Nalco, an Ecolab company, has announced construction of a dry polymer production facility at the company's complex in Garyville, La. The 300,000 square-foot facility will produce dry polymer products for use in removing contaminants from wastewater, increasing production efficiency in the paper industry and recovering minerals in the mining industry.

When completed late this year, the dry polymer plant will increase facility space at the Garyville complex to one million square feet and add 22 full-time positions to the company's current Garyville workforce of 235 employees.

"For more than 40 years, the Garyville community has had a significant role in the growth of Nalco, and we are extremely proud of the products and results our local employees have produced," said Jim Seifert, executive vice president, Ecolab. "The new dry polymer facility further strengthens our relationship with the community and the State of Louisiana, and we look forward to opening this facility and providing our customers with another innovative product solution."

Louisiana GovernorBobby Jindal andSt. John the Baptist Parish PresidentNatalie Robottom attended an event to announce the construction project.

"Ecolab decided to reinvest in Louisiana because of the track record of production success the company has had in St. John the Baptist Parish, and most importantly, because Louisiana has some of the best workers in the world," said Governor Jindal. "The company's expansion is a testament to Louisiana's strong business climate and the reliable and hardworking men and women of Louisiana."

Nalco first opened a production facility in Garyville in 1970. Today, the Garyville complex comprises more than 220-acres and produces industrial water treatment products, such as corrosion and scale inhibitors, used in boilers and cooling towers; wastewater treatment products; and process chemicals used in the papermaking, mining, petroleum, steel, power generation, food and beverage, metalworking and aluminum refining industries.

"Nalco has been a successful company and great community partner in St. John the Baptist Parish for many years," said Parish President Robottom. "The merger with Ecolab, another successful company, reassures their continued support for our community."

In addition to the 22 full-time positions necessary to operate the new dry polymer facility, it will take approximately 350,000 man-hours to complete the project, the equivalent of 167 full-time construction jobs. Construction of the facility is expected to be completed in December 2012.

Nalco, an Ecolab company has implemented a price increase for all water and process services industry segments. Pricing for most Nalco Water and Process Services division programs will increase globally between five and 15 percent, varying by country and product. The price increase is effective immediately or as existing contracts allow.

The price adjustments are driven by the significant increase in key raw materials costs, combined with other global inflationary factors such as rising energyand transportation costs. Nalco sales engineers are contacting customers directly to discuss the impact of these increases.

"We continue to take actions to minimize the impact of increasing raw material costs, but it is necessary to appropriately increase prices to help offset these ongoing cost hikes," said David Flitman, executive vice president and president, Water and Process Services.

Nalco, an Ecolab company, has helped NV Energy dramatically reduce its water use and fuel consumption while supplying reliable power to its more than two million customers in Nevada.

NV Energy's coal-fired Reid Gardner Station north of Las Vegas, Nev., uses both river and well water in its cooling system, but the source water contains high concentrations of silica, which can cause harmful buildup in the cooling system. Nalco's 3D TRASAR® Technology for Cooling Water employs fluorescence-based monitoring to prevent silica buildup through a combination of innovative chemistry and sophisticated system control.

The optimized cooling system requires less fresh water to operate, allowing NV Energy to reduce its water withdrawals, saving more than 281 million gallons of water annually. Based on water-use information from the Southern Nevada Water Authority, that's enough water to meet the annual daily use needs of more than 3,400 people1. The reduction in freshwater use also reduces the facility's wastewater by the same amount, helping it meet its ZLD (zero liquid discharge) requirements.

NV Energy also wanted to reduce environmental impact and improve operations at its coal-fired North Valmy Station, near Valmy, Nev. The station's steam turbines, which drive the generators, were experiencing deposits that reduced overall efficiency.

NV Energy selected patented 3D TRASAR Boiler Technology, which combines advanced sensors, software and control capability to deliver a unique solution that allows real-time monitoring and control of the steam system under extremely high temperature and pressure conditions.

Nalco 3D TRASAR Boiler Technology provides the capability to apply proper treatments at the precise time and in the exact amount to prevent copper corrosion and deposits that can damage equipment, require expensive cleaning and reduce the efficiency of the generating process. These improvements allow the North Valmy Station to generate the same amount of electricity while reducing fuel consumption by 87,000 tons of coal annually. The fuel savings reduced costs by $3.5 million per year, helping hold down electricity rates and providing additional eROI value to NV Energy.

"NV Energy is committed to providing cost-effective electricity to our customers while meeting or exceeding environmental standards," said Kevin Geraghty, vice president of Power Generation for NV Energy. "Improving the operation of our cooling and steam systems with Nalco's help allows NV Energy to continue to preserve Nevada's precious water supply and reduce fuel use while still meeting the electricity needs of our customers."

Nalco, an Ecolab company (NYSE:ECL), has helped Freescale Semiconductor's Oak Hill fabrication plant in Austin, Texas, respond to severe drought conditions by enabling a substantial reduction in the use of municipal fresh water and increasing water reuse and recycling.

Headquartered in Austin, Freescale Semiconductor is a global leader in the design and manufacture of embedded semiconductors for the automotive, consumer, industrial and networking markets. Freescale's home state of Texas is facing punishing drought conditions, recently recording the state's driest 12-month period on record. The U.S. Department of Agriculture drought monitor shows 80 percent of the state in either extreme or exceptional drought.

Semiconductor manufacturing requires substantial amounts of water, including large chiller systems that regulate temperature and humidity within the manufacturing process to ensure chip quality. Freescale Semiconductor has made a commitment to reduce its manufacturing operations' water consumption by 50 percent by 2015.

To help achieve this commitment, an alternative to municipal fresh water was considered for use in the Oak Hill facility's cooling system — the water used in the manufacturing process to wash the surface of the silicon wafers after polishing. However, contaminants from the wash process could cause numerous problems in the cooling system, including corrosion or microbio fouling and scale buildup that can reduce cooling efficiency.

By implementing Nalco's Green Chemistry award-winning 3D TRASAR® Technology for Cooling Water, Freescale is safely using the reclaimed manufacturing process water. Using fluorescent molecules tagged to water treatment chemicals and a fluorescent bio-reporter molecule, the 3D TRASAR system can continuously monitor and adjust Nalco's patented chemistry to the appropriate level to protect Freescale's cooling system.

In addition, Freescale's Oak Hill site is now using Nalco's PORTA-FEED® Delivery System, which provides "hands-off" chemical handling through a variety of returnable chemical containers. These units replace the need for traditional 55-gallon drums, improving employee safety and reducing the likelihood of spills or leaks and eliminating waste.
