The growing importance of a bioeconomy strategy based on renewable raw materials is clearly reflected in the program of the ZELLCHEMING Conference - Cellulose-Based Materials. The great potential of cellulose, the main component of plant cell walls and thus the world's most abundant organic compound, will be addressed in 24 scientific and technical presentations by internationally renowned speakers. The event, which will take place from June 26 to 29, 2022, at the RheinMain CongressCenter (RMCC) in Wiesbaden, Germany, will for the first time bridge the gap between innovative research on cellulose-based as well as -derived polymers and scientific work in the field of probably the best-known material built from cellulose: paper.

As a joint initiative of professors from the Technical University of Darmstadt and the University of Jena, as well as the ZELLCHEMING association with its technical committees, the event brings together industry and research institutes in the fields of chemistry, physics and engineering and facilitates an active exchange. Young researchers are also actively involved and present their own work as a poster show.

"We are very pleased that we have been able to attract internationally renowned representatives from science and industry to speak at our event," says Prof. Dr. Markus Biesalski, Professor of Macromolecular Chemistry and Paper Chemistry at TU Darmstadt. "The lecture program is an expression of the increasing dovetailing of the wood- and recycled fiber-based paper industry with companies and scientists in the field of cellulose chemistry who are dedicated to the use of cellulose polymers in sustainable products. With our conference, we would like to provide a framework for this content in the future!" explains Prof. Dr.-Ing. Samuel Schabel, Head of the Department of Paper Manufacturing and Mechanical Process Engineering at TU Darmstadt. "The great global response - in addition to speakers from Europe, we have also hosted colleagues from the USA, Canada and Australia, among other countries - shows that we have hit a nerve," adds Prof. Dr. Thomas Heinze, Director of the Center of Excellence for Polysaccharides at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena.

The program of the three-day conference is divided into different sessions, each led by Professors Heinze, Biesalski and Schabel:  Cellulose Chemistry and Physics; Paper Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Lignocellulose; Paper and Pulp Engineering; and Paper Engineering, Physics & Characterization. Highlights include insights into pharmaceutical and bio-medical applications, cellulose processing capabilities, film production, paper-based diagnostic tools, or sustainable energy generation.

"This international conference offers new impulses and promotes interdisciplinary approaches. There are also many opportunities for personal discussions and the expansion of the network, for example at the Get-Together and the Conference Dinner. In addition, we are pleased that the third day of the conference coincides with the first day of the ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2022, so that participants can also visit this high-profile event," summarizes Petra Hanke, Managing Director of ZELLCHEMING Service GmbH.

Focus on the potential of cellulose-based materials

2021 11 30 144125

The new ZELLCHEMING Conference "Cellulose Based Materials - From Science to Technology" reflects the growing importance of a bioeconomy strategy based on renewable raw materials. Cellulose, the main component of plant cell walls and thus the most abundant organic compound worldwide, will play a key role in the future. Therefore, the potential of cellulose-based materials and materials will be the focus of the event from June 26-29, 2022, at the RheinMain CongressCenter (RMCC) in Wiesbaden.

"With this conference, we intend to bridge the gap for the first time between innovative research on cellulose-based as well as cellulose-derived polymers and scientific work in the field of probably the best-known material built from cellulose: paper," explains Prof. Dr. Markus Biesalski, Professor of Macromolecular Chemistry and Paper Chemistry at TU Darmstadt and co-initiator of the event.

The conference is aimed at both interested scientists and colleagues from industry. It is a joint initiative of professors of the Technical University of Darmstadt and the University of Jena as well as the association ZELLCHEMING with its technical committees, based on two pillars: On the one hand, on the long-standing and close connection to the wood- and recycled fiber-based paper industry and, on the other hand, on the intensive contacts to companies and scientists in the field of cellulose chemistry and the use of cellulose polymers in sustainable products, which the association ZELLCHEMING has maintained for many years.

"The paper industry is intensively engaged in innovative applications for the fiber as well as for side streams of the production process, thus driving the further expansion of the bioeconomy strategy," explains Prof. Dr.-Ing. Samuel Schabel, Chair of Paper Technology and Mechanical Process Engineering (PMV) at TU Darmstadt. "An important focus is on innovative processes for the production as well as recycling of paper, in addition to producing innovative and conventional paper products as CO2-neutrally as possible."

Prof. Dr. Thomas Heinze, director of the Center of Excellence for Polysaccharides at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, adds, "The active connection of both strands and thus the possibility to discover and leverage new, future potentials in the field of sustainable cellulose-based or -derived materials and materials is an important factor that led us to set up this international conference."

