Survey Finds College Students Believe Saving the Planet is Important, But They Think Paper is Still Essential for Life's Big Moments

Most college students in a new nationwide poll rank themselves as environmentally conscious and two-thirds believe going paperless helps the environment, but they draw the line at electronic copies for key documents - especially when it comes to college diplomas.

The nationwide poll found that while college juniors and seniors believe going paperless helps the environment, fewer than 30 percent would give up printed books, magazines and newspapers, photos or official documents. And nearly 70 percent said the idea of receiving an electronic copy of their diplomas either bothered them or they considered it so terrible that they hated it. Only 4 percent of the respondents said they would "love" the idea of a paperless college diploma at graduation.

"This is hardly a superfluous scrap of paper," one of the respondents said. "Doggone it, I've worked my butt off in school, and I want a piece of paper on my wall to prove it."

The nationwide survey was conducted by Eric Mower and Associates and commissioned by Domtar, one of North America's leading paper companies. Researchers contacted 420 college juniors and seniors nationwide between April 16 to 20 to ask them their views on what they could do to protect the environment and personal paper usage. The survey has a margin of error of 5 percentage points. The complete survey results are available at www.domtar.com/diploma.

"A document like a college diploma should be handed to the graduate in paper," said one student. "It is something that people take great pride in and want to show to people, frame and hold in their hands."

"While it's important to use paper responsibly, there are also myths about paper that should be dispelled. There will always be times when a substitute won't do, because paper is simply more convenient, more effective and more meaningful," said Lewis Fix, Vice President of Brand Management and Sustainable Product Development at Domtar. "Business gets done on paper, people learn on paper, love is declared on paper and rights are guaranteed on paper. Even students who identify themselves as environmentally conscious recognize the importance of paper."

The survey also found that:

- When it comes to studying at school, 52 percent of students like
materials on paper. Twenty-three percent report they prefer hard copies
of most notes and professors also print out class materials. Another
29 percent of students said that while they like hard copies, their
professors tend to send out electronic copies.
- Students clearly prefer paper copies of key documents. Less than a
third of the students want electronic copies of their legal contracts
(29 percent), real estate deeds (25 percent), marriage licenses
(23 percent), birth certificates (17 percent), passports (15 percent)
or drivers' licenses (12 percent).
- College juniors and seniors identified the top four ways they
personally display environmental consciousness include turning off
power when electronic devices aren't being used (81 percent), recycling
(75 percent), using less water (54 percent) and doing only full loads
of laundry or hanging clothes to dry (53 percent). Thirty-six percent
say they are "going paperless" to display their environmental
consciousness, ranking it fifth in the survey.
- Less than 30 percent would give up printed books, magazines and
newspapers, photos or official documents. However, more than 60 percent
of students would be comfortable going paperless with bank statements,
class schedules/grade reports and bills.
>>

"The survey shows that college students are certainly concerned about the planet's future, and want to take steps to reduce their impact - we find that very encouraging," Fix said. "It's also interesting that even with all of the electronic options available to today's youth that paper is still important - whether in the classroom as the medium for their education - or on the wall as a symbol of years of hard work and dedication."

"Something could always go wrong with electronics," one student said of their reason for wanting a printed diploma. "Diplomas are important mementos."

"Getting a diploma over an email makes it seem so much less official," commented another student in the survey. "You worked for it like mad, and gave the school thousands of dollars, the least they could do for you is give you that piece of paper."

As part of the survey, students were asked how they typically send personal notes at an important moment to someone they really care about. Thirty-one percent said they write it on paper, because it's more meaningful and the recipient would appreciate it more. A note on paper beat out a phone call (27 percent), text (22 percent) and email (20 percent).

When it comes to landing a job after graduation, 47 percent of students say they will send out resumes electronically, while 27 percent report they will send out both electronic and paper resumes and 17 percent say they prefer to send their resumes on paper. "It was interesting to see the weight students place on using paper for documents that are important to them - everything from their college diploma to textbooks to personal notes to key people in their lives," Fix said. "For some reason when it comes to their resume - a critical first step in building a career, the largest share of students plan to use email to reach potential employers. Based on how they react to a document on paper, they may want to rethink relying solely on electronic copies of their resumes."

Domtar invests in projects to increase forest certification and reduce the environmental impact of its operations. Because of this, Domtar has earned the support of respected environmental organizations. More than three-fourths of the energy used at Domtar mills comes from renewable, carbon neutral sources, and Domtar has cut green house gas emissions by 33 percent since 2002 - far exceeding the requirements of the Kyoto Protocol.

