Revenue of Mondi Group in 2012 amounted to €5.8 billion, compared to €5.74 billion a year ago, the company said in its full-year report.

"Continued strong profitability resulted in a return on capital employed (ROCE) of 13.7%, once again above our through-the-cycle target of 13%", company's CEO David Hathorn noticed.

While Western European markets remained soft, impacted by both short-term cyclical and longer-term structural challenges, demand growth in Eastern Europe (excluding the CIS region) was marginally positive. Market demand in Russia was down on a very strong 2011. In aggregate, Mondi’s sales volumes for uncoated fine paper were on a similar level to that of the previous year.

In Europe, selling prices were stable throughout the year with average benchmark European uncoated fine paper prices declining by 1% in the year, while marginal price increases were achieved in the Russian market.

Russia entered WTO in August 2012 and, as a consequence, import duties for uncoated fine paper will reduce by 2.5% per year until they reach a level of 5% in 2016. Implementation is due to start in 2013. The reduction in trade duties, coupled with new capacity coming on stream in both Russia and France, is expected to place some pressure on pricing in the short to medium term, Mondi said in its full-year report.

The business in 2012 benefited from lower input costs, driven by lower pulp costs for the unintegrated Neusiedler operation, partially offset by higher wood costs in Russia and generally higher energy costs.

Fixed costs were higher, largely due to a higher depreciation charge offset by ongoing cost optimisation initiatives.

Mondi professional printing papers will be on display at stand I18 and used for print applications by various original equipment manufacturers (OEM). Mondi has sponsored Impika, CANON OCÉ, Hunkeler, HP, Kodak and KBA with digital printing papers for print demonstrations throughout the trade fair.

dns newMondi’s focus on the digital printing market continues into 2013. At Hunkeler Innovationsdays, the international packaging and paper producer will present its expanded high-speed inkjet portfolio, which comprises a comprehensive offering of grammages and shades for this growing market.

“In the past year, we have expanded Mondi’s high-speed inkjet portfolio to offer more variety and greater options for businesses and printers. Current printing demands, with applications that vary from transpromo and direct mail to book printing, require a portfolio that offers a wide range of optics, haptics, environmental options and accreditations,” says Johannes Klummp, Marketing and Sales Director for Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper.

At stand I18, Mondi will feature its smooth, high-white, recycled, off-white and coated high-speed inkjet papers optimised for both dye and pigment inks. These include DNS® high-speed inkjet CF (coated feel), DNS® high-speed inkjet NF (natural feel), 100% recycled NAUTILUS® high-speed inkjet, BIO TOP 3® high-speed inkjet and DNS® enhanced color inkjet, which is Mondi’s first high-speed inkjet paper with a pigment-coated inkjet surface.

Klummp adds, “BIO TOP 3® high-speed inkjet, for example, is our off-white recommendation for book printing. It is a TCF paper with no optical brightening agents and has a natural uncoated feel. On the other hand, DNS® high-speed inkjet CF could be the perfect fit for stylized marketing applications that require a high-white, smooth coated feel.”

Hunkeler Innovationdays also marks the debut of DNS® enhanced color inkjet to a broader professional printing market. As a pigmented paper, DNS® enhanced color inkjet delivers a higher colour density, allowing dye inks to reach density levels comparable to pigment ink. The inclusion of a pigmented grade to Mondi’s high-speed inkjet portfolio adds a further dimension to an already varied assortment.

With the growing demand for CO2 offsetting within the printing industry, Mondi also offers a CO2 neutral option for all high-speed inkjet papers as well as 100% recycled NAUTILUS® SuperWhite. Mondi’s colour laser paper Color Copy is fully CO2 neutral.

All Mondi-branded papers are part of the Green Range of eco-conscious papers that are FSC® or PEFC™ certified, 100% recycled or TCF (totally chlorine free). More information about Mondi’s complete digital printing portfolio is available at www.mondigroup.com/printing.

