andIn the third quarter of 2015, international technology Group ANDRITZ showed a favorable business development.

Sales amounted to 1,583.5 MEUR in the third quarter of 2015 and were thus 8.2% higher than the figure in the third quarter of 2014 (1,463.5 MEUR), with all four business areas increasing their sales. In the first three quarters of 2015, Group sales rose by 11.3% to 4,589.1 MEUR compared to last yearʼs reference period (Q1-Q3 2014: 4,122.9 MEUR).

The order intake in the third quarter of 2015, at 1,187.6 MEUR, was 25.4% below the high figure for the previous yearʼs reference period (Q3 2014: 1,591.5 MEUR), which included some large orders in the PULP & PAPER and METALS business areas. In connection with the decline in order intake it has to be mentioned that the large order awarded to ANDRITZ by Fibria in July 2015 to supply equipment for a new pulp mill in Brazil was booked in the fourth quarter of 2015; typical order values of comparable projects are about 600 MEUR. In the first three quarters of 2015, the order intake amounted to 3,767.6 MEUR and was thus 17.6% below the high previous year’s reference figure (Q1-Q3 2014: 4,571.6 MEUR).

Earnings of the ANDRITZ GROUP developed favorably. In the third quarter of 2015, EBITA rose to 110.1 MEUR, which is an increase of 9.0% compared to the previous yearʼs reference figure (Q3 2014: 101.0 MEUR). The EBITA margin amounted to 7.0% (Q3 2014: 6.9%). As announced at the end of August 2015, around 55 MEUR of financial provisions were booked in the reporting period for optimization of the value chain at Schuler. These provisions were partly offset by project-related one-off improvements in the amount of approximately 30 MEUR in the PULP & PAPER business area. After adjustment of these extraordinary effects, the Groupʼs EBITA amounted to 135.1 MEUR and the EBITA margin to 8.5% in the third quarter of 2015. Earnings also increased substantially in the first three quarters of 2015. At 295.0 MEUR, the EBITA was 25.9% higher than the figure for the previous yearʼs reference period (Q1-Q3 2014: 234.4 MEUR), while the EBITA margin amounted to 6.4% (Q1-Q3 2014: 5.7%). Excluding the extraordinary effects booked in the third quarter of 2015, the EBITA increased to 320.0 MEUR and the EBITA margin to 7.0%.

Net income (without non-controlling interests) in the first three quarters of 2015 reached 181.3 MEUR (Q1-Q3 2014: 123.6 MEUR).

On the basis of this business development, the project activity in the ANDRITZ business areas, and the order backlog as of end of September 2015, ANDRITZ currently expects an increase in sales and net income for 2015 compared to the previous year. However, if the economic weakness looming in the emerging economies (particularly China) worsens in the coming months and the global economy further weakens, this could have a negative impact on ANDRITZ’s business development.

2015 10 05 093226International technology Group ANDRITZ successfully completed the supply and ramp-up of a new digester for Brazilian pulp and paper producer Suzano. The continuous digester, installed at Suzano's mill in Suzano city, São Paulo state, started up in May 2015 and replaces existing batch digesters as well as a continuous digester, thus further reducing production costs. It is designed to increase the mill’s output of bleached eucalyptus kraft (BEK) pulp by 33,000 metric t/a, to a total of 550,000 t/a.

"The learning curve for the new digester went really well and after 10 days we already reached nominal capacity,” says José Alexandre de Morais Suzano’s Industrial Director. The investment project was executed precisely as planned with no loss of production. All of the connections to the new digester were made during a regular maintenance shutdown planned for the mill.

The equipment supplied by ANDRITZ helps to further improve pulp quality while at the same time cooking yield is increased, thus leading to lower wood consumption. Due to the improved bleachability, bleaching chemical consumption is decreased. In addition, the new technology reduces natural gas consumption at the mill. The investment was considered important by Suzano to modernize equipment installed in the 1970s.

andInternational technology Group ANDRITZ showed solid business development in the first half of 2015 in a still challenging overall economic environment.

