At the 6th edition of this event, the company was awarded for its outstanding commitment to improve paper recycling technology

2017 10 20 074127The Natural project has enabled Lucart to receive an important European award. For the innovative nature of its project and for the challenges faced by the Group in implementing it, the company was chosen as the winner by a committee of excellence: Lisa Kretschmann, Managing Director of the European Federation of Envelope Manufacturers, Simona Bonafè, Italian Member of the European Parliament, Inés Ayala Sender, Spanish Member of the European Parliament, Ferran Rosa, Policy Officer at Zero Waste Europe, and Rudi Bressa, environmental journalist.

The project that Lucart has been developing in partnership with Tetra Pak® since 2010 has introduced a complete circular economy model for paper, thanks to an innovative technology that separates the cellulose fibres in beverage cartons from polyethylene and aluminium parts, without the use of substances that are harmful to humans or the environment. In this way, two new high-quality raw materials are produced. Fiberpack®, the paper used for the hygiene products in Lucart's Natural lines, is obtained from cellulose fibres. The company has also obtained a material called AL.PE.® from polyethylene and aluminium. This raw material is used to produce innovative systems for the dispensing of tissue products but also for pallets, mooring poles in Venice and floating platforms for wheelchair access and other commonly used items, which are all recycled and recyclable when they reach the end of their life cycle.

Lucart has invested approximately 10 million euros in resources and in the development of two of the Group’s plants – in Diecimo, in the province of Lucca, and in Laval sur Vologne, France – to develop industrial systems that are suitable for the treatment of Tetra Pak® beverage cartons while maintaining an ongoing dialogue with all relevant stakeholders.

“It was truly a great pleasure for us to have received this award at the European Parliament,” Tommaso De Luca, Lucart's Communications Manager, commented. “The Fiberpack® project best represents the two core values of our company: sustainability and innovation. In the last few years, we have worked extremely hard and we will continue to do so in view of the increasingly stringent European environmental requirements, in order to offer solutions and projects that are respectful of the environment and of people's well-being,” De Luca concluded. “Our circular business model involves citizens as product users, but also as promoters of good practices through separate waste collection. Hopefully, this award will be a good omen for the important decisions that must be taken at European level to facilitate the transition to a Circular Economy.”

Any future projects? Lucart will continue to promote a transparent, practical and viable circular economy model in Europe. Thanks to the Fiberpack® project, Lucart can now offer consumers a recycled paper product, which is carried on a recycled pallet and used through a recycled plastic dispenser, obtained by recycling the various components of beverage cartons. This product development model is in line with circular economy principles, starting with waste management through proper disposal. Waste is then sent for treatment to be re-processed into secondary raw materials, ready to be reused and placed on the market.

Lucart's commitment, which resulted in this prestigious award, is quantifiable and measurable in terms of environmental performance.

From 2013 to 2016, Lucart has contributed to achieving great results:

  • more than 2.8 billion 1-litre beverage cartons have been recycled, which, if lined up one after the other, would cover a distance equal to the circumvention of the Earth 16 times over
  • more than 1.2 million trees have been saved thanks to this initiative, equal to a surface area of more than 4,200 football fields
  • more than 73,000 tonnes of CO2 have been avoided, equal to the emissions produced by more than 578,000 Rome-Milan trips by car

At the Pulire exhibition, Lucart presents an example of circular economy unprecedented in Italy

The sustainability and innovation of this product have allowed Lucart to win the coveted EU Ecolabel award

Can a recycled paper product be supplied inside a dispenser made with reclaimed materials? Now it can: this is the successful case history presented by Lucart at Pulire, the largest professional cleaning industry trade show in Italy, a world-leading event in the sector held in Verona from 23rd to 25th May.

