Paper producer Van Houtum is introducing the most environmentally friendly toilet paper in the world at the ISSA Interclean in the RAI Amsterdam. Satino Black is the only truly CO2-neutral toilet paper made with 100% recycled paper and an environmentally friendly production process, and yet it is just as soft and white as normal toilet paper.

4553659515_a817287ef9_m"Many users do not know that the largest part of toilet paper is still made of trees which are chopped down for that specific reason. That is totally unnecessary. That’s why we manufacture Satino Black from 100% recycled paper" says Henk van Houtum, director of Van Houtum. "In addition, we have developed a new production process during the last 2 1/2 years to replace all the harmful chemicals with natural, biologically degradable raw materials and additives."

Environmental objectives

"Black is the new green," says Nick op den Buijsch, Concept Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at Van Houtum. "Consumers, companies and governments worldwide are demanding ever more stringent product requirements while at the same time they want to make a contribution to the improvement of the environment". Satino Black has been developed to get a step closer to the set environmental objectives with one simple act. This makes it possible for everyone to make a contribution to breaking through the unnecessary exhaustion of the natural resources on our planet. Green is cool with Black."

The water and energy consumption for the production of Satino Black are already the lowest in the world in the market segment. CO2 neutrality is guaranteed as a result of the utilization of 100% green energy. Cradle to Cradle guarantees that chemicals for the production of Satino Black are converted to natural and biologically degradable auxiliary agents. It is harmless for humans as well as the environment.

Van Houtum has been an independent producer of hygiene paper for 75 years and is a front runner in the area of Socially Responsible Entrepreneurship. Satino Black is entirely CO2-neutral Cradle to Cradle certified toilet paper and paper towel made of 100% recycled paper.

CANADIAN FOREST INDUSTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS SIGN WORLD’S LARGEST CONSERVATION AGREEMENT APPLYING TO AREA TWICE THE SIZE OF GERMANY

Today 21 member companies of the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC), and nine leading environmental organizations, unveiled an unprecedented agreement – the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement – that applies to 72 million hectares of public forests licensed to FPAC members. The Agreement, when fully implemented, will conserve significant areas of Canada’s vast Boreal Forest, protect threatened woodland caribou and provide a competitive market edge for participating companies.

2017 06 26 225914Under the Agreement FPAC members, who manage two-thirds of all certified forest land in Canada, commit to the highest environmental standards of forest management within an area twice the size of Germany. Conservation groups commit to global recognition and support for FPAC member efforts.   The Agreement calls for the suspension of new logging on nearly 29 million hectares of Boreal Forest to develop conservation plans for endangered caribou, while maintaining essential fiber supplies for uninterrupted mill operations.  “Do Not Buy” campaigns by Canopy, ForestEthics and Greenpeace will be suspended while the Agreement is being implemented.

“The importance of this Agreement cannot be overstated,” said Avrim Lazar, President and CEO of FPAC. “FPAC member companies and their ENGO counterparts have turned the old paradigm on its head. Together we have identified a more intelligent, productive way to manage economic and environmental challenges in the Boreal that will reassure global buyers of our products’ sustainability.  It’s gratifying to see nearly a decade of industry transformation and hard work greening our operations, is culminating in a process that will set a forestry standard that will be the envy of the world.”

Environmental groups, including the three organizations that have been mobilizing large customers towards green products, say the coming together of two traditional adversaries reflects a new commitment to a common goal.

“This is our best chance to save woodland caribou, permanently protect vast areas of the Boreal Forest and put in place sustainable forestry practices,” said Richard Brooks, spokesperson for participating environmental organizations and Forest Campaign Coordinator of Greenpeace Canada.  “Concerns from the public and the marketplace about wilderness conservation and species loss have been critical drivers in arriving at this agreement. We have a lot of work to do together to make this agreement successful and we are committed to make it happen.

Also vital to the agreement have been the efforts of the Pew Environment Group and Ivey Foundation, which worked to support the two sides coming together and to facilitate the negotiations.

