Valmet Tissue Technology Award ceremonies at the Tissue World Conference in Barcelona

The focus area for the award this year was environmental efficiency. Mr. Salam is awarded for his work on modified hardwood pulp for tissue production. The objective of Mr. Salam's work has been to develop a method to provide unique tissue characteristics using only natural materials. By modifying hardwood pulp, it can be cross-linked with a biodegradable product to greatly improve absorbency properties. The modified fibers are elastic, very soft, highly porous and durable, and also have microbial properties.

"We are constantly searching for new innovations to make the tissue process more sustainable and environmentally efficient. Mr. Salam's innovation is well in line with our strategy and shows how biomaterials can be utilized to add new and improved properties to tissue products. This is an excellent example of how scientists and the academic world can contribute to the important work of developing sustainable solutions for the future of tissue-making," says Anders Björn, Vice President, Tissue Mills business unit, Valmet.

"I greatly appreciate the award committee's selection of my research for Valmet Tissue Technology Award of 2015. This is my first international award which has truly inspired me to develop new products and ideas for tissue and paper towel applications. I believe the research developments related to modifying hardwood pulp can significantly contribute to the personal health care sector as well as the global economy," says Abdus Salam, the winner of the Valmet Tissue Technology Award.

Valmet will deliver a boiler plant that utilizes biomass to Nokianvirran Energia in Finland. Valmet announced the signing of a letter of intent for the delivery on November 25, 2014. Valmet's delivery will include a HYBEX boiler with a steam power of 68 megawatts (MW) that employs the fluidized bed technology, flue gas purification equipment, and the plant's electrification and automation system.

The boiler plant will be delivered for a new steam heat station to be built in Nokia. The total value of Nokianvirran Energia's investment is approximately EUR 45 million, of which the value of Valmet's delivery is slightly more than a half. The order is included in Valmet's first quarter 2015 orders received.

2015 03 17 060931

The boiler plant will be constructed inside an existing boiler building, in the middle of the photo, from where an old coal-fired boiler, delivered by Tampella in 1963, will be demolished.

The new boiler plant will utilize local fuels

The new heating station will produce process steam for the SCA Hygiene Products paper mill and the Nokian Renkaat factory, as well as district heat for Leppäkosken Lämpö's district heat customers. The fossil natural gas previously used for energy production will be replaced with more affordable biofuels, such as timber chips and whole tree chips. In addition, the boiler can utilize milled peat and sludge from the paper mill.

Leppäkosken Lämpö distributes the district heat produced by the power plant to its customers through its network. "This investment will especially improve the price competitiveness of district heat compared with other heating methods," says Juha Koskinen, the managing director of Leppäkosken Lämpö.

For SCA, which manufactures tissue, the investment will decrease the company's dependence on fossil natural gas. In addition the de-inking sludge derived from the tissue mill can also be used for energy production at the new power plant.

For Nokian Renkaat, the power plant will bring cost benefits, and additionally reduces the greenhouse gas emissions of the production process.

Technical information about Valmet's delivery

Nokianvirran Energia Oy's current plant consists of two gas-fired boilers with a steam power of 57 and 110 MW. The new 68 MW plant to be constructed will be integrated with the existing power plant. As gas is replaced by biofuels, carbon dioxide emissions in the area will decrease by 60,000-80,000 tons per year.

Valmet has delivered several fluidized bed boilers of nearly the same capacity to district heating plants and industrial facilities. "Stricter emission standards and the need for using affordable bio and recycled fuels that are more demanding in terms of corrosion, present new challenges for the boiler design. The design work for Nokianvirran Energia's new boiler has mostly been completed, and the manufacturing has been started at Valmet's Lapua workshop. According to the project schedule, steam production will begin in the spring of 2016," says Jari Niemelä, Sales Director, EMEA, Valmet.

Information about Nokianvirran Energia Oy

Nokianvirran Energia Oy is a joint venture of Oy SCA Hygiene Products Ab, Nokian Renkaat Oy and Leppäkosken Sähkö Oy which is constructing a steam heat station in Nokia to be integrated with the exiting power plant. Once completed, the plant will produce process steam and district heat to its owners and improve the competitiveness of the shareholders' business operations, ensuring more stable energy prices in the long term.

signature valmetValmet will deliver equipment and services for a rebuild of the soft wood pulp line at Holmen's Iggesund mill in Sweden. The rebuild will improve production stability, cut variable costs and increase pulp production capacity by 15 percent equally to 50,000 tonnes. The works will be implemented in two stages during 2015 and 2016.

The order is included in Valmet's first quarter 2015 orders received. The value of the order will not be disclosed.

"We have a good experience since we have had Valmet presses in our mill for many years. This rebuild will eliminate bottle necks in the process and increase pulp capacity. We will also cut variable costs which will strengthen our competitiveness", says Olov Winblad von Walter, Mill Director, Iggesund.

"This rebuild is the first step towards a press based bleach plant. The high outlet consistency makes the process easier to control and the volume of effluent will be less than for washers with lower discharge consistencies. Also water and chemical consumption will be minimized. We are looking forward to a good co-operation in this project", says Mikael Gustafsson, Sales Manager, Valmet.

Technical information about Valmet's delivery

The scope of the Valmet delivery includes main machinery, basic engineering and erection. In the first stage, two pressure diffusers will be rebuilt, one in the cooking plant and one in the brown stock washing, where also a new TwinRoll press, will be installed. In the second stage, the oxygen delignification stage will be extended into a two-stage OxyTrac system, which will make it possible to still reach lower kappa numbers in case of a further production increase. In the bleach plant two new TwinRoll presses will be installed.

Details about Valmet's technology delivery to Metsä Fibre Äänekoski project

If materialized, the approximately EUR 1.1 billion bioproduct mill planned by Metsä Fibre would be the largest ever investment in the forest industry in Finland. The mill would have an annual pulp production capacity of 1.3 million tonnes.

Valmet's delivery would include engineering, procurement, supply and construction management of a recovery boiler, a pulp drying line, a lime kiln and a gasification plant.

The planned recovery boiler has a capacity of 7,200 TDS/d (tonnes dry solids a day). The planned pulp drying line will have a trimmed width of 8.25 meters and a capacity of 2,700 Adt/d (air dry tonnes a day). The planned lime kiln has a capacity of 1,200 t/d and will be operated by renewable fuel provided by 87 MW product gas capacity biomass gasification plant. The gasification plant dries bark and gasifies it to product gas.