The event will bring together industry and research institutes in the fields of chemistry, physics, and engineering for an active exchange. The program includes lectures by internationally renowned representatives of science and industry. Young scientists will be actively involved and present their own work as a poster show.

"The international conference offers new opportunities for a close linkage and interaction between academia and industry with reference to the diverse applications for cellulose and cellulose-based materials. In addition, we are looking forward to a close connection with the ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2022, which will take place in parallel," summarizes Petra Hanke, Managing Director of ZELLCHEMING Service GmbH.

For the ZELLCHEMING Virtual Days, the international paper and pulp community gathered on a digital platform for a total of three days, from June 8 to 10: More than 635 participants and 65 sponsors and partner companies took advantage of the virtual stage, where intensive exchange of information and casual networking could be easily combined.

A good 55 % of the registered visitors are employees of paper, board and pulp manufacturers or work in science, trade, converting and associations. 18 % of the participants had logged in from abroad. The various sessions were well attended, with more than 200 people following the panel discussion at the start of the event, for example. In total, registered visitors spent more than 42,000 minutes on the platform over two days.

"With this event, we have recognized the signs of the times and boldly broken new ground. I am pleased that we have been able to achieve complete success with it," explains Gerrit Lund, the outgoing chairman of the ZELLCHEMING association. "We are proud to have lived up to our claim of being the platform for professional technical exchange for all those involved in the development of sustainable paper and cellulose-based products. Our team, as well as all participants, sponsors and partner companies who actively supported us, had to complete an enormous learning curve within a very short time - but: it was worth it!"

Petra Hanke, Managing Director of ZELLCHEMING Service GmbH, explains: "The ZELLCHEMING Virtual Days were organized with a high-quality standard and the support of experienced service providers, we have set a new standard for ourselves. The decision to set up a live studio for speakers and presenters at the Rhein-Main Congress Center in Wiesbaden has also proved very successful. We were even able to offer a small foretaste of the ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2022!"

With the foundation of ZELLCHEMING Service GmbH, the reorientation of the ZELLCHEMING Association with a clear separation between voluntary association life and economic activities is now officially completed.

Behind the scenes, work has already been going on for several weeks to prepare the starting signal for the ZELLCHEMING-Expo in June 2021, which is organized and handled by the GmbH as organizer, in the best possible way. Information material and documents are available and the starting signal for the exhibitor acquisition has already been given. The Expo website has also gone live for visitors and exhibitors from Germany and abroad.

Positive Response

2020 10 23 094053"The initial response has been very positive: A number of exhibitors have already confirmed their participation and the reserved area is already higher than that which was booked for the Expo planned for 2020 in the same period," explains Petra Hanke, Managing Director of ZELLCHEMING Service GmbH.

"We are experiencing that many representatives of our industry feel the desire to meet again with suppliers and industry colleagues in personal discussions and are confident that we will be able to meet this need, also in view of our sophisticated hygiene concept".

The multifunctional RheinMain CongressCenter in Wiesbaden offers plenty of space for a wide variety of events and functions such as trade fairs, congresses, and conferences as well as digital formats and is advertised as a "feel-good location". Petra Hanke: "The fact that we are returning to a proven and popular location, which at the same time presents itself in a completely new and contemporary way, also generates a great deal of positive interest".

Over two full days, on June 9 and 10, 2021, visitors to the ZELLCHEMING-Expo will be able to follow practice-oriented presentations and obtain information and further training on specific topics and applications. The lectures, which will be presented in the course of the event, pick up current approaches of the paper- and cellulose-based industry on the way to a climate-friendly bio-economy and give further impetus to ideas and initiatives beyond the event. Exhibitors are involved via best-practice applications and the latest technologies for process and product innovation. The detailed program will be presented in the coming weeks.

Stronger integration of scientific and technical work

A further aspect of the spin-off of the economic business activities into the GmbH was the desire to re-focus the association on scientific and technical work and thus sharpen its profile as an important link between research and industry.

In this context, the link with the ZELLCHEMING-Expo is also to be strengthened - in which the results of the ZELLCHEMING working groups will be presented to a broad expert audience for the first time in the context of a forum at the Expo. Which steps could be taken for this purpose in the technical committees and district groups has already been discussed in a future workshop", explained Gerrit Lund, 1st Chairman of the ZELLCHEMING Association.

The course for the future has been set!

