range with launch of ELDFs to meet the growing demand for digitally printed applications and offer more choice in the print market.

Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, extends its Color Copy original flagship range with extra-long digital formats (with lengths up to 1200 mm) to meet the growing demand for digitally printed applications. The extended range allows for a host of new print applications. The papers offer the highest possible quality in digital colour printing and provide customers with the choice between different long-sheet applications (personalised for each customer), both in large scale or single items.

Color Copy original ELDFs are compatible with all major printing machine manufacturers e.g. Konica Minolta, Ricoh, Xerox, Canon, and others. The range is both FSC® and EU Ecolabel certified as well as part of the Green Range, Mondi’s umbrella trademark for sustainable paper solutions, and has a ColorLok® certification for excellent colour reproduction and faster drying in inkjet printing.

“It is always our goal to produce high quality products that meet evolving needs and are sustainable by design. Color Copy original ELDFs are the perfect addition to our longstanding product range as we keep pushing the barrier in innovation.” says Johannes Klumpp, Marketing & Sales Director at Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper.

“The new Color Copy original ELDFs bridge a longstanding gap in the market and work very well on our AccurioPress colour production printers. They offer perfect runnability for our machines that have many advanced capabilities, including auto-duplex banners up to 900 mm, as well as inline finishing options to create ready-to-ship full bleed banners. The double-sided printing with precise front and back registration also made for a compelling choice," says Anja Schappert, Marketing Manager Print Substrates, Konica Minolta Business Solutions Europe.

New technical developments increases demand for ELDFs

The new formats are designed for quality printing needs in the marketing sector, e. g.  high quality brochures and posters in standout format which are particularly attractive for lifestyle and premium brands.

The Color Copy original ELDFs product range is a response to the latest technical developments in digital printing machines. While digital toner production presses were not able to work with long formats, new presses now have the ability to print on extended sheet sizes. By including ELDFs into their portfolio Mondi intends to support OEMs and printers to feature these new functionalities and offer a wider product range especially for high quality marketing collaterals. The supplies can be mill cut and packaged in individually wrapped reams to meet short deadlines.

The process is also more cost-effective for shorter runs as ELDFs maximize productivity through multi-up imposition of smaller jobs like business cards, invitations, direct mailers, and even smaller folding cartons. This can improve productivity by 25 percent.

Color Copy original ELDFs are available in 120, 160, 250 and 300 g/m² and 660x330/889x330/1200x330mm short grain across all Europe.

Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, has successfully developed a new recyclable functional barrier paper range. Designed with protection in mind, this range of certified recyclable barrier paper solutions is fully integrated across Mondi’s value chain—from paper production to the barrier application—and can run on existing filling lines for form-fill-and-seal (FFS) applications.

Mondi’s AegisPaper range reduces the amount of plastic used by replacing it with a renewable resource that has specific mechanical properties, such as puncture resistance, flexibility, printability and barrier protection. The coatings technologies applied to these papers create custom barriers against grease and water vapour and ensure sealability. AegisPapers are suitable for numerous packaging applications within the dry food, frozen food, pet food, confectionery, secondary packaging, toy, e-commerce, flower packaging, and DIY industries.

MNDPR173a

The functional barrier paper can replace plastic packaging that has traditionally been used for FMCG and consumer products. In a first step, Mondi’s collaboration with a European dry pasta producer will reduce the plastic used by 90% and save them 7,5 tonnes of plastic film per year for one of their product ranges. This pasta packaging and other commercialised solutions will be entering the market in the first half of 2021.

“Sustainability is at the centre of our strategy and I am pleased that this continues to be a focus for our customers. Thanks to combining Mondi’s know-how of paper making, coating, printing, converting, pouch and bag making alongside our expertise in selected end-uses for consumers, we make ‘paper where possible, plastic when useful,’ a reality. This launch is a breakthrough for the next generation of sustainable packaging.” said Peter Orisich, CEO, Flexible Packaging and Engineered Materials, Mondi.

Within AegisPaper, there are three grades available for different applications and requirements:

  • AegisPaper select offers a wide range of custom barrier properties
  • AegisPaper 95/5 food is certified as fully recyclable and has the best mechanical properties for food applications
  • AegisPaper reduce provides the thinnest functional barrier paper to reduce amount of packaging material needed

The paper and coatings are all produced and applied in Europe.

