In Russia, the demand for innovative, high-quality tissue products, including disposable items following the pandemic, has increased significantly in recent years. For this reason, Syassky PPM, one of the most important paper mills in Russia, already active in the Roll sector, has decided to expand its product portfolio by relying on Körber Business Area Tissue’s Fold division.

The ITF series interfolders make use of the most advanced electronic and mechanical technologies to always guarantee the quality of the finished product in every converting context, combined with high production capacity, reliability, and high efficiency.

These folding machines were conceived to be tailor-made for the customer, with high levels of customization. In fact, customers can choose the size of the final product as well as various other options.

Syassky PPM represented a further challenge for Körber. The current epidemiological situation linked to the COVID-19 pandemic risked slowing down the installation of the line, and the delay could have cost Syassky PPM precious business opportunities.

The close collaboration between Syassky PPM's mechanical and electrical engineering team and that of the Körber XpertTechnicians made it possible to install the line on schedule, just like usual installations with Körber technicians in attendance.

Sale Follows Company’s Continued Growth and Success Driving Sustainability and Operational Efficiency in Water-Intensive Industries

Clayton, Dubilier & Rice (“CD&R”) today announced an agreement under which its portfolio company, Solenis, will be acquired by Platinum Equity. The transaction, expected to close before the end of 2021, implies an enterprise value for Solenis of $5.25 billion. CD&R and Solenis management currently collectively own 51% of Solenis, and chemical company BASF holds the remaining 49%. Both CD&R and BASF will fully exit Solenis as part of the transaction announced today.

Global hygiene and health company Essity invests approximately EUR 11m (approximately SEK 110m) in its Hondouville mill in France, allowing to extract 98% of paper fibers contained in food and beverage cartons.

Since 2008, Essity’s Hondouville mill has been the leading recycler in France of food and beverage cartons, currently recycling more than 63% of all cartons that are sorted, collected, and recycled in the country*. This new investment will allow Essity to increase the recycling capacity of cartons to 24,000 tons a year. The fibers from these cartons are used in the fiber mix to manufacture Tork branded products within Professional Hygiene.

Designed as one of the most efficient specialty paper machines in the world, Koehler Paper commissioned Voith's production line 8 at its Kehl mill at the end of October 2019 - after a previous project time of only around two and a half years.

Thanks to ongoing optimization, the company recently achieved a groundbreaking level of performance for the production of around 40 gsm base paper at a continuous speed of more than 1,400 m/min. Thanks to intensive cooperation, permanent project support and continuous optimization from Koehler and Voith, the line achieved an average speed of 1,410 m/min over a period of 24 hours as well as a maximum value of 1,432 m/min - a world record for the MG paper machine.

On the occasion of this event, Voith presented Koehler Paper with an engraved glass plate that records this historic speed record. At the award ceremony at the Kehl mill last week, Dr. Michael Trefz, President Projects at Voith, was pleased to present the recognition: "An outstanding value, which was made possible by the cooperation between Koehler and Voith, the combination of extensive technical knowledge and a long-standing and trusting partnership. Koehler and Voith are thus once again demonstrating their pioneering spirit in paper production." Joint development of trailblazing packaging paper products
Another outcome of the collaboration between Koehler and Voith is the development of cutting-edge products. As part of the development partnership for new paper grades, Voith carried out several test series on the R&D pilot coater at the Voith Paper Technology Center in Heidenheim. The technological requirements of the new paper grades were investigated in depth and then implemented in the new production line. This has resulted in the innovative products of the NexFlex® product line, Koehler's flexible packaging paper.

State-of-the-art technologies for effective production
With a volume of 300 million euros, the entire production line 8 is one of the largest investments in Koehler's history. As well as the XcelLine paper machine and a offline coating machine, the project includes a BlueLine stock preparation system including wet end process and a VariPlus winder. The facility is designed to produce around 100,000 tons per year of various paper grades. An offline coating machine enables variable coating orders and combinations, resulting in an enormous range of grades. This extensive range of different paper grades and basis weights from 22 gsm to 95 gsm is another unique selling point of the production line. PM 8 paper machine thus supplies already finished paper and raw paper for the further finishing process.

