Multi Umwelttechnologie AG has over 15 years experience with culture media for immobilising micro-organisms during the treatment of sewage water.

During this time, we have used almost every known carrier in many different large plants, types of sewage water and areas of application. The knowledge that we have gained as a result, along with the comprehensive data material, enables us to make a well-founded assessment of the specific performance data of the in some cases extremely different carriers.

Since Multi Umwelttechnologie AG was at no time linked to a particular supplier, we were able - on the basis of the operational experience gained - to undertake targeted optimisation either of the carrier itself or the process conditions. The emphasis here was on minimising operational problems arising from the weaknesses of "conventional" culture media that these days cannot be overlooked.

The thorough implementation of our requirements for an optimum carrier led to one result: the Mutag BioChip™. From our point of view, this is currently the "best available carrier" specifically for purifying types of sewage water that are difficult to treat.

Itáu Unibanco is the first financial institution in Brazil to achieve FSC Chain of Custody (FSC CoC) certification for its own print unit. With 51 tons of paper used annually, Itaú’s decision to print invoices, statements, and other institutional documents on FSC certified paper is a milestone for FSC in Brazil.

Itaú has also started an education program to promote the benefits of FSC certification among partners and employees. Itaú’s commitment to FSC confirms the increasing awareness of FSC among Brazilian businesses and consumers. São Paulo’s daily newspaper Metro, with a circulation of over 150,000, is also printing on FSC paper.

Friends of the Earth – Brazilian Amazonia conducted a poll in 2009 to assess the knowledge of the population on environmental issues. Results showed that recognition of FSC among the Brazilian public has increased to 22% in 2009 from 1% in 2006. They also showed that 81% of the population would prefer certified forest products, and are willing to pay a little more than for non-certified products.

FutureMark™ Paper Company, the only North American manufacturer capable of producing up to 100 percent recycled coated paper for magazines and catalogs, announced two new initiatives to lower the environmental impact of paper production. The company is now using an environmentally sustainable binding compound made from corn starch in its paper coatings instead of petroleum-based latex. Furthermore, FutureMark has developed an innovative product that reuses the short paper fibers, inks and coating minerals extracted from recycled paper as a soil nutrient.

“Making recycled paper in an environmentally friendly way has long been a point of pride for FutureMark and our employees,” said Steve Silver, President & CEO of FutureMark Paper Company. “With these two advancements, we’re further reducing the environmental impact of our manufacturing processes, while returning nutrients to the earth and making incremental improvements to our very high-quality recycled paper.”

The New L&W Moisture Tester

Correct moisture content is of absolutely vital significance for all grades of paper. The accurate measurement values assist the machine crew in keeping an even and high product quality. Alternations, which influence the quality, are quickly traced before leading to waste and costly breakdowns. New L&W Moisture Tester is a high precision offline benchtop moisture meter for production control and verification of online systems.

The instrument is based on Lorentzen & Wettre’s microwave moisture sensors, known worldwide within the pulp and paper industry. It measures and calculates the moisture content and the dry basis weight of paper, paper board, corrugated board, dry pulp and other fibre materials.

The microwave technique gives reliable measurement values, independent of the grade produced, including waste paper. Measurement results are neither affected by curled materials, nor by an uneven surface or a multilayer structure.

The tester is fast and easy to use. L&W Moisture Tester measures the moisture content on a large and representative number of samples in just a few seconds so there is no need for time consuming and labour intensive gravimetric testing. The operator simply takes a sample from the machine, puts it on the balance for a few seconds and then moves it through the measuring gap.

With L&W Moisture Tester it is possible to check the moisture content in all stages in the process chain:
• pulp sheets before leaving the pulp mill
• incoming pulp sheets before processing in paper mill
• paper products in the converting plant

L&W Moisture Tester is also suitable for trouble shooting since it checks the online sensors if there is an out of specification indication.