"Domtar is at the forefront of the responsible use of paper in part because the future of our business is linked to a healthy environment and the availability of both virgin and recycled fiber. We're not just a paper company, we're a sustainable paper company," Fix says. "Students should not feel guilty about using our paper, because paper is a plant based product that is renewable, sustainable and recycled with ease."

Cascades' latest clean sweep

The antibacterial paper towel Cascades has been busily working to develop for five years is launching at an opportune time. In the aftermath of H1N1 where concern over the spread of germs remains high, the paper company’s latest offering is specifically designed to slash the amount of bacteria transmitted by hand contact.

The towel is targeted towards the food-processing and restaurant sectors, as well as high-traffic areas including aircraft and cruise ships, medical clinics, schools and daycares. It will be green in colour.

“This innovation response to a need for improved hand hygiene that is frequently cited by public health experts in recent years,” CEO Alain Lemaire said of the paper.

"IPEX 2010 was well attended and our customers showed great interest in our new products and services," says a satisfied Bernhard Schreier, CEO of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg), in summing up the trade show. More than 50,000 international visitors came to Birmingham between May 18 and 25, 2010 to find out about the numerous innovations being showcased by Heidelberg under the "HEI Performance and HEI Value" banner. "We received numerous orders for equipment and services from all over the world and in all market segments, including around 900 printing units in all formats and over 90 postpress machines. The positive mood in the industry is continuing thanks to the tangible upward trend," adds Schreier. Customers from the UK, Chinese, and Indian markets were particularly keen to invest.

The solutions offered by Heidelberg were geared to customer needs and covered market trends such as lean manufacturing, short-run color printing, green printing, and web-to-print. There were tailor-made solutions to suit each and every customer - from small family businesses to large companies and from industrialized nations to emerging markets. The presentations in the center of the Heidelberg stand put the focus on the company's Services and the Prinect workflow, which make customers even more competitive.

The Speedmaster CX 102, which was making its global debut at IPEX 2010, caught big attention. By the end of the event, 15 of these presses with a total of more than 90 printing units had been sold worldwide, thereby opening up a new market segment. The CX 102 is printing with a production speed of 16,500 sheets per hour and lies between the Speedmaster SM 102 / CD 102 and the Speedmaster XL 105. Its high productivity and great flexibility make the CX 102 suitable for both commercial and packaging printers. The Speedmaster SM 52 Anicolor with new coating unit and short delivery also sold well. This compact press enables customers to apply a wide variety of surface finishes with extremely short make-ready times.

A Belgian customer invested for example in a Speedmaster XL 75 with Prinect Inpress Control, Autoplate XL and the new CleanStar. This combination ensures environmental friendly print production through a dramatic reduction in waste and dust levels in the pressroom. One UK customer ordered not one but three Speedmaster XL 105 presses with a total of 32 printing units - all with Prinect Inpress Control, Autoplate XL, and CutStar - for a highly industrialized production facility. The final item in this order was a KH 82 folding machine. A Chinese print shop ordered three Speedmaster CD 102 presses and one Speedmaster SM 74, representing a total of 19 printing units. And the production operations of a Russian customer will soon be boosted by a Eurobind 1300 adhesive binder. All the prepress, press, and postpress machines displayed at the show were sold to customers, too.

heidelberg_servicesThe service and workflow presentations proved to be a big draw. Small and medium-sized print shops in particular were impressed by the new Prinect S workflow, which provides a fast and reliable entry level solution to lean print production. Heidelberg also announced new partnerships with local MIS and Web-to-Print suppliers. Last but not least, there was great interest in the company's Saphira consumables, which produce optimum results on Heidelberg equipment. "We were able to provide our customers with a credible and touchable demonstration of our state-of-the-art technologies and comprehensive range of services to boost competitiveness," confirms Schreier. "We will also introduce a digital printing solution and will then be able to offer the technology with the best price-performance ratio for the particular business model. This is a logical step for our customers because it is understood that offset and digital printing complement each other," he adds.

According to George Clarke, Managing Director of Heidelberg UK and this year's IPEX President, IPEX 2010 was a "recovery show" heidelberg_consultingand by far the most important IPEX ever for the industry. "Visitor numbers were just as high as at the last IPEX four years ago and many decision-makers from around the globe attended the event. We have taken orders for 140 printing units in all formats for the UK alone," says a confident Clarke.

The HEI Productivity and HEI Eco tours also proved extremely popular. Consultancy services and measures to ensure green production are exactly what print shops are looking for. Heidelberg demonstrated its consistent approach to environmental protection by carbon neutralizing its entire trade show presentation.

On April 23rd, 2010, judges at the 7th All-Russian Forest Lesprom Awards in Moscow named STEP “The Russian Pulp and Paper industry’s investment project of the year”. Mondi Syktyvkar also won the mill award for “The pulp and paper industry’s most dynamically developing company”.

