As one of the forerunners in the global packaging industry, BillerudKorsnäs has received approval for its climate goals by the Science Based Targets initiative. The initiative was initiated by the UN, WWF and the World Resources Institute, aiming at assisting the world's companies to adopt climate targets in accordance with United Nations Paris Agreement.

billkorlogoAlready today BillerudKorsnäs is largely fossil-free with 97.5 percent biofuels used in the own operation. In order to further contribute to reducing climate change, BillerudKorsnäs has adopted new climate targets for 2030 and 2050, which now has been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative. The approved targets, which are in line with what is required for global warming not to exceed two degrees, are to:

  1. by 2030 reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions from own operations and indirect emissions from purchased energy by at least 59 percent compared to 2016 levels. By 2050, the corresponding emissions should be at least 74 percent lower.
  2. by 2030 reduce indirect greenhouse gas emissions from purchases of goods and services (eg transports) by at least 30 percent compared to 2016 levels. By 2050, the corresponding emissions should be at least 70 percent lower.

”The Paris Agreement and UN Sustainable Development Goal 13 "Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts" sends a clear signal to rapidly develop new resource-efficient solutions and replace fossil based with renewable ones. We, as one of the first players in our industry, are therefore very proud to present new climate targets. BillerudKorsnäs and the forest based industry play a key role in the transition to a biobased and sustainable society, not least by offering renewable alternatives to fossil based packaging materials," said Henrik Essén, Senior Vice President Communication and Sustainability at BillerudKorsnäs.

“We congratulate BillerudKorsnäs for having their emission reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. By setting targets that are aligned with the rate of decarbonization needed to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, BillerudKorsnäs is demonstrating its business leadership and positioning itself for success in the low-carbon economy,” said Alberto Carrillo Pineda, Director, Climate Initiatives at CDP ‎and member of the Science Based Targets initiative steering committee.

Albany International Announces New CEO

Albany International Corp. (NYSE:AIN) has just announced its Board of Directors has appointed Olivier Jarrault as President, Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board to succeed Joseph G. Morone, effective March 2.

AIlogo newMr. Jarrault, 56, is a 14-year veteran of Alcoa, where his career culminated in his appointment in 2011 as Executive Vice President and Group President of Alcoa Engineered Products and Solutions (“EPS”), leading a portfolio of global advanced-technology components manufacturing businesses serving a number of markets, including aerospace, industrial gas turbines, commercial transportation, and building and construction. At the helm of EPS until 2016, Jarrault drove, through a combination of organic growth and several acquisitions of high performance materials companies, the transformation of the EPS value-add portfolio into a global multi-material aerospace product and solutions leader. Under Jarrault’s leadership, focused on growth, disciplined execution and operational excellence, all of Alcoa’s downstream businesses successfully increased their financial performance. EPS aerospace customers include Safran, GE, United Technologies, Boeing and Airbus. In his role as EVP and Group President of EPS, Mr. Jarrault had extensive interactions with Alcoa’s investors and Board of Directors.

Mr. Jarrault brings 26 years of aerospace and industrial experience to Albany. Prior to being named Group President of EPS, he served in a number of senior management positions at Alcoa - including as Chief Operating Officer of EPS in 2010 and President of Alcoa Fastening Systems from 2003 to 2009 - as well as at Fairchild Fasteners and LISI Aerospace. Born in Lille, France, Mr. Jarrault earned an MS in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology and an MBA from UCLA, and is a dual citizen of the U.S. and France.

Erkie Kailbourne, Chairman of Albany’s Board of Directors, said, "The Board of Directors is very pleased to welcome Olivier Jarrault as our next President and CEO. Olivier’s experience leading a portfolio of manufacturing businesses across a broad market spectrum – including aerospace, industrial gas turbines, commercial transportation and construction - and his demonstrated talent for organizational leadership, make us confident of his ability to lead Albany’s Machine Clothing and AEC businesses. And given his particular experience in aerospace - addressing the same markets and working with the same customers as Albany’s AEC business segment - combined with his proven track record of leading a global Tier 1 aerospace supplier through a period of significant growth, both organically and through acquisition, he is the ideal person to build upon what Joe Morone has already accomplished, and lead AEC through its next stages of growth and maturity.”

Dr. Joseph G. Morone, Albany’s outgoing President and CEO, added, "In a very short time, I have developed a deep respect for Olivier. He is a strategist, but also hands-on. He is a technology-driven, growth-oriented builder of businesses, but also pays strict attention to financial discipline. He has extensive experience with boards and investors, but stays close to operations, and has extensive experience negotiating long-term, high-value agreements with aerospace customers. In my opinion, he is superbly qualified to lead Albany. I have no doubt that building on Albany’s strengths in both businesses, he’ll take the Company to an entirely new level of capability and performance."