A special technical highlight is the MG cylinder, which has a diameter of 7,315 mm, the largest of its kind worldwide at the time of installation. The cylinder gives the paper its unique smoothness, which is essential for optimum downstream processing. Thanks to the MCB air dryers, the coated paper is dried extremely gently and without contact, while at the same time maintaining high thermal efficiency. A special calender design ensures final calendering of the specialty papers.

International technology group ANDRITZ is supplying major energy-efficient and environmentally friendly pulp production technologies and key process equipment for Bracell’s Project “STAR” in the city of Lençóis Paulista, São Paulo state, Brazil.

The mill features two flexible, environmentally friendly hardwood fiberlines for a capacity of 2.6 – 2.8 million tons/year of bleached kraft pulp or 1.5 million tons/year of dissolving pulp, which is used as raw material for the production of viscose. ANDRITZ was awarded this contract in July 2019, and start-up is scheduled for August 2021.

Bracell, one of the largest global producers of dissolving pulp and special pulp, is finalizing its Project Star work to expand the company's operations in Lençóis Paulista, in the interior of São Paulo state. The plant, which is one of the largest and most sustainable pulp mills in the world, will start operating in mid-August 2021, with a production capacity of up to three million tons per year. The project is outstanding due to its sustainable DNA, featuring advanced technology, operating entirely free of fossil fuel, and using renewable raw materials to create biodegradable products.

According to Pedro Stefanini, General Director of Bracell SP, the technologies applied in Project Star aim to make production in the mill even more sustainable. “The project is much more than a pulp mill. It is the future of the bioindustry. Here we will have the largest and cleanest recovery boiler in the world, equipped with state-of-the-art technologies that are not yet used on an industrial scale in the region,” says Pedro Stefanini.

ANDRITZ is providing – on EPCC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Civil Construction) basis – four of the six most important process islands in the pulp mill:

  • A complete Wood Processing Plant using ANDRITZ’s proven technologies and including four chipping lines, two stacker-reclaimers, eight chip screening units, biomass handling with two ANDRITZ BioCrushers, and biomass storage. Each chipping line for eucalyptus processing includes ANDRITZ’s unique, horizontally fed HHQ-Chipper (EXL model), ensuring high capacity and optimum chip quality. Woodyard operation is enhanced with state-of-the-art Metris – ANDRITZ digital solutions, featuring artificial intelligence and digital sensors. The plant includes ChipperEKG, stone detection, the ScanChip chip analyzer, and a FlowScanner, which measures the density and moisture content of the chips to optimize the fiberline process and minimize wood consumption.
  • An ANDRITZ HERB Recovery Boiler with high steam parameters of 101 bar(a) and 515°C to maximize power generation. This is the largest recovery boiler in the world, with the capacity to burn total solids of 13,000 tons per day, and it is being equipped with state-of-the-art technologies not yet used in the region so far on an industrial scale. The state-of-the-art boiler will not only make the mill self-sufficient in energy supply but will additionally produce around 180 megawatts of green energy that will be fed to the Brazilian grid to supply roughly three million people with clean energy. The HERB Recovery Boiler features energy-efficient flue gas cooling and feed water preheating technologies to maximize steam production for power generation. It is designed for extended operating periods without requiring wash water.
  • Two environmentally friendly hardwood Fiberlines, for capacities of 2.6 to 2.8 million t/y of kraft pulp or 1.5 million t/y of dissolving pulp, that process certified eucalyptus trees ensure low effluent emissions and also include a chip feed system, LoSolids continuous cooking system with Pre-Hydrolysis Vessel (PHV), screen room and bleach plant as well as ANDRITZ’s DD-Washer technology, ensuring low operating costs, low emissions, extremely high washing efficiency, and excellent fiber quality. The cooking plant for the fiberline is state of the art in the continuous cooking process for production of dissolving pulp. 
  • Two innovative EvoDry Pulp Drying Systems for the most energy-efficient pulp drying based on the high-capacity Twin Wire Former technology, with airborne dryers, cutter-layboy and baling lines. The approach flow with cleaner systems ensures homogeneous pulp feed to the subsequent process stage for both types of pulps – dissolving and kraft. The pulp dewatering machine comprises a headbox with dilution control, a Twin Wire Former, and a press section with one combi-press and two shoe presses. The ANDRITZ technology for pulp drying is very well proven all over the world. The ANDRITZ cutter-layboy provides the pulp bales to be further processed in the high-capacity baling lines, where the final pulp bale units are produced.
  • ANDRITZ is also supplying a Non-Condensable Gas (NCG) treatment system that enables safe and environmentally friendly treatment of all types of diluted or concentrated malodorous gases, thus meeting the strictest environmental and social requirements. The gases are collected and eliminated by waste gas incinerator with quenching as well as flue gas scrubbers. The NCG incineration system is based on the “A-Recovery+” concept developed by ANDRITZ, focusing on the use of side streams in the recovery cycle.