Thanks to the Fiberpack® project, the innovative and sustainable project developed in collaboration with Tetra Pak®, Lucart can now recycle 100% of the components of a beverage carton, allocating 74% of cellulose fibres to the production of recycled paper products and the remaining 26%, consisting of 22% polyethylene and 4% aluminium, to the production of AL.PE.®, a recovered material intended for industries that produce building materials, urban furniture elements and objects of everyday use. Lucart used this material to create a full range of washroom area dispensers, combining the concept of sustainability with the three key elements that are most in-demand on the market: manageability, design and reliability.

2017 05 26 095242

This way, Lucart achieved a major goal: offering a superior quality recycled paper product contained in a dispenser made from recycled materials, thus providing an actual example of circular economy also for beverage cartons.

“Circular economics: The Future of Production, Consumption and the Entire Life Cycle. A Challenge for Businesses and the Community": this is the title of the conference promoted by Afidamp (the Italian Association of Professional Cleaning Equipment Manufacturers), which saw the participation of Lucart with a speech by Francesco Pasquini, Sales and Marketing Director of Lucart's Away From Home Business Unit.

"Our aim was to provide a practical example of sustainable innovation through solutions that stand out for being both original and effective. Two innovative raw materials have been combined to create two product ranges, which, as a single system, are capable of bringing the sustainability of the Lucart Professional brand in the daily business of customers in the Away From Home market," said Francesco Pasquini, Sales and Marketing Director of Lucart’s Away From Home Business Unit.

This project focused on sustainability and innovation is the reason why Lucart was chosen by Ecolabel – which, today, celebrates its 25 years of activity at a European level – as the winner of the Ecolabel Award on the occasion of the second edition of the EU Ecolabel National Awards.
EU Ecolabel is the ecological quality brand of the European Union (EU Ecolabel) for products and services, which, in addition to guaranteeing high performance standards, are characterised by a low environmental impact throughout the entire life cycle.

Lucart Professional received this prestigious award for category B, which is dedicated to the most innovative products and/or services from an environmental point of view, in terms of design, use or initiatives taken.

"We are very proud to receive this prestigious award, which is also a reward for our determination in pursuing the circular business model. It is no surprise that in 1998 we were the first Italian company to obtain the Ecolabel certification and, therefore, to believe that product sustainability should be achieved by taking into account the entire life cycle of a product," stated Guido Pasquini, Lucart’s Commercial Director - "We sincerely hope that the Ecolabel certification will increasingly become a benchmark for this type of economy.”

Komunala Novo mesto d.o.o. was the first municipal services company in Slovenia to take part in a pilot project to close the materials cycle for waste milk, juice and other beverage cartons (used beverage cartons or UBCs). Through a series of specially designed activities, they were encouraging schools and households to collect UBCs separately and to pass as many of them on for recycling as possible. This was part of Novo Mesto’s efforts to gradually establish its own closed materials loop for waste BCs, thereby securing enough raw materials to produce its own supply of sanitary paper over the long term.

Komunala Novo mesto provides municipal services for eight municipalities covering a total population of 65,000. This population disposes enough waste milk and juice UBCs per year in yellow containers or bags to provide just enough resource of cellulose for the production of annual quantity of sanitary paper used by local public institutions – municipal government offices, schools, nursery schools, health centers, libraries and the like. Around 45 hectares of woodland would have to be felled to make this quantity of sanitary paper; but if all UBCs in the area covered by Komunala Novo mesto were recycled into sanitary paper, this would meet the entirety of local needs and, moreover, save around 1,100 trees and provide total independency from primary resources. In a desire to lead the way in establishing this method of conserving the environment, Komunala Novo mesto has decided to take part in the pilot project.

The key partners in these efforts to close the materials cycle for UBCs in Novo mesto: Komunala Novo mesto, Slovenia; Dinos DROE Unirec waste packaging management company, Slovenia; LUCART, Italy; and EKO INICIATIVA - community of businesses and institutions that practice sustainable professional facility hygiene - set up and coordinated by VALTEX & Co., Slovenia.