“For years we have helped bring opposing parties together to conserve this global treasure, Canada’s boreal forest,” said Steve Kallick, director of the Pew Environment Group’s International Boreal Conservation Campaign. “We’re thrilled that this effort has led to the largest commercial forest conservation plan in history, which could not have happened without both sides looking beyond their differences. As important as today’s announcement is, our ultimate success will be measured by how we tackle the work ahead to put this plan into practice.”

The Agreement identifies explicit commitments for both sides and sets out a plan, which includes:

  • The development and implementation of world-leading forest management and harvesting practices;
  • The completion of joint proposals for networks of protected areas and the recovery of species at risk including woodland caribou;
  • A full life cycle approach to forest carbon management; and
  • Support for the economic future of forest communities and for the recognition of conservation achievements in the global marketplace.

Signatory environmental organizations, FPAC, and the Association’s companies have begun meetings with provincial governments, First Nations and local communities across the country to seek their leadership and full participation in advancing the goals of the Agreement.  Participants recognize that governments, including First Nation governments, are decision makers within their jurisdictions. The Agreement recognizes that aboriginal peoples have constitutionally protected aboriginal and treaty rights that must be respected and engaged in order for the Agreement to fulfill its objectives.

The progress made to reach the objectives laid out in the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement will be regularly measured and reported on by a jointly agreed-upon independent auditor.

Forestry Companies Participating in the Agreement:

AbitibiBowater, Alberta Pacific Forest Industries, AV Group, Canfor, Cariboo Pulp & Paper Company, Cascades Inc., DMI, F.F. Soucy, Inc., Howe Sound Pulp and Paper, Kruger Inc., LP Canada, Mercer International, Mill & Timber Products Ltd, NewPage Port Hawkesbury Ltd, Papier Masson Ltée, SFK Pulp, Tembec Inc., Tolko Industries, West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd, Weyerhauser Compnay Limited−all represented by the Forest Products Association of Canada.

Environmental Organizations Participating in the Agreement:
Canadian Boreal Initiative, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, Canopy (formerly Markets Initiative), the David Suzuki Foundation, ForestEthics, Greenpeace, Ivey Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, and the Pew Environment Group’s International Boreal Conservation Campaign. The Hewlett Foundation’s support for boreal forest conservation has been critical to the collective efforts of these groups.

Lenzing's subsidiary PT. South Pacific Viscose (SPV) officially started up its fourth production line at the beginning of April. A total of about USD 150 mill. made the production line the Group's biggest individual investment project in recent years. Its annual nominal production capacity of 60,000 tons of viscose fibers for textile and nonwovens applications raises SPV's total annual capacity to 220,000 tons and makes it Asia's biggest viscose fiber production site and the world's second-biggest producer, after the parent plant at Lenzing with 255,000 tons per year.

Peter Untersperger, chairman of the Lenzing management board, at the inauguration in Purwakarta: “Indonesia and the whole of Asia are Lenzing's single most important sales market. The extension of PT. South Pacific Viscose is another milestone for the Lenzing Group. It again marks our commitment to our customers in this part of the world. And it is, moreover, an essential part of our corporate strategy. With the completion of all current investment projects in 2012, about half of the Group's fiber production capacity of then 378,000 tons will be located in Asia. It is our goal to reach the million-ton production mark by successive expansion steps and more than half of our total cellulose fiber production will then be generated in Asia.“

Fritz Weninger, the member of the Lenzing management board responsible for fibers, at the ceremony emphasized: “For the next years we expect above-average demand for viscose fibers produced by SPV. We offer our customers innovative applications, top quality, delivery dependability and the best technical support possible: Processors who use Lenzing fibers realize corresponding added market value“.

The new jumbo line took two years to complete and required the extension of existing industrial infrastructure, including a state-of-the-art 21 megawatt power station with multi-fuel fluidized boiler and attached steam turbine, a sulfuric acid plant with a daily capacity of 300 tons, a CS2 recovery plant, as well as process and waste water facilities. SPV consequently conforms to the latest environmental standards.

