International technology Group ANDRITZ has successfully started up a new 500 t/d HERB chemical recovery boiler at Kuantum Papers Limited in Saila Khurd, Hoshiapur district in the state of Punjab, India.

The boiler is designed to handle a mixture of hardwood and agro-based black liquor and enables environmentally friendly and more energy-efficient operation compared to a conventional boiler with direct contact evaporator. Thus, the mill’s pulp production as well as the power-to-heat-ratio are substantially increased. The boiler also features a unique vertical air system to minimize air emissions.

The scope of supply also comprised:

  • Engineering for the entire system except civil work and electrical and automation equipment
  • Complete pressure parts
  • Auxiliaries such as start-up oil burners, black liquor burners, smelt spouts
  • Safety-related system (SRS)

The papermaking process starts with pulping and separation of coarse contaminants to prepare the pulp for the subsequent cleaning steps. Based on its many years of expertise, Voith Paper now introduces the latest technology within the BlueLine stock preparation – the IntensaDrum Duo, a two-piece drum pulper. The machine, suitable for recovered paper, is perfect for very high production volumes and is characterized by extreme robustness and high reliability and efficiency. The two-piece modular design corresponds to the IntensaDrum ID45XL, which has been used successfully many times for smaller production quantities.

Maximum robustness for large production volumes
How well the machine concept works in practice is demonstrated by the installation of the IntensaDrum Duo at the company Progroup as part of the Taurus PM 3 project in Germany. With a diameter of 4.5 m each, the 48 m long drum pulper and the 23 m long screening drum have since then been processing 3,000 tons of recovered paper per day. The total length of the IntensaDrum Duo, which weighs over 300 tons, is 78 meters. This makes the stock preparation plant in the Taurus project the largest of its kind in the world.

Advantages of a two-piece design
In order to enable this high production volume with a one-piece drum pulper, the free hanging areas would have to be significantly enlarged. This would significantly increase the dynamic loads in all directions and lead to extreme design challenges. With the two-piece design, Voith has successfully overcome these technical limitations of one-piece single drums. The ability to run very high production volumes over one drum pulper and thus also over one stock preparation line leads to a significant reduction in investment and operating costs.

2021 04 13 110450

High mechanical engineering quality combined with long experience
IntensaDrum Duo processes the production volumes of two standard drum pulpers. As only one pulper is now required and the complete production is processed in one line, maintenance and servicing costs can be significantly reduced. At the same time, the IntensaDrum Duo impresses with its enormous robustness due to its modular design.

"The IntensaDrum Duo is based on the same drum design as the IntensaDrum ID45XL,” says Pierre-Haakon Berger, Global Product Manager for drum pulpers at Voith Paper. “Many customers use the IntensaDrum successfully for small and medium production volumes. When developing the IntensaDrum Duo, we were therefore able to utilize the experience from this size. Standard machine components also ensure high engineering quality in the design of the IntensaDrum Duo. Compared to a one-piece design, the two-piece IntensaDrum Duo offers significant advantages with these dimensions in terms of transport and installation."

Resource-saving process
Special lifting bars guide the suspension in the pulping area from the bottom and almost to the top. Once at the top, the suspension falls back onto the drum body. Since there is no rotor to reduce the size of the reject, the process is extremely careful. The fibers and reject are also gently separated in the screening section. In addition, water from the shower pipes can enter the drum through the screening area so that the fibers can be efficiently washed away from the reject. Also, the absence of wear parts results in a constant accept quality of the stock as well as lower production and shutdown costs.

2021 04 13 110514

Berger adds, "Due to the very gentle pulping process, the recycled fibers are disintegrated without shear forces. This process is particularly gentle on resources because foreign materials, for example plastic, are not destroyed and can therefore be sorted out at an early stage."

For more information on the proven IntensaDrum and the new IntensaDrum Duo, please follow this link: www.voith.com/pulping.

You can also experience the drum pulpers via augmented reality: for this, please download the IntensaDrum app onto your tablet or smartphone via the Google or Apple app store. Subsequently, experience the interactive functions by activating the AR mode in the lower right corner and following the instructions on the screen.