Syktyvkar, Komi Republic of Russia, May 27th, 2010 –  Mondi Syktyvkar launched the STEP project in July 2008 as the most immense mill upgrade in the mill’s 40-year history. Having been official named the investment project of the year at this year’s Lesprom Awards, the STEP project has achieved many of its main targets:

·         To replace obsolete technologies

·         To make the mill even safer for the health of employees

·         To make the mill more environmentally friendly

·         To increase the quality and competitiveness of the products

In reference to Mondi Syktyvkar’s awards, Gerhard Kornfeld CEO of Mondi Syktyvkar said, “The mill staff is very committed to our overall operations. This attitude has also contributed to the productivity at the mill and Mondi Syktyvkar receiving this award for dynamic development.  Major financial volumes and energy went into the STEP project – it is a very important award for us and it confirms Mondi Group’s position as one of the most prominent companies in the Russian Pulp and Paper Industry.”

Despite the preceding year’s difficult financial climate, which affected the industry as a whole, the STEP project continued forward and managed to set new productivity records in January 2010. The Lesprom award jury evaluated Mondi Syktyvkar’s achievements based on financial indicators, dynamics of profitability, and optimization processes.

Lesprom Network, the information and trading system, first founded the awards in 2002 to credit those members of the forest business community for their significant developments and investments in the Forest Complex of Russia. Alexey Savinov, head of the Federal Forest Agency, chaired this year’s jury. Major Russian and international forest companies, as well as Russian government representatives attended the award ceremony.

Hartmann performed well in Q1 2010

Hartmann performed well in Q1 2010 with an EBIT margin of 9.8% (2009: 3.2%). As expected, the positive trend witnessed in the latest quarters thus continued in 2010, as the '10 in 10' initiatives implemented took full effect. Hartmann maintains its full-year forecast for 2010.

Peter Arndrup Poulsen, CEO, on the Group's performance in Q1 2010:
We had a very good Q1 with an EBIT margin of 9.8%. This is a marked improvement on the 3.2% achieved in Q1 2009, and we are now really seeing the full effects of our '10 in 10' initiatives and the cost reducing measures taken in the business area Europe. Moreover, a strong revenue following seasonal fluctuations, an improved product and price mix and positive developments in exchange rates also had a positive impact on operating profit.

On the outlook for 2010:
During the remaining part of 2010, we will aim to achieve further efficiency improvements and cost reductions, and we will maintain our forecast for 2010 of an EBIT margin of approximately 10% based on continued earnings growth in Europe and North America in the course of the year.

The first months of 2010 saw a sharp increase in the prices of paper and energy, which may, all things being equal, affect our production costs and hence cause our EBIT margin to fall by about 1-2 percentage points. Thus, achieving an EBIT margin of approximately 10% will be no less challenging, but we will consider it to be realistic, as we seek to offset the effect of the increasing paper and energy prices through the '10 in 10' measures.

Highlights Q1-10
Hartmann performed well in Q1 2010: operating profit before special items grew to DKK 37 million (2009: DKK 12 million), corresponding to an EBIT margin of 9.8% (2009: 3.2%).

The improvement in operating profit was primarily driven by strong revenues following seasonal fluctuations. Moreover, the '10 in 10' initiatives implemented and cost-reducing initiatives in the business area Europe now take full effect. The development was also driven by an improved product and price mix as well as positive developments in exchange rates relative to the year-earlier period.

Total revenue for Q1 2010 was DKK 381 million (2009: DKK 365 million). In Europe, the improvement was mainly attributable to a strong revenue following seasonal fluctuations, an improved product and price mix and favourable exchange rates, whereas in North America, it was mainly attributable to volume growth and favourable exchange rates relative to the year-earlier period.

The business area Europe saw an improvement: operating profit before special items nearly doubled to DKK 49 million (2009: DKK 26 million), while revenue remained largely unchanged at DKK 306 million (2009: DKK 301 million).

The business area North America reported its first quarterly profit. Revenue was DKK 53 million (2009: DKK 40 million), and operating profit before special items was DKK 2 million (2009: a loss of DKK 1 million).

Hartmann maintains its forecast of an unchanged revenue level of approximately DKK 1,400 million for 2010 (2009 actual: DKK 1,380 million). The EBIT margin is expected to continue to increase to a level of 10% due to continued earnings growth in Europe and North America (2009 actual: 5.7% before special items).