2017 03 30 090859

How does the process of closing the materials cycle for UBCs in Novo Mesto actually work?

Once the end users have emptied, cleaned and folded the waste packaging, and placed it in the designated yellow container, Komunala Novo mesto takes it to the collection center. There it is received by Dinos DROE Unirec, a waste packaging management company, and sent for further processing to the specialist Lucart company. Lucart then separates the cellulose and uses it as a secondary raw material for the production of sanitary paper. Residents of Novo Mesto and the surrounding municipalities are then able to reuse these products in schools, shopping centers and other institutions that are part of the EKO INICIATIVA community. This closes the materials cycle.

Niko Kumar, founder of EKO INICIATIVA says: ‘The municipal materials cycle established in eight Novo Mesto municipalities is the first in which residents, by carefully separating their waste, become actively responsible for the raw materials that go into making sanitary paper via a regular industrial process, for use in the municipal infrastructure of their home towns and villages and through existing and future members of EKO INICIATIVA. This is a practical example of a sustainable business and a sustainable way of life.

Selected schools and the general public involved in the project

Komunala Novo mesto began by choosing four primary schools to take part in the project. As part of a class competition, pupils received special bags to use at home to collect and separate waste UBCs. At collection days, four per year, the packaging collected was brought to school, where Komunala staff examined it and awarded stickers. The class that collected the most stickers by the end of the year was the class that most diligently, consistently, and correctly separated its waste packaging. It was declared the winner and received a prize.

The general public has also had the chance to take part, taking bags containing UBCs to the Komunala Novo mesto collection center and receiving a small gift from the EKO INICIATIVA community in return: paper tissues made from recycled cellulose.

Both activities were used to communicate the project with general public.

Sanitary paper from processed cellulose fibre from used beverage cartons

The Fiberpack® logo (www.fiberpack.com) identifies the fibrous raw material obtained through Lucart exclusive treatment process of beverage cartons, which is used to produce Lucart Professional EcoNatural and Grazie Natural branded products.

The production process uses an innovative technology, which, by physical-mechanical action, separates the cellulose fibres found in beverage cartons from polyethylene and aluminium without using substances that are harmful to man or the environment.

The fibres are therefore used to obtain tissue products, whereas aluminium and polyethylene are recovered in other industries to produce items for a number of end uses.

Fiberpack® products feature a light Havana brown colour because the cellulose fibres are not bleached. The products feature excellent resistance, absorbency and softness and are 100% ecological, EU Ecolabel and FSC® Recycled certified.

Novo mesto project is a great example of the broader sustainability Company strategy which lead Lucart Group, considering tonnes of Fiberpack® products manufactured, to recover in 2013-2016 more than 2.8 billion beverage cartons, to save more than 1,200,000 trees and to avoid almost 73,500 tonnes of CO2.

Closing the materials cycle helps conserve natural resources and optimize waste management processes

Closing materials cycles, or what is known as the ‘circular economy’, is one of the mainstays of European Union policy currently and will be in the coming years, for this reason: our consumption is already at the level of twice the natural resources available. Establishing a circular economy means addressing the entire lifecycle of a product and its component materials, then defining the proportion of these materials that can be reused – and the form of reuse. This means that a new raw material is produced from waste and can go towards manufacturing a new product.

The foundations have now been laid with this project in Novo mesto which aims to close the materials cycle for UBCs. It all started mid 2016 when the first quantities of UBCs were designated for being recycled into sanitary paper. By early 2017 in the city of Novo mesto 35% of the demand for sanitary paper products are now covering citizens by themselves, with their own contribution of UBCs. This way they are actively participating in the day-to-day circular economy. We are hoping and expecting the Municipal Material Cycle of Novo mesto to achieve its full effect by 2018, covering as much as 80% of local demand for sanitary paper products.