Mondi, a leading global packaging and paper manufacturer, has been recognised in this year’s Austrian Green Star Packaging Awards for two recent sustainable packaging innovations developed using its customer-centric approach, EcoSolutions:

  • Two products developed using Mondi’s EcoSolutions approach have been recognised:
    • PerFORMing, a paper-based packaging with patented barrier for cheese slices, developed for Austrian retailer REWE
    • A fully recyclable, mono-material thermoforming film for Austrian meat producer Hütthaler’s meat and sausage products
  • Mondi’s EcoSolutions approach focuses on developing products for customers using paper where possible and plastic when useful

PerFORMing - paper-based packaging with special barrier coating to protect cheese slices

2020 10 02 091040Austria’s biggest retailer REWE worked together with Mondi to launch a more sustainable cheese tray for their organic brand Ja! Natürlich. Mondi developed a special kraft paper, Advantage Formable Brown, to replace rigid plastic trays. Its unique stretch characteristics mean it can be formed into a shallow tray enhanced with a special barrier coating.

This PerFORMing technology combines 80% paper, a renewable and recyclable raw material, with a 20% barrier coating. “The adoption of this package allowed REWE to reduce the amount of plastic used by 70% and the carbon footprint by two-thirds,” said Marko Schuster, COO of Mondi Functional Paper & Films.

Fully recyclable thermoforming plastic film for meat

Mondi was able to reinvent packaging for Austrian meat producer Hütthaler. The packaging was designed for recycling while maintaining optimum barrier properties and replacing a previous, less sustainable, packaging.

“Together with Hütthaler, we developed a mono-material film solution for thermoforming applications that can be fully recycled, and still provides a barrier to protect food. The new film meets high food standards, preserves shelf life and also helps Hütthaler to save on disposal fees due to its recyclability,” said Andreas Koppitz, COO of Mondi's Consumer Flexibles business.

Schuster and Koppitz, on behalf of their teams, expressed how proud they are to win these awards. Both products underscore Mondi’s commitment to developing sustainable solutions that contribute to a better world.

Read more about the fully recyclable thermoforming plastic film here: “Mondi partners with meat producer Hütthaler to create new fully recyclable plastic packaging”

Technical details about PerFORMing:

  • Formable paper packaging with a patented barrier
  • Made from natural brown paper (Advantage Formable Brown)
  • Ideally suited for shallow food trays (e.g. for cheese, meat or fish)
  • High symmetrical stretch for uniform formability
  • Suitable for existing filling lines
  • Results in 70% less plastic used compared to rigid plastic trays
  • 70% CO2 reduction compared to plastic alternative

Technical data for the recyclable thermoforming film:

  • Newly developed plastic film for thermoforming applications, which fulfills all functionalities of previous multi-material structures
  • Completely recyclable through the use of a mono-material
  • Significant improvement of the CO2 balance compared to existing packaging is possible up to 50%
  • Suitable for packaging products with excellent sealability requirements, as top and bottom film are made of the same material
  • Gives food a longer shelf life due to a unique gas barrier

Mondi, global leader in packaging and paper, unveils its latest uncoated fine paper highlights and innovations. As the main supplier of uncoated fine paper in Europe (including Russia), and a tradition of papermaking going back to 1793, Mondi has been keeping an eye on innovation, even in challenging times. Recent developments include new shades to enrich the premium brand PERGRAPHICA®; a creative cooperation with Adobe Stock; an innovative grass paper for premium packaging; and the expansion of Mondi’s successful B2B loyalty programme ‘Color Copy Club’.

  • New, extended PERGRAPHICA® offering for premium graphic paper and luxury packaging market
  • Partnership with Adobe Stock for premium brand PERGRAPHICA®
  • Launch of grass paper for premium packaging under the new brand IQ GRASS+ PACKAGING
  • New highlights on Color Copy: Expansion of loyalty programme “Color Copy Club” to Austria in cooperation with Europapier and EU-RO and ColorLok® certification

"Despite the difficult situation we are all facing this year, we have been keeping close to our customers and working intensively on our new uncoated fine paper products. We are pleased to present the impressive results to the market now," says Gunilla Saltin, CEO Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper. "Innovation, sustainability and partnerships have always been central pillars of our work at Mondi and will continue to be a foundation of our success in the future."

New PERGRAPHICA® shades for premium creative design, print and luxury packaging

Selecting the right paper is at the heart of every creative design, print and packaging project. Mondi has launched 31 new colours in its premium PERGRAPHICA® range to extend its offering. Alongside 10 rich and 10 pale shades, the new portfolio includes a variety of 10 dark and deep shades and the recently launched PERGRAPHICA® Infinite Black, which are ideally suited to luxury packaging for cosmetics, perfumes, wines, champagnes and spirits, as well as boutique bags. The new PERGRAPHICA® deep and dark shades are presented in a stunning ‘Wow Box’ enhanced with special finishing techniques to show how PERGRAPHICA® lends itself perfectly to diverse luxury packaging applications.