The launch of Mondi’s 2013 Color Copy campaign showcases haute couture made from Color Copy and offers a chance to win trips to the world’s fashion capitals

colorcopy 2International packaging and paper manufacturer Mondi launched its new haute couture Color Copy campaign with the slogan, “Only the original makes you look so good”. Color Copy has led the way as an original on the market since its launch in 1989 as the world’s first paper specially developed for digital colour laser systems and more recently as the first CO2 neutral digital colour laser paper. Mondi’s new campaign features six haute couture designs made from Color Copy through a collaboration with design students from the University of Art and Design in Linz together with the Hetzendorf fashion school in Vienna, Austria.  From these six designs, two will be used in the Color Copy advertisements throughout 2013. The campaign kicks-off with an online game (www.colorcopy.com) that will run until 30 June 2013, which features all six designs and gives participants a chance to win one of 100 iTunes vouchers and one of three trips to the world’s fashion capitals: Milan, Paris and New York.

“Our new Color Copy campaign is about making a good impression with high-quality print outs, whether for an important office presentation, a photo book or marketing collateral. In short, when your printed material looks good, you look good,” explains Johannes Klumpp, Marketing and Sales Director for Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper, Europe and International.

The students selected various grammages from the entire Color Copy portfolio, experimenting with the potential offered by using different weights and textures. Over the last 21 years, the Color Copy portfolio has grown to include a broad range of shades and textures with Color Copy, Color Copy style, Color Copy coated glossy, Color Copy coated silk and Color Copy indigo, an HP 3-star certified paper for HP Indigo digital presses. Using Color Copy papers as the base material for their designs, the students explored the medium’s potential and versatility by washing, ironing and using papier mache, for example, to achieve their sartorial concepts. In the end, Mondi selected six final designs for a high-fashion photo shoot with renowned photographer Mark Glassner.

colourcopy upright“Color Copy’s optimum smooth surface is key for delivering outstanding print quality. Furthermore, the even toner adhesion, brilliant colour reproduction and natural contrasts achieved make it an ideal medium for our haute couture marketing material,” Klumpp adds.

The Color Copy advertisements for 2013 feature designs by Miriam Kohlhofer and Moritz Gottschalk. All haute couture designs created for the campaign are featured in the online game (www.colorcopy.com) and the behind-the-scenes video showing the making of the campaign (www.youtube.com/TheGreenrange).

Color Copy is part of Mondi’s eco-conscious Green Range and is CO2 neutral, FSC® certified, and bears the EU Ecolabel – a symbol for products and services deemed to have a lesser impact on the environment. The new digital colour printing paper falls within the company’s offering of smooth high-white papers for a broad spectrum of applications that demand high-impact colour saturation.

Minerals Technologies Inc., has announced  that it has signed a commercial agreement with Mondi S.A., a division  of the Mondi Group, to provide Fulfill(TM) E-325, a new, high-filler technology, at the paper company's Merebank paper mill in Durban, South Africa. This is the second commercial agreement with an affiliate of the Mondi Group; the first was with their paper mill at Ruzomberok, Slovakia, which was signed in July.

Unique High-Filler Technology Provides Significant Cost Savings in Reduced Fiber Consumption by Increasing PCC Filler Usage

Minerals Technologies now has 10 agreements with paper mills that have adopted the Fulfill(TM) E-325 technology that the company introduced in late 2010. These agreements confirm the commercial progress of the Fulfill(TM) brand, a portfolio of high-filler technologies that offers papermakers a variety of efficient, flexible solutions that decreases dependency on natural fiber and reduces costs. The Fulfill(TM) E-325 series allows papermakers to increase loading levels of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), which replaces higher cost pulp, and increases PCC usage without compromising product quality or performance.

"We are very pleased that this fine papermaker has adopted our new FulFill(TM) technology at another of its major papermaking facilities, which will allow them to produce quality paper at lower cost," said Joseph C. Muscari, chairman and chief executive officer of Minerals Technologies. "The 10 commercial agreements we now have with papermakers around the world reaffirms the revitalization of our new product pipeline and of our commitment to advance our technology leadership throughout our global satellite network."

The Mondi Group's key operations are located in central Europe, Russia and South Africa. The company employees 23,400 people across 28 countries worldwide. The Mondi Merebank Mill in Durban, South Africa, produces a range of office papers including the premium South African brand, Mondi Rotatrim. Minerals Technologies has operated a satellite at the Merebank mill since October 1997.

PCC is a specialty pigment for filling and coating high-quality paper. By substituting Minerals Technologies' PCC for more expensive wood fiber, customers are able to produce brighter, higher quality paper at lower cost. In 1986, Minerals Technologies originated the satellite concept for making and delivering PCC on-site at paper mills and the concept was a major factor in revolutionizing papermaking in North America. Today, the company has 56 satellite plants in operation or under construction around the world and continues to lead the industry with consistent quality and technical innovation.

