The FSC Director General has delivered a positive approval decision for the "Swedish FSC SLIMF Standard for Forest Certification”. The approval of the Swedish SLIMF (Small and Low Intensity Managed Forest) standard will have a major impact on Swedish forest management as most forest owners in the country are smallholders.

On 24th March 2010, FSC Sweden submitted the SLIMF version of the national standard.  Since then an assessment has been made by FSC PSU and submitted to the FSC Director General (DG), who is in charge of national standards decisions until the FSC Policy and Standards Committee is fully implemented.  The Director General has approved the Swedish SLIMF Standard on 5th May 2010.

The Swedish SLIMF standard is a component of the national Swedish FSC standard that sets specific requirements for small and low intensity managed forests. On 24 February 2010 the "Swedish FSC Standard for Forest Certification" was approved. The Swedish national standard together with the SLIMF requirements will come into effect for all forest management certification in Sweden from 1st June 2010.

A new Forest Products Industry Technology Roadmap released today by the Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance invites the global research community to engage in collaborative, pre-competitive research, development, and demonstration programs that will provide the foundation for deployment of new breakthrough technologies for the forest products industry.

The 2010 Roadmap outlines technology objectives and research needs in six areas of critical importance to the industry:

* reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions,
* reducing fresh water consumption,
* increasing the supply of woody biomass for a variety of purposes,
* creating value from woody biomass in new ways,
* enabling new products and product features,
* and increasing recovery and recycling of waste products.

In addition, the Roadmap discusses how the Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance will advance essential technology development programs that will benefit the industry.

“I look forward to the active role Agenda 2020 will have in achieving these critically needed results,” said Ron Brown, the Alliance’s Executive Director.  “We will implement the Roadmap by working with the industry to highlight priority needs and drive research progress, with government agencies to further national and societal goals such as energy security and job creation, and with academia to involve the best possible talent.  Together, we will execute research programs that address industry’s technology opportunities while contributing pathways to critical national objectives.”

The Technology Alliance promotes development of new technologies for the forest products industry as a special project of the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA).

AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman added, “The forest products industry is committed to improving the environment that makes our future success possible.  We have made great strides in our sustainability efforts so far, and we are committed to doing more. The 2010 Roadmap will help us achieve the breakthrough technologies needed to continue our progress while strengthening our leadership in the use of renewable energy and efficient manufacturing processes that are better for the environment and better for business.”

The 2010 Roadmap was developed by the Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance, in partnership with The Institute of Paper Science and Technology at Georgia Tech, and with financial support from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Industrial Technologies Program.

An electronic copy of the 2010 Roadmap is available at www.agenda2020.org.

UPM's Otepää Plywood Mill celebrates its 10th anniversary on Wednesday, May 12, 2010. Otepää is the only plywood mill in Estonia and the second largest plywood maker in the Baltic Countries.

Otepää manufactures birch plywood from local raw material. In addition to standard plywood, the mill further processes top quality WISA plywood for use in transport and furniture industries and construction, among others.

90% of the mills production goes to exports, primarily to Europe. Otepää's location in the Baltic Rim allows even one-day deliveries to be made to its main markets in northern parts of Central Europe. The mill has an important role in UPM's plywood business both product-wise and logistically.

"After the mill extension in 2008 and the big investment in further processing completed last year, the annual production capacity is 50,000 cubic meters of plywood, of which more than half is further processed by coating, cutting or machining," says Kaido Kukk, Director at UPM Plywood.

Otepää plywood mill is one of the biggest employers in the Valgamaa region. The mill employs regularly 170 persons and several hundreds more indirectly in trade and services as well as in various projects and construction and maintenance tasks.

Estonian Forestex AS established the mill together with Sylvester AS and UPM on May 12, 2000, when UPM's share of the mill was one third. UPM became the sole owner of the mill in 2003.

Taking place in Birmingham, UK from May 18th- 25th, recognized Original Equipment Manufacturers will demonstrate the high quality print results achieved together with Mondi’s premium papers.

Vienna, 11th May, 2010 Mondi will be present at this year’s IPEX fair as a paper sponsor for some of the printing industry’s most recommended OEMs. This year, Mondi has sponsored Xeikon, Konica Minolta, Xerox, and Canon with supplies of Color Copy — the first colour laser paper in the world to be specifically designed for colour laser systems. In addition to Color Copy, Xeikon will also receive IQ premium in 80 gsm — an ideal paper for text and graphics due to its high whiteness.  Mondi’s new HP Indigo certified products will also be available for viewing in the paper sample swatch book at the HP stand.

“IPEX is a major international event and as a global manufacturer of Uncoated Fine Paper, Mondi is pleased to participate alongside Xeikon, Konica Minolta, Xerox, Canon, and HP,” says Johannes Klumpp Marketing and Sales Director of Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper. “With this year’s focus on digital printing technologies, it is important to demonstrate how Mondi’s paper technologies have developed in conjunction with OEMs to produce exceptional print results.”color copy image

Both part of Mondi’s digital print portfolio, IQ premium and Color Copy are available in a wide range of grammages and formats. According to the Graphic Technology Research Association FOGRA, Color Copy has once again set the benchmark as Europe’s leading paper for overall print quality. More recently, it was qualified for Xeikon digital duplex presses — a confirmation of manufacturer confidence in Color Copy’s excellent runnability and machine protection.

The last IPEX, which occurred 4 years ago, attracted visitors from over 159 countries, 40% of which came from outside of the UK.  More information about Mondi’s digital product portfolio and its environmental accreditations can be found at: www.mondigroup.com/digitalprinting.