Implementing the Municipal Material Flow Cycles globally

The Association of partners EKO INCIATIVA aims to roll this model of operation out in Slovenia as well as abroad. The potential of this project has already received a special global recognition, as a good example to practices of circular economy. Between number of applications of firms, institutions, cities, municipalities, and regions from all over the world, the project »Material flow cycle of BC – Novo mesto« was HIGHLY COMMENDED at THE CIRCULARS 2017 – in the category »Government, Cities & Regions« as an example of good practice in circular economy. The material flow cycle, which has been established in Novo mesto and eight surrounding Slovenian municipalities in 2015/2016, is the first such example of circular practice in the world. In the global competition for the prize have, so far, participated more than 36 countries. The expert committee, composed of 27 international experts recognized the potential of the project. The competition is organized each year by The World Economic Forum and The Forum of Young Global Leaders forum, to promote the best companies and implemented projects in the field of circular economy, this year it was held in January at the World Economic Summit, in Davos.

Lucart is the first company in the Italian paper industry to have obtained the maximum Legality Rating score, winning 3 stars out of 3.

On 25 January 2017, the Italian Competition Authority (AGCM), in agreement with the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Justice, renewed Lucart SpA's Legality Rating.

2017 03 01 091053

The Legality Rating is a new instrument, introduced in 2012 (Law no. 62/2012) for Italian companies, aimed at promoting and introducing principles of ethical conduct within business. This is done by awarding an "acknowledgement" - measured in "stars" - to indicate how much the company applying for the rating complies with the law and, more generally, the degree of attention it places on the proper management of its business.

In 2014, Lucart was already one of the first companies in Italy to have made an application to be awarded the Rating and, on the basis of the legal requisites as well as those based on conduct, traceability, business models and ethics etc., had obtained a 2-star ++ rating.

"We are very pleased and proud to have achieved this ambitious goal, which is reserved for only a small number of Italian companies. It's an acknowledgement that rewards consistency and compliance with all the regulations that protect Consumers and the Market", said Massimo Pasquini, Lucart Group's CEO.

The Legality Rating is valid for two years from its issue and is renewable upon request.

LUCART wins the "NO WASTE" AWARD

The New Award for the Fiberpack® Project

The project solves the waste disposal problem of beverage cartons and it has been awarded to the LUISS University in Rome

lucart logoThe Fiberpack® Lucart Group project has won the “No Waste” Award in the "Business" section, created and produced by journalist and writer Antonio Galdo, The Director of the “nonsprecare.it “ website.

Currently in its seventh edition, the prize promotes projects and good economic and social practices which challenge the contemporary paradigm of “waste” and for this reason the organizers decided to award the Fiberpack® project, whose main objective is to produce paper and other objects without cutting down trees, however only through the recycling of containers of used beverage cartons Tetra Pak®.
.
In line with the spirit of the event, the winners were awarded with a quantity of biological products, offered by the Alce Nero Group, equal to their body weight at the LUISS University of Rome.

Lucart produces tissue paper products for sanitary use with the cellulose containers, while the aluminum and polyethylene (plastic material) is used by third parties to produce other objects, such as pallets, other manufactured articles for building and mooring poles used in the Venetian lagoon.

In the last three years from 2013 to 2015, the Fiberpack® paper produced by The Lucart Group has recovered almost 2 billion * beverage cartons, saving approximately 900,000 trees **, which would have been necessary for the production of the equivalent amount of virgin fiber paper; avoided over 52,000 tonnes of CO2e of emissions *** thanks to the non occurance of beverage carton waste, a quantity of CO2 equivalent to the emissions of 400,000 trips from Rome to Milan by car.