Vienna, July 25th 2011 – The newly expanded digital printing portfolio from Mondi will be presented in the UK at the Cross Media exhibition in London from 3rd-4th September 2012 on stand 31. “Cross Media is an excellent opportunity for Mondi’s digital printing experts to speak directly with printers, marketers and agencies about their digital printing needs, the technologies they use, and types of print applications they require. In 2010, we began hosting Digital Specialists Forums across Europe to keep our customers informed about new developments in digital printing, and new applications using bridging technologies and cross-media marketing; therefore, we see Cross Media as a valuable initiative for businesses.”

Nautilussuperwhiteco2This year Mondi launched a new professional printing campaign to highlight its papers tailored to specific digital printing technologies. Over the past two years the paper producer has further expanded its professional portfolio to include digital printing papers for digital dry toner, HP Indigo, high-speed inkjet, and hybrid printing technologies. Mondi, the global paper and packaging manufacturer, was one of 1,850 exhibitors at drupa 2012. Despite the decrease in attendance from drupa 2008 (drupa reported 315,500 visitors – a decrease of 75,000), Johannes Klumpp, Marketing and Sales Director for Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper, contends that drupa 2012 lacked none of the innovation and dynamism that is now synonymous with the printing and paper trade fair. “There were a lot of exciting new developments at this year’s drupa and a sense that the industry is gaining momentum in terms of new digital and hybrid printing technologies,” said Klumpp.

A Mondi highlight at drupa was the official signing of the HP Indigo Preferred Media Partner Cooperation Agreement for Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). “We are very pleased that Mondi has become UFP Image_DNS_Indigo_2378part of HP Indigo’s Preferred Partner programme and we look forward to working more closely together to meet our mutual customer’s growing demand for high quality media needs.” said Edna Mannheim, Director Worldwide Supplies and Media.

She added, “Marketing collaborations, training activities for customers, and a focus on growth in the digital printing industry are key initiatives our companies will be driving forward.  Additionally, Mondi’s participation in Dscoop exhibits the type of leadership and participation we look for in media partners, and will enable their continued influence and support for HP Indigo customers.”

In addition to HP, Mondi sponsored 16 other OEMs and machine manufacturers with professional printing paper amounting to 100 tonnes. “Print technology is evolving quickly and we feel such collaborations are integral in fostering new market developments,” said Klumpp. “Landa’s Nanographic Printing™ presses were a major focus at drupa and we were very pleased that Landa used our NAUTILUS® SuperWhite on the B2 sheetfed Landa S7 Nanographic Printing Press.”

While providing an excellent opportunity to build upon existing relationships with leading OEMs, according to Johannes Klumpp, the lower attendance rates for drupa 2012 did not diminish sales opportunities. In fact, drupa’s recently published post-fair statistics suggest an increase in top management and decision makers at this year’s drupa. “We gained a high number of leads from across the globe and met a number of new contacts from India, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America,” said Klumpp.

btop3In a “Raceink” themed area at the Mondi booth, the company held hourly high-speed inkjet printing demonstrations on an Océ ColorStream 3500 high-speed inkjet system with a cutting line provided by Hunkeler. Particularly interesting for visitors looking for brand new high-speed inkjet printing papers, Mondi also previewed its 100% recycled NAUTILUS® high-speed inkjet and Totally Chlorine Free bleached (TCF) BIO TOP 3® high-speed inkjet – both papers scheduled for market launch early this summer.

Mondi’s professional printing portfolio foregrounds paper classifications (haptics, optics and environmental accreditations) and printing technology to facilitate easy navigation between brand characteristics and application suitability. The company’s steady product growth last year brought the launch of 3-star HP certified Color Copy indigo and DNS® indigo as well as DNS® high-speed inkjet and the hybrid printing papers DNS® performance and BIO TOP 3® next.

These latest innovations are part of Mondi’s ongoing developments to provide sustainably produced papers that meet the demands of the growing digital printing market. Moreover, as of 2012 all Mondi branded papers meet eco-conscious Green Range criteria and are FSC® or PEFC™ certified or 100% recycled or Totally Chlorine Free bleached (TCF).