Digital sheet break solution provides a root cause analysis within one minute and acts as early warning system in a way not possible with current manual solutions

ABB has released Sheet Break Performance, an ABB Ability™ Performance Service that automatically curates, calculates and contextualizes key data points into an intuitive user interface to reduce the time to identify the root cause of sheet breaks for swift corrective action, while also determining optimal operational parameters to help prevent unplanned downtime.

The digital service quickly pinpoints the underlying issues and recurring trends that prohibit optimum performance in paper mills and specifically addresses pain points such as frequent sheet breaks, long recovery times and increases in paper rejects.

The diagnosis and root cause identification of each sheet break event is traditionally performed manually by operators who often need to access the information from different sources, such as process control systems, drives and quality management systems. This requires the breakdown of data from multiple systems and interactions between process variables, which is time consuming.

ABB’s digital offering, which is built on a powerful combination of a proprietary analytics engine, advanced algorithms and online monitoring , provides a root cause analysis within one minute after the break.

2021 04 14 105739

With the ability to monitor the real time variations in the operating parameters as well as the interactions between the various sections of the paper machine, operators are alerted to abnormalities and detrimental changes in the system that could lead to sheet breaks. This serves as an early warning system allowing the operators to take corrective actions and prevent unplanned downtime.

This switch from manual to digital analysis can prove to be a useful stepping stone in a mill’s transformation and can also help to make a mill more sustainable by lowering energy usage, raw material and water footprint while improving fiber recovery. Plus, it reduces safety concerns with operators less frequently having to enter the dryer to extract broken paper.

“ Unlike similar offerings, ABB’s deep process and domain expertise - coupled with an integrated data fusion technique that curates and contextualizes data from multiple sources - provides a holistic view across multiple systems and processes for both customer and ABB experts to better identify root causes of sheet breaks and prevent downtime ,” says Ramesh Satini, Global Product Manager, Pulp & Paper Control Systems, ABB.

“ This overcomes the issue of mills having limited time or resource to manage manual break analysis, which cannot account for correlation among hundreds of process parameters and their impact on each other. ABB guides operations and fast-tracks improvement initiatives with recommended grade-specific parameters and predictive alerts to maximize operational effectiveness. ”

Delivered via the ABB Ability™ Collaborative Operations service delivery model, it is fully integrated with ABB Ability™ Analytics framework, with on-premise or cloud deployment options.

After a complete dryer section rebuild supplied by Toscotec, Cartiera di Ferrara fired up PM1 at its mill in Ferrara, Italy. Toscotec modified the entire dryer section, without changing its overall length and therefore leaving the positions of the press and the pope reel unchanged. This allowed for a very short shutdowntime because civil works were not necessary to achieve the planned production increase. The paper machine achieved stable production immediately after start-up.

Toscotec refurbished the first dryer section with the supply of new felt rolls, guide and stretchers, and a modification of the frame structure. The second section was completely rebuilt with 16 new TT SteelDryers of 1,829 mm diameter designed for an operating steam pressure of 10 barg. Toscotec supplied new silent drives for the transmission of the entire dryer section that significantly improved PM1’s conditions for operation and maintenance. The scope comprised a full set of services, including mechanical erection, supervision, commissioning, and start-up assistance.

Cartiera di Ferrara, Italy.Cartiera di Ferrara, Italy.

Alessandro Castelletti, Mill Manager of Cartiera di Ferrara, says: “Toscotec executed the rebuild with competence and according to the agreed time plan. We boosted PM1’s operating speed because of the increased drying capacity of our new dryer section. We will progressively continue to raise the speed as we still have margin. The production is stable, and we are happy with the results we achieved so far.”

Stefano Baldi, Toscotec Project Manager, says: “We lived up to the double challenge of a tight project schedule that began right before Italy enforced nationwide Covid-19 restrictions. We managed to complete on time the pre-assembly phases during lockdown, and then finalized the installation according to schedule. We are happy to see that Cartiera di Ferrara is already increasing their production capacity as a result of this rebuild.”