Mr. Jarrault said, "I am privileged to have the opportunity to lead Albany - a company with such a proud and compelling history, with significant strengths and exceptional growth potential. I am excited to engage with the customers, the entire Albany organization and the Board, to continue and further expand the efforts already underway to provide greater value to our customers, and to deliver increased returns for our shareholders."

Reduce waste and increase production

Industrial component supplier, CP Automation, now supplies SmartMotion web guide controllers from converting industry component manufacturer, RE-spa. The controllers improve feed accuracy and reduce waste for anyone winding, unwinding or printing on paper, aluminium, plastic or card.

The SmartMotion controller fuses drive technology with a stepper motor, reducing the amount of wiring and resulting in a single, compact device that can be incorporated into a new machine, or retrofitted to a machine already in use.

The motor is controlled to 1/128 step, to ensure the system is incredibly accurate, quick and almost silent. The high heat dissipation range of the controller also ensures a constant working temperature, which prevents the device from overheating.

2018 02 06 125554

“When operating a printing press in particular, if the web material is not aligned correctly you’re wasting production time and potentially creating unnecessary waste,” said Tony Young, director of CP Automation. “RE-spa web guides eliminate this problem. It uses a sensor to monitor whether the edge of the material is in line and automatically adjusts if not.

“People often consider automation as a large investment in robotics or artificial intelligence (AI). But, in truth, adding something simple like the SmartMotion controller improves the automated process and can save you time and money by reducing scrap material.”

The controller can be supported by a WLigo display, which has been developed to support applications where there are more than one web guide system installed in a facility. This means that plant managers can control and manage all parameters of a system from one remote controller.

RE-spa web guide systems are available from CP Automation, along with the full range of converting machine automation equipment from RE-spa. About CP Automation: CP Automation is a specialist in the repair and replacement of automation equipment including electronic boards, PLCs and Ac and DC drives. It was established to provide an independent maintenance service, without exclusive ties to any manufacturer. However, it does have strong relationships with the principal inverter, encoder, resistors and motor manufacturers.

The IQ portfolio has continuously adapted to customer needs and could therefore build a loyal customer base. The success of the IQ story also rests upon the good partnership between Mondi and Europapier, Mondi’s key distribution partner for the IQ range.

“IQ has always been an essential and reliable part of our long-standing cooperation with Mondi. We are pleased to work now together on promoting IQ papers even further,” says Helmut Limbeck, CEO of Europapier Group. “We very much like the new IQ campaign, which gives the brand a fresher image and also focuses on what IQ paper really stands for - an intelligent solution for all printing needs. Europapier is serving around 10.000 customers with IQ papers, which is an impressive proof point of this statement.”

The communicative power of IQ

Intelligence is defined as the mental quality that enables one to learn from experience and adapt to new situations. "This is exactly what our IQ papers stand for in the printing industry as they are versatile and can be easily adapted to all printing situations,” highlights Johannes Klumpp the story of the “Intelligent Paper Brand”.

Thirty-six colours and a grammage range from 60 up to 400 g/m² show the great diversity of the IQ portfolio. Symbolic for this diversity, new visuals were designed for all the sub-brands of the office and professional printing portfolio, each relating to the concept of intelligence. For its “high-performance paper” IQ PREMIUM a high-tech robot represents the enhanced productivity and quality the paper gives you in the work place. A bust of Leonardo da Vinci is featured on the new packaging of IQ ALLROUND, linking one of humankind’s greatest thinkers and multi-talents to a paper with perfect runnability that is the solid all-rounder among the IQ range.

 Performance driven. Every day.

Not only is IQ versatile, it is also extremely reliable. Addressing end-customers’ challenges with printing, Mondi introduced the “Performance Champion” for their IQ paper portfolio. Provided it has been stored under proper conditions, Mondi ensures 99.99% trouble-free runnability of its paper on copiers, printers and other office equipment.

In addition, IQ SMOOTH and IQ PREMIUM both feature ColorLok® Technology, which enhances the quality of inkjet printing. With ColorLok®, pigments are held close to the surface, resulting in more vivid colours, bolder blacks and faster drying time.

Sustainable. Every day.

As with all Mondi uncoated fine papers, IQ is part of the company’s Green Range, which symbolises high environmental performance in sustainable paper production. IQ papers fulfil Mondi’s Green Range criteria for either FSC® or PEFC™ certification for responsibly managed forests. All Mondi IQ papers also carry the EU Ecolabel.