All in all, a total of about USD 500 mill. were invested in SPV. A debottlenecking program will be started along with the regular operation of line four in order to raise total production capacity by another 18,000 tons to 238,000 tons per year.

Lenzing has been involved in SPV since 1983 and has been holding the industrial management since the start of production. The company raised its initial minority interest in successive steps to currently 90.56 percent. The remainder is being held by Indonesian shareholders

Production capacity has been increased more than tenfold in successive stages from initially 20,000 tons per year. SPV is an important supplier to the Indonesian textile industry, the one of biggest industrial segment of Indonesia. The site’s staff of 1,656 makes the company one of the biggest employers in the region and a major contributor to its rise over the past 30 years. SPV, moreover, finances numerous community projects such as schools and child and health care centers in Purwakarta

The world’s first pilot machine for making it possible to work with nanocellulose on a large scale is currently under construction in Stockholm. With this major venture, Innventia, a research company, is taking a decisive step towards the industrialisation of its energy efficient production process for the new super material.

Nanocellulose is a material that is extracted from wood fibres. It has exceptional strength properties, being more or less as strong as Kevlar, a light weight material. However, in contrast to Kevlar and other materials based on fossil fuels, nanocellulose is completely renewable.

3815r“For a long time, there’s been a great deal of interest from industry in utilising nanocellulose as a strengthening component in other materials, such as paper, composites and plastics,” relates Mikael Ankerfors, a Research Manager at Innventia. “We can also create new, more effective, environmentally compatible and renewable barrier films for packages used for foodstuffs.”

Nanocellulose, a super material, is going to have many areas of use in the future. For example, it can be used to make membranes and other reserve parts for the human body.  It can also be used as a provider of viscosity in foodstuffs; in other words, it is able to replace carbohydrates and other additives in foodstuffs, which are known as low calorie products.

“Nanocellulose will be something revolutionary for the foodstuff industry too,” continues Mikael.

For the first time, nanocellulose will be able to be produced on a large scale, with the process being economically efficient. Previously, the homogenising stage in the process was much too demanding, when it comes to energy. Due to the process developments carried out by Innventia, the energy consumption has been reduced by a total of 98%.

Mikael explains, “This is equivalent to a saving of 29,000 kWh per tonne. To give a comparison, consider that the heating of a normal sized house takes approximately 18,000 kWh per year. For a full-sized mill that furnishes a paper mill with nanocellulose, this means a saving in energy that would be equivalent to 8,000 houses a year.”

Innventia is making a major investment in this technology by constructing the first pilot plant in the world for producing on a larger scale.

“This is a natural step in the investment we’re making in nanocellulose. In order to develop applications, such as paper and composite materials, the raw material produced in a lab is not sufficient. As the only company in the world, we’re extremely proud to be able to offer industry real opportunities to participate in this field, which is so important for the future,” concludes Mikael.

At this year's IPEX trade show in Birmingham, United Kingdom, from May 18 to 25, 2010, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) will be showcasing the latest developments in its product and solution portfolio. The leading international solution provider for sheetfed offset printing is focusing its trade show presence on its extensive portfolio of state-of-the-art technologies and services under the slogans HEI Performance and HEI Value.

"We are confident that the IPEX trade show will further reinforce the noticeable upwards trend in the industry," said Bernhard Schreier, Heidelberg Chief Executive Officer. "The show could mark a positive turning point for the industry in 2010."

Providing customers with the best support for different market requirements

As part of its trade show presence, Heidelberg will draw on the economic developments of the recent past and explore the structural changes in the industry in order to show customers specific alternative methods to boost their competitiveness. "The fact is that the global annual print volume totaling nearly EUR 400 billion has seen stable development over the past ten years with some slight fluctuations. However, the picture has differed from region to region," explained Bernhard Schreier. "In the industrial nations, advertising printing will not return to pre-crisis levels, while packaging printing, on the other hand, will grow slightly. In the emerging countries, however, strong growth is evident in both advertising and packaging printing."