The key financial figures developed as follows:

  • In the first half of 2015, sales amounted to 3,005.6 MEUR, which is an increase of 13.0% compared to the previous year’s reference period (H1 2014: 2,659.4 MEUR). In the second quarter of 2015, sales rose by 11.2% compared to last year’s reference figure, reaching 1,601.3 MEUR (Q2 2014: 1,439.9 MEUR).
  • Order intake amounted to 2,580.0 MEUR in the first half of 2015 (-13.4% versus H1 2014: 2,980.2 MEUR). While the order intake in the HYDRO business area only dropped slightly (-2.5% versus H1 2014), order intake in the other business areas dropped – in some cases substantially: PULP & PAPER -14.0%, METALS -25.4%, SEPARATION -9.5%. In the second quarter of 2015, order intake amounted to 1,149.4 MEUR (-7.2% versus Q2 2014: 1,238.0 MEUR).
  • The order backlog as of June 30, 2015, amounted to 7,349.0 MEUR (-2.2% versus December 31, 2014: 7,510.6 MEUR).
  • Earnings and profitability developed favorably. In the first half of 2015, the EBITA rose by 38.6% to 184.9 MEUR (H1 2014: 133.4 MEUR) and the EBITA margin to 6.2% (H1 2014: 5.0%). In the second quarter of 2015, the EBITA amounted to 111.5 MEUR (+31.5% versus Q2 2014: 84.8 MEUR), and the EBITA margin increased to 7.0% (Q2 2014: 5.9%). This positive development is mainly due to the HYDRO and PULP & PAPER business areas, which achieved a substantial increase in profitability compared to the previous year’s reference period.
  • Net income (without non-controlling interests) rose considerably in the first half of 2015 and amounted to 113.9 MEUR (+70.8% versus H1 2014: 66.7 MEUR).

Wolfgang Leitner, President and CEO of ANDRITZ: “In view of the unchanged difficult economic environment, we are satisfied with the business development in the first half of 2015. However, project and investment activity has slowed down in some of our end markets, in some cases substantially, and this activity has also become increasingly volatile. Hence, we shall continue the structural measures already implemented in the past few years in order to adapt our value chain to these changed market conditions and thus increase our flexibility.”

Based on the current project activity in the ANDRITZ business areas and on the order backlog as of the end of June 2015, ANDRITZ currently expects an increase in sales and net income for the 2015 business year compared to the previous year. If, however, the economic weakness in the emerging countries (particularly in China) continues in the coming months, the global economy suffers any severe setbacks, or there is major turmoil in the international foreign currency and financial markets, this could have a negative impact on ANDRITZ’s business development. This could necessitate organizational and capacity adjustments in individual business areas and thus result in financial provisions that could negatively impact the earnings of the ANDRITZ GROUP.

The order comprises the supply of a fiber line with 2-stage refining to ensure lowest possible energy demand and high fiber quality, as well as a two-stage bleaching system with minimum chemical consumption. Six counter-current washing stages are to reduce contaminants so that exceptionally clean pulp can be produced at low chemical oxygen demand. In addition, the ANDRITZ washing technology keeps fresh water consumption and effluent levels to a minimum.

The new fiber line uses available synergies with the existing eucalyptus pulping line at ITC Bhadrachalam. The effluent will be evaporated, the clean condensate re-used, and the white liquor from the kraft mill will be used as alkali source in the new BCTMP fiber line.

The service package includes PrimeCoat Stratos, a thermal solution for full-face coating and spot repairs. With this new coating technology, which can be implemented directly at the customerʼs site, the Yankee’s strength can be increased by up to 20% and porosity reduced by 2% (compared to the market standard). This results in better heat conductivity and operating efficiency. In the past three years, PrimeCoat Stratos has been applied successfully on more than 25 steel Yankees, most recently for the two tissue machines supplied to Shin-Ei Paper, Japan.

In addition, the ANDRITZ service package offers a new mobile grinding unit and on-the-run measurements. The grinding unit can extend the lifetime of the Yankee, while the measurements – most recently conducted at C&S Paper, China, and Zellstoff Pöls, Austria – improve runability, safety, and performance of the system.

The new service package is available for existing machines as well as for new machines (regardless of the supplier) and is designed especially for the production of tissue, paper and board, machine-glazed paper, and cigarette paper.