Partnership with Adobe Stock for PERGRAPHICA®

To mark the portfolio extension, Mondi is proud to introduce its campaign Catching Feels, developed in a unique digital to analogue partnership with Adobe Stock. The campaign starts on paper with a stunning new lookbook and continues on Mondi´s digital platform for paper lovers, mymondi.net, complemented by virtual events for customers and prospects and many other digital and analogue activities.

As we experience paper with all our senses, Catching Feels takes us on a sensory journey through six feelings with six photographers and illustrators, each chosen for their ability to bring feelings to life. The heart of the Catching Feels campaign is the new lookbook. Drawing on the full range of papers in the new PERGRAPHICA® portfolio, the emotive and technically challenging imagery in the Catching Feels lookbook features two surface finishes, four printing techniques, six paper weights, ten shades and 53 pages of special inks and finishes. The artists featured in the campaign contribute to the Adobe Stock Premium Collection, the premium stock image library, which enhances creative projects and empowers creatives.

2020 09 25 091612

There are a lot of shared values between Adobe Stock and PERGRAPHICA®. Adobe Stock´s motto of inspiring creatives to ‘make something amazing’ is very similar to PERGRAPHICA®’s ‘creatives inspiring creatives’. Mondi’s ‘digilogue’ or ‘digital to analogue’ strategy for uncoated fine paper – the transition from the screen to the page – gave Adobe Stock the opportunity to demonstrate just how well their imagery can leap off the page.

The new PERGRAPHICA® qualities and shades include additional laminated grades up to 400 g/m² and a widened HP Indigo offering. All PERGRAPHICA® papers provide excellent printability on a choice of textures, shades and weights and are perfectly suitable for post-print processing. The full range of PERGRAPHICA® qualities and shades is made in Austria and meets the strict international sustainability standards set by FSCTM as well as EU Ecolabel. They also belong to Green Range, Mondi´s umbrella trademark for sustainable paper solutions. The white shades as well as Infinite Black have a food safety certification.

IQ GRASS+ PACKAGING: launch of a unique grass paper for premium packaging

Partnering with customers for innovation is one of Mondi’s four strategic value drivers. One of the latest innovations using alternative raw materials is IQ GRASS+ PACKAGING which uses fast-growing grass as a fibre source, and was developed in close collaboration with customers. The combination of 30 percent grass fibre and 70 percent fresh fibre from sustainable resources gives this new niche product a natural and unique look and feel making it suitable for premium shopping bags as well as liners for high-quality corrugated and solid board packaging. IQ GRASS+ PACKAGING has a high tear strength compared to typical uncoated fine paper products, is optimised for flexo printing, used for various types of packaging, and has a food safety certification for dry/non-fatty foods. The new material is available to order across Europe from September 2020 onwards. First projects have already been successfully implemented with customers.

Loyalty programme Color Copy Club opens in Austria

In 2019, Mondi successfully launched its loyalty programme ‘Color Copy Club’ in Germany. Now, the B2B platform is being extended to the Austrian market – in an exclusive cooperation with the paper merchant Europapier and EU-RO. The programme was developed to strengthen business relationships and to open new opportunities for cooperation. It addresses resellers, retailers, copy shops as well as commercial digital printers and provides them with bonuses and special promotions.

“It was particularly important to Mondi and Europapier that these bonuses offer real added value to our customers' business. We want to give our customers support for their operational business, personnel, marketing and sales. The club is an active community and a platform for exchange,” says Michael Hicker, Commercial Director Austria at Europapier.

‘Color Copy Club’ in Austria is open to Europapier and EU-RO customers buying Mondi’s digital colour printing paper brand Color Copy. After registering via colorcopyclub.com, customers automatically collect ‘bonus points’ whenever they are buying Color Copy paper through Europapier or EU-RO, which they can exchange for attractive bonuses. Members can also receive further information, promotions and marketing materials via the Color Copy Club online platform.

Mondi has been producing Color Copy for more than 30 years. It is the most well recognised uncoated fine paper brand in Europe1 and the perfect paper for digital printing in offices and professional print-rooms. Color Copy is CO2 neutral, FSCTM certified and available up to 400 g/m2.