In Hartmann's Annual Report 2009, the Group's total energy and raw materials costs were assumed to be lower in 2010 than in 2009. The first months of 2010, however, saw sharp increases in the prices of paper and energy. All things being equal, these price increases may affect production costs in the course of 2010 and hence cause the EBIT margin to fall by about 1-2 percentage points. Thus, achieving an EBIT margin of approximately 10% will be no less challenging, but is still considered to be realistic, since the company seeks to offset the effect of the increasing paper and energy prices through the '10 in 10' measures. The expectations of '10 in 10' will be reviewed regularly in the light of developments in paper and energy prices.

Peter Arndrup Poulsen has announced his decision to resign from the position as CEO of Brødrene Hartmann A/S to take up the position as CEO of Tvilum-Scanbirk in Fårvang, north of Silkeborg, Denmark.

Peter Arndrup Poulsen will join Tvilum-Scanbirk on 1 December 2010 and will continue with Brødrene Hartmann in his present function until a replacement has been found and has joined the company. He will, however, leave on 30 November 2010 at the latest.

"My job with Brødrene Hartmann is one of the best jobs in Denmark, where I enjoy working with our Board and with many good and highly competent colleagues. The reason why I have nonetheless chosen to change jobs is that I received an attractive offer from another exciting company, which is based in Jutland where my wife and three children live. I have worked with Hartmann for four years, being based in Gentofte, but I now feel that the time has come for me to move back to my family," said Peter Arndrup Poulsen.

"The Board of Directors understands and respects Peter's reasons for choosing a job closer to his family and his home in Jutland, but we naturally regret his decision to leave Hartmann. Peter has played an important role in the implementation of Hartmann's highly successful turnaround, which was completed about a year ago. We are now well underway in the process of achieving our goal of an EBIT margin of 10% in 2010. Hartmann is enjoying good momentum and has created a solid platform for further growth. The Board of Directors would like to thank Peter for his invaluable efforts during his four years with Brødrene Hartmann A/S and wish him the best of luck in his new job," said Walther Vishof Paulsen, acting Chairman of the Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors will initiate the process of recruiting a new CEO in collaboration with Heidrick & Struggles, Executive Search.

Clearwater Paper Corporation announced that its board of directors has approved plans to build a Through-Air-Dried (TAD) paper machine and seven converting lines capable of producing ultra grades of private label tissue products. Final site selection for the South-eastern United States facility is underway.

"After a thorough analysis of the anticipated costs and returns from a new paper machine, the company is moving forward with construction of a 200-inch (5.1 m) TAD tissue machine, together with a total of seven converting lines," said Gordon Jones, Chairman, President and CEO. "Our estimates, which include strong incentive packages offered by competing states, put the projected returns for this project at approximately twice our cost of capital, which we expect to result in long-term value for the company."

As part of its stated growth strategy, Clearwater Paper is pursuing investment in its consumer products tissue business, specifically to expand the company's geographic reach to best serve existing and new customers on the East Coast. The total cost for the new facility is expected to be approximately $260-280 million, which includes the two new converting lines previously announced in February 2010.

The total cost figure includes the paper machine, seven converting lines, buildings to house the paper machine and converting lines and land. The company expects to fund the project primarily with existing cash on the balance sheet and future cash flow from operations. It is expected that capital will be deployed over the next five years, with approximately 80% to be split evenly between 2011 and 2012.

"The new facility is expected to employ up to 250 full-time employees and will increase our ultra quality tissue offering to include TAD bathroom tissue," said Bob DeVleming, Vice President, Consumer Products Division. "By adding additional TAD technology, we can drive growth in this segment while effectively competing with ultra quality branded products in the tissue and towel segments of the market. We believe that strengthening our product offering will provide us a significant advantage in the marketplace."

The company intends to break ground during the third quarter of this year. Build-out and start-up for the converting lines will come in phases, with the first two lines expected to begin production during the second half of 2011. The paper machine is expected to take two years to build from completion of engineering, and we anticipate beginning production on the machine in the second half of 2012. At full production capacity the facility will produce approximately 10 million cases or 70,000 tons of bathroom tissue and household towels annually.

Clearwater Paper manufactures quality consumer tissue, bleached paperboard and wood products at six facilities across the country. The company is a premier supplier of private label tissue to major retail grocery chains, and also produces bleached paperboard used by quality-conscious printers and packaging converters. Clearwater Paper's 2400 employees build shareholder value by developing strong customer partnerships through quality and service.

Spring Investor Conference: Clearwater Paper has also announced that Gordon Jones and Linda Massman, Vice President and CFO, were to present at the Stephens Inc 2010 Spring Investor Conference in New York on 25 May 2010. A live audio webcast of the presentation and slide materials to be used in connection with the presentation will be accessible via Clearwater Paper's Investor Relations section of the company's website at http://ir.clearwaterpaper.com/events.cfm. An audio replay of the webcast will be available at the site for 90 days.