The economic business operations of the ZELLCHEMING association will be outsourced to a GmbH in the coming months, while the non-profit part will remain. This is the result of a survey by postal vote with the option of online voting: A clear majority (64.34%) of ZELLCHEMING members took part, of which 93.44% were in favor as of July 31, 2020, to clearly separate voluntary association life and economic activities in the future.

Gerrit Lund, 1st chairman of the ZELLCHEMING association, said: “I am very pleased with the very good response and the clear result. It shows that our members support us on our way. "

The tax-separate administration of the non-profit and economic part of the association's activities has so far meant a high expenditure of time for financial processing and documentation. This gave rise to the desire to outsource commercial operations to a GmbH.

2020 08 12 101727

The overarching goal is to ensure that the ZELLCHEMING association, which has existed for over 115 years, is stable and secure for the coming decades. As a result of the separation, the economic dominance is outsourced from the organizational structure and the "voluntary association life" is strengthened. This enables the association to concentrate more on scientific and technical work, thereby sharpening its profile as an important link between research and industry and performing this role more intensively.

However, the ZELLCHEMING association is 100% shareholder of the GmbH and thus retains control over the outsourced subsidiary to the extent desired. The GmbH, in turn, takes on services for the ZELLCHEMING association and bills them for them.

Petra Hanke, managing director of the ZELLCHEMING association, explains: “The unambiguous and clear allocation will allow us to work out the objectives for both the association and the GmbH more precisely and to react more agile to developments and requirements. As a result, there will be new ways to monitor success. And: We would like the important specialist work that is done at ZELLCHEMING to be more effectively communicated to the outside world. For many years, the image of the Expo has obscured the association's perception. The separation between the GmbH and the association will make it come to the fore again. That means setting the course for the future! "

The ZELLCHEMING Association is pleased to announce the return to a proven and popular location, the RheinMain CongressCenter (RMCC) Wiesbaden, at the same time as the date for the Expo and the Annual General Meeting that will take 9 to 10 June 2021. The event planned for June 2020 in the Frankfurt exhibition halls had been cancelled because of the corona pandemic.

The ZELLCHEMING association is thus continuing its successful events in the past: From 2003 to 2013, the Expo and General Meeting in the Rhein-Main-Hallen had already been organized by the association itself. In 2014, the association moved to Frankfurt am Main, as the long-standing location was torn down and rebuilt. In this context, a close cooperation with the organizer Mesago Messe Frankfurt started.

zs expo stoerer en 500

From the beginning of July, ZELLCHEMING will again take over the management of the event. This includes the areas of organization, visitor support as well as communication and marketing. At the same time, the good cooperation with Mesago will continue: The trade fair company will remain responsible for exhibitor acquisition and services.

Petra Hanke, Managing Director of the ZELLCHEMING Association, explains: "From our point of view, we have come full circle here: Although the RMCC was rebuilt exactly at the old location, it is a highly modern and absolutely up-to-date congress Center. The ZELLCHEMING Association has also set itself the goal of working on current technical challenges facing the paper and pulp industry, while at the same time cultivating our roots and the tradition resulting from our more than 115-year history!

„We are using the break caused by the Corona pandemic this year for the reorientation of our concept, and against this background it makes sense that we will again have a direct influence on the content of the trade fair. But we also see it as a very positive signal that we can continue our partnership with Mesago“, she goes on.

"We look forward to being part of the ZELLCHEMING family in the future and to accompanying the traditionally rich paper industry with new and innovative topics to their new exhibition location. With our long-established network and our many years of expertise as a trade fair organizer, it is an honor for us to continue supporting the Expo." said Sabrina Zapf, Deputy Vice President of Mesago GmbH, responsible for the ZELLCHEMING-Expo.

Zellcheming 2016 Banner 550x200 E Besucher

The countdown is running: At ZELLCHEMING-Expo, from 4 – 6 July 2017 visitors get an exclusive and up-to-date insight into future challenges and new approaches along the process chain of the pulp and paper production. Especially at the exhibition forum participants will not only be informed but also inspired by the main topic “Industry 4.0” for new development opportunities in their companies. With the keynote speech under the heading  “Good sides, bad sides – Why the paper industry also has to reinvent itself,” web journalist and TV presenter Richard Gutjahr sensitized for the future topic on the first exhibition day:

“Not even one in two represents of the paper industry believes that the digitalization, the “Internet of Things” and the “Industry 4.0” will have a profound effect on the own business. But the lessons of history tell us that especially those who feel the safest will be hardest hit by the change. The lecture will show why the step from the analog to the hyper interlinked digital age will be bigger than the invention of the book printing and why no industry will remain untouched by this change.”

