Multi Umwelttechnologie AG has over 15 years experience with culture media for immobilising micro-organisms during the treatment of sewage water.

During this time, we have used almost every known carrier in many different large plants, types of sewage water and areas of application. The knowledge that we have gained as a result, along with the comprehensive data material, enables us to make a well-founded assessment of the specific performance data of the in some cases extremely different carriers.

Since Multi Umwelttechnologie AG was at no time linked to a particular supplier, we were able - on the basis of the operational experience gained - to undertake targeted optimisation either of the carrier itself or the process conditions. The emphasis here was on minimising operational problems arising from the weaknesses of "conventional" culture media that these days cannot be overlooked.

The thorough implementation of our requirements for an optimum carrier led to one result: the Mutag BioChip™. From our point of view, this is currently the "best available carrier" specifically for purifying types of sewage water that are difficult to treat.

The Indian paper industry today failed to get any relief from the Delhi High Court over the government's decision of not imposing safeguard duty on imports of coated paper and paper board.

A division bench Justice B D Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul declined to give ex-parte stay over notification issued by the Director General of Safeguards on November 13, 2009, in this regard.

However, the court issued notices to the government and the Director General of Safeguards (DGS) and directed them to file reply to the petition filed by domestic paper producers - ITC, Ballarpur Industries, J K Paper and their lobby group India Papaer Manufacturer Association (IPMA).

The petition filed by leading paper producers and IPMA, requested the court to set aside the notification issued by DGS which falls under the Ministry of Finance.

CPI’s profits take a hit in tough market

CPI's net profit dropped 4.2 per cent to $2.04m for the first half of 2009-10 while earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) fell 27.6 per cent to $4.2m. The Australian paper giant says trading conditions remain difficult with volumes still below the levels two years ago.

In a telling insight into the current state of the domestic printing industry the company also reports its revenues from ordinary activities are down 24.6 per cent to $209m, from the $277m it recorded in the latter half of 2008.

CPI told shareholders today that in view of the still difficult conditions in the industry it has determined not to declare a dividend for the time being. CPI's share price plummeted 22 per cent following the release of its figures.

Bernard Cassell, managing director of CPI says, "During the six months to December 31, conditions remained difficult due to the depressed levels of activity in the economy generally, and the printing industry particularly. Volumes were significantly affected with anecdote evidence suggesting the industry volumes were down by 20 per cent."

Cassell also says that in line with the difficult conditions the Group has focused strongly on cost and balance sheet control. He says, "Cost control initiatives which had begun in the previous financial year, were continued and consolidated. Overheads for the first six months were 17 per cent below the prior year, exceeding the targets that had been set."

Commenting on the decision to sell its Graphics Division, with Komori presses, to Ferrostaal Cassell says, "The opportunity was taken to further rationalise product ranges and clear out discontinued lines. This process is now well advanced."

michael clarkThe Paper Industry Gold Medal Association is pleased to announce that the Gold Medal for 2010 has been awarded to Michael Clark.

The Award Committee met on the 25th January at Stationers' Hall under the independent chairmanship of the current Master of the Stationers' Company, Mr Richard Brewster.

The medal will be presented to Michael at the Charter Dinner of the Stationers' Company on 5th May 2010.

Michael retired from full time employment with M-Real in 2008, but remained active in retirement as Chairman of PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) until December 2009.

The award recognises Michael's contribution to the wider industry over many years. Although primarily concerned with the cartonboard market, Michael recognised that the industry needed to present a united front when faced with wider issues such as the introduction of Packaging Waste Regulations, the poor perception of the industry by NGOs and the wider public, or the need to embrace environmental issues such as forest certification proactively and whole-heartedly.papergoldmedal

His contributions to PIMO (Paper Industry Materials Organisation), the CPI (Confederation of Paper Industries), ProCarton, and PEFC have been positive and constructive. At the same time he was active within the PAA (Paper Agents Association) where he served on Council for a number of years and completed a two year term as President. He continued to support the Association's Environmental Committee after his retirement from M-Real.
In nominating him, the PAA said "The Paper Agents Association believes that Michael's commitment to the establishment of meaningful industry bodies and fair representation for all branches of the industry in its relationships with Government, the EU and NGOs uniquely qualify him for consideration as a recipient of the Gold Medal."

A CEO's Perspectives

ceo-2009CEO Perspectives in the Forest, paper & packaging industry worldwide - 2010 Edition

PricewaterhouseCoopers recently conducted its third series of in-depth interviews with CEOs in the Forest, Paper and Packaging (FPP) industry. We interviewed 33 executives from leading companies around the world. The objective, as with the first two sets of interviews in 2006 and 2007, was to learn more about executives' opinions of the state of the industry, the key issues it faces and its future direction.

Our last edition of CEO Perspectives grappled with major changes in the world in which the FPP industry operates. The years 2008 and 2009 saw global credit markets, and then the world economy, go into freefall. The crisis exacerbated existing declines in some markets and precipitated steep drops in demand in many others, particularly in mature markets.

It has also highlighted the split between mature and emerging markets; China and India experienced much shorter and less severe shocks than did Western Europe and North America. So far, the FPP industry has seen relatively few business failures, even in struggling markets – but very few companies can point to real successes either. So how will the industry reshape itself to meet future challenges? Our study takes a look at the types of transformation needed in the industry, and elaborates on four key trends in the following discussion.