"We are very pleased with this new Award” - says Guido Pasquini, The Group's Commercial Director – “this is further confirmation that we are heading in the right direction by adopting development models which minimize waste and demonstrate the principles of circular economy, applicable in all sectors”.
"The revolution in the name of No Waste is now underway in the country “- says Antonio Galdo - and results in new lifestyles, new consumption and new economic growth, also through the incentive of projects and products combining research, innovation, reduction of waste and total respect for the environment. This is where our future lies, this is where there is space to get back to being competitive and above all it creates jobs for many young people who can't find work "

A reduction of over 5,000 tons of CO2e into the atmosphere and the reduction of 9.1% in water consumption

The use of renewable energy and rail transport confirm the Group's commitment towards an eco-sustainable production

Over 5,000 tons of CO2e atmospheric reduction as well as the reduction of water consumption equal to 9.1% and raw materials made from 54% recycled paper.

These are the results of the sustainable production of The Lucart Group, published in the eleventh edition of the 2015 Sustainability Report that will be presented to the public during the Ecomondo fair in Rimini.

2016 11 04 161251

"In our Company “Lucart”, being sustainable means creating long lasting value not only for the Company and its Shareholders however also for our Employees and their families, for the Communities in which we operate and for our Partners, whether Suppliers or Clients. This has been made possible thanks to the transition from a linear economy to a circular economy, emphasizing the use of recovered fibers, with the capacity to protect the environment and safeguard the development of local communities, without foresaking the quality of our products" to quote Massimo Pasquini, the CEO of the Lucart Group.

Outlined as follows, is the performance of the Lucart Group, photographed by the Sustainability Report 2015, which can be viewed on our website www.lucartgroup.com:

- Recycled materials: in 2015 the pulp selected, whether from the industrial supply chains or from household collections, have reached 54% of total raw materials processed at our Lucart Group plants.

- Rail transport: from 2013 Lucart has doubled (from 572 to 1154) the number of carriages with a specific mobility program for both incoming and outgoing goods from the Diecimo plant (Lucca), with a significant reduction in traffic and typical pollutant emissions of road transport of 483 tCO2e less, released into the atmosphere.

-Reducing water consumption: thanks to the increase in the quantity of water recycled in the production process and the reduction of the requirements for the production process itself, in 2015 Lucart has reduced the consumption of water by 9.1% (vs. 2014) per tonne of paper produced, as well as the consumption of steam, another widely used resource for drying paper, which has been decreased compared to 2014.

- In 2015 the use of alternative renewable energy sources has prevented the emission of more than 1,500 tCO2e in total into the atmosphere. Specifically the two Photovolcaic plants installed: one in the Capannori area (2011) and the other in the  Avigliano plant (active since 2013), have reduced emissions of 935 tCO2e.

Among the specific measures taken in 2015 in the Diecimo plant (Lucca), we would like to highlight that the installation of LED lamps and of an inverter of a pulper machine, has resulted in a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 98 tCO2e.

- The cogeneration plants fueled by methane gas in the Porcari and Castelnuovo in Garfagnana plants, which fully cover the energy needs and generate a surplus which is pumped into the network, together with other interventions for reducing the use of natural gas and steam, have reduced 3,600 tCO2e in the atmosphere, compared to 2014. This result was made possible thanks to the completion of the first Cogeneration plant with Integrated EcoRecupero. The fumes recovery project of the gas turbine for the direct drying of the paper in 2015, has enabled a reduction in the necessity of methane gas amounting to over 2 million m3.

All these measures, together with various other actions, have made it possible to reduce more than 5,000 tCO2e of emissions.

Almost 2 billion beverage cartons recovered and approx. 900,000 trees saved, are the calculations of what would have been necessary to produce the equivalent amount of virgin fiber paper, over 52,000 tons of CO2e prevented, thanks to the nonoccurance of landfill disposal of beverage cartons. These are the environmental benefits achieved in three years from 2013-2015 of the Fiberpack® project, the flagship of The Lucart Group, which testifies the total applicability of the principles of circular economy to the tissue sector.

Fiberpack®, the innovative treatment process, developed in 2011 by the Lucart Group, thanks to the collaboration with Tetra Pak®, which separates the cellulose fibers from the rest of the materials with precision, using clean technology and zero waste, enables the recovery of 100% of the components of beverage cartons.