Practical knowledge-transfer

Other sources of information provide the workshop “Industry 4.0“ of the ZELLCHEMING technical committee pulp and paper testing (TEST), the workshop “Technologies from TODAY for the products of TOMORROW” of the Papiertechnischen Stiftung as well as the lecture series “The VDI and its effects on the paper industry” of the ZELLCHEMING technical committee microbiology. This year, the already established Cellulose Symposium will present again the latest discoveries in the field of polysaccharide research.

Learn from the best: Presentation of revolutionary and long-lasting ideas

The exhibitor lecture series “Best Practice – Learn from the best“ under professional supervision of the association ZELLCHEMING e.V. as well as the lecture series of the publisher Deutscher Fachverlag with presentations from exhibitors of the market place, will also offer particular insights into practice.

Amongst others, participants experience from the company Creapaper GmbH how sustainable, revolutionary and easily grass can be used in paper production and which potential reveals thereof. Also the topic “Cloud-based analysis of the control accuracy” provides practical information. The company Siemens AG reports concerning this matter about saving potentials in the pulp and paper production.

Exhibition: Keyplayer and newcomers show know-how

At the exhibition of ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2017, visitors also feel the pulse of the market. Here, 150 companies present their latest products and services. Well-known keyplayers like ABB Automation, Andritz, Siemens, Pöyry, Valmet and Voith Paper, also a lot of small medium-sized companies are represented. Furthermore, various first-time exhibitors present themselves to a high-class audience at the “Newcomer Pavilion“ and show there know-how.

Better connected through participation at the frame program

The already established evening events enable visitors to expand their network focused in the industry beyond the exhibition and to continue conversations in a relaxed atmosphere. On the first day of the event, the “After Fair” takes place in the foyer of hall 4.1. For the second time, the “Summer Evening” of the association ZELLCHEMING e.V. invites to “Depot 1899”, a traditional restaurant in the former tram railway station in Frankfurt a. M.

For the first time in 2017, the ZELLCHEMING-Cup takes place. It is a table football tournament which takes place during the exhibition. This makes it child's play for the visitors to become familiar with the exhibitors and to win attractive prices.

The entire lecture program and further information can be found at www.zellcheming-expo.com/forum

ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2017: Proven location, new hall

2016 12 16 065606

The exhibition ground in Frankfurt am Main remains venue of ZELLCHEMING-Expo until 2020. In close cooperation with the association ZELLCHEMING e.V. as patron of the event, the organizer Mesago Messe Frankfurt GmbH has decided to keep the previous location. Over a certain number of months, four different cities were under discussion. They had been analyzed and evaluated based on well defined criteria. In comparison, Frankfurt am Main achieved the best results. Petra Hanke, Managing Director of the association ZELLCHEMING e.V., explains the decision as follows:

“In fact, the process was not easily done. The new location should be open for growth and is expected to offer development potential for new concepts and new collaborations. After having taken all criteria into consideration, Frankfurt provided the all-inclusive package in the end. For us it was very important that our members and visitors of the annual general meeting have a pleasant setting with an attractive environment and a good accessibility in future as well.”

Simone Pfisterer, Vice President at Mesago Messe Frankfurt GmbH, adds the location advantage: “The Main metropolis additionally offers the best infrastructural requirements. With its favorable geographical situation in the heart of Europe, Frankfurt is perfectly accessible by public transport for both exhibitors and visitors.”

New: Event located in hall 4.1.

In future ZELLCHEMING-Expo will be domiciled in hall 4.1 of the Frankfurt fairground. The change in halls will be implemented for the event in 2017. The exhibition will take place from 4 – 6 July 2017.

Hall 4.1 provides some infrastructural advantages: Directly placed in the middle of the exhibition ground, with a light-flooded foyer, the hall is best connected to the public transport system. Furthermore, hall 4.1 has own parking levels which are related directly with the area. There are various food and beverage offerings in close proximity and one café on the exhibition hall, as well. This improvement should allow very short and so efficient distances.

Cooperative partnership remains

The Mesago Messe Frankfurt GmbH and the association ZELLCHEMING e.V. are looking forward to many future years of cooperative partnership.

“Together with Mesago it has been possible to professionalize and to develop ZELLCHEMING-Expo. We have set commonly established goals and are looking forward to meeting these together,” summarizes Petra Hanke.

Further information to the event are available at zellcheming-expo.com.