“It is always with great pride we release a new product – but there is always an element of uncertainty as well as one can never anticipate the market reaction to newly developed instruments.
In this case the feed-back from the market has been quicker than ever and the initial interest has been overwhelmingly positive. We therefore expect quite a lot from our new L&W Moisture Tester – the latest of our instruments based on microwave technology.”, says Fredrik Bosröm, Vice President Marketing at Lorentzen & Wettre.

Australian Paper launchs 7 new paper products

Australian-made and owned carbon neutral paper, creating tonnes of sustainable value
•  Australian Paper launch seven new carbon neutral paper stock varieties
•  Carbon neutral paper helping to improve companies triple bottom line reporting
•  New range set to save 15,000 tonnes of greenhouse emissions in 2010

In response to overwhelming customer demand, Australian Paper, the nations only carbon neutral paper producer, has announced the introduction of seven new carbon neutral grades that will be widely available through a range of new distribution partnerships.

Paul Allen, Australian Paper GM Marketing, said the carbon neutral stock will create a tonne of sustainable value by helping government and listed companies hit carbon reduction targets and improve triple bottom line reporting figures.

“With Australian Paper’s new range of Australian owned and made carbon neutral paper, we are giving procurement and production departments a choice they can be proud of.

“We are helping government and big business walk the talk on sustainability,” Mr Allen said.

“Our new grades will nullify more than 15,000 tonnes of harmful greenhouse emissions in 2010, so something as simple as the choice of paper can have a huge impact on environmental performance. The stock has independently certified metrics as to the amount of CO2 avoided through the use of the grade; metrics that will improve their ‘People, Planet and Profits’ reporting.”

2014 12 08 091144Alfa Laval – a world leader in heat transfer, centrifugal separation and fluid handling – has received an order for an evaporation system to a pulp and paper mill plant in Malaysia. The order value is about 50 MSEK and delivery will be completed in 2011.

The Alfa Laval evaporation system will be used in a process to concentrate black liquor, a by-product from the pulp and paper production, for further re-use as fuel in the plant. In addition the steam, which is the result from the concentration process, will be condensed and re-used as water in the process thus further reducing the environmental impact of the plant.
“The new plant is designed to enable a higher concentration of the black liquor than industry average, which will result in a better quality of the fuel as well as more process water recovered for the plant. All in all, an environmentally sound solution”, says Lars Renström, President and CEO of the Alfa Laval Group.

Did you know… that the Alfa Laval process solution results in such high quality of the black liquor that it can supply the majority of the plant’s energy demand?

NewPage Corporation, North America's largest coated paper manufacturer, announced today the release of a new On Paper podcast featuring Jill Dumain, director of environmental strategy for Patagonia. This is the second episode in season three of the popular series designed to bring about positive change in the area of sustainability across industries.

In this episode of On Paper, Dumain explains how Patagonia , a leading producer of quality outdoor clothing, uses business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis. Through participation in numerous organizations and industry efforts, Patagonia has collaborated with suppliers and competitors alike, to minimize the potential impact their worldwide supply chain and production practices could have on the earth.

“We realize our company is much smaller than the people we have the potential to influence,” explains Dumain. “We have to influence companies larger than us if we are going to reach that ultimate goal.”

As a founding member of the Organic Exchange, a business-to-business effort to stabilize the organic fiber market, Patagonia helped balance fiber supply with demand and as a result the Exchange is now examining the broader topic of sustainable textiles. And through participation in the Outdoor Industry Association's Eco-Working Group, Patagonia is helping to develop an eco-index for consumer products which will help outdoor companies, both large and small, measure where they are on the environmental impact scale, in turn offering guidance to make informed decisions regarding the production of their goods.

It is experiences like these, Dumain shares with On Paper, that have shown other companies the benefit of sharing environmental research, even with competitors.

“We can work behind the scenes and share this information, that really is pre-competitive, and still compete on the merits of our design, durability, color, style,” Dumain explains. “It's very powerful because it takes a lot of time to do environmental research and work. If you can share that with colleagues in other companies, everybody moves ahead so much faster.”