Broadening the scope of Color Copy: adding improved inkjet printability with ColorLok® certification

Mondi is continuously advancing Color Copy, the signature collection for digital colour printing. Responding to the trend of an increase in small and home offices and a corresponding increase in inkjet printing, the latest Color Copy development is the ColorLok® certification for Color Copy original. ColorLok® Technology is used during paper production and consists of special additives that ensure high quality print results. The primary benefits of ColorLok® certified papers can be seen in inkjet printing when using pigment inks:

  • Vivid colours: richer, brighter images and graphics
  • Bolder blacks: crisp, sharp text with bolder blacks
  • Faster drying: documents printed with ColorLok® papers dry faster, resulting in less smearing

The ColorLok® certified Color Copy original papers will be available internationally in cut-size from Q4 2020 onwards.

This sustainable solution uses 100% corrugated material. The unique ergonomics of the product made it difficult to find a one-fit solution, but DashV1Box meets all the demands. Different component lengths are accommodated by variable corrugated fittings. Designed by Marco Rammler, Mondi Corrugated Solutions Ansbach.
  • Stabilization Box: answers a dairy customer`s request for a stabilizing solution which would reinforce the whole pallet block and prevent boxes from shifting into the middle – at the same time not obstructing the airway that secures proper cooling for the delicate product. Eva Hrychová, Mondi Corrugated Solutions Bupak, developed this perforated interlay, made from three-layer corrugated board.
  • StripPouch: Mondi and Werner & Mertz’s innovative, 100-percent recyclable pouch leapfrogs sorting and recycling hurdles on the way to “true recyclability.” The new design features a complete mono-material (PE) also for the spout and cap. Detachable printed panels enhance the recyclate quality due to the ability to separate the decorative panels from the pouch after use. Designed by Mondi Consumer Flexibles.

Protector Bags:  The paper-based, ‘envelope-like’ Protector Bags have increased efficiency, reduced workload and lowered overall costs to our customers by more than 70% for packaging and shipping door consoles. The lightweight, 100% recyclable bags also are sustainable by design – requiring less material, using paper instead of plastic, and halving the number of trips needed to move components from place to place. At the same time, the packaging process is now less strenuous for the people involved as closing the bags simple as sealing an envelope.

Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, published an inspiring book and an online video highlighting their new uncoated tinted design paper, Pergraphica Infinite Black. Entitled “Poems in Black”, the new book not only demonstrates creative ways of working with black paper and special finishes, it also explores the mystical nature of the colour black through the medium of poetry. Shortly after publication, “Poems in Black” won the Austrian print and media industry’s 2019 Golden Pixel Award in the tactile sensation category.

Each chapter in the book features an innovative special finishing application on black paper, such as laser-cut patterns, hologram foil, heat-sensitive ink and gold glitter varnish. Opposite those graphic designs, white-on-black printed poems capture the idea represented, written by the brand manager responsible for Pergraphica at Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper, Zoe Truchy.

2019 11 29 092028“The luxury packaging and creative cover segments not only demand the best printability for their materials, they need to be sure that their paper of choice will work with the latest developments in special finishing technology. With ‘Poems in Black’, we prove that Pergraphica Infinite Black fulfils all of these demands with a beautiful book of our own.” says Johannes Klumpp, Marketing & Sales Director at Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper.

With the launch of “Poems in Black”, Mondi also published a video online, which is the result of a collaboration with Lorenz Boegli. The Swiss screen printer, known for pushing the boundaries of his craft, created a double gate brochure in Pergraphica Infinite Black 300 g/m2 using his signature printing technology, RGB print, as it can only be realised on black paper. Boegli was inspired by the Greek myth of Prometheus, who, in his version, stole colours from the gods. “How the colour came to humans” retells this story in modern screen-printing as well as in the medium of film. The video can be watched online at mymondi.net.

“With its satin surface feel, Pergraphica Infinite Black lies between the poles of uncoated and coated paper. It combines the advantages of both poles such as haptics and excellent printing properties such as excellent raster image results and quick drying.” says Lorenz Boegli.

Pergraphica is Mondi’s range of premium uncoated design papers first introduced four years ago. Originally consisting of three different shades of white and rough as well as smooth surfaces, the Pergraphica line was recently extended with Pergraphica Ivory Rough 1.5, a bulky paper for text-rich book applications, and Pergraphica Infinite Black, a deep black paper designed for cover and luxury packaging applications. Pergraphica Infinite Black is available in folio sheets in six different weights from 120 to 350 g/m2. The entire Pergraphica portfolio is made in Austria, meeting the strict international sustainability standards set by FSC™ and the EU Ecolabel. Service standards are equally high, with Mondi’s Neusiedler mill having a good supply of fast-moving Pergraphica formats in stock to ensure quick delivery and long-term availability.