Taking this market development into consideration, Heidelberg will be showcasing solutions at IPEX that demonstrate to companies in the developed economies how to adjust to the changes in the industry by improving productivity and optimizing processes overall, e.g. through high-productivity machines or process integration using software, in order to secure market success. For prepress, press, and postpress companies in emerging countries, on the other hand, the focus is on productive standard equipment to satisfy the growing demand for print products on their home markets.

"We have systematically geared our range of products and solutions to the requirements of our customers in the advertising printing and packaging printing segments and ensured that they represent the state-of-the-art. We therefore confidently believe that both we and our customers are well placed for the recovery," said Schreier.

New products help to master the challenges of the future

With numerous prepress, press, and postpress innovations, including integration of all process steps, Heidelberg can offer users the leading solution portfolio in the industry, and is committed to doing so in the future, too. IPEX 2010 will mark the world premiere of the Speedmaster CX 102, a new press for industrial offset printing capable of reaching production speeds of 16,500 sheets per hour. As well as high productivity, the Speedmaster CX 102 is impressively versatile and is aimed at both commercial and packaging printers.

The new press is positioned between the Speedmaster SM 102 / CD 102 and the Speedmaster XL 105. This press puts the finishing touch to the Heidelberg 70 x 100 cm (27.56 x 39.37") format and offers the perfect solution for every press speed and level of productivity.

A further IPEX innovation from Heidelberg is Prinect S - a workflow solution for small and medium-sized print shops that provides a fast and reliable gateway to lean print production. Users benefit from all the basic print shop workflow functions required to combine prepress and pressroom management in a single system.

Trade show presence focuses on current market trends

At the trade show, the company will run practical demonstrations to highlight how media service providers, print shops, and postpress specialists can act on current market trends such as Lean Manufacturing, Ecological Printing or Web-to-Print and successfully adapt their portfolios accordingly. Heidelberg will demonstrate at IPEX how to optimize business and production processes across the entire value added chain of sheetfed offset printing, while also minimizing their environmental impact.

The numerous practical demonstrations will enable visitors to find out how they can achieve economic success with short-run high-end print applications, stand out from the crowd with creative print applications, and make the Internet an integral part of their business strategy. Heidelberg is proving that environmentally friendly production has long ceased to be just an empty buzzword, not only with special training measures at its own production sites, but also by making its whole trade show presence in Birmingham climate-neutral. This measure covers the whole carbon footprint, including the assembly and dismantling phases, the trade show personnel's trip to the site, and the paper used in the practical demonstrations.

Boosting performance with Heidelberg's service portfolio

In order to be successful nowadays, print shops need to do more than just use state-of-the-art technology. Services from suppliers are playing an ever greater role in ensuring that equipment is available round the clock and in helping users unlock the full potential of a machine or integrated solution.

To give customers faster access to these benefits as and when they require them, Heidelberg has combined its entire service portfolio in a dedicated division. The portfolio covers a print shop's entire value added chain and the full life cycle of machinery - from the initial investment to resale.

This includes comprehensive analysis and consulting services, e.g. for process enhancement and system integration, along with training measures for employees and concrete support for certification to ISO or the latest environmental standards. In Hall 8 at IPEX, visitors can obtain practical information about the full range of remote diagnosis and inspection functions, supply of Original Heidelberg spare parts, the range of Saphira consumables, and the service agreements offered as part of Heidelberg Systemservice.

IPEX reinforces upwards trend in the industry

The first upward trends are clearly apparent in various regions. "Companies that invest now in new technologies, new areas of business or processes within their business, will be well placed for the future," says Bernhard Schreier. "Customers are accustomed to us boosting their competitiveness through the latest technologies and a comprehensive service portfolio," he states, adding: "And at this year's IPEX, they won't be disappointed."