Endress+Hauser announces an expansion of its partnership with sales representative Field Instruments and Controls in the Pacific Northwest region. Effective July 1, 2021, Field Instruments and Controls will be Endress+Hauser’s Authorized Service Provider for OR, WA and the ID panhandle.

Clear commitment to connect and restore half a million hectares of Cerrado, Amazon and Atlantic Forest biomes in Brazil by 2030

Suzano, the world's leading eucalyptus pulp and paper producer and a global benchmark in the manufacture of bioproducts developed from eucalyptus, announced a new, long-term biodiversity conservation target on 25 June 2021 at its inaugural ESG Investor Presentation.

The ambitious target that Suzano has set will connect half a million hectares of priority conservation areas in Brazil by 2030, specifically focused on the Cerrado, Amazon and Atlantic Forest biomes. This area covers an expanse of land that is equivalent in size to the combined cities of Paris, Madrid, Moscow, Oslo and Rio de Janeiro.

2021 06 28 093020The biodiversity target is the result of research and mapping done by Suzano and the Ecofuturo Institute over the past year. Suzano is committed to conservation best practice and adherence to Brazilian and international policies. To ensure this, Suzano carried out an extensive engagement and consultation phase with over 50 domestic and international stakeholders including NGOs, public and private sector organizations and the academic community. The research enabled Suzano to ascertain and assess both the opportunities and challenges associated with preserving biodiversity in the regions in Brazil that are most in need of protection.

Suzano identified that the most impactful way to support biodiversity would be to reverse the fragmentation of habitats by creating ‘biodiversity corridors’. Fragmentation is one of the primary threats to biomes in Brazil and by 2030, Suzano will work tirelessly with local and international stakeholders to connect approximately 1,850 isolated forest fragments mitigating and where possible, eradicating, threats to biodiversity across regions.

Suzano will focus on the connection of biomes in regions where it owns forests, as well as protecting existing natural habitats and conservation areas as defined by Brazil’s Ministry of Environment and the designated Full Protection Conservation Units according to the National System of Conservation Units (SNUC).

To reach this goal, Suzano is focused on connecting, engaging and protecting. Based on these pillars, the company will act strategically by implementing biodiversity corridors, creating a network of Protected Areas, conserving populations of primates and palm trees, establishing business models that generate shared value and biodiverse production, in addition to actions to reduce impact drivers on biodiversity as a result of human action. For this it may also encourage ecosystem services, including carbon credits.

The biodiversity challenges that Suzano wants to address through the new biodiversity target include minimizing harmful changes to the ecological makeup of the landscape, reduction of genetic variability and potential extinction caused by the isolation of species, loss of resilience to climate change, and imbalances of natural pests and diseases.

Suzano’s broader conservation and biodiversity efforts include maintaining a database monitoring over 2,700 plant, bird and mammal species, including endangered species. Suzano’s sizeable existing 960,000-hectare conservation area is already distributed mainly in the Cerrado, Atlantic Forest and Amazon biomes in Brazil. These regions include permanent preservation areas and legal reserves (as required by Brazilian law), as well as highly valuable land earmarked for conversation voluntarily by the company, totaling 57,000 hectares of habitats of vital importance for both Brazil and the world.

In addition to the new biodiversity target, Suzano has committed to achieving additional ambitious ESG related targets by 2030. This includes: (i) developing and producing 10 million tons of renewable-origin products derived from biomass which will replace plastics and other petroleum products; (ii) removing the equivalent of 40 million tons of carbon equivalent from the atmosphere; and (iii) directly contributing to lifting approximately 200,000 people living in the regions where it operates out of poverty.
