2014-10-17 103605 rov axeThe outstanding performance of NOV Mono pumps in demanding applications has again been highlighted by a recent project in Sweden. One of the country’s leading pulp and paper producers has invested in two Mono E-Range progressing cavity (PC) pumps which will be used in conjunction with the existing Mono™ equipment already in use at the plant in Stockholm.

Faced with the need to increase the capacity to pump coating compound from a storage vessel out to a paper coating machine, the customer approached pump solutions provider, AxFlow, who are a distributor of Mono products in Sweden. “The coating compound involved is extremely abrasive and highly viscous,” says AxFlow’s Sales Engineer in Sweden, Hans Lundkvist. “This meant that the pumps chosen had to be rugged enough to provide reliable performance and we know that Mono’s E-Range pumps would work perfectly as they are well proven in this type of application.

“As the customer already had a number of vertically mounted Mono pumps installed and was very satisfied with their performance, a pair of Mono E-Range belt-driven pumps were the obvious choice when they needed to increase capacity. The fact that they could be vertically mounted was another added benefit, as floor space was limited with this particular application.”

The coating clay in applications such as this are highly shear sensitive and can contain up to 75% solids, including kaolin, marble, carbonates and titanium oxide. It can also dry instantly, making it essential that the pumps used can prevent moisture loss, while still providing a gentle pumping action to avoid shear damage to the coating clay during transfer.

The vertically-mounted high pressure E-Range pumps offer outstanding reliability and efficiency for applications where particularly abrasive or viscous fluids are being handled.  They incorporate a helical rotor turning within a resilient rubber stator, providing a smooth low shear action which ensures the integrity of the coating mix remains intact. The pumps also feature Mono’s unique Flexishaft™ drive system that provides a single component link between the rotary motion of the drive shaft and the eccentric motion of the helical rotor.  The reduced number of moving parts in the drive train eliminates wear and makes lubrication unnecessary, eliminating the risk of contamination.  The Flexishaft design extends routine maintenance intervals and carries a 10-year warranty.

Mono’s PC pumps are regularly used in pulp and paper applications to handle a variety of aggressive liquids and slurries from coating compound and black liquor through to lime and waste sludges. Their positive displacement action allows for accurate volume control, while their rugged construction ensures long life, reliable operation and minimal downtime.

AxFlow Finland acquires TM-Palvelu OY

AxFlow Oy in Helsinki Finland, part of the AxFlow Group has announced its acquisition of TM-Palvelu Oy, a well established pump service and piping contractor in Finland.

The take-over which was formalised in May 31, 2011, is a major development for AxFlow Oy as it provides the company with a substantial in-house competence in pump maintenance and after sales services.

axflowLogoBigTM-Palvelu has been established in 1988 in Kotka, one of the main port-cities in Southern Finland. From this base, the company has developed its strong foothold in the service of power plants and liquid terminals.  The other key segments include the chemical and pulp & paper industries. Under the stewardship of founder Pentti Anttila, TM-Palvelu has built up a fine team of skilled service technicians, most of them certified to work in the oil & gas and energy plants.

Announcing the acquisition, AxFlow Managing Director Harri Lindroos said: “Service is a major growth area for AxFlow Finland. By bringing TM-Palvelu into AxFlow we strengthen our service capabilities and gain the additional engineering resources that will allow us to expand in, for us new, segments such as the liquid terminals. The combination of the resources and competence of TM-Palvelu and AxFlow will bring considerable benefits for both companies’ existing customers and prospects in a form of a wide product portfolio, professional pump maintenance and after sales services.”

axflowLogoBigAxFlow has announced that it has taken on the European distribution of Warren Rupp’s AirVantage compressed air metering device for Sandpiper 2 and 3-inch metallic AODD pumps.

By managing the compressed air demand of the pump to the application, considerable energy savings can be made.

For users of Air Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD) pumps a large percentage of the operating costs are attributable to compressed air. According to Warren Rupp, the power cost to run compressors makes up almost 70% of the total cost of the compressed air system, and 90% of most air compressor problems are located within the system itself. This is due to system layout, leaks, airline sizing, air treatment, piping materials and equipment specification. All of these issues reduce the run-time of compressed air systems, so improving efficiency is concentrated on the supply side. However, operators need to consider the demand side in order to ensure that equipment specifications are delivering efficient performance.

Self-powered by an internal generator that produces 12V AC, the AirVantage is available both as a complete pump and as a centre-section upgrade kit for existing installed pumps including both ball and flap valve construction. For intrinsically safe conditions, it is also available with an explosion-proof (ATEX certified) electrical assembly for operation in hazardous areas. The unit features an advanced learning programme that automatically adapts and controls the amount of air used under a variety of condition points, saving energy at the same time as maintaining a comparable flow.

AirVantage uses sensors to read pump velocity and switches the pilot valve during mid-stroke, allowing momentum or inertia to complete the pump stroke but without filling the diaphragm completely with air. This still moves fluid through the pump at comparable flow, but without consuming as much air. The sensor in the centre section of the pump reads the pump velocity and communicates this information with a microchip that calculates the pump’s ideal optimum point. This controls the amount of air that enters the diaphragm chambers, switching air to either side of the pump before the pump completes a stroke. As a result of employing a monitoring system that reads velocity, AirVantage can adapt as the pump’s condition point changes from low discharge pressure to high discharge pressure, and allow more or less air to complete the stroke continuously optimising energy consumption.

Reducing the volume of compressed air used to drive the AODD pump will create other benefits for the user other than just contributing to energy savings. By operating more efficiently there is less wear on the compressed air systems and the pumps which lead to longer working life and reduced maintenance and improved plant productivity.
